MURDER AFTERMATH: TYER, WYNN AND CITY’S LESSER DIM BULBS AS CYNICAL AS IT GETS

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY OCT. 4, 2017) — The only silence you hear in the bedraggled city of Pittsfield comes from when the mayor, police chief, council president, and school committee chairwoman in that rank refuse to officially speak to the public through the press following yet another shooting and murder.

Indeed, if the Las Vegas mass murder had happened in the “dynamic, vibrant” city in the valley with the new $6000 cheeseball garbage cans, citizens begging for information would have discovered The Lovely Linda Tyer suddenly vacationing in Montreal, interim police chief Mike Wynn having rushed to an important charity golf tournament in Worcester, city council president Peter Marchetti playing with himself in a broom closet at the Pittsfield Co-op Bank, and school committee chief Kathy Yon having her body lowered after doctors determined the hopelessness of a facelift.

And so it happened again, a short Par 3 from Hotel on North and Trashcan Tyer’s “vibrant, dynamic” downtown, that a bystander met a piece of lead with her name not on it. That didn’t stop the bullet, however. Errant shots from a “hail of gunfire” do not have GPS.  A day after the shooting, morally bankrupt city “leaders” still had not uttered a word on the matter except for a lame statement from the D.A’s office, leaving the streets to begin their buzz. That’s not the best way to get information, but when the Knowers won’t spill what they know, the guessers will begin to guess.

THE PLANET wasn’t even looking for this story, but it found us. We were the first media outlet reporting the incident through our vast network of correspondents, spies, gum shoes, and Z-agents in the Secret Squadron, who got to us faster than Shot Spotter though not “faster than a speeding bullet.” PLANET commentators got word here first. From there, it spread like wildfire (yeah, “no one reads us!”). They couldn’t go to The Boring Broadsheet because that site’s new management long ago blocked access and shut down readers’ ability to comment on stories, something this site has never done and will never do.

THE PLANET gladly credits an assist from our colleagues at iBerkshires, with that website coming in shortly after with more details and at least the semblance of a news story. Under the circumstances, it did a great job.. In fact, through iBerkshires’ initial reports, we learned that the police department wouldn’t talk to the press. We put that in italics for emphasis. Dutifully, in its first story, iBerkshires reported that upsetting fact. In its update to the story, however, the website removed that juicy tidbit of information.

Here it is, a news organization calling the police on a murder, with a million questions outstanding, and the police refuse to talk. That, my friends, is spectacularly unacceptable. In any other city with the kind of responsible leadership Pittsfield does NOT have, that would have led to an immediate phone call from the corner office rectifying the situation, even if heads had to roll.

We also credit Masslive for being first in to publish a picture of the victim.

Here are the facts are we know them:

  • Just before 11 p.m. Monday night, a “hail of gunfire” broke out at and near the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Linden Street.
  • Asiyanna Jones, 22, was hit with a bullet.
  • Jones was a passenger in the front seat of a car. It appears the car was parked near there and not in motion, although that hasn’t been officially confirmed.
  • The driver of the car took the wounded woman to BMC (bad timing with the nurses on strike).
  • From there she was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
  • She died at 4 a.m.

Because neither the mayor nor police will officially answer reporters questions, THE PLANET went through the back door. In a “lockdown” city, neither press nor citizens are deemed worthy enough to receive the information they need to respectively report the facts thereby receiving the information they need to adequately self govern.

From police sources and our eyes and ears on the street, here’s what we’ve been told. Keep in mind that none of this is confirmed. Your clammed-up city officials would have it no other way:

  • Jones was in a parked car.
  • She wasn’t the intended victim.
  • She may have known one of the shooters.
  • The gunfire involved multiple shooters
  • There was a shootout, that is, shots fired and shots returned.
  • The shootout came from a gang turf dispute.
  • There also may have been a drug deal gone bad.
  • The police’s refusal to speak with iBerkshires came on direction.

Police sources, speaking strictly on condition of anonymity and on the further understanding that no actual quotes be used, say that after the shooting, a directive came from on high (Tyer? Wynn? They wouldn’t say.) not to speak with any press people calling about the incident, including THE PLANET. Here’s the worst part. They tell us further that the move was done while Jones was still alive.

Apparently, the city’s “leadership” were pinning their hopes on the shooting not being fatal, that the woman would recover. This would allow them to downplay the incident and even keep it from the public’s knowledge altogether, in a similar manner that you haven’t heard a further peep from Tyer, Wynn, or anybody else on the recent shooting-by-cop.

If that information is correct, the cynical move makes the sleaze of Pittsfield’s typical, everyday barroom politics look like they had just passed Mr. Clean‘s white-glove inspection. It would call for an independent and highly public probe. It would also be in line to demand the mayor’s immediate resignation.

That’s fantasy, we realize, because this is Pittsfield, where the nefarious, larded “taken care of” Elements own all of the city’s primary governmental, social, and cultural institutions: mayor’s office, city council, police and school departments, courts, local daily newspaper, museum, you name it: All, bought by The Suits, who will never sell back to citizens, at any price.

They only way Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski will ever get back their government is to take it by force.

That, too, will never happen. Unless …

Pittsfield is dead, thank you.

The mayor has recorded and shared a statement on Facebook. She is dressed like a clown – no really, it’s weird – and she starts off the statement with an inappropriate hint of humor. It’s bizarre.

The statement is bland and not helpful. Nor is it inspiring or particularly sincere. She shows no sign of being affected. At all.

And I think you are wrong on several of your observations/info. The story will come out but you can cross out drug deal gone bad and turf war. Sadly, the simplicity of the situation makes it that much more devastating. You’re right though, she was not the intended target.

When Carmen built the new jail, the criminals came to Pittsfield from all corners of Massachusetts, and now Pittsfield has shootings, murders, violent crime, drugs, and the opposite of a “Vibrant, Dynamic” community!

Downtown Pittsfield is a nice place to visit from 6 am to 6 pm. However, downtown Pittsfield is a scary place to be from 6 pm to 6 am! Pittsfield’s “Vibrancy” and “Dynamism” is taken over by violent criminals from dusk til dawn.

Pittsfield politics is part of the problem. Their response to every problem the city faces is to raise taxes, vote in their Good Old Boys stooges, and go on lockdown of information when there is a crisis.

On Tuesday morning police sirens were blaring throughout the city from 6 am to 10 am at least. Were they tracking down all those involved in the shootout? You are right Dan that this city does a complete lock down on information to the public at the time when we need it most.

Miss Tyer was not prepaired to be Mayor. We continue down the same path of throwing money at Mccandless and business.
I have said for years take the rest of the economic developement fund and hire 30 to 50 new police.Get veteran officers from other cities.Stop neighbors from our Rockwell towns from buying their drugs in our city.
How long can mayor Tyer not address the Pittsfield Gang war.Why wont the mayor along with the city council fight this war on heroin.Where is Marchetti, and Bouvier .These people are not capable and should resign.
Wake up,people dont want their kids educated here because of the Gang War.Pittsfield Ma. Is ground zero in Gangster town.Yes Mayor Tyer leads a gangster city,President Marchetti of Gangster city……Jobs wont come here and Our leaders think they are coming.

Bouvier is a bag of hot air. Her only accomplishment is getting the illegal aliens the right to get a drives license (added voter base).

How about doing something business friendly. You know something to bring an actual employer to our area with real jobs..

Police and the court system are only part of the resolution. Employment is another that is just important. No business want to

Very soon the Berkshire Eagle will be coming out with their list of candidates we should all vote for in the upcoming election It will be released as soon as they receive it from the special interests who really run the city.

History shows us that the candidates pushed by local printed media often come with overlying self serve interests which are not always the best thing for ordinary citizenry. Good luck with voting in Pittsfield because there is are big special interest unions voting against the common man.

Do not ignore referendum questions as they are the ones you actually have a chance of effecting.

Can anyone imagine the level of outrage by liberals if President Trump responded to a tragedy by going on Facebook to address a tragedy rather than appearing in public? The mayor needed to make a public statement in person about this tragedy. She did the same thing during a previous tragedy in the city and was criticized and now she has done the same thing again. It’s obvious she has no intention of running for a second term as mayor.

Stop watching Joe and Mika every morning. All they do is put down Trump. They had a love fest over Obama. Everything Obama did was beautiful and wonderful according to all of the liberal media during his 8 years. Obama could do nothing wrong even though we know he did.

Right Pat. As far as I know Obama never even offered paper towels to anyone even if they spilled salad dressing on their new dress pants. I agree with you that the paper towel tossing shows Trump is a much better president than Obama could ever hope to be. And such accuracy. Didja see him land one right in the arms of that bedraggled woman half way down the the right side? He pinpointed it right through the outstretched hands of a greedy 7 foot man who had already taken one off the table and was trying to get another. MAGA

When Priests began molesting children years ago, my outlook towards the Catholic Church change dramatically, today I try to be the best person I can towards other people, it is very hard sometimes because of the nonsense out there. Two things in life that are principles and have great meaning. Money is the root of all evil, without your health you have nothing. It is terrible when one has to live in fear, for some it is next to impossible, thus all the goings on in this Country, people turn to drugs and crime and many die because of it, it’s a damn piss poor quality of life, but that’s the reality of it. Trump represents a bad image and panders to the chip on the shoulder crowd, with his rhetoric. We are a Democracy, the United States has always led the way, shown the way of what Freedom can be and how we should make all Countries the same model and principle as our founding fathers laid out, for us. The mentality of this administration is everyone for themselves, especially now,we have become a devisive nation.

Yes Cosbies,
The sad reality also is, there is absolutely no moral code for young people to learn from, or emulate.
The adults, in life, leaders, etc, have turned so greedy, so corrupt, self-indulging, this Country is rotting from the top down.
People are struggling, while the rich keep taking.
This is what the youngsters are learning. Evil is the rotten core.

Anyone else wonder how ‘non-partisan” any of the Iberkshires coverage is since Andy Mckeever’s sister is a regsitered nurse (seen in many photos!) and he clearly tailors to the big D (in more ways than one probably) and the unions. He’s a hack and has been since high school

I hate to break it to you but the whole Gang War rationalization for increased crime and violence in Pittsfield is an overly dramatized cop out. You have groups of people who associate together, who do not like other groups. But this isn’t LA or Miami. Yes, a “gang mentality” (violence, disdain for authority, etc.) factors in. But Pittsfield is not in the midst of a gang war.

The violence is due to the shift in the mindset of how to approach conflict. Beefs aren’t settled through fist fights anymore. The standard approach has become to shoot first. I don’t like you? I’m going to shoot you.

The lethal shooting over the weekend was the result of a conflict between two women, not involving the victim. The conflict was accelerated and settled with gunshots exchanged. The victim was a causality of the increasingly casual attitude toward gun violence.

And I hate the looping of the gunfire. What is the point of playing it 500 times? We get it already.

Actually, I very much do know what is going on in these streets.

But I disagree here: “Hundreds” of kids in Pittsfield do not go to bed every right hearing gunfire.

I do agree the number of overdoses is alarming. But they are not the result of a gang war. Pittsfield has been plagued by drug use since the introduction of crack cocaine in the late 1980’s. Police have spent decades criminalizing drug use in the forms of arrests, raids, seizures, and incarceration. To no avail.

The number of overdoses locally is a reflection of a nationwide epidemic that began when the pharmaceutical and medical industries teamed up to promote patients’ rights to battle pain. While the poppy growing Middle East was being further destabilized by the Iraq war, the US was creating a population dependent on opioids. OxyContin anyone? But it was an acceptable dependency, medically prescribed, not a rob-your-mother junkie addiction. Until the prescriptions ran out…

New Letter:
City officials, police play strike politics
Posted Wednesday, October 4, 2017 4:57 pm

To the editor:

I find it ironic that on the front page of Wednesday’s Berkshire Eagle about the BMC nurse’s strike, the mayor and the city’s police department expressed concern about public safety because of the striking BMC nursing staff.

Mayor Tyer’s spokeswoman stated, “The role of the city is to provide safety.” Police Lt. Gary Traversa said he expected a round-the-clock presence for the 24-hour strike and said the police have contingency plans in place in the event of a civil disturbance. “It definitely puts some stress on personnel,” he said.

These statements were published on the same day The Eagle also informs us, sadly, of yet another loss of life from a shooting (“Woman dies after Dewey Avenue shooting”). Are the city administration and police playing politics? Or are they truly afraid of a gathering of caring professional health care workers exercising their right to strike?

I would rather our police force “be stressed” from combating the shootings and violence in our city and protecting our nurses who are striking in the “combat zone.”
