PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY, DEC. 4, WORKING TO WEEKEND EDITION, DEC. 5-7, 2014) — Emptying out the grab bag, otherwise known as this writer’s notebook, one finds all sorts of interesting items.

Hypen Happy — State Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier has hired a new legislative aide, Lisa Fletcher-Udel. Must be some kind of new state law about hyphenated last names. Also applying for the job were Julia Best-Lay, Cynthia Busch-Rash, Lindsey Wang-Holder, Shelley Poore-Sapp, Elilzabeth Hardy-Harr, and Kayla Beaver-Wetter. Ladies, as you all know, hyphenated last names show an unacceptable disrespect for your husbands and masters.

——– 000 ——–

Big Brother Knows Best — Late in July, police showed up at a rental condo owned by Water Wizard and landlord Craig Gaetani, a dynamo of a man who has made his presence known to the city in the past several months. Gaetani says the responding officer made incorrect assumptions regarding the responsibility of Gaetani’s brother and sister for a situation involving a tenant. Gaetani requested that he be allowed to tape the officer’s handling of the situation. Gaetani says the officer threatened him with arrest. No one to let a perceived wrong remain unattended, Gaetani filed an official complaint with Police Chief Mike Wynn, who in turn referred the complaint to the city solicitor. That was in August. Gaetani says he hasn’t heard a peep from Kathy Degnan‘s office since. Again, THE PLANET sees the common theme as touted by The Suits: “How DARE a private citizen get involved in local government?” THE PLANET commends Gaetani for his activism. The local power brokers aren’t used to that. We contacted Degnan’s office for a status report and update on Gaetani’s complaint. She has 10 business days, or until the end of the day Monday, Dec. 15, to respond.

——– 000 ——–

Speaking of the Redoubtable Mr. G — Gaetani told THE PLANET that anyone who questions his scientific expertise or background in general — or simply wishes to discuss his ideas with respect to technology — to call him at 413-442-5466. He is open, forthright, and more than willing to cooperate. He is, unlike the officials who so like to criticize him, transparent. Gaetani says he wants to reassure any doubters that he’s the real deal. The bottom line with Mr. G and Dr. Lawrence K. Wang is this: They claim to have the technological expertise (and the track record to back it up) to save the city tens of millions of dollars in the upcoming federally mandated updates to the sewage treatment plant off of Holmes Road, so why not invite them in and vet their plans? There is nothing to lose except a little time and tons of potential gain. Is the city afraid that these two men know what their talking about? Or could the apparent reluctance of the city (mayor, council, city solicitor, DPW director, etc) relate more to politics than to pragmatism? Why would the city prefer to spend $40 million+ extra for the project? If that is indeed the case, the only satisfactory answer THE PLANET can come up with is “the ‘C’ word” — corruption. It’s just a question, but could there be windfalls in kickbacks attached to a public works project of this size? It’s been known to happen. Check your memory units under “B” for “Big Dig.”

——– 000 ——–

Prescient Just Shy of Prophetic — In light of Gaetani’s request that he be allowed to tape the response of the police officer, THE PLANET recalls that one of Mr. G’s petitions filed with the city council requested that citizens be allowed to have phone calls with city officials taped, for protection against possible abuse. That was before the events in Ferguson. Now we see that non other than President Obama wants to outfit local police around the country with mini-cameras to act as neutral witnesses to disputed events. Locally, in the past couple days, a citizen was arrested for filming a Pittsfield police officer who was conducting a traffic stop. It is not illegal to do this, provided that the camera is not concealed. When the police returned the smart phone to its owner, everything was still on it — except what the citizen filmed. Just a coincidence, we are sure. Thus, the policy of citizen documentation of public officials (an issue of accountability) is taken seriously at the highest levels of government, but in Podunk, Mass., it’s treated like Ebola. Council president Melissa Mazzeo did with Gaetani’s petition what she has done with all of his suggestions. She’s sent them to administrative Siberia. That’s not good enough. Citizens, unite. It’s time to let local government know that when you speak, when you get involved, they better respond. Why? Elementary, my dear Watson: Because you are T.H.E. B.O.S.S.

——– 000 ——–

Getting High All the Time and At All Hours Too — OK, so you know about the Monday driver who smashed into a utility pole on South Street, near Lipton’s. You know that the pole crashed into another vehicle, and an innocent man was almost electrocuted. You also know that the Pittsfield Fire Department reported the errant driver said to them that he was high on heroin at the time he was driving. It was all soooooooooo Pittsfield, but so was the response of the city’s police department. Instead of putting out a sign indicating a detour for South Street motorists, the city had a lone officer standing next to his car, which was blocking the road. Motorists complained of no “detour’ signage, which could have eased the traffic mess. What is it, folks? The air? The soil? The water? The bad politics? The driver was released on bail armed with the judge’s admonition not to take heroin while driving a vehicle. As one commentator to THE PLANET so aptly put it, who knew kicking Horse was so easy?

——– 000 ——–

Christmas Rumors — Is it true that when the city lights the Christmas tree in park square, it will also show Dumb and Dumber on the “screen” formed by that empty giant picture frame? Is it also true that Santa will not be making any appearances in Pittsfield this year, because he’s learned that the city is not only anti-citizen, but it’s also Claustrophobic?

——– 000 ——–

Uniforms At Last?! — Word come from The Secret Squadron that the new principal at Herberg Middle School wants students to wear uniforms, to which we can only say, “Hooooray!!!” From our Z-Agent: “Word came up informally at an Egremont school council meeting [Monday night] and everyone there — teachers and parents — supported the notion.” Could it be that Pittsfield has found at least one administrator who is not a barking-mad disciple of failed progressive educational policies (“self-esteem,” ignored zero-tolerance, “feel good,” and the like) in favor of action that doesn’t cost a lot of money, installs both discipline and pride in the student body, and has a proven track record of increasing classroom performance? THE PLANET has to meet this person. He or she may be the winner of the next ORBIT Award.

I heard that Susan Mussen-Touchit also applied for the aide position at China Doll’s Office ( the Aging Greek once called Trisha ” China Doll ”
because she visited China as a tourist and then claimed she was a consultant to the Government ) now that’s a padded resume ! .

Whenever you film the police in their line of duty, have the video uploaded to “the cloud” in real time.

That way when you are illegally arrested for disorderly conduct and your device is illegally confiscated, the police cannot erase the video as it will not be on the device but on online servers untouchable by the police.

There are even apps designed to do this as well as apps that record your confrontation with the police that automatically upload to the cloud and send a copy to your lawyer.

Everyone should film the police at every opportunity they get. They should in no way interfere with police activity. If your rights are violated you should sue the police department and the city and anyone involved in violating your rights, using the video as evidence.

School uniforms is an excellent idea. Good luck getting this past the wimpy school committee though. Can the city council, lead by Mr Krol, make the taxpayers pay for them?

And I think Santa already did come to Pittsfield in the form of pay raises, school buses and new city hall offices.

I have always been in favor of school uniforms. It’s sensible in every sense.
As for the dirty, corrupt Mayor and his pawns, Mr. Gaetani accentuates this Mayor’s lack of brain power. His pawns rubber stamp it. This City Government needs consultants for everything that come before them. They are incapable of expertise at anything. Mr. Gaetani and Wang should be welcomed. Worth the time to hear what they have to say…..Oh yes Mayor dumbass can’t let taxpayers see what they already know. He is a Major failure.

Mr. Gaetani needs to take his credibility to the next level. His offer of a telephone conversation would only result in his voice on the line verbalizing self grandiose rhetoric. Even Leonardo DiCapio proclaimed himself, “King of the World”. Mr. Gaetani can proclaim himself “King of Anything He Says He Is”. Talk is cheap. He needs to make public tangible documentaion and proof of his verbal assetions. Copies of his diplomas, degrees, his registered patents, his name on independently filed plans, blueprints, designs. A verified work record ? An independent background investigation, etc. ?
With all due respect, it’s time to step up to the plate, Mr. G.

Ed in the older days guys came out of highschool and worked thier way up from the bottom of a company. I know some guys like this with no formal higher learning who are real smart guys an businessmen. These days it’s seems everyone is chasing some irrelevant degree so they can get a high paying job at the top right off the bat. Now I’m not knocking education but it’s not really as essential as some people will want us to believe to be successful.

Mr. Gaetani and Mr. Wang established their work in Pittsfield. Mayor Bianchi is obviously lacking..and feels threatened in common sense. It is what it is…precisely and clearly.

Obama’s idea to outfit police with mini cameras is downright stupid. Everyone knows that if the police were doing something wrong those cameras would be turned off ‘accidently’, or magically ‘malfunction’, or the damning part of the video would somehow get edited out or go missing. This has all happened before with police car cameras.
Just another dumb idea by a disaster of a president.

It’s clear that the Wizard’ a name which I’ll take the credit for seeing that no one knew what his credentials were? Anywho, for whatever reason, Doc Wang and the Wiz’ are unable to secure any confidence with the Mayor or the council. So, that being said, how is the Doc and the Wiz supposed to formalize a presentation without the support of the council or the mayor?

I find it unethical to link Dr. Wang to this discussion. Dan, have you interviewed Dr. Wang? Has Dr. Wang issued a press release? If so, I cannot find it. Mr. Gaetani’s only credibility is through his use of Dr. Wang’s name and Dr. Wang is nowhere to be found.

Below is a link to the company Krofta is today and its history.

You will not find any mention of Mr. Gaetani.

I agree with Lenny, I have researched Craig Gaetani’s name through Google, after much time spent, I found a brief mention of him at MCLA, formerly North Adams State College. It is unusual that a man as distinguished as he claims to be would not have his degrees mentioned, his past employment history, all we read is about his anger at the Council and the Mayor. He should direct everyone to a link providing information, a phone call is inadequate.

So I guess what I’m seeing in some of the comments is if I as a private citizen have an idea to save tax dollars unless I have educational credentials I should jut shut the hell up? I bet I could make the cities painting detail department run more efficiently but then again I have no credentials just a high school drop out (I went back and received my deploma from PPS.) with a whole bunch of real world expirience from sales, marketing, actual labor and customer service among other things. I guess you could find that info online though if you googled me. I do however agree I would like to visually see an actual proposal.

Scott,

If a private citizen offers a plan to save money, few would question their credentials at the outset. In this case, Mr. Gaetani claims to have exceptional credentials but provides no way to verify them. For municipal projects, the credentials in question are essential.

Scott what I find so amazing is now credentials and supporting material is so essential. Don’t get me wrong I am happy that its become significant.
Might I remind everyone that the current Mayor didn’t need credentials to give now convicted fraud Michal Armitage a pile of cash for his venture. We won’t mention the always trust worthy Ed Caveney who got a new house well 158k down payment for one care of the Pittsfield taxpayers.

Is it possible this guy is for real? It most certainly is. Is it equally possible no city official would be able to understand the proposal and decide if its fact or fiction? Possibly once again

Hi Scott,

Let me restate my point here. The issue of credentials is that C. Gaetani claims to be an inventor of water treatment systems. Where’s the proof?

At this point, he is now being elevated by some to the levels of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison on top of Merlin the Magician. What employer would take that resume seriously?

Joe Pinhead

No one is elevating him or anyone else to Edison status. The point I was and am making is simple. Edison Tesla etc were eccentric and some might say flamboyant or passionate as well. Let’s judge the proposal not the speaker.
What have the collective authorities done thus far to address control or plan for regarding the situation? The plant has issues how do we as a community address and resolve them?

That argument kind of reminds me of the whole Obama birth certificate thing… Hopefully he presents his credentials along with his proposal. The mayor however already has his heart set on a new system. He stated that early in is reign. It just got lost in the arguments over new police stations and schools/school busses.

Just curious to know if the famous Kroftka Sand Float is applicable in 2014 to our current water filtration system?
BASICALLY here are the principles involved as such
.Untreated effuent arrives in the center distributor via gravity or pump
. Effuent mixes with air from the recycled air carrier water
. Effuent and air mixture enters the tank
. Fine air bubbles lift the suspended, flocculated solids
. to the water surface
. Heavier particles settle to the tank floor
.Clear water between the floated and settled solids is discharged and flows through an adjustable outlet weir
. Float matter (sludge) is removed by the rotating spiral coop
.Sludge is discharged in through a pipe in the center distributor
. Suspended bottom scraper pushes sludge through the center off a tank and into the sludge pit
. Sludge is removed intermittently through an automatically operated unmatched valve
. Recycled air carrier water is pumped at a pressure about 80 psi into the retention tank
. compressed air enters the compression tan directly
. Air carrier water is released into the center distributor after mixing with the raw affluent..

Sounds like city hall might want to consider installing one of these sludge removal processes at the back door.

Can an individual school like Herberg decide on it’s own to establish uniform requirements? Or must the School Comm. make that decision and then it must be for all Pittsfield public schools.

99%+ sure that the School Committee needs to approve the whole system or for an individual school; it could be authorized as a pilot program.

A little off topic chuckle. While stopped at the traffic light in front of 100 North st., I noticed a sandwich board type sign in the front of the building. It was a sign for a hair restoration business located in suite 210, the same floor the city of Pittsfield rents. So after you pull out all of your hair running around trying to get permits, you can go to suite 210 and have it restored. Have a great weekend all!
