THE SUITS KEEP TELLING YOU: NEEDLESS $120MM SCHOOL ‘A GREAT THING FOR PITTSFIELD’

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY, AUG. 17, 2015) — Now that THE PLANET has proven the Pittsfield School Department eats up 70%+ of the city’s $146 million budget, it stands to reason how any attempt at preventing certain economic disaster for Podunk must begin with the PSD.

Of course, the problem will remain untouched for years to come — at least as long as it takes to run the municipality into bankruptcy — if Insiders from Pittsfield two political tribes keep a stranglehold on public office. It would take an enormous act of independence and integrity for a Suits-backed candidate to win office then begin to govern not for The Special Interests but for We The People.

The PSD slobs down $102 million. This includes its own budget plus the costs for maintenance, buses, and health insurance hid on the city side of the ledger lest Mary Joe and Jane Kapanski grasp the mammoth size of the academic heist being perpetuated upon then. The school department also lost for taxpayers more than $5 million through children exiting the district via school choice. Do the math: what’s $107 million as a percentage of $146 million?

Answer: 73%. As former School Building Need Committee member Chuck Vincelette points out, when you factor in $121 million in new borrowing for the new high school, passed solely to reward The Suits and Friends, you’re past 80%. Vincelette was the only member of the 20+ member SBNC questioning the wisdom of spending that much for a new school building not needed in light of the district’s plummeting enrollment. For his efforts, other members made his committee life unbearable. Vincelette did the honorable thing. He resigned. That’s what the city does to intelligent, honest, ethical citizens who dare get involved in government. It marginalizes them to discourage others who might be thinking of getting involved.

The Suits see government as their own private club. The only involvement they want from you is to keep your mouth shut and pay your ever-increasing taxes.

One Picture, Thousands of Words

Recently, The Pittsfield Gazette ran a telling photograph. It depicted school supt. Jake “JIV” McCandless, councilor-at-large Kathy Amuso, and petrified fossil Carmen Massimiano. They are members of the SBNC, that kangaroo court engineered by The Suits to grant carte blanche to rubber stamp the THS project.

In the picture, JIV wears a blue shirt and dark-colored tie. He got dressed in the dark that morning. His sleeves are rolled up. He is a “Hard Worker.” The Mac laptop in front of him shows he just lost at Solitaire. Amuso wears a light blue blouse. Her hands are folded to her face. The right hand grips a black pen. The table in front of her is covered with papers. “Must Be Important.” The fossil wears a pink shirt, no tie. His left arm rests upon the table. The right elbow rests upon the table, arm leading up to face and fingers cradling chin. “Deep In Thought.”

Hard Worker, Must Be Important, and Deep In Thought were photographed by Jonathan Levine at a SBNC meeting in which Gilbane Building Company made a presentation. The SBNC selected Gilbane to manage the THS construction.

The quotes are funny.

A Few Words, A Funny Picture

“This is a very exciting project,” said Mark Apdela‘s Gilbane’s senior manager of business development. Damn straight it’s exciting — for him. Not so much for Pittsfield taxpayers, who were never given a say in the multimillion dollar folly.

The Gazette article says “Gilbane is teaming up with Pittsfield-based Tierney Construction. Gilbane was the only bidder to partner with a local contractor for its proposal.” Read between the lines of that second sentence. That tells you everything you need to know about the manner in which this project was a fait accompli.

“This is a great thing for the City of Pittsfield,” said David Tierney of Tierney Construction, the developer of Hotel-On-North, the $400-a-night rat trap that employed a reputed gang member as a dishwasher, a teen who early in July, according to police, slashed the tires on a car, smashed the windshield, then stabbed the owner. Later in the month, HON lost the worker to a gang-related shooting.

From The Gazette: “Tierney vowed the project will involve many local subcontractors and workers.”

That quote sent The Boring Broadsheet into ecstasies of elation and euphoria. They devoted page one lead story to this Tierney pledge. That, too, tells you the rest of what you need to know about the phony THS deal.

THE PLANET reads Tierney’s quote this way: “The more ‘connected’ you are to the local political power players, the more pie you’re going to get. No tickee, no washee. There are rewards for playing ball.”

Of course, we could be wrong.

120 million for the school? I would like to go on record as predicting this school will cost at least 50 million more than that when all the bills come in. Three years from now when ALL the related bills come in it will have cost no less than 170 million dollars. This golden goose is going to make a lot of special interest folk smile from ear to ear.

Taxpayers? Not so much.

I believe your prediction is already true since the interest cost is going to be in that range. “They” have been planning a school for 10 years but haven’t set aside a penny from their fat budgets. By the time it’s paid off it will probably be scheduled for demolition

The high school project CANNOT exceed 120 million. No matter what the state has capped the project. The project must be completed within the alotted amount

I believe what you mean to say is, no matter what the final cost, the state won’t pay a penny more than their share of $120 million. It could certainly cost more…it’s inevitable it will.

Hi Dan,

Your article in which you stated that the state has pledged $77 million for the new THS that we don’t need. Curious, where does the state get its funds from?

The new school should be able to accommodate all the high school students so that Pittsfield high school can be converted into new city hall and new police station. Just an idea worth exploring.

when I inquired about that idea to a SC member – I was informed that that issue was put to bed 10 years ago. I asked her if she makes her daily decisions based on 10 year old information? does she update her thinking as times and conditions change? (I got a scowl and the hand wave).

only in Government do they make plans going out 5-10-15 years, and then use those plans as current justification.

It is good to plan to try and anticipate future needs, but if conditions on the ground warrant a new plan – intelligent people adjust accordingly.

this is why no creative or new thinking ever originates with Government.

Of course it should be able to accommodate all the students but for some reason those making the decisions want to keep PHS open. Nostalgia I guess.

The nostalgia for a resident’s high school is what kept the whole question off of the ballot.
I predict that PHS and Taconinc will be merged into a single high school for Pittsfield. And I think it will not be named PHS. It will be named for an as yet unidentified politician. Democrat of course.

“The Suits see government as their own private club. The only involvement they want from you is to keep your mouth shut and pay your ever-increasing taxes.”

This sums up the whole progressive philosophy perfectly. It is like a private club in which the major players are far removed from the people they are elected to serve? Serve? They don’t even know that word. It’s demeaning to them. Their type of governing puts them in a category in which they do not need to answer to the public for their actions. This is why questionable ethical practices are not addressed by this elite group. They do as they please. The general public is shut out of major decisions because big daddy government knows best. Is this the type of government we want? Because this is currently the type of government that we have right here in Pittsfield.

It is not! This is outrageous when one school could accommodate all of Pittsfield high school students and they would no longer be downtown crossing the street against traffic. The current Pittsfield high could gradually be remodeled for city offices so as to maintain a building that has sentimental and historic value. Parking at city hall would be alleviated. All city department could actually be located in one building. A significant consolidation of school department functions could be accomplished. The current town hall could be repurposed. I’m sure there is a lot more ideas to add to this.

PV POSTERS I WILL BE DETAILING ON MY FRIDAY SHOW WHAT I PLAN TO DO TO REDUCE PSD BUDGET. YOU MUST BE AWARE OF ONE POINT THAT I AND DAN VALENTI MADE ON SEVERAL OCASIONS IN THE PAST–. AT PRESENT THE MAYOR HAS NO SAY IN THE PSD BUDGET SHORT OF JUST BEING A FIGURE HEAD. LOTHROP AND KROL AND 5 OTHER CC STOOGES TOOK CONTROL OF THE PSD BUDGET AND CONVINCED THE STOOLE PIGEON ROTTON COTTON –TO SUBMIT A PETITION INSURING THAT THE PETITION WOULD PASS– TAKING AWAY CONTROL OF THE SCHOOL FROM THE MAYOR AND GIVING THEMSELVES SOLE CONTROL. KROL– EVEN HAD THE GAUL TO SAY IF THE LAW WERE ENACTED THEN– HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN THE PSD EVEN MORE THAN THE 101 MILLION DOLLARS OF YOUR HARD EARNED DOLLARS.– OF COURSE– IF YOU DONT KNOW WHY THEY DID THIS LET ME TELL YOU!!!! — THE SEVEN WHO VOTED TO TAKE AWAY CONTROL OF THE PSD BUDGET DID IT TO PREVENT ME FROM HAVING THE SAY OF THE PSD BUDGET WHEN I BECOME MAYOR. YES EVEN THAT FAR BACK THE CC WAS BECOMING VERY FEARFUL THAT I JUST MIGHT BE THE NEW MAYOR IN 2016 AND THEY DID THIS TO TRY TO STOP ME FROM MAKING THE NECESSARY CUTS THAT WE ALL KNOW NEED TO BE MADE TO SAVE OUR CITY. I THINK EVERYBODY OUT THERE KNOWS I AM THE ONLY CHOICE FOR MAYOR AND I WILL FIND AWAY AROUND RESTORING TO THE MAYOR THE RIGHTFUL POWER HE OR SHE SHOULD HAVE IN MAKING DECISIONS REGARDING THE PSD BUDGET. EVERYONE OUT THERE GO BACK AND READ EVERY WEEKEND POST ON THIS SITE. YOU WILL FIND SOME TO BE VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE AND I WILL STATE AGAIN THAT I AM THE ONLY CHOICE FOR MAYOR AND I NEED THE SUPPORT OF EVERYONE OF YOU AND MANY MORE IF WE ARE GOING TO TAKE OUR CITY BACK FROM THESE GOB SOB’S TIME IS SHORT– DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO GET ME AS MANY VOTES AS YOU CAN BECAUSE IF I LOSE I STILL WIN BUT IF I LOSE (YOU) LOSE BIG -BIG TIME, I CANT MAKE IT ANY PLAINER THAN THAT—-CRAIG

feathers –look i am only posting you back because i see something in your post to me that you are trying to convey something to me and i get it—you are absolutely correct that a mayor cant be a dictator and must be able to get along with people. it may come as a great surprise to you that i am indeed a peoples person. all my life i had jobs that put me in contact with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people. as a teacher– i had more students than i care to count as it makes me feel old– when i think about it. did i have some problem types? yes but even they would come to respect me as they knew that i was giving them the best education i could give them and they knew it. i was concerned that as many as i could reach would follow my advise to study study study to learn how to think and listen and do their best. many tried and tried but just couldnt get it but i never flunked a student who tried-i knew chemistry and physics and biology posed a challenge to many but by trying every day as best they could they all got more of those sciences than they realized until they got to college.. some of my students who didnt think they learned much about those sciences realized they did and many thanked me. in my years teaching graduate students at the lenox institute for research owned by dr. milos krofta and run by dr. lawrence k wang– i had many top flight students as the prerequisite to get into the program was to be an engineer or scientist with a minimum of 3.5gpa. there dr wang and dr. krofta and i could give them a better background in environmental engineering in an 8 week program than they could attain at a recognized graduate school over a several year program. this required vast interactions with our students and requiring good people skills and finally in my positions at krofta engineering corp. krofta waters inc. and the lenox institute for research– good people skills and cooperation was the order of the day there also. so yes– you are right– one needs those skills that you mentioned in your post. the campaign here is so short and so closed it became necessary to stop liars who were spewing hate toward me to freeze them right in their tracks. do i love people? of course- do you think i am running for the salary it pays or the glory? no feathersi am running to try to save the city i love. i dont know any other way to do that then run for mayor. i hope i answered your questions and if there are other things i can do to make our city better just post –i will get back to you—craig

1. The school budget does not show the 5 million plus dollars
that is sent out for school choice and charter school. This
money is basically taken from non school departments.

2. Pomeroy Ave. has been a mess for at least 2 months. The
residents that I talked to have had problems with alignments
and tires. I told them to sent the bill to their elected
officials.

3. Elm St. is still not finished.

4. Affordable housing is a sign of economic development failure.

Side note: Former mayor Ruberto’s car was parked in the
