THE GLOVES COME OFF: TYER RESPONDS TO SHOOTINGS, BLASTS BIANCHI FOR LACK OF COMPASSION, LEADERSHIP … CALLS MAYOR’s RESPONSE ‘RECKLESS AND IRRESPONSIBLE’

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 2015) — Linda Tyer took the hint. Linda Tyer came out smoking. Linda Tyer just announced she won’t play the “demure little girl” role in which Dan Bianchi‘s camp has cast her.

Tyer’s Statement: Hitting the Right Tone

After THE PLANET questioned why she and other candidates had not responded to the July 4 shootings, Tyer issued the following statement:

What’s on my mind this morning? The July 4th shootings. My sincere condolences to the families who are heartbroken by these tragic events. Their loss is profound. This kind of senseless violence is felt throughout every neighborhood in our city.

Sadly, Mayor Bianchi’s reaction and response to each episode of violence in our city is reckless and irresponsible. From dismissing the brutal death of a young man as “unpleasant” and now encouraging untrained citizens to confront dangerous criminals he has not demonstrated compassion or leadership in this crisis. Crime watches are helpful but not a solution.

I join with the people of Pittsfield in expressing outrage over the constant threats that exists in our community. It is upsetting the lives of many responsible and respectable people who live and work here. Despite very difficult circumstances, our police officers do their very best to keep us safe. But we continue to suffer with the errors of this and prior administrations that allowed a condition of chronic under-staffing in our police department. They have failed us. No other issue has greater meaning to the people of Pittsfield.

We deserve to feel safe in our homes and in our neighborhoods. Our business investments demand superior public safety. Our friends must have confidence that they are safe and secure while visiting our vibrant city. Our school community will thrive only in a safe harbor.

As your next mayor I promise to collaborate with our law enforcement professionals to implement new strategies for how we fight crime in Pittsfield including increasing the number of police officers patrolling our streets. And, I will begin a process of continuous engagement with all of the groups working in our community to combat the underlying issues that lead to crime and violence.

Will you stand with me?

——– 000 ——–

These words smoked The Bianchi out of the woodpile. And yeah, it looks even worse in a suit and tie.

Instead of addressing the actual crisis brought about by the shootings, Bianchi’s team played politics:

“Unfortunately my opponent is using a very tragic situation to mislead the public.  Her insinuation that crime is not a top priority in my administration is ridiculous.  No candidate for public office should use the unfortunate circumstances of a fatal shooting to mislead the public and distort the collaborative efforts underway between the District Attorney’s Office, the Pittsfield Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department and community partners and organizations. Not only is my opponent misleading the public but she is insulting the work of our law enforcement partners in this community.”

“My opponent claims that her administration will do two specific things to combat crime.   (1) add additional police officers, and (2) work in a collaborative way with law enforcement professionals and all of the groups working to combat the underlying issues that lead to crime and violence.  The Bianchi Administration has done both and these efforts are only spokes in the wheel of ending violence in our community.   Our collaborative efforts across the community have made a deep and substantial impact. The partnerships I have formed with through my public safety task force have been essential for our community.”

“In closing, this issue should not be a political one.  The victims, and their families and friends deserve better.  Pittsfield citizens deserve better.  I look forward to continuing to work closely with the law enforcement officials throughout Berkshire County.  The work they are doing is far too important to be derailed by an irresponsible political attack and foolish innuendo.”

My opponentMy opponent” — why, she’s now so much in his head he can’t even say her name! Well get used to it, Hizzoner: Linda Tyer, Linda Tyer, Linda Tyer. She just kicked your ass.

” … and these efforts are only spokes in the wheel of ending violence in our community.” That isn’t a mixed metaphor. It’s certifiably non compos mentis. Unhinged, baby, the type of thing an imposter says when using words he does not believe.

‘Crime is the Number One Issue’

Proving she’s catching on fast, Tyer immediately returned fire, sending this statement to THE PLANET:

“Crime and safety is an issue that is deeply upsetting to Pittsfielders.  They deserve to know, and, in fact, are demanding to know, where all of the candidates for all offices stand on this matter.  When I am invited into peoples homes for coffees and am knocking on doors, crime is the number one issue that I hear about from everyone I meet.

Mayor Bianchi claims that he has made deep and substantial impacts to end violence.  I wish he would have given us specifics.  Because here’s what I know – for the past two years Mayor Bianchi has budgeted for only 65 patrol officers despite the recommendations of his own Police Advisory Committee and the Chief of Police who both wanted wanted a minimum increase to 68 officers patrolling our streets.”

“I hope you’ll find all of the information interesting for your readers.”
——– 000 ——–

THE PLANET‘s readers will find it interesting, for it reveals an essential difference between Tyer and Hizzoner. THE PLANET supplies a clue:

All the Mayor’s courtly Civic-cats can vent. Perfume to him, to us is excrement.

But hear me further — Linda, ’tis agreed. Writ not, for Bianchi scarce can right or read.

The gloves are off, as well they will. It’s July, after all, and it will get hotter still.

The people who live in Pittsfield are scared for their lives from all of the violent crime in their community. There are areas of Pittsfield that are unsafe, especially after hours. I would not feel safe in the following Pittsfield neighborhoods.
—–
PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT!
Stay off of:
North st.
Tyler st.
Lincoln st.
First st.
Second st.
Linden st.
Dewey ave
Cherry st.
Burbank st.
Kent ave
Madison ave
And Seymour st.
And you might survive.
—–
Linda Tyer is impressive. She is intelligent and she knows her stuff regarding public administration. The only drawback with Linda Tyer is that she is close to Jimmy Ruberto and his Good Old Boys’ club of insiders who have ran Pittsfield into the proverbial ditch. Jimmy Ruberto was a failed Mayor of Pittsfield. Linda Tyer is proving herself to be yet another Pittsfield political hack.
—–
Dan Bianchi is a do nothing. He works 2 jobs. There is a possible conflict of interest there. The Mayor, Dan Bianchi, went after Rosanne Frieri, while he gave William Monterosso a lucrative severance worth an excessive amount of taxpayer money. Rosanne Frieri did nothing wrong or illegal, while William Monterosso had serious allegations made against him. William Monterosso was represented by none other than the corrupt political hack/Attorney Andrea F. Nuciforo, Jr.
—–
About 70% of Pittsfield’s local residents are receiving welfare assistance or social services. Pittsfield is an unequal community. The vested interests are doing well, while the people are hungry and homeless.
—–
Pittsfield has high taxes and fees, increased spending by millions of dollar annually, and hundreds of millions of dollars in debts, including the huge OPEB unfunded liabilities. Pittsfield’s public finances are unsustainable. Mayor Dan BIanchi’s municipal budget is said to be increasing between 6% to 9% per year. No community could withstand 9% annual budget increases.

Please Jonathan, stop putting out unsubstantiated, undocumented, false statistics on public assistance. 70% of Pittsfield residents are not on public assistance, and 80% of North Adams residents are not on public assistance. Do we have a higher percentage of those on such programs in this region than many other places? Yes, but it’s not 70 or 80%.

The math doesn’t work. If that were true, that would mean only 20% of homeowners in Pittsfield or North Adams pay real estate taxes, and neither city could have a budget based on that.

I understand what you’re saying and many of your basic points are true, but greatly over-inflating statistics helps no one. The US Census Bureau says that the city of Springfield has the highest rate of any city in Massachusetts for public assistance rates, and it’s 22%. The state average is between 3 and 4%. I’m sure Pittsfield and North Adams fall somewhere close to Springfield, but not three times higher.

As Benjamin Disraeli once said, “there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.”

If Linda Tyer defeats Bianchi in the fall, she will have accomplished a political coup for recent elections in that an incumbent will have voted out of office. This may send a message to any elected official including herself .Same for any challenger.

EVERYONE TAKE A LOOK AT AT HER FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT WHEN SHE BASICALLY SAID NOTHING–IT WAS WALL TO WALL SOB-GOBs- does any one want to return to the ruberto era—he more than any mayor in the past was responsible for more job losses than any other mayor in the city history—we had some very bad mayors –Doyle– Hathaway DOBELLE— BUT HE CLEARLY IS THE WINNER OF THE BOOBY CONTEST–IS THERE ANY ONE OUT THERE WHO WANTS RUBERTO BACK? Bianchi suggests that stopping crime is a top priority of his administration? If he has made his best effort it is obviously a miserable failure as any blind man can see. I think Danny Lockdown has unbelievable gall to run for mayor after his joke performance the last several years. I have not met anyone in the last two years who thinks he has done a good job. Anyone! Seriously!

And who is this secretive fourth candidate for mayor? Is he just some pawn thrown in to help split the vote in the primary or does he have substance?

I am glad we are finally seeing the candidates actually coming to life in this campaign which is a very important campaign since the city has serious problems and we will be either stuck or blessed with the next mayor for 4 years so we need to make a wise choice.

Crime is obviously a big issue in this city, but I would put poverty in equal importance to the crime issue. With such high and growing poverty numbers in Pittsfield, this also needs to be brought out in the campaign. Jobs need to be a priority of our next mayor.

Craig,
John Kerry was exposed as a fraud by his fellow US Navy boat veterans.
I cannot wait to hear the result of your visit to the police chief. Until your nomination papers are submitted and verified, you are not a real mayoral candidate, so if I were chief, I would just give the copies of the press releases. If you continue to persist, I would not be surprised if you get charged with interfering with an investigation.
That Dale Carnegie course you keep saying you will make mandatory, please take it yourself first.
Also, if you ever do submit your signatures and are certified, why not consider a signed, motorized statement that if elected you will serve with no pay, medical insurance (unless you pay the full premium), pension benefits, or expense reimbursements (you can àlways deduct these against all your other income).
That would give you some real credibility.

In the postings above, there is a remarkable lack of facts. Maybe everybody knows the answers but let me ask for those of us who are uniformed:
1. How many police there are in Pittsfield, (65?)
2. How many officers did Bianchi promise when he was elected (69?)
3. How is the right number? (What do communities of Pittsfield’s size and location have?)

According to the Bulington, VT PD’s website, they have 100 sworn officers and 36 civilan employees.Their officers apparently perform parking enforcement which is not part of the Pittsfield PD. That leaves the BPD with about 96 sworn officers, I believe Pittsfield has 90 officers slotted. Not a great difference depending on administative and other assignments. Pittsfield obviously needs more street officers as at times there may be only 3-5 patrol cars active in the city. A new TO may be inorder.

Sometimes it is the little things…

Donald Trump is running for president. He has a significant following. There is something about a ‘train wreck’ that draws people to watch. It isn’t pretty, but you just can’t help yourself.

It is the same thing that draws you to Lebanon Valley Racetrack… everyone watches the race, hoping to see a wreck– until someone dies.

I could give you a list of reasons why I wont vote for Donald Trump, but embedded within my list is the fact that Mr. Trump is holding on to a lie, which is his flap of hair comb-over. He simply doesn’t live in the real world. Donald, you’ve lost your hair, it’s okay. Your accomplishments and money don’t qualify you to run for president. In a word, sir, you are a little ‘nutty.’

With regard to PIttsfield politics. There are many reasons why certain candidates will not get my vote. Substantive reasoning aside, I think Mayoral candidates should be able to spell.

No one has yet steered in the direction of why this shooting happened and why an increase in the police force won’t solve it. Currently Pittsfield is a welfare city with gangs living in houses close to where the shooting occurred. For Pittsfield to change would require well paying jobs to materialize and hard honest workers to move into the city. Unfortunately I do not see this happening anytime soon. All an increase in the police force will do is have more people responding to an unfortunate event.
