(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY AUG. 7, 2019) — The 74th anniversary+1 of the day of the United States needlessly dropping an A bomb at Hiroshima (prefacing an even more heinous “event” three days later at Nagasaki), instantly vaporizing half a million innocent civilians, seems a precipitous time to offer a few modest proposals following the weekend’s action-packed rodeos in El Paso-Dayton.
- Did it ever occur to you that Pittsfield’s “status quo” loves it when national events steal the attention during an election year? The Suits, who have this year’s outcome already in the bag, love the Four Corners “offense.” The last thing they want is too much attention being paid to the sham that has become the elections for mayor, council, and especially school committee. That’s why they must secretly love mass murders. The gun fun supplies several days of not bothering with the campaign. Easier to keep Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, frantically working to keep their financial heads above water, in the dank dark.
- The best way to take these mass rampages out of the news is to just shoot everybody. Simple. Effective. What’s not to like?
- How much has social media hijacked rationality? The New York Times caved to mob pressure and withdrew this page one headline: “Trump Urges Unity vs. Racism.” No matter that the headline was accurate.
- Who among you harbors a secret wish that the death toll from incidents such as mass murders isn’t higher than it turns out? Comic George Carlin made that observation. If you find out a building collapsed, there’s disappointment when you learn no one was killed. After 9/11, initial reports had as many at 10,000 people dying. When the final toll submerged below 3,000, did you feel a letdown? Just a tiny one?
- For common American pastimes such as El Paso-Dayton, THE PLANET sportsbook has installed 20 as the “satisfaction” over/under. If 20 or more die, it’s a satisfied “over.” Under 20 wastes our time. Kudos to the shooter in El Paso for feeding the national lust. As for the loser shooter in Dayton, he should have planned it better. Ten dead won’t cut it.
- “You know the shit he’s been saying. He’s been calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals. I don’t know, like, members of the press, what the fuck” — Quote from that Churchillian stateman and Democrat presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke. Satire is no longer possible.
- In Chicago, Ill-noize, over the same weekend of El Paso-Dayton, there were so much gunplay police literally lost count, so much that Chicago Shot Spotter resigned to become a Hoover vacuum cleaner. There were at least seven murders and more than 50 wounded, almost all of it:
- Black-on-black
- Committed by males against males,
- Under 25
- In a city with the most restrictive gun laws in America. Can’t touch that, though. Black Lies Matter.
- THE PLANET proposes making assault weapons free to all boys middle-school and up to 25 years old. Free ammunition, too. Kids need something to do besides violent video games.
- Apropos of nothing, John Wayne plays a character called “Guns” in Donovan’s Reef.
- Latest TV reality show: Young dumbass males compete for the right to gun down innocent people. Winner gets driven in a limo to a nearby shopping center, outdoor festival, or concert, locked and loaded. He’s given a five-minute shopping spree before cops shoot and kill him. Show’s title: Make Room for Dummy. For that he wins today’s most precious prize, 15 minutes of fame.

The A bombs were needed to save American lives by ending the war much quicker. If we had to take Japan city by city there would have been tremendous losses and firebombs were devastating. My dad could’ve died in an invasion and God Bless Harry effin Truman because my Dad came home and married and raised a family. Got dam japs wouldn’t surrender till we dropped the second one. I agree Dan V. that the Pittsfield election results are already in the bag since either Mazzeo or Tyer will keep the suits and the school employees happy not the majority of the people in the city who they barely know exist.
For an election that is only weeks away, the effort being put out by the candidates is barely registering on the radar. They don’t even bother to debate since they know their views are so similar and they all answer to their Progressive masters in Boston and here in Pittsfield.
Maybe Tyer and Mazzeo are actually running a team effort. Mazzeo to weed out competition in the primary. They have the same special interest goals and may be in bed together trying to pull another one over on the voters. They can both be winners if Tyer gets to keep the corner office, cuz it’s Pittsfield ya know. Is there a high profile position about to open up somewhere?

Perhaps it warrants a column. I have studied long and deep into this issue. Immediately after the bomb was dropped, the U.S. spin was that it ended the war and prevented the necessity of an American invasion of Japan, which would have cost half a million lives (not the million accepted as fact; half a million was the figure the military used after its most thorough analysis). Two points more: (1) There were better alternatives to demonstrate the power of the Bomb w/o dropping it on a live city and (2) The emperor as well as most of his military command were ready for surrender, having realized they were beat. I do grant it will always be argumentative from both sides. Suffice it to say is that based on both moral/ethical considerations, but mainly the cool logic that comes from scholarship, my conclusion is that the U.S. did not need to drop the Bombs.
Also to consider though is that it brought the capability of nuclear weapons front and center. It may have actually saved future lives because now we bend over backwards not to use them. And the ones we have now are many times more powerful than Little Boy and Fatman.

This is interesting to me. A huge part of the end of WW2 was showing superiority not just to axis but also our soviet allies, a precursor to the Cold War. I wouldn’t be surprised if that use of force so close to the Soviets has that in mind. It’s interesting to look back.
I forget what the historical term (Marshall Plan?) for after the war but the US helped Germany, Japan and later South Korea come back to be powerful nations, and allies again. Maybe Japan has alway resented the shame of losing as a proud country but they are still a friend today.

My dad came home from WWI (rifle squadron, front lines, Battle of the Bulge) with some of his gear and also some German stuff, one of which was a handgun. He taught us boys how to shoot rifles and handguns, and that’s where I learned my respect for firearms.

My dad signed up before Pearl. Wanted to be Navy, but was color blind. Ended up 8th Air Force in Britain/Europe. His friends he enlisted with, are still on the Arizona.
He taught me gun safety/hunting , along with my uncles who also lived through the great depression.
My grandparents supplemented a farm with hunting/fishing/trapping.
I learned how to be self sufficient even if poor, without government handouts. Also all about handling firearms.
We were never hungry, but never without work to do, without being paid.
Yes, WWII. We too grew up without much money, though not poor. We were taught to be self-reliant, decent, willing to help out, but taking no one’s guff. We grew up in a neighborhood, with lots of kids, games, and fun. We had our odd jobs and responsibilities (yup, no pay!) but mostly could be free to be kids. We spent tons of time outside, playing ball, army, hide-and-seek, and lots of other games. Summer would find us often at Deming. Winter at the Boys Club. Rode our bokes everywhere. Walked to school and back. It was a different planet, a different universe. No computers, no pop music blaring or playing everywhere, “upstreet” a place for decent people, and busy. There was a more human pace to life.
If only we could go back to the glory days of the 1950’s where men just beat their wives or had them committed and the uppity brown colored people knew their places. What nostalgia!

When I lived in Pittsfield I regularly jogged those neighborhoods. path was down Columbus, out to west, up Onota, out Madison, and back down north street. Nobody every bothered me. Bradford – All your questions certainly deserve an answer, but just want to let you know that BC won’t answer them. I have asked him many legitimate questions on this blog and he has never ever answered them, just bullied me. Guess it is your turn. My feeling is he does not want to answer our questions because the truth will come out. On another note, after reading the article on the Meter issue, I have come to the conclusion that the current Administration and some of the City Council can not take a poop without having to hire a consultant. I find it hard to believe that between Kufflinks, Lovely Linda and Deanna that they can’t figure out how to create an Excel spreadsheet to monitor the Meter issues. Seems like they know how to calculate raising the water rates and also their salaries. Just don’t get it. Sad and scary that these folks are contributing with the decline of Pittsfield instead of trying to make a better City for us hardworking taxpayers.

I never “try to change anyone’s mind.” That is up to them. I will, however, lay out the case for all, including those whose minds are open to reason and logic. That is never “a waste.”
And what is the point of discussing a historical event, speculating about “what could have been?” It’s over, the power of the bomb was released, the war ended. Speculation is useless in this case.

The suggested ban doesn’t go far enough. We need new laws to ban all household knives and cutlery. How about Mothers Against Cutlery and Knives (MACK)?
