TONIGHT’S MAYORAL DIET: FASTBALLS HIGH AND TIGHT

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY, OCT. 29, 2015) — There’s a scene in Woody Allen‘s Take the Money and Run where with his character, Virgil, is caught up in a bank robbery and sentenced to time in a Southern work camp straight out of redneck hell. You know the kind. The camp has no walls because it’s surrounded by miles of deadly swamps filled with gators, snakes, quicksand, and disease — kind of like any room where the Pittsfield School Committee meets.

When the camp “boss” dresses down “the new meat” to go over the rules, he barks, “Are there any questions?” No one dares to even look up, except for Virgil, who raises his hand.

“Well?” the straw boss screams.

“Do you believe in petting on the first date?”

——– 000 ——–

THE PLANET won’t ask anything that tough during tonight’s “discussion” with mayoral candidates Dan Bianchi and Linda Tyer. We will, however, be sure to give the pair the best grilling they’ve received thus far in the campaign. As we told one of our students yesterday when asked about tonight, “I like my politicians ‘well done.’”

People love to watch these events for the same reason they watch NASCAR and gawk at accidents: the possibility of an implosion or explosion.

We used the term “discussion” because it’s more accurate than “debate” (connotes formality) or “forum” (brings up images of ancient Rome and Charles Laughton dressed in a white toga). A “discussion,” on the other hand, means people involved in the exchange of information, a back-and-forth, give-and-take centering on issues relevant to the campaign.

“Discussion” also allows more room for the host or moderator. If you’ve been on Mars with Ben Affleck and didn’t know, THE PLANET has the honors this evening beginning at 7 p.m. and running for the hour on PLANET VALENTI TELEVISION, Channel 16. A “discussion” liberates us from the stodgy role of “robot reading prefab questions” and puts us right there, in equal footing with the candidates, able to zig and zag with them, in real time. That’s as it should be. True, we are not running for mayor. However, we represent the most important party in an event like this. That would be The Little Guy.

Fastballs, High and Tight

We shall be representing Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, the citizen-owners of government. THE PLANET shall conduct a job interview for the owners, chucking fastballs hard, high, and tight.

We have moderated many events like this over the years for radio, print, and TV, so many that we’ve lost count. Our style is respectfully belligerent. THE PLANET shall not make the mistake of allowing either candidate to control the night. Our job is to make it equally distressing for each. This flows naturally from our default position when caught in rhetorical joust — When you’re pushed, push back harder. If you have to dodge one, make them dodge two. You get the point.

We will do this within under the all-important rubic of relevance. If a question, topic, or area pertains to any aspect of Pittsfield’s civic life, it has a place. Now with just one hour with which to work, shorthand cannot be avoided. The idea isn’t to cover everything; it’s to cover enough. “Enough” is when the conversation reveals not just the positions of the candidates but also their characters. It’s what they say and how they say it. It’s body language. It’s their reactions when confronted.

In the end, the test of a successful discussion shall be if the electorate came away better able to cast an intelligent vote.

THE PLANET’s advice for our right honorable good friends Dan and Linda is simple. Bring your A Game. You can be sure we’ll be bringing ours.

It is a bit shocking that these two did not get together and agree to boycott your debate.

Dan, paaleeeessseeee, stop the filibustering in its tracks. Bianchi knows that if he can ramble on in a litany of obfuscation he will cut down on the time left for serious questions he would rather not answer. No one can say so little with so many words than he can.

Tyer sounds like she has been memorizing questions and answers that may come up in a debate. And this exercise will come in handy during her four year puppet show.

The show will be entertaining I am sure. But no matter which of these two gets the most votes in the election the people will get a lousy mayor. It is a position sought after for power and money, not because someone wants to do right by the citizens.

The little guy wants Unwavering Leadership ,Accountability, Transparancy….since when does a Mayor feel so unexpendable that he can Control every facet of information from the Citizens ? The little guy doesn’t want a finger pointer. The little guy wants to hear that losing 300 jobs at Sabic is a game changer for the City and the Taxpayers. It will impact the financial demographics substantially. The fallout is huge. The Taconic High School is becoming a bigger sword of contention.

Well I got my Re-Elect Bianchi card in the mail today with a wonderful note from the Sheriff. It was reassuring to know that the current Mayor and the Sheriff are on a Public Safety Task force that discusses strategies to prevent crime. I guess they forgot to add that during both of their terms over the past four years shootings in the streets, guns in schools, and gang activity has increased in Pittsfield on their watch more than any past administrations.

Cronyism at is best….

Out of respect for the a Planet there won’t be any disparaging remarks concerning tonight’s debate other than iTMS a lose/ lose. I don’t see why any debate at this point will make a difference in choice as I don’t like either candidate and we’ve already heard the kiddos and Bobby Kennedy quotes. Let’s see if the Planet can come up with some real hard questions.

Maybe putting a 2 or 3 minutes time limit on their answers would allow you to cover the most ground since there is a lot of ground to cover with these two. Really zero in on the greedy school system, the rising number of poor in the city, and the lack of jobs. Crime too. These are the most important issues in the city. Really looking forward to this debate as this will be saving the best debate for last.

Dan,

Something to ask tonight. There are many communities competing for GE’s headquarters. See the Tampa link below for an example. Please ask what has been done or will be done to recruit GE to return to their soon to be vacated buildings on Plastics Ave. Not much time, they plan to decide by the end of the year.

I can assure you there is not a single thing that Pittsfield or the State of Massachusetts can offer that will recruit GE’s world headquarters to the Berkshires. Between the tax structures, the dismal school performance, the poor job/skills matching, and the crime, there is zero, zilch. Not even worth wasting the time. The poor jobs/skills matching match was why Pittsfield wasn’t competitive foe the rail car assembly.

Nota, Everyone should read the Eagle opinion page in today;s newspaper. Letters from all the usual Gob;s and the Eagle;s
endorsement of Linda nobody Tyer. If the Eagle HAD ANY GUTS THEY WOULD HAVE ENDORSED Mr. GAETANI. This would have been a strong message that they aren’t part of the Gob network. Mr.Gaetani is the only candidate for Mayor who can put the city on sound financial footings,He is the only candidate who consistently proposed ideas to reduce the city budget with the consistent goal of rescuing the Maryjane andJOE karpanski;s. I am very disappointed that DV did not invite him to tonight’s debate. Mr. Valenti is giving validity two these two nobodies by hosting them on his show. I will not watch the debate, as I have seen enough of these two that i have become ill. It is time for every voter in the city to get behind Gaetani , or soon, there will not be a city. A vote for Tyer or Bianchi means writing bigger checks to pay your property taxes.

It is fact that every Department cannot speak or make a move. Everything goes through Bianchi. Even shutting Citizens out. This is not Democracy. This guy points fingers when things go wrong and takes credit for others accomplishments. He is a Micro Manager, and that alone poisons everything he touches. In my opinion he does more damage than Pittsfield can afford every day he is on the job. Pittsfield will be hugely better off voting him out.

Isaid I would not watch the debate but I did and am glad I did. It should be perfectly clear the Tyer is not Mayoral timber. Bianchi for his part, was clearly superior to Tyer. The only candidate who is superiorly more qualified than either of these two weak candidates is Mr. Gaetani. It is too bad that he wasn’t invited to the debate. Bianchi destroyed Tyer and Gaetani would have destroyed Bianchi. After seeing the debate, i believe Gaetani;s stock will rise. I am glad DV brought up OPEB. this was one of the center pieces in Mr. Gaetani’s campaign. Neither Tyer or Bianchi have a clue how to solve this lumbering giant that destroyed Deroit and Sacramento. I am still with Gaetani. After this debate we need him more than ever and i will definitely be voting for him and i suggest that everyone else on the planet vote for him also, Mr. Gaetani is the only salvation for the Maryjane and Joe Kapanski’s

little do you know shakes it isn’t my first rodeo, but honestly we all have our opinions. Are you even in ward 1 or just a negative commentator. Credibility well hell if that is what your looking for then don’t vote for anyone with a political background in any election. It’s people like you who complain but do nothing to solve the problems. That type of attitude promotes the corruption that we have bestowed upon ourselves today.

If I do vote for someone without a political background, it will be someone that has acts like a reasonable adult. I’ve spent my career in public service working for less money to feel like a make a difference. Bellicose sophomoric attitudes do nothing but divert attention and resources from people, and there are plenty of them in Ward 1 and the rest of the City that need it instead of you.

Dont want the attention shakes what so ever but we will not sit idly by while the city officials turn a blind eye while these ‘neighbors’ act out. Really just want to left alone and definitely are not look to take any type of resources from anyone. Hell i offer free labor everyday. Just keep in mind we didnt start the fight we are fighting back.

Dan,

I think you’ve got Ward 7 wrong. Although I like Ms. Lloyd, I think Tony Simonelli will be reelected. Ms. Lloyd’s followers seem to be a group of young hipsters and the few young people who actually do vote make their choices based more on emotion than logic. Tony has, often times, been the voice of reason on an otherwise dysfunctional council and stays clear of drama in the council chambers and on the campaign trail. The larger group of older voters who vote more from logic than emotion will reelect Simonelli. And, by the way, I think Ms. Lloyd would make a groovy councilor at large.

I agree with Ed Shepardson. Tony has been a great councilman for ward 7. He is always accessible. He answers every email very quickly. He keeps us all very informed as to what is going on with various issues. During any type of emergency situations he emails us with all the relevant information including all the emergency phone numbers we may need. I also met Kathy Lloyd and though she was very nice. I think she may be a better candidate for an at large seat. Tony has been the best councilman ward 7 has seen in a very, very long time.

SG, You’re absolutely right. Former mayor Ruberto appointed Mike Wynn as acting police chief, Bianchi kept him. He could replace him with anyone on an acting basis, but permanent appointments are from a civil service list overseen by Boston and it may not be current. Most top law enforcement positions are appointed and serve at the pleasure of the executive branch. The governor appoints the superintendent of state police, the President appoints the director of the FBI, DEA,etc. All ranks above lieutenant are appointed in the NY State Police, for example. Most police chiefs are appointed by the mayor and serve at their pleasure.

Bianchi was the clear winner in tonight’s debate. Tyer repeats the same line about public safety and doesn’t have any depth to most of her other answers and statements. Bianchi called her out on this.

Tyer looked foolish tonight. When asked questions that she doesn’t have her spoon fed cook book answers for she shows her true colors. She is not qualified to manage a convenience store let alone a city. She didn’t even know which branch of government the position of mayor is. Good grief!
