‘UNDEAD’ PRIMARY GIVES WAY TO PRESIDENTIAL NOVEMBER … CONNELL, CANNING GO UP AGAINST ‘THE MACHINE’ in TFB, HINDS
BY DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY SEPT. 12, 2016) — What does THE PLANET need to say about last week’s zombie primary? The election never came to life. “Undead” would be a more apt description.
There were no winners. Two candidates outpolled the others, but no one wins when 80% don’t vote. This particularly has to eat away at Mike Bloomberg, who lost against an entrenched incumbent by 382 votes out about 5,000 cast. Adam Hinds win over Andrea Harrington in the senate race was more convincing — almost 2,500 votes out about 15,000+. Even all Rinaldo Del Gallo’s tallies (1,065) wouldn’t have helped Harrington. The only ones who could have done that were those who did not vote.
Consequently, “nobody” was the only winner — if we are to claim a belief in “democracy.”
The Next Phase: November
This sets up the general election in November. There will be many more voters, principally because of the presidential race. There will also be two “money” questions on the ballot to get people to the polls, including asking voters to voluntarily raise their taxes (1 to 3% hike), otherwise known as the deceptively named “Community Preservation Act” (CPA). The only thing the CPA will preserve are slush funds for the special interests.
In November, Pittsfield will choose a new house representative from incumbent Democrat Tricia Farley-Bouvier and independent Chris Connell. For the senate race, Hinds faces Republican Christine Canning.
The early line has TFB and Hinds in walk-away wins. The wise guys reason TFB will get most of Bloomberg’s votes, since the lad endorsed her (and kissed the party Bosses’ rings). This greatly enhances the far-lesser candidate’s return to the house.
Bloomberg’s strategy is as obvious as the innards of The Visible Man. He’s cozying up to his political future by endorsing TFB. Will that be a state office once TFB bails out for future glory (see Peter Larkin, Chris Speranzo, and others)? Will it be for a Pittsfield city council seat next year? A mayoral run two years after? It’s sad to see one so young and promising sell out so soon for the short-end money.
With Bloomberg’s announcement, Connell’s road to victory becomes tougher. How does he find the votes? One answer is offer a stark alternative to TFB’s tired uber-“progressivism.” Connell must attack her vulnerabilities (many) and energize voters. TFB is an incredibly dull campaigner who lacks imagination, spontaneity, and offers utterly predictable positions. Connell brings name recognition and, he says, enough funding for a serious bid.
Canning Needs More ‘Professionalism’
In the senate race, Canning’s battle makes Connell’s task look simple. Hinds comes well-funded with huge organizational support. He patiently worked his way well into the Democrat establishment and has emerged as its new Golden Boy. Moreover, as the primary went along, he found a rhythm — no thanks to his “Committee.”
That may be Canning’s slim chance, to use “The Committee to Elect Adam Hinds” against themselves. They shot their own candidate with respect to THE PLANET, keeping him away from us until we forced a one-on-one with their guy, who handled himself well. The Committee tends to over-script their man, who’s best when he chucks “the script.” Canning must pray The Committee convinces Hinds put on the straightjacket again.
Canning’s other problem is her political naivete’. If it continues, her campaign will be over before it begins. For example, on election night, Canning set up a photo-op to congratulate Hinds, who, while enjoying a sweet victory, forgot about her. To complicate matters, Canning’s daughter had been rushed to the emergency room. On Facebook, Canning ripped Hinds’, but it was her mistake to go there in the first place. It looked weak, like she “needed” him to legitimize her. She compounded the mistake by waiting, cooling her Keds for a conciliatory gesture that did more harm than good.
The second example comes from her assumption she will not need much money to defeat Hinds. She boasted the primary “cost me 1/25 of what he paid for the same campaign. What cost him $55,000 for this basic primary … cost me doing it myself — without building this fake Empire — less than $2950.”
True, but Hinds faced a legitimate challenger. Canning faced no one. She would have advanced to November with one vote on the Republican ballot and spending $1.27. Her “without the money” statement seems to be admitting she’s not going to raise the dough to compete.
If so, she has Zero chance.
Message to Canning: You’re going to need cash and lots of it.

If the citizens of Pittsfield and western Massachusetts are happy with what the Democrats have done and are still doing to us then the party of Berkshire destruction will prevail. But here is a chance for positive change by electing the CC’s .
A chance if people got to the Voting Booth. VOTES matter.
It is unbelievable how voters can continue to support the very people who are destroying the Berkshires. What’s in it for them? Obviously their own personal finances is the answer. Many of the voters are school employees who are happy with their own personal finances thanks to TFB’s support. That the rest of the Berkshires is falling apart around them is a non-issue for this group of people. It’s all about their own personal bank balance.
More people going to the polls would definitely help because no doubt only a fraction of school employees needed to show up to win the election for TFB. Berkshire County needs to remember that voting is EXTREMELY important to create change to save our county, our state, our country. Many people on this site said 20% showing up to the polls on Thursday was good for this area. That doesn’t speak well of Berkshire voters when your county is in deep trouble and only 20% bother to vote. Where are the rest of the voters who can win this fight against the uber progressives as Dan V. calls them?
If anyone can explain why the PPS still has an 85/15 cut with the city for insurance purposes I’d love to know. They all voted democrat, which in turn raised our insurance premiums. Yet, they pay piddle every month for top of the line care (we the tax payers pay our own and theirs essentially)
Then yearly “living increases” then they argue for actual raises in the contracts while making tens of thousands more than the average household.
I was a public school teacher for years. It’s disgusting how far it has gotten. It’s an entitlement at this point
I am in total agreement with this. The 85-15 has to be adjusted or the city will crash.
Not one of hte politicians in the race has discussed this. They don’t dare. But I tell you this any mayoral candidate, a real one not the idiot token ones we see every election (not Tyer, not Bianchi for example the last time but the other two whose names I cant recall!!) who pushes this would win based on high turnout.
Hahahaha. All you will do is trade one set of cronies for another.
It doesn’t matter who wins in Pittsfield politics because the municipality is going to go financially insolvent soon. Moreover, Tricia Farley-Bouvier, whom I support because I share her political views on the issues, has to follow the top-down State House “leadership” of Speaker (for life) Bob DeLeo. Furthermore, Adam Hinds will have to follow Senate Prez Stan Rosenberg’s “leadership”. TFB & Hinds are more like bureaucrats than Legislators. They will get rewarded for “just following orders” from their political bosses in Boston. Pittsfield politics is in financial trouble next fiscal year of 2018!
How can you share TFB’s political views on issues if she is taking her orders from Boston? Unless you also agree with Rosenberg and DeLeo? That would make you an uber progressive which most of us on this board are strongly against.
Anyone other than Taconic 120 million and school choice charter school supporter. Why can’t Republicans get behind public schools and get rid of School choice….its been a financial disaster.Republican party use to be about smart spending.Trisha is a hypocrite. She also voted to all electronic companies raise rates 50%
I don’t think she’s on the utility commission.
Anyone but the Dem. Sheep. Canning won’t win Connel has good chance.
Really?
Connell stands no chance. The guy is dumb but acts like he is the smartest guy in the room, no matter who is in the room.
Connell stands an excellent chance. He’s good. compared to Trish hes a combnation of Winston Churchill and De Gaulle.
Chris Connell? No thanks, I want lower taxes not higher.
Connell couldn’t be any worse than TFB.
My city taxes have gone up more than state. Thanks Chris Connell
There is no room for that kind of statement.
It really is unbelievable that Hillary is diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday morning and rather than being upfront with the public the Clinton campaign hides the information from the public. It comes back to bite them when on Sunday Hillary collapses. They just do not know how to be honest. If she becomes president, expect lots of smoke and mirrors.
Pittsfield politics and the Hillary campaign have SO MUCH in common. They do not know how to value transparency. This is why Hillary is so popular here in Berkshire County especially Pittsfield.
It is unbelievable how voters can continue to support the very people who are destroying the Berkshires.
It really is unbelievable that Hillary is diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday morning and rather than being upfront with the public
Is anything believable to you Pat?
Not when it comes to progressives. They need to go.
Canning also shot herself repeatedly in the foot by claiming election fraud and citing, as ‘proof,’ texts she received from people who claimed their votes were not reported… by media. Most media ignored her campaign in the primary because they had no reason to cover it, and when the votes were reported a lot of zeroes were shown, because they failed to get her numbers, and she then used that as proof of fraud. She claimed Adams reported zero votes for her, but she knew people who voted for her… iBerkshires had zero initially in their columns… but then the town clerk reported there were 34 votes for her in Adams… and iBerkshires didn’t report the numbers.
She also said she would contest the results in the Democratic primary, which Hinds won by several thousand votes and in which the second and third place contenders had already conceded. She stands no chance in November.
Correct. Canning by looking for “voting fraud” confirmed the belief of many that she’s just too out there, too much a loose canon. Hinds carries himself with more of a businesslike tone.
Also, as the article points out, she is practically conceding the race because of inability to raise funds.
As much of a moderate as I am, and despite being disgusted with the democratic stranglehold on MA politics… all the liquor in the world couldn’t get me to vote for Canning. She was proven crazy when she ran for the interim superintendents position in Adams-Cheshire
Wait is the Chris Canning the water boy’s crush?
I’m a Democrat and I will vote Canning and Connell…you have to send a message at some point….you can ride yourself of these 2 in 2 years
I wish there was someway we could get more voters to the polls. These people who get in office just because of low turnout is not representation of the people. It gives control to just a few.
They few that care enough to vote.
Reading the details of the alledged Sexual harassmennt charges at Berkshire Works by William Monterosso…..what an asshole! I hope they throw the book at this idiot.
I saw this a few minutes ago and came to see if anyone else noticed. Of course, Dan was the ONLY ONE to try shedding light on this. How much did this scumbags appointment and firing cost us so far? Much more to come!
They paid this asshole $100,000 to get rid of him. Guess what? That money should be given back.
He strongly resembles a paid staffer who Andrea Nuciforo hired from Kentucky to assist in his congressional campaign. He was put up in a Ridge Ave. Lake house on Pontoosuc Lake during the campaign. Just sayin.
voluntarily raise their taxes (1 to 3% hike), on the ballot for voters to vote on. No I would rather see no raises for any elected officials until they have been on the job for at least a year
Best part of the BerkshireWorks Monterosso article was the quoting of the former female employee. Wonder if he woulda hit on her if he knew she was going to be a former female?!?
He is from Kentucky
If she get to know you, she goin to own you..Neil Diamond.
Who’s dumb idea was the 3%tax and is our Mayor for it..is Marchetti for it
..Connell is he a walmart guy or not
Fireball’s girlfriend should step up like Ms. Steele and do the right thing.Pretty sure one of the attorney’s representing Fireball was a High Heel walkers, you can’t make it up.
Chris Canning does has a legitimate complaint. I went to vote at Reid Middle School, ward 1B and was unable to vote as I wanted, for Chris Canning. Remarkably, the Republican ballot listed no names! I did not look at just one ballot, I looked at several that hung on the walls, by the doors to the auditorium, down the hall to the stage. Not one of the ballots listed Christine Canning Wilson on it. When I went to the table to get my ballot, the Democrat ballot was thrust at me, giving me no option to choose Democrat or Republican. Of course, the Republican ballots on the table were also blank, I looked at them. I am not the only one that saw this, my daughter was with me to vote, also. I did not press the issue as these were the primaries but I was perplexed as to why Christine was not listed. I will make sure, before I go to vote in November, that the Republican ballots will indeed list Christine Canning Wilson on them. If not, I will write her in. Oh, by the way, I am listed a an Independent. I am rather disgusted as to what these once great parties, Democrat and Republican, have become and choose not to align myself with either.
You are right. I was asked which ballot I wanted at Reid School. I said I wanted the Republican ballot. I was told I might want to reconsider that because there was nothing on the Republican ballot. I said okay and asked for the Democrat ballot instead. I wasn’t thinking about Christine Canning at the time. It didn’t occur to me until after as I was more focused on voting against TFB and voting for another candidate I wanted on the Democrat ballot. This is horrible.
I got a kick how the media included Chris in the primary debates, Doesn’t make any scene to me that for someone that automatically is going to advance they would include her.
