WAL*MART ‘PITTSFIELD’ WATER WISKS WORRY … or … ‘NO ONE WAS AT RISK’

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY JUNE 9, 2016) — Have you heard the one about the Pittsfield taxpayer who bought his own water — twice? She first paid for the family’s water via the city’s enormous water bill. She next paid for it by buying bottled water at Wal*Mart, the house brand. On the label, it identifies the source of the “spring” as regular municipal tap water from Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Beaver Fever, anyone?
THE PLANET is not making this up. The Wal*Mart chain — yes, Pittsfield, Forbes Magazine rated your very own the worst in the nation — bottles and sells Pittsfield tap water.
This ties in nicely with the story we broke last month (you don’t expect The “new” Boring Broadsheet to be that entrepreneurial, do you?).
Were City Residents Drinking Tainted Water?
In the Pittsfield water bill mailed on April 22, the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) informed citizens that a water sample taken March 2 from the Ashley Reservoir showed abnormal turbidity levels. The letter warned of “an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms.” It further stated that babies, those with “compromised immune systems,” and the elderly were particularly at risk.
Beautiful. The city knew about this on March 2 but said nothing until a snail-mailing on April 22. The letter advised of the heightened risk. This begs the question: Were city residents drinking tainted water for the intervening seven weeks? The city mailing claims that the dangerous levels “occurred for [only] one and a half hours.”
Can this information be trusted? After having been lied to so many time, do you believe anything the city of Pittsfield tells you?
A source familiar with activities inside the DPU supplied THE PLANET with a copy of an e-mail DPU commissioner Bruce Collingwood sent to councilor president Peter Marchetti and mayor Linda Tyer on May 13, after we initially broke the story. Seems THE PLANET broke the unwritten media rule in the city by asking tough questions.
“The public was never in danger,” Collingwood wrote. “DEP was notified the next day[,] and we followed their directions for notifying the public. The notification was a stand-alone mailing to all water users; we did not want it to be confused with any other mailing?” Pathetic, eh?
One of the questions THE PLANET brought up was why the city didn’t use the CodeRed notification system, which would have informed city residents immediately of the problem. Even 90 minutes of risk should have warranted the use of CodeRed.
“CodeRed is a great notification system[,] but it was not necessary in this situation,” Collingwood concluded. Those were his last words in the memo, which ends just like that. Poof!
Go through the illogic of this:
(a) The city’s own documents admit the water contained increased risk of disease-causing organisms.
(b) It cautioned that babies, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems were particularly compromised.
(c) Nonetheless, Collingwood states to the mayor and Marchetti that CodeRed wasn’t necessary. They apparently took him at their word. There’s no indication of any follow-up or demand for proof.
CodeRed wasn’t necessary. All we have is Collingwood’s word, in a leaked e-mail. The public was never informed of the potential danger at any time prior to April 22. Apparently, this behavior is acceptable in The Tyer Administation.
Truthin’ or Consequentin’?
Perhaps Collingwood is “truthin’,” but given the city’s track record with honesty and openness, THE PLANET would advise extreme caution. Collingwood makes two absolute claims: (1) “[t]he public was never in danger” and (2) prompt notification of the water failure “was not necessary.” He does not, however, offer any documentation to support the claim.
Now, back to Wal*Mart bottling and selling Pittsfield water.
- Under what arrangement is this retail behemoth doing it?
- Is Pittsfield being compensated? If so, how much and under what terms? If not, why not?
- How is the bottling physically done and where? Take us through the process.
- Why would Wal*Mart want to do this, given the city’s problems with PCBs and industrial toxins that are the sad adjunct from GE’s 100 years in Pittsfield?
Pittsfield’s DPU publishes a sheet titled, “CITY OF PITTSFIELD WATER QUALITY / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.” The final question on the list asks: “Where can I find information on water test results?” It gives the address www.cityofpittsfield.org/DPU/2015. You may go there. THE PLANET, however, suggests the latest copy of “Fractured Fairy Tales.”

The danger dissipated after an hour and a half? Wanna buy a bridge?
Whatever rate they pay should be specified in city code. Because it is an enterprise funded operation paid for with user fees, that should not be allowed a back room deal, er, negotiated contract.
Pittsfield water comes far from Pittsfield doesn’t it? And it should be the safest in the world according to the grand water Puba?
If Collingwood could follow simple instructions there would be no problem.
Not everyone will like this statement but the Krofta sandfloats gives us some of the best water in the U,S. Collingwood is doing his best to screw up the protocals. If hr followed the simple rules he would be fine but he is incapable of following simple instructions.
I’m watching Sturgeon, Yon and McCaandless on channel 16. Three very sad individuals who don’t come close to having a clue…..so, so very sad:((((((((
The big question is how does Wal-Mart obtain the water? Is there a deal we don’t know about?
(Sarcasm): I believe Wal-Mart goes to Silver Lake and bottles Pittsfield’s PCBs-laden water. A portion of their sales goes to Jack Welch’s retirement account so he can build his old age home on the shores of Silver Lake. He can shoot over to Teo’s hot-dogs for lunch after his brisk morning swim. It is Wal-Mart and GE’s gift to Pittsfield!
When the plant was set up they must have gone through the permitting process and that should be public record
FACT:
The lovely Linda Tyer proposed raising both the water and sewer rates. Those two operate on enterprise accounts funded by the users. The water rates are proposed to increase by 2 percent while the sewer rate is expected to rise by 6.7 percent.
“Both increases are driven by the increase in debt service from recently completed capital projects and the retirement board fees associated with enterprise employees,” wrote Commissioner of Public Utilities Bruce Collingwood.

My GUESS is that the water comes from that plant out in West Pittsfield where the old drive in theater use to be. They get water from the same water mains as the residents and they radiate it to remove the chlorine and sell it back to us at Walmart and other local stores. I am sure they would rather keep this quiet because it does seem kind of stupid to be paying twice for your own water.
Another question might be , “is this place getting a TIF?”
Radiation removes chlorine?
Walmart should put that on the label:
Chlorine removed by radiation.
It will make people feel warm and fuzzy all over.
Pcb contamination testing is not required.
I thought heat or activated charcoal removed chlorine.
It is and more. It was one of airport J-lo’s pet projects.
Collingwood runs a medical fraud administering cure-all enemas (seriously) and was even caught in accounting fraud by the city…of course since he such an outstanding representation of Pittsfield government his workload was reduced and he was given a huge raise
The Sturgeon show read off a list of kids that did very well nationally as a reason to stop questioning the schools .Bill would have you believe that Mayor Joe Curtis of failed morningside school zoo and Mayor Behnke 30 k raise had something to do with their success.
If a student does well by hitting 2 home runs in a baseball game does that mean Mayor Behnke and Mayor Curtis had anything to do with that….Bill you need get the facts.Bill must also have the income to not worry about school uncontrolled spending.
Stop questioning the schools? Ridiculous. Bill Sturgeon is a suck-up to the establishment.
He fetches their paper and slippers but most of all rolls over and plays dead.
He’s the exact opposite of DV. Not a trained journalist, a shill.
So, not so far from the truth as in other Communities, people are receiving free bottled water in places like Hoosac Falls N.Y. and in essence, if Pittsifled felt the need to do the same for it’s residents, and Wal Mart was carting the free bottled water, well (no pun intended) wouldn’t citizens could be drinking the same water for which it is temporarily been replaced……..Nice?
Not exactly….it is treated at the local plant which hopefully makes it OK
still, taxpayers are paying a small fortune for it to be OK the first time around
and stuff does happen……but no one should be fibbing about it
Small fortune? It’s my understand that the water savior cause Pittsfield to have competitively low water rates.
Originally true. but the city has raised the rates many times since that heroic installation. It is now a source of bleeding the taxpayer.

Hoosick Falls residents cannot drink water out of the entire system. No comparison to Pittsfield.
Walmart gets Pittsfields’ water from the Ice River Springs plant on W. Housatonic St. There is a steady stream of Walmart trailers in and out of there all day long.
Right. And Ice River Springs water comes from the Pittsfield water mains. Very same water that comes out of your faucet until they magically turn it into “Ice River Springs” water. One of the many hoaxes in Pittsfield.
I wonder how many people would make up facts if they had to use their real names. Any bottled water labeled as ‘spring water’ comes from a spring. Other products like Dasani are just filtered tap water. Ice River Springs bottles both types.
Are you suggesting that the ICE RIVER SPRINGS water bottling plant in West Pittsfield has drilled a deep well and is pumping spring water from the ground???
I don’t think so. All labeling is sketchy these days. Read Consumer reports.
Dude, read their website. They truck it in from VT.
The label on the walmart bottles reads Soucre: Pittsfield, Ma Municipal Water. It says it in plain English. No springs involved.
Dan Valenti asks Can this information be trusted?
Bruce Collingwood is in charge…… Snail Mail……follow the incompetence……………….
I wonder how many people would still throw around words like ‘incompetence’ if they had to use their real names on this site.
Truth is Truth…. no matter who you are!!
I always wonder if Mayor Yon or Mayor Amuso or Mayor Mazzeo balance their checkbooks at home or does someone else always have to make the balance good for them by depositing more money to cover their wants…new car…new shoes…..new house keeper….lawn guy…..new furniture
do you have a problem with women?
I don’t. I think Kroll is a nice girl.
Put a filter on your tap, you’ll get the same thing
Maybe I’ll ask the Planet ( big bucks ) if he’ll front a new bottled water company, we’ll call it Housatonic on Ice – Berkshires Best. I’ll have my Buddy G-Man filter it, that guy can turn piss into gold. Collingwood can be a laborer.
Good idea Cat. I’ll provide the transport, since this stuff is so valuable, we’ll get some of those Lenco Vehicles to move it.
If you are already a millionaire you might be able to talk the establishment into giving you a tax break. Wannabees need not apply.
Looks like somebody from city hall faxed over another “opinion” piece to the Eagle. Some people lament that most of us do not use our real names on this blog but even the esteemed Berkshire Eagle protects its workers from putting their name to articles. When I say “workers” I mean city hall workers who send the articles over to the Eagle.

$20,000 technical assistance grant for engineering, legal and training services related to the development of a manufacturing facility at 1505 West Housatonic Street, Pittsfield
Company Overview:
This international bottling company was looking for a new facility and workforce with the potential to continue their success. With the purchase of the former K-B warehouse at 1505 West Housatonic Street, their goal of a new manufacturing and distribution center was within reach – as was the potential for full time job creation for the area. PERC worked closely to find them a grant to encourage this mutually beneficial move and today the facility is thriving and still expanding operations

Thanks, Joe
There is something about that word PERC……Lol
This makes it even worse. Another “priovate” company that only got started because of free $$ from city taxpayrs. Another Pittsfield scam.
I’ve always wanted to bottle water. Won’t be long before they charge for oxygen.
Off topic, but for several days thr Eagle’s editorial reads that residency requirements are wrong for Pittsfield.
Warren Dewes is an Eagle VP. His wife is Mayor Tyer ‘s, director of administrative services or whatever. They reside in Hinsdale. Objective opinion ?
Interesting Mrs. Dewes predecessors in the same postion were; Mrs. Sanborin of Richmond, Ms. Matoon of Canaan, NY and by an oversight, Mrs. McGuiness of Pittsfield.
This is how we keep it all in the Family !!!
Yaba daba Dews iis a clown.
Only in Pittsifled.

Obviously James the Great knows Bill Sturgeon as well as I do. He’s had a brown nose and knee pads since his military days!
