PUTIN NAILS IT IN TAKE ON THE FAILURE OF ‘LIBERALISM’

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION JULY 5-7, 2019) — Russian president Vladimir Putin, the best politician on the planet (to say nothing of THE PLANET), showed why again at the G-20, sharing his analysis for the fate of liberalism in the west. From there, he made a state visit to Italy and the Vatican city-state. The schedule was tiring, but he wasn’t too pooped to Pope.

At G-20, Putin referenced the current form of liberalism masquerading as “progressivism.” The old fashioned liberal idea, embodied by The Founding Fathers and Europe’s Enlightenment, celebrated the freedom of the individual, embracing at the same time the responsibilities that freedom entailed. Today’s progressives stand for the opposite. They want Big Brother Government to be The People’s Daddy from cradle to grave. The individual matters not. The collective is all. No wonder millennials and younger love socialism — or what they think is socialism.

This is the sort Putin had in mind when he shared his brilliant analysis of the progressive’s fate.

“The liberal idea has started eating itself,” Putin said. “Millions of people live their lives, and those who propagate those ideas are separate from them.”

In that one thought, Putin nailed it, the peculiar drift of progressives to the left of left. It inevitably produces not representatives but repressives — people elected to office Who Know Better Than You. They live apart from you. They vote themselves pay raises and benefits denied others. They ignore you except for every two or four years, when you become temporarily “important” on the ever-more remote possibility that you will cast a vote. After Election Day, they crumple you up like a spent candy wrapper. You live in the trash for the next few years.

In cut-off back waters such as Pittsfield and Berkshire County, that disenchantment with progressivism has taken hold among the people, but it hasn’t translated to the ballot box because citizens have been beat up and beat down. Those who do pay attention see a county seat governed by irresponsible spending.

Putin also had it right on immigration, saying that a nation’s borders must mean something.

“People live in their own country according to their own traditions. Why should [reckless immigration and open borders] happen to them?”

Food for thought this weekend. Have a great one, everybody.

Progressivism also started in Berkshire County long before it reached other areas of the country so we have suffered under it for such a long time. The Berkshire Eagle’s reputation as a far left liberal propaganda machine began during the early years of this area going down the Progressive rabbit hole and the newspaper was mocked across the country. Now we see how it has spread across the country and to the national media. Soon the whole country will have Pittsfield style politics especially if another far left Progressive becomes president in 2020.

Unchecked immigration does destroy the identity of a country and that’s why the far left supports it and is more concerned with it than with many other issues. They want to change the identity of our country from freedom loving Americans to people who are comfortable being dependent on big daddy government.

What better way to do that than to entice people to come here with promises of free healthcare, basic income, and free college? Right from the start that encourages people to come to this country knowing they would be dependent on big government.

Putin is right Dan V. that we should be careful of unchecked immigration because it would destroy the identity of a country, but that is what the Democrats want to do which is why they are OK with it.

It is so appropriate on Independence Day weekend that the “conservatives” among us, you know, those who brought us Joe McCarthy, the Domino Theory of fighting communism and the Reds Under the Bed, are now taking their lessons on governing from the power mad, super rich through deep corruption, ultra violent and totally dismissive of the peoples’ needs Putin. Develop a single compassionate bone in your collective bodies people, then we can discuss liberalism. Wow Dan…Thanks. Your rather stark projections are, I fear, accurate. I appreciate that you concede that Trump has already “gone authoritarian.” He most assuredly has. But I’m not sure I agree yet with your pronouncement that “society los(t) its ability to control the democratic process.” I think both parties certainly feel that way, but I think the people, at least for now, still get a say and I am optimistic that we can, progressive and conservative alike, sit down and agree that we agree on 90-95% of everything. The rest is politics.

Our Founding Fathers owned slaves. They wanted Liberty, but they owned slaves. Russia’s Stalin killed twice as many people that Germany’s Hitler. Russia’s Putin rules by FEAR! Trump is a demagogue, and he has divided the people instead of uniting us. Trump and Putin are friends.

But, according to Dan Valenti, it is all the fault of the progressives who are “far left” on the political issues.

You know – I’m not sure about that reasoning. Thomas Jefferson had made incredibly insightful comments on how disgraceful slavery was to any standard of Christian humanity. We have slavery now – it’s wage slavery in the Berkshires where employers pay minimum wage and avoid benefits so they can have planes and second homes and put their little spawn in private school because the school unions will never improve public schools.. Workers can’t afford summer childcare so they talk about the lawless kids running frees in the parks. And the useless pos state senator thinks the Flyer is what this town needs. Putin is a vile pure capitalism barbarian. Let’s emulate him as America becomes a failed plutocracy, we are almost there now.

I respect Dan Valenti’s opinions on classical liberty. However, I can’t understand how the Founding Fathers argued, fought for, and wanted Liberty, when at the same time, they owned slaves.

How do you think capitalism began? It began through the system of slavery. The colonies were business entities. The businessmen didn’t want to pay taxes to England anymore. Massachusetts went bankrupt prior to the Revolutionary War. They wanted England to bail them out financially. England declined, but still wanted taxes from a bankrupt colony. The people of Massachusetts revolted against King George III. The people of Massachusetts felt that if they had their own government, then Massachusetts wouldn’t be bankrupt because England caused their plight through taxation without representation. The other colonies joined with Massachusetts, and the Founding Father’s ended up borrowing the money they needed from France to finance the war.

George Washington won the Revolutionary War. He was also the largest property and slave owner in the 13 colonies. Washington served as our nation’s first U.S. President, and he moved the U.S. Capital to the South in a swamp in Virginia. Of course, slavery continued through the end of the Civil War.

The U.S.A. was founded on both Liberty and Slavery, which is difficult for me to understand!

Rhode Island, of course, was among the most active Northern colonies in importing slaves. Between 1709 and 1807, Rhode Island merchants sponsored at least 934 slaving voyages to the coast of Africa and carried an estimated 106,544 slaves to the New World. From 1732-64, Rhode Islanders sent annually 18 ships, bearing 1,800 hogsheads of rum, to Africa to trade for slaves, earning £40,000 annually. Newport, the colony’s leading slave port, took an estimated 59,070 slaves to America before the Revolution. Bristol and Providence also prospered from it. In the years after the Revolution, Rhode Island merchants controlled between 60 and 90 percent of the American trade in African slaves.

As a Rhode Island historian writes, “All together, 204 different Rhode Island citizens owned a share or more in a slave voyage at one time or another. It is evident that the involvement of R.I. citizens in the slave trade was widespread and abundant. For Rhode Islanders, slavery had provided a major new profit sector and an engine for trade in the West Indies.” Slaves that were not auctioned off were put to work aboard merchant ships. By 1807, black seamen made up 21% of Newport crews.

The Browns, one of the great mercantile families of colonial America, were Rhode Island slave traders. At least six of them — James and his brother Obadiah, and James’s four sons, Nicholas, John, Joseph, and Moses — ran one of the biggest slave-trading businesses in New England, and for more than half a century the family reaped huge profits from the slave trade. “When James Brown sent the Mary to Africa in 1736, he launched Providence into the Negro traffic and laid the foundation for the Brown fortune. From this year until 1790, the Browns played a commanding role in the New England slave trade.”[1] Their donations to Rhode Island College were so generous that the name was changed to Brown University.

Rhode Island’s government jealously protected its slaves. The runaway law of 1714 penalized ferrymen who carried any slave out of the colony without a certificate from their masters. Such laws existed in neighboring colonies, but Rhode Island’s was particularly severe in its penalties, and in the zeal with which the machinery of state was put to work in recovering human property, which was reminiscent of the hated Fugitive Slave Law of a later day. “The intrenched position of the slaveholders is clearly seen in this law, for all public officers of the colony and all citizens as well were charged with arresting, securing the slave, and notifying his master.”[2]

The law against thefts by slaves in Rhode Island was, again, the severest in New England, carrying a sentence that could be 15 lashes or even banishment from the colony — a particularly dreaded punishment, as it usually meant deportation and sale to the merciless sugar plantations of the West Indies. Masters had the right to search any ship they suspected of harboring a runaway, under a 1757 law.

As in other New England colonies with many slaves, masters had to be prevented by law from turning out their old and feeble slaves. Rhode Island’s 1729 ordinance required a master to post bond of £100 before manumission, to insure the ex-slave would not become a public charge.

EMANCIPATION

During the Revolution, Quaker abolitionists and the powerful Newport shipping interest clashed over slavery. In February 1784 the Legislature passed a compromise measure for gradual emancipation. All children of slaves born after March 1 were to be “apprentices,” the girls to become free at 18, the boys at 21. As with other Northern instances of gradual emancipation, this gave slaveowners many years of service to recoup the cost of raising the children.

No slaves were emancipated outright. The 1800 census listed 384 slaves, and the number fell gradually to 5 in 1840, after which slaves were no longer counted in the censuses for the state. And, in an essential element of the 1784 compromise, the right of Rhode Island ship-owners to participate in the foreign slave trade was undisturbed.

Legislation against slave-trading proved difficult to enforce in Rhode Island. John Brown, a merchant, state representative, and powerful slaveholder, was tried in 1796 for violating the federal Slave Trade Act of 1794, which prohibited ships destined to transport slaves to any foreign country from outfitting in American ports. He was found not guilty. The acquittal convinced many that the new legislation was useless against the wealthy and powerful. A year later, he saw his ship, the “Hope,” confiscated for violations.

As was the case throughout the North, Rhode Island, having ended slavery, also sought to make it difficult for blacks to remain in the state or move there. In the early 19th century, Rhode Island towns especially turned to the old New England custom of “warning out” strangers to purify themselves racially. The custom continued to have as a stated goal the removal of poor and undesirable strangers from a community. But blacks were increasingly its targets, out of proportion to their numbers and without regard to whether they were long-term residents or not.

A study of Rhode Island records showed that only 5 percent of the transients warned out in the 1750s were identifiable as black. This rose sharply after the end of slavery, however. The figure was up to 22 percent by the 1790s, and 50 percent by 1800. Providence, after 1785, apparently made wholesale evictions of blacks who were deemed “liable to become chargeable.” Yet of the records examined between 1782 and 1800, some 37 percent had been in the town five years or longer, and 26 percent had been there for 10 years or longer. Reports of the city’s overseers of the poor from the early 19th century show no great disproportionate burden on taxpayers for care of indigent blacks.

Might be helpful if the Eagle would report the whole story including the number of overdoses and deaths just in Pittsfield on a weekly basis. It is possible this could serve as a recurring reminder and warning of the dangers of the drug. I would imagine that everyone who knows these numbers would admit the problem is out of control.

Sadly it seems that some city officials want to hide the severity of the problem in order to protect the city image. And in doing so probably contribute to the high number of overdoses. And that is just so sad.

Obviously liberalism must be cannibalistic, look at our present criminal justice system which is designed to maximize the elitist involveds income. Much like The Democrats took minority fathers out of the family unit, the probate courts in America are now practicing the predatory behavior on any family not aware of the gamesmanship. Resulting in more victims to be exploited by the criminal justice system increased more by Clinton than any president in history. Trump is first president to make substantial efforts in rehabilitation instead of incarceration.
50% of reason ms Harrington was elected is our present system is broken. Putin is just repeating what America has been saying for years, to cause further tension. Putin could beat Bobby fisher in chess, his firesight is his only strength.

The fact that this is allowed to go on means the editors of the paper just don’t care, that they lack any semblance of integrity.

Anytime you want to check an article, just copy a portion of it, paste it into google. If that text exists elsewhere, it will often pull it up.

In doing that with some of Haven Orecchio-Egresitz articles the text is often the same as other writers. That can happen up to a point but not to the level of what I’ve been seeing. Also she’s not the first to file so there can be no excuse about others copying her.
As to errors, just recently she filed a story on a near drowning in Pittsfield. Pittsfield fire department, as far as I know, doesn’t have paramedics. So how did a PFD paramedic save the drowning mans life?

Journalism left the Left Winged Parrot with the Miller family. 199?

My cat won’t use her box with fresh litter lined with that propaganda.

I had hoped Rutburg, being an impartial Judge, had a semblance of integrity and would turn the ship around.

He’s farther LEFT than Ocasio-Cortez!!!!

It’s truly said when the only unbiased news is the Planet.

Why can’t our paper investigate if DA Rollins’ bosom buddy Harrington is also making good on her promises for “progressive prosecution?” Doesn’t the public have a right to know what is happening in our district court? How many cases have been dropped, # of pleas to a lesser charge, how many dismissed drug cases? What about dropped domestic assault charges? Come to think of it, wasn’t she offering to provide transparency?
Stopping injustice or putting the public at risk? Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins’s tactics spur pushback https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/07/06/stopping-injustice-putting-public-risk-suffolk-rachael-rollins-tactics-spur-pushback/IFC6Rp4tVHiVhOf2t97bFI/story.html

File a FOIA and the DA witch will have to comply.

Tyer, school committee/superintendant, and city council need a few of those also.

If they give you crap, contact Judicial Watch.

The problem with Harrington, she’s too stupid to actually know what a good idea is. She just copied the “never been to court, progressive DA playbook” and really wasn’t even sure of the words she was reading.
Being soft on drug use will eventually lead to both drug deaths and deaths of innocent people caught in the crossfire or mowed down by someone driving under the influence.
Harrington and those like her are just quicken the pace of the slide into oblivion of the Berkshires.

As long as they are not Fox news “journalists” (if that is really a thing) it is probably OK with Pat. But they better not mess with cult chanters Limbaugh, Hannity and O’Reilly. that would cross a line even with Trumps Russia collaborate.

Trey Gowdy or Whitaker be a likely prosecutor,New England needs a good house cleaning.
Pence skipped NH visit as nh AG dropped case against Project Veritas pertaining to google censorship
and will visit when full story of accident that killed 7 is known.

Sessions got fired because he was stonewalling many cases epstein’s is just one of them.

Look for many Massachusetts political prosecutions,Barr is confused as to why no racketeering charges in MSP scandals.
As is the federal judge that rejected guilty plea, like Epstein case he thought was broomed , it’s not over till attorney General Barr says it’s over. Question is does Alex Acosta make the week?
Barr requested documents Alex had sealed open,& got them last week. If Alex had the information why didn’t he prosecute?
It’s been to long without a “ your fired” from trump!!
