MARCHETTI SHOULD NOT SEEK RECOUNT BUT BREAULT SHOULD … DID THE POUNDS KEEP PETER FROM THE CORNER OFFICE? … KINNAS WIN ON SCHOOL BOARD THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FOR TAXPAYERS
By DAN VALENTI
PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY, NOV. 10, 2011) — With everyone trying to gleam cosmic significance over tomorrow’s date of 11/11/11, THE PLANET finds soul in everything we see, touch, hear. In short, the transcendent is where you find it. Even in elections, you find people caught in the act of being themselves.
RECOUNT DRACULA — Peter Marchetti lost to Dan Bianchi by 100 or so votes. He should not seek a recount. Bianchi lost to Jimmy Ruberto two years ago by 200 votes and got a recount as he should have done. What’s the difference? This year, the 100-vote differential can be found scattered throughout the city’s wards and precincts. Two years ago, the 200-vote difference came from one ward. Bianchi won everything else and got overwhelmed in 4, in such proportions that the distribution of votes appeared odd. There were rumors of funny stuff going in on 4, prompting the recount. The second tally in 4, however, did not uncover anything unusual, and only three votes (or thereabouts) were changed. There’s no way Marchetti finds 100 votes in a recount. The stake is through his heart, and the Count will not come back until at least 2013. His best bet is to continue the gracious and classy exit out the door and into his six weeks as a lame-duck councilor at -large.
SPEAKING OF AT-LARGE — No one else will dare bring this up, but since it was a topic throughout this campaign in various quarters and circles, THE PLANET “dares to go there.” Did Peter Marchetti lose because he is overweight? Many remarked on the extra pounds Marchetti put on going into this campaign season. He looked as if he had sought lots of comfort in food along the Big Macs line rather than fresh veggies. Marchetti looked fat, jowly, and bloated, like the caricatured image of the greedy, overweight pol getting rich by taking food off the starving taxpayers’ tables. That’s not the man, but if it’s the image of the man — these days, where dumbing down has become a high art, that’s enough. Bianchi, on the other hand, appeared trim and at his fighting weight. Let THE PLANET be clear. We would never and have never cast a vote on the such a superficial basis, but some people do. We doubt there were 100 votes to be lost in the Spare Tire, but surely a few. Any truth to this theory? We don’t know, but it’s certainly food for thought.
LET’S ALSO BE CLEAR ABOUT THIS: PETER MARCHETTI HANDLED DEFEAT WITH CLASS, GRACIOUSNESS, AND DIGNITY. We hope he comes back in 2013 but only if his heart wants it. If he doesn’t, he should enjoy his life to the fullest. He is a warm, caring man. Yes, he is a friend at this address. No. We don’t enjoy having to walk the tightrope on covering people we know professionally and personally. We wish Peter all the best in the world, and say this with heartfelt sincerity.
BREAULT MUST DEMAND A RECOUNT IN WARD 5 — Joe Breault came within six votes of a win in Ward 5 over incumbent Jonathan Lothrop. A straight recount of votes could easily tip three from J-Lo’s tally and move them to Joe. That produces a tie ball game. Then you have the so-called “blank” votes. There are as many as 84 of them, we hear. People have been asking how a voter could vote in a ward and then not make a selection. That’s not what happened. The “blanks” are only that way because machines are stupid. You see, almost all (if not all) of the “blanks” actually have a preference for a candidate indicated, but instead of filling in the bubble, people make some other mark, most of them circling one of the two names. Those votes should be in play because they clearly indicate the voter’s intent. We cannot let a machine’s inability to read a vote not indicated to its satisfaction determine the outcome of an election. We must let the human element overrule the machine. All votes that clearly indicate a voter’s choice must be counted.
KINNAS WIN MAKES SCHOOL COMMITTEE HIS KIN — Citizen watchdog Terry Kinnas won perhaps the most significant victory on Tuesday night. His narrow win over Jon King for the final spot on the six-member school committee promises to at minimum change the culture on that historically underperforming, under-scrutinized board. Kinnas will bring We The People to the dais with him to each meeting. Kinnas is now political kin to the five other members plus mayor-elect Bianchi. With Kinnas, transparency will rule the day in a way it rarely if ever has for an invisible board that controls 2/3 of the city $130 million budget. That staggering amount requires staggering oversight and scrutiny, and with Kinnas, the taxpayers at least have a shot that questions will be asked and answers demanded. Why does THE PLANET have a feeling that the school committee’s first meeting next year will be the hottest ticket in town? THE PLANET also congratulates King for his reasoning in not seeking a recount in a 20-something-vote loss: He said he didn’t want to put the city through it. With that statement, we say King deserved a seat … at the expense of any of the others not named “Kinnas.”

WE GOTTA GO, ME OH MY-OH. TOMORROW, WE PRESENT ANALYSIS OF TUESDAY NIGHT FROM THE PLANET’S POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT, JOSH CUTLER. AND BE PATIENT, THOSE WAITING FOR OUR CHOOL REPORTS. IT’S COMING …
“OPEN THE WINDOW, AUNT MILLIE.”
Did anyone show Morandi how to find the city council chambers?
Not knowing would be a plus for the people if you think about it.
For Leona and ‘Kevin’, fairly nasty comments – both. I hope your real characters are not revealed by your tone.
I’ve met Mr. Morandi a number of times and my impression is that he is going into office with a good spirit and open door to his constituents. I do not get the impression that he is going to pander to established interests.
I agree. Mr. Morandi came to my door in the campaign in 2 and asked for my vote. Mr. White has never done that. I found Mr. Morandi to be sincere, and wanting to do a good job. I agree with Levitan that he will not be a gob yes man. Thats not what we want or need especially in ward 2 where weve had it for the past two years
I was hoping for Terry to make it on the School Committee BUT now the big question is this, Will Terry Kinnas, who does his homework and comes better prepared than most if not all, find a way to effectively communicate his point in a way that it builds consensus and makes a difference or will he just piss everyone off by coming off as a know it all who is lecturing the ignorant masses? Here’s hoping for the first scenario mentioned, by which, Terry must either learn or display political and tactical dexterity that he is not known for nor has he shown in the past. Not saying he needs to play nice and be fake but rather, just display tact and eliminate arrogance so that people can see his many accurate facts..Good luck TK
Terry Kinnas’s election proved only one thing. There are some 4800 people in Pittsfield who have never met him, Good luck folks, we’ve goy a pretty good school superintendent. He won’t stay around too much longer. Any mispellings her DV?
Mr. Kinnas’s election also proved that there are people that felt as if they either didnt have a seat at the table or that they were under represented. We may have a pretty good school superintendent but based upon what criteria? If I read your comments correctly you fear he will depart because Mr. Kinnas will be asking questions and demanding accountability? if thats so it flys in the face of your comment that we have a good superintendent. it would indicate that he is weak and cant defend his position.
I still figure that Pete lost just enough votes because of his stupendous mistake of saying that the recent string of robberies were done by people just trying to feed their families.
This just plain crazy statement also gave a glimpse into his far-left liberal mind. Or as he calls himself, “Progrssive”.
Thank goodness he is out of office.
SW I say Marchetti lost because he is gay. You know that more than 100 voters voted against him only because he is married to a man!
Some lose votes because they are shorter than their opponents. And others lose votes because they are too lanky.
How unfair is that?
If you know that he lost 100 votes because he is married to a man, please tell us how many votes he got because he is married to a man as well. But more importantly since you know the way everyone voted please tell us how many votes he both garnered and lost due to his ties to the GOB’s? How many votes did he get because of his involvement with the parade?
Steve the point is you nor does anyone else “know” how or why anyone else votes, the prism that your looking through is tainted with your own thoughts and beliefs based upon your experiences that’s all.
You may surmise how people voted and I will concur a percentage of people factored in his sexual orientation, however I contend it went both ways (no pun intended ).
The discussion now needs to be centered around how do we the people harness and control the power structure to ensure this administration and council truly work on behalf of us and not the favored few.
Love it hate it or deny its power the planet here is giving us the forum to express our views to the elected officials and I for one appreciate it and plan on using it as well.
I don’t understand why in this last election some of the supporters for mayor gave a list of how someone volunteers to do good things in the community for different programs and this somehow should make them qualified to be mayor. While it is a good thing they do it should not make people think that those things entitle them to be mayor.
Have to say Ive been wondering the same about Peter Ms remark about crime. Taht was a dazzler that the robberies were done by good citizens who needed to feed their families. that alone had to cost him 100 votes
Dan, doesn’t PM live in 2B? If that’s right, I think a 95 vote difference can be found within his own ward and precinct. Given most other wards were a draw, it would seem a little odd (to me anyway) that the swing was on his own turf. With that, I really don’t see how Bianchi’s justified but PM isn’t.
@CONCERNED did you mean STATE PEN yesterday?
PM lives in 1A/2A border by morningside. 2B is heavy Bianchi supporters.
@ Curious PM lives at 27 Courtland Place, which is in ward 1. A 100 votes is pretty hard to make up to make a difference.
I find it rather scary that this mayoral race was even close. Pete just does not have the goods to be mayor and it showed big time every time he opened his mouth. But somehow he got 6000 votes?
Even though Bianchi won (thank god) I think there should be an investigation into the process. Something really weird happened the other day it has to do with more than slate cards.
Yes, I am a pessimist.
DUSTY
Peter has shown in the past that he can draw votes. He has been, for instance, the top vote getter in the at-large race, more than once. Second, as much as he is tied to Mayor Ruberto in public perception, the fact that he is a different man. I was surprised by the narrow margin of victory, initially, but after the fact, when we are all omniscient, it seemed well within the bounds. He’s a household name, popular in certain pockets of the city, had an organization, and had decent finances. That can win a lot of votes.
Payroll Patriot: That’s were he belongs, instead he is behind the scenes in a Mayor’s race!!!!! What is wrong with this picture. Wow
@Hilly Billy 2…. on the Hilly….just seen a truck said Hillybilly on it, way to cool!
Some of our greatest politicians were phat….Boss Tweed, Hughey ‘Kingfish’ Long, Teddy Bruschi, Albert Haynesworth…you get the picture. Anyway, we like Pete. A couple jogs around the block he’ll be back to his banking weight.
@beezer: Teddy Bruschi is cool(phat); those other 3 would fit in with Bill Clinton. Actually Huey Long could be related to Clinton, if you know what I mean. Only one state over. Haynesworth is too big and fast and only wanted to work when he felt like it.
Is his banking weigh worth it in gold?
Dan, I have to say you are a bit of a hypocrite. I know your statement about “keeping it above board,” was partially directed at me because of my statements about that brownie-hound John Krol. John Krol makes me about as sick to my stomach as Spurs Speranzo does yours. Just because that a**-kissing, brown nosing, bobblehead (aka-John Krol) calls you, writes you, texts you, or writes you love letters, don’t silence the rest of us on our feelings. I seem to remember your chili-drenched, Lauded-lard story (though funny and true), it was about a low blow as my rant about Krol. As Dennis Miller used to say, “that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.”
Krol came to Mazzeo’s Tuesday night and was talking crap about some people and got straightened out very quickly by a couple of people, one in particular. He, Lothrop and Sakshaug were in the group mouthing off and were made aware that it wasn’t a very smart thing to do at that place at that time. He is a dumbass.
That is an absolutely false assertion. I arrived with JLo; Krol arrived simultaneously. I went to congratulate Tony, who accepted but then went off on JLo and Krol about showing respect for Melissa. Neither JLo nor Krol, nor Barry a little later, “mouthed off” at any time. They listened to Tony’s point of view and managed to get in only a few calm words. Tony was saying nothing about this to me. The others heard Tony out. I stayed for the whole thing but stood a few steps back. Later Tony bought us all a beer. Nobody was “mouthing off”. You are just plain wrong here. All of us were there to congratulate Dan on his victory, and neither I nor the councilors-elect you mention are so ignorant as to “mouth off” at someone else’s celebration.
Cappy should go after the council presidency. It would give him the excuse he needs for not participating in any of the discussions.
LOL!
Dan, you are right about P.M.’s wieght!! He also dressed very sloppy compared to Mayor elect Bianchi. P.M. always looked like he was waiting for a flood. I used to be in charge of hiring people and would always hire the person who was neat and clean. I’m amazed he got as many votes as he did.
Dan if someone is so incompetent that they cannot fill out a ballot correctly ther vote should be void.
Dan,
Im really starting to hate the fact that you are starting to attack someones personal life and how they look or weigh. if you are going to describe why someone shouldnt be mayor then stick to the reasons that matter like the voting record of the person. Don’t say things about their lifestyles or what they look like or even a persons weight. that has nothing to do with the persons ability to do the job, Im hoping you will some day grow up…Not physically but mentally because you are acting like a really immature moron who has nothing better to do with their time except try to spread rumors about people who are trying to make this place that you do not live a better one…why dont you go play in the sandbox by yourself because its obvious you have no friends
@HD, I saw no attack in Dan’s writing. Not sure how you are interpreting it as such. I suggest you go back and read it more thoroughly. He is surmising that appearances do matter to some people when they vote, that is all. And he is correct. Otherwise, how could anyone have voted for Dan Quayle?
Whoa! I really didn’t take it this way. To me, he was merely stating that, unfortunately, some people DO consider something like weight when they vote. He didn’t condone it, he was just stating a truly unfortunate fact. He also stated that he may have gotten another 100 votes — 100 out of the 12,000 who voted tells me that thankfully, it’s a minority of people who think this way, but perhaps it was enough to make up the difference of the ~100 vote gap and perhaps this cost him the election.
Please take a deep breath, calm down and re-read what was said.
Hearse driver, if you’re going to be that stupid, when you have already buried yourself. No one is taking you seriously @ Molly and Kraken, you hit the nail on the head. There is no attack here just a valid observation taht some make decisions baesd on appearance.
@ Nomad, I was thinking the same thing. Could carry on the Tom Hickey tradition.
Let’s look at the makeup of this new Council shall we… Kevin Sherman seems to me to be the obvious President. Respected, independent, intelligent and won’t put up with BS… You got Melissa Maz, who is always gonna come prepared and ready to do battle on behalf of the people. Tony Simonelli, I see as being level headed and thoughtful, who isn’t gonna be manipulated by anyone and won’t be afraid to speak his mind, but will have a learning curve. Church Cotton, I see in the same mold as Tony S, well thought out and reasonable, with a little less of a learning curve, having been on School Commitee for so many years..
And then….ya got the rest of them…J Lo, if he gets in, will surely have his arrogant smile and try to push Sherman for Pres….Ken Doll Kroll, will be bringing his well coifed hairdo, cuff links and smug attitude back because no one ran against him and is sure to throw monkey wrenches towards the corner office…. CPA Barry, another Ruberto holdover, who will surely be marching to the same drum beat as his new best buddy J Krol. Cappy, who seems to have won in convincing fashion, but I’m not sure if its because of his politics or pizzas…Christine Yon?? need I say more….THen the other 2 newcomers…Questionable Chris Connell, who will dash into meetings after fixing toilets on his many questionable countywide slu… uh, I mean , tenements and last and certainly least, Kevin Morandi, who although likeable enough, and can probably give you a good haircut, lets just hope he has his GPS working so he can find Council Chambers…Should be an interesting 2 years for the City of Pittsfield and its new mayor elect Dan Bianchi…
Nomad wins the cookie!
@ Beezer…thanks..that is way cool….
Peter M. Its taking you this long to decide on recount. Come on its either you do or don’t!!!!!! I believe you know you will so announce it. I don’t trust this delay, hope someone is watching them ballots. Maybe Dan or Ron Kitterman can answer this : Can anyone fool around with them while they just sit there?????
Concerned Check your phones I think they are tapped! Remember Big Brother is listening….
Wade you’re an idiot. I’m surprised you’re still around this site. Dan has the patience of a saint.
Hey Guitar head I just think its such a joke that people see conspiracy around every corner. So I don’t agree with Valenti everytime so I should be bounced? I like to mess with people and Dan doesnt?
Steve do you live in Lanesborough on Balance rock road?
Your point !!!!!!!
And this is surprising to you?
Steve. I have a cell phone so I’m sure someone is listening. However what I say on it Big Brother would be bored. You think nothing can happening to the votes I take it. I’m looking for someone with knowledge that tell me that, that’s why I asked Dan V and Ron Kitterman.
The fact Marchetti is taking this long to make the recount decision confirms my belief he was not a good choice for mayor. Or is this delay because the GOB’s are scheming in secret once again? And yes, any voting machine can be hacked into to change the numbers. Time will tell.
Kraken – great point – the guy can’t even decide to recount or not – how long does it take him to answer the questions, “Do you wan’t that supersized….”
I don’t think Marchetti’s weight had anything to do with it – it was the GOB v. the rest of us peeps along for the ride. Bianchi was lucky to win and the recount won’t matter.
While Pete and his handlers are making up his mind I hope someone is keeping an eye on the voting machines.
hey dan are u upset your spy tony maffuccio didnt get elected? hes the only guy i know who cant keep his mouth shut about anything…if u tell him something within 5 seconds its in the newspapers
We sure didn’t need a Ruberto sychophant in the corner office. Yay for Dan Bianchi! BTW, what will Ruberto be up to now?
I’m certain one good turn deserves another, is it possible he will be vice Councilor to John Barrett up north?
Ohh an we nee to look at news elswhere… Did the Eagle report about Armitage? Don’t think so…
