PANTOMIME PAPER TOWELS: ARI’EL STACHEL LIVES THREE LIVES IN BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY / THE ARTS

WHAT: Out of Character, Berkshire Theatre Group, written and performed by Ariel Stachel

WHERE: The Unicorn Theater, Stockbridge, MA

WHEN: Through July 26

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION JULY 11-3, 2025) — Who are you?

That’s the question Ari’el Stachel confronts in this bravado, one-man launch into the non-negotiable inner regions of Identify and Self, those aching aspects of personhood most of us will not visit. Statchel, though, embarks on the quest, wrestling not with an angel but with himself in confessional spasms of pain, parody, puzzlement, and humorous self-deprecation. He laughs so as not to cry until the hysterics become cleansing tears.

To borrow from Lowell (“The Vision of Sir Launfal”), Stachel “builds a bridge from Dreamland for his lay.”

For me, the perilousness of one-person shows is that, unless it’s Hal Holbrook portraying Mark Twain–that is, a great actor portraying a great life–such productions can easily comes off as self-indulgent solipsism. Is there any other kind. I’ve seen too many that are “so what?”, where you want to ask, “So what the hell makes you think we give two spits.” One that comes to mind (no names or places) some guy droning for an hour-and-a-half talking about his reaction to 9/11. Boring.

Stachel, however, doesn’t portray a world-historical individual. Not Einstein, Twain, or Taylor Swift. He does one better. He plays him Self.

Lemons into Lemonade

In this uncommon, imposing play, Ari briskly peels back his layers of insecurity, debilitating anxiety, and panic attacks that manifest as OCD and uncontrollable torrents of facial sweat. Quite a handicap for an actor.

He metaphorically resembles a kid on a hot day with a lemonade stand, 10 cents a Dixie cup—but no one stops by. He’s alone with his product, and, having precious few options, begins to drink his own Kool-Aid. Yeah, he’s switched drinks from self loathing to self exploration. He mines the cliched dross to get at the private, idiosyncratic gold

You’d figure a young actor (age 34) would bet set after winning the 2018 Tony (“Best Featured Actor in a Musical” for The Band’s Visit) and going from anonymity in fruitless auditions to “in demand” for stage, movie, and TV roles.

You’d figure.

And you would be right.

And you would be wrong.

At the same time.

Born and raised in Berkeley, Calif., this sensitive, soulful, hybrid lad experienced shame and dread, to say nothing of rear and loathing, over his heritage. Was he Yemeni? Jewish? Arabic? Middle Eastern? White?American? All? None? Some? Stachel’s internal quest for authentic persona becomes the fuel stock for Statchel’s romp, equal parts cavort, caper, comedy, catastrophe, and cataclysm.

This 75-minute drink quenches the audience’s thirst, a polydipsia that springs from our vicarious need to hear from and learn about the secrets that others hide. Gossipers can relate. The liquid metaphors fit, because watching this staggeringly energetic performance feels like a shower. By the end, you have briefly joined Statchel in having come clean.

Black Magic

You are Ari’el. Your father, the son of Yemeni immigrants born and raised in Israel, and your mother, an Ashkenazi Jew from New York City, divorce in your childhood. You’re in 5th grade when Middle East terrorists go to work on Sept. 11, 2001. You could pass for magician David Blaine’s double. You look “too Arabic.” You get bullied and teased, so you shed your persona and “become” black. Naturally, you develop your hoop skills. You engage in a kind of “black magic” beyond the ability of most (ahem) “normal” folks, let alone Blaine.

Stachel alienates himself from his father, embarrassed by his patrimony, and aborts his birthright. He goes from “black” to posing as “white,” a discoloration confirmed when he visits Uganda. His black girlfriend confirms the alabaster delusion. Along the Great White Way, the actor looks to hide his pain by drowning himself in booze, drugs, and sex. Futile, of course.

Ari shares the reason for becoming an actor, a common tale for those who trod the boards, with each version new in the telling. Categorically, acting allows one to “play” other characters. Actors can safely hide from themselves, with social approval, and, for professionals, get paid for doing do.

The BTG press release boasts of the play’s “universality.” It’s a well chosen word. How many of us “play” a role as part of our public face, that outer layer of the three lives all of us live. Every hand should be raised to serve honesty. The first life we wear in public, those selfie smiles, those artificial projections required of us in the workplace, in culture, and in other shared spaces that require fake versions of ourselves.

The second life, our private one, we share only with intimates—family and friends who see more of who we are. The resultant familiarity often becomes a personal minefield in the manner of Stachel’s rejection of his father.

Finally, we come to the third life, our personal life. That’s the one we live when no one else is around. That remains hidden and sacred … it’s prayer, if we can define it as “what you do when you are alone.” Watching Out of Character led me to wonder how much of his personal afflictions still torment Statchel. It’s the one performance we shall never see.

Pantomime Paper Towels

Stachel, with the help of director Tony Taccone and Madelaine Oldham (dramaturg, sound designer), takes a stab at revealing all three of his lives. He begins with reliving his Tony Award, the apex of his career but one that induces a panic attack he tries to fight in the bathroom. Who cannot love the sound of those unseeable paper towels coming from an invisible dispenser as Stachel pulls out the pantomime sheets? Those paper towels remind me of the malignant layers of personality Ari has to courage to prod, poke, and peel.

For me, these invisible facewipes suggest the actor’s attempts to control the manifestations of his inner turmoil. Unfortunately, Rx-ing public symptoms can’t touch underlying personal causes. Mopping the brow of dripping perspiration cannot stop cold sweats to come.

Stachel’s private life comes to us primarily via his love-hate-love relationship with his father. After disowning his dad, Ari finally comes to terms with his lineage after finding award-winning success with the role of Haled in the Broadway smash hit The Band’s Visit. Haled, the ladies man of an Israeli police orchestra that’s come to Egypt for a performance, not only changes Stachel’s professional standing but transforms, over time, his inability to be himself.

To “be one’s Self,” of course, comes only after one finds one’s Self—or what’s a one-man play for?

THE PLANET’s rating (out of 5 stars): * * * * * (five stars!)

Folks, three words: GO SEE IT!

Have a great weekend, everybody.

Don’t criticize the Mayor “90-day Grace Period” Peter Marchetti and his supporters or else you may be asked to resign for objecting to his encampment ban proposal.

The Berkshire Eagle stated: “Witch Slapped owner Danielle Munn….was asked to resign from the board of Downtown Pittsfield Inc. following her July 1 [2025] Facebook post criticizing fellow DPI members for supporting Mayor Peter Marchetti’s proposed camping ordinance.”

O.K. Let’s follow that logic.

Peter Marchetti is named in a federal sex discrimination/harassment lawsuit whereby Victoria May alleges that he called her a BITCH when he was her bank manager prior to her termination of employment at the Pittsfield bank that Peter Marchetti worked at for 35 years.

Mayor Peter Marchetti oversaw the duplicative investigations of the alleged wrongdoings at Pittsfield High School (PHS) whereby taxpayers funded a $156,000 law firm to investigate the alleged wrongdoings at PHS that were previously investigated by Pittsfield. The law firm’s report is being held in secret from public disclosure. The allegations of wrongdoing at PHS were found to be unsustained by the law firm.

Mayor Peter Marchetti’s “War against the Underclass” anti-panhandling and anti-homeless proposals were voted down by the City Council over and over again. Danielle Munn was NOT the only citizen of Pittsfield to publicly criticize the Mayor and his supporters for his punitive proposals against the small city’s most vulnerable members.

By that logic, shouldn’t the supporters of Mayor Peter Marchetti be asking him to resign instead of Danielle Munn?

The truth is already speaking louder than any agenda item!

The pattern of retaliation is undeniable. We are looking at a collection of leaked documents, corroborating timelines, internal emails, text messages, council meeting footage, and personal letters. Add to that the unwarranted visits from law enforcement to intimidate Danielle Munn—and now her removal from the DPI Board of Directors before she ever attended a single meeting. That’s not coincidence. That’s strategy. Why would the Berkshire Eagle cover something like this if they didn’t know there was something bigger underneath?

Two board members have privately confirmed what many suspected: DPI’s bylaws are routinely ignored. Punishment is selective and politically motivated. Evan Valenti reportedly served on the board last year and didn’t attend a single meeting—no repercussions. Mike Dell’Aquila from Hot Plate has faced serious accusations of abusive behavior towards members and volunteers, yet DPI continues to promote his business, giving them high visibility at every major event and block party. Meanwhile, Steven Valenti allegedly hasn’t paid dues in years. Large sponsors like Allegrone and Scarafoni often require persistent chasing just to honor their financial commitments of sponsorship.

But the most revealing detail? Witch Slapped is the only small, privately-owned retail business represented on a board otherwise dominated by property developers, banks, museums, and county institutions. Danielle’s track record as a fierce advocate for the marginalized was no secret. DPI knew who they were inviting to the table. So why remove her now?

Because she spoke the truth—in a room full of people who didn’t want to hear it. She stated clearly that she would not support businesses prioritizing profits over human lives. She challenged a status quo that protects money and power, not people. That’s why she was targeted.

Watch the public footage of Lee Bank’s Chuck Leach at the ordinance meeting. The message was clear: profit over people. Danielle called it out. And for that, she was cast out. This is about protecting fragile egos, not enforcing bylaws. And it reeks of retaliatory coordination between DPI leadership and city insiders.
This story isn’t over. It’s accelerating. And if this ends up in court, as it should, I believe the truth will dismantle what these institutions are so desperate to protect. The City of Pittsfield will be held accountable. And when the legal dust settles, and they’re forced to cut a settlement check to the Munn family, Witch Slapped won’t be going away—it will be rising, bigger and louder, with national attention behind it.

If DPI and City Hall had any sense, they’d be making serious efforts to resolve this now. But it seems they’d rather go down swinging than admit they were wrong.
So be it.

I have a question going back to Gary Munns four hour call payments.
It seems that according to its own employee handbook that the city math ain’t mathing here, not Gary’s.
Also the employee handbook does seem to contradict itself and provide unclear guidance.
It states that a full-time work week is 35 hours ” or more”.
Then it goes on to state that the eligible employee is only eligible for that 4-Hour call payment at 40 hours a week.
It’s too murky and unclear. What happens with payments, for instance, if you are under 40 hours but that call brings you over 40?
And I think that word “or” has the potential to be important for the Munns in fighting this.
The handbook also states that the eligible employee is to be either their hourly rate or the 4-Hour rate whichever is higher, and from what we’ve been allowed to see so far it does appear that Gary adhered to that.
Also for an employee who had a problem free career and was well liked on the job with the exception of his brother and maybe one or two other people, it feels like HR didn’t HR properly.
I couldn’t find anything online about Pittsfield City HR procedures, but why did they not have a sit-down with Gary and the man accusing him to review payment policy required on the job behavioral stuff etc?
Until the city can show transparency and produce for the public eye they break down of hours worked by Mr Munn and and at what point that higher rate of payment should have or would have kicked in, —does the employee get a partial payment of that higher rate if say, the first 2 hours of the 4-Hour call bring them to 40 hours?
Why did supervisors continually ignore procedure or, from where we sit without access to all the documentation that shows otherwise, why are supervisors even allowing the appearance that they ignored procedure in which the mayor is supposed to approve and sign off of any of this type of OT?
Why did they continually sign off on it?
As for Mrs Munn, that she is using a homophobic slur against the mayor across all her socials is enough to have her removed whatever boards on which she sits.
And I will point out here that it doesn’t matter if the city mayor is openly gay, not gay, or some letter in the alphabet soup, weaponizing hate and homophobia is not only not a good look, it does get you canceled.
Mrs Munn, we are the Bernie Baran generation running Pittsfield now and your homophobia cannot and will not be tolerated.
Not only is she weaponizing hate and homophobia she is apparently normalizing it among her acolytes as last Monday one of them assaulted two of our members of the alphabet soup community, and then attempted to come after one of them via social media, and not one of us believes he requested his victim’s friendship out of any sort of altruism or willingness to own it and apologize.
We know he was targeting a specific person in the lgbtqia community for targeted hate.
Would this have happened anyway?
Possibly.
But that this assault occurred now by one of her fans after she is all over the socials using a homophobic slur against an openly gay mayor, well. It’s hard to believe it’s coincidence.

It is concerning — and frankly astounding — that you appear capable of referencing policy handbooks when convenient, yet seemingly neglected to review the actual basis for Mrs. Munn’s removal request from DPI. For the record, the reason cited was her public refusal to support businesses that have actively backed policies criminalizing the unhoused — several of which are affiliated with the organization in question. That is not misconduct; that is protected speech grounded in conscience and advocacy.

Now, regarding the allegations of homophobic slurs and assault:
What slur? What assault? And how, exactly, are these accusations being tied to Mrs. Munn — a queer woman herself, who has consistently been one of the most visible and vocal supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community in the region?

Witch Slapped, her business, is a certified safe space. Her team, volunteers, and even her own children identify across the queer spectrum. Her public record shows years of tireless, unapologetic advocacy on behalf of queer, trans, disabled, and marginalized individuals. If you were attempting to discredit her — this is a spectacular misfire.

Spreading false claims, especially those which could incite reputational or physical harm, crosses a line into defamation and endangerment. If these accusations continue without factual basis or verification, you may be held legally accountable for the consequences.

I would strongly recommend that you retract or clarify your statements immediately and ensure that you are not participating in — or enabling — the spread of misinformation that could result in serious harm or liability.

Getting a phone call from my lawyer on a Sunday morning because of this comment was quite interesting.

I applaud you for your investigation work on the handbooks, procedure and OT math. Thank you for taking the time to do that work.

However, I am openly and proudly a queer witch. I did not make any homophobic slurs against the Mayor in anyway. If you are referencing the term “Mean Girl Marchetti”, it’s not a homophobic slur dude. It’s a movie reference to his behavior and the movie is called “Mean Girls”.

I’d also like to know what assault took place that was caused by me? Details please. Nobody knows WTF you’re talking about.

Sarcasm: Mayor Peter Marchetti’s 90-day Grace Period free of citizens exercising our FREE SPEECH is an illustration of Liberty in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Sarcasm: Mayor Peter Marchetti publicly stating that he is NOT a fan of social media forums and blogs is another illustration of Pittsfield politics not being a place of RETRIBUTION.

Sarcasm: Mayor Peter Marchetti’s SILENCE on the SECRET legal report funded by taxpayers that was previously investigated by Pittsfield is an illustration of Profiles in Courage”.

BUT, it is Danielle Munn who is the one who should resign from a Pittsfield useless bureaucracy board because she, along with countless other citizens, publicly criticized the Mayor and his supporters over his “War against the Underclass” residents who panhandle and/or are homeless in inner-city Pittsfield.

This is “The Twilight Zone”! Pittsfield politics’ other name is RETRIBUTION. The sad truth is that taxpayers have to pay Pittsfield City Hall over $226.2 million in fiscal year 2026 that runs from July 01, 2025 through June 30, 2026.

Marchetti will take and sell senior citizen homes by eminent domain to pay for his ballpark if he has to. Heard at my favorite bar the other night that the city is having a huge sign made… Marchetti/White Stadium.

The kids in local first grade now will be paying for that park for the rest of their lives. But, so what? Tuff shit for them. Pete wants a ballpark and he now has the power to roll right over his voters if they don’t get in line.

There are investors groups crawling all over this city 24 hours a day looking for potential money making investments and they pounce when they see one that looks promising. They are the ones who should be taking over this ball park reinvention and most likely would have if they thought it had any real promise.

And maybe they will be running it from the shadows but using a taxpayer funded model greased by the mayor and his wheel of enablers.

If this 30 million dollar (possibly double or triple that before its over) taxpayer outlay was put on a referendum before the voters, (as it would be in any other city in America) it would be voted down in a landslide. It is nothing more than a special interest power play shoving more huge debt on a taxpayer base already beleaguered by escalating cost of living expenses.

Get out if you can, but if you cannot make sure your kids can. They deserve better.

I support the proposal by Marchetti regarding panhandlers, etc. This crowd has plagued downtown for years. Drive thru North St. anytime & see hoodlums, drug addicts stumbling around, bike riders on sidewalks, vagrants in doorways – who wants to shop or spend anytime downtown? The other members are right to ask Danielle Munn to resign. If she wants to run a homeless shelter she should pick another location as she is making the situation worse.

Agree 100%. The homeless should get help, but Pittsfield is a tiny City of 40,000. They are putting a strain on our resources. What is so horrible about relocating some to areas who have more resources. Many are not even from our area. Also a lot of these individuals need Mental Health intervention and Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation, a house would not help them. Witch Slapped is providing a duplicated service , which she should leave to the professionals.

Did you notice his tears at the end when he confesses to his father his shame? It was hard not to be moved by that. How could an actor summon that up so many times during his many performances if he wasn’t traumatized and ashamed of himself and probably heart broken? He loved his father and his father understood.

It was a moving performance and I didn’t expect it. When I hear “One man play” I am always skeptical. I’ve never truly enjoyed a one man play. They’re not convincing or imaginative enough. Well, you wouldn’t know that he was the only one on stage if you didn’t see for yourself. He played many roles and had many conversations and interactions, all while being himself. His honesty was admirable and humble.

The lighting, the visuals and the music played perfectly into the mood, also. There was a certain creativity to the surroundings that helped tell his story.

It was truly an excellent play and I left almost speechless but also more educated about the prejudices that his ethnicity has to face on a regular basis, especially 25 years ago.

Out of Character was everything I want theater to be. The production was tight, lights, set, props, sound all simply and perfectly done. Ariel was compelling from beginning to end. Tony’s direction was subtle and powerful. It’s rare (and I see a lot of local theater) to have a play this magical playing in the Berkshires.

– any posts his handlers instruct him to squelch- he does.

Number 24 – Norwegian film.

WW2 resistance officer, Gunnar Stonseby: “I have five drawers in my heart. The first three I keep open regularly. The fourth I open only sometimes. The fifth drawer I never open. ”

To live to forget who you are is the only way to live.

2 + 2 = 5

There is a Epstein list of rich and powerful men who allegedly raped and/or sexually abused minors.

There is NOT a Epstein list, but minors were allegedly raped and/or sexually abused by….?

Ghislaine Maxwell is in federal prison. Epstein is dead by suicide. The DoJ and FBI said there is no evidence of a list or blackmail. The names remain SECRET. There will be no future arrests.

It is SYNTHETIC! The legal investigations finds the allegations to be UNSUSTAINED! The rich and powerful men don’t exist in the eyes of the law.

2 + 2 = 5

And in both cases – Epstein and PHS – the minors were sexually abused, but SECRECY prevailed.

It is SYNTHETIC!

The largest US Teachers’ Union just cut ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) over its pro-Israel advocacy. The United Federation of Teachers is now endorsing Zohran Mamdani for Mayor of New York. Mamdani wants to globalize the intifada and will not say anything against that idea despite numerous opportunities to walk it back. Mamdani wants to hand over control of the city schools to the teachers’ unions if he is elected mayor. That would essentially give the union free rein to mess up the students as they see fit. Mamdani wanting to give up power over the Department of Education’s $40 billion-a-year budget makes sense only if he also wants to avoid responsibility for the system’s 900,000 students. The Teachers’ Unions across the country have been watering down educational standards when they can’t eliminate them completely. Now we have teachers’ unions embracing antisemitism. Is it any wonder that young people across the country are siding with terrorists. These teachers’ unions are showing their true priorities and it isn’t the students.

Someone on here said there would be increased mayhem. A gay or female mayor and a police chief who’s residents is outside a city spells disaster as criminals figure they’re either week or don’t give a crap.
