PLANET VALENTI News and Commentary

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEEKEND EDITION, MAY 29-31, 2015) — It is a privilege to live in “America’s Home Town,” which is how Stockbridge markets itself. Year round, but particularly from now through Labor Day, people come to the town from all over the world. They come for many reasons, but they can be summed up with the word “pace.” In Stockbridge, you won’t find a traffic light. You might not be able to get cell phone coverage. Streets are clean. Yards are well kept. Main Street looks the same as it did when Norman Rockwell painted his iconic vista nearly 60 years ago.

Our Memorial Day parade is small, authentic, self-contained, and possessor of a quiet confidence that exudes from a community that takes pride in itself. We tend to draw people who seek office, then serve, not for the faux-“glory” of seeing your name on the letterhead or in print but because they genuinely want to apply their talents along the lines of excellence for the betterment of public life. Once upon a time, Pittsfield knew the type. They were called “public servants.”

Stockbridge has a new police chief. You don’t “replace” a chief like Rick Wilcox, who served the department for more than 40 years, 28 of them at the helm. When Wilcox retired in 2013, the town did what Pittsfield almost never does. It actually conducted the “nationwide search.” It wanted the best person for the job.

Stockbridge found him.

THE PLANET has had the pleasure numerous times of talking with Chief Robert Eaton, who took over in February 2014. Eaton came from Smithfield, R.I., where he served as captain. Eaton has re-made the office, re-thought the town’s policing strategies, and imposed a genuine “vision” on his work.

STOCKBRIDGE POLICE CHIEF ROBERT EATON (PHoto by Ben Garver, The Berkshire Eagle)

Yeah, THE PLANET knows, when you hear the word “vision” you want to wretch in your oatmeal. That’s because you’re used to the clown politics of the county seat. Eaton wants a department that’s responsive, innovative, perceptive, and run with foresight. Just one quick example: The chief has worked tirelessly to promote regional intelligence gathering and sharing. To that end, he wants to certify the Stockbridge Police Department through the state’s Police Accreditation Commission. PAC status certifies a department’s excellence and professionalism. He’s aiming high, and our bet is that his grasp keeps pace with his reach.

Now more Mayberry. Welcome 21st century policing.

Change can ruffle feathers, and the chief has. This tells THE PLANET that he’s doing a good job, because he’s ruffling the right feathers. There’s one metric, however, that can’t be measured: compassion. Is Eaton a people “cop”?

THE PLANET obtained a copy of the following letter sent on Jan. 21 to the Stockbridge Board of Selectmen. It reads as follows:

(HEADER) Re: Serve and Protect

Dear Members of the Board:

My sincere thanks to the Stockbridge Police and Fire Departments.

On January 21, my brother, Richard Carlotta, indicated to me he was in medical distress. I live in Ashley Falls and couldn’t get out because of ice conditions. I called Abby at the Coffee Shop on Elm Street and asked her to contact Police Chief Eaton to do a wellness check on my brother. Within a half hour, I was notified by the police department that Richard was on his way by ambulance to Fairview Hospital. By then I was able to get to the hospital and was told he might not have made it without the immediate response of Chief Eaton and Chris (I don’t know his last name). Richard was transferred to BMC that evening.

Since then Chief Eaton has personally checked on Richard, and when he was back in his apartment, the Chief and Chris visited with him.

This is an extraordinary incident of “serve and protect,” and the Town of Stockbridge should be very proud of its Police Department and Emergency Responders. I know that I am.

Sincerely,

Lois Van Cleef.

——– 000 ——–

“I know that I am,” Lois closes here note.

So are we, Lois, so are we.

If you visit the Stockbridge Coffee and Tea Shop on Elm Street, next to Elm Street Market, you will usually find our dear friend Richard Carlotta there. He’s a Stockbridge institution. THE PLANET has known Richard for years and have enjoyed countless conversations and visits. A combat veteran of the Korean War who saw rough action, Richard is a hero in our book, and because of Bob Eaton, we still have him around to make the day.

Thank you, Chief.

Look it up!

Have a great weekend, everybody.

Stockbridge has a model downtown, while Pittsfield has a downtown most people avoid, especially after hours. Over 60 percent of Pittsfield’s residents are on welfare or are low income workers. Pittsfield has high taxes, fees, spending, and debts. Pittsfield politics is totally corrupt and ran for the vested interests.

Dan,

Hanging on the wall in my home is a nice beautifully framed print of downtown Stockbridge. Pittsfield is always will be my hometown. I am not ashamed of where I came from but am disgusted in what Pittsfield has become.

I left Pittsfield, selling my home in one of the previous Mass exodus’ s many years ago and never regretted it for a moment. The State and town I moved to are wonderful. A community of great people, fresh air, clean water and low taxes and cost of living.

When friends here see the print of Stockbridge, I prefer to say its a small town in the area where I grew up. I’ve worked there. Spent many hours of my life there. It truly is as close to Mayberry as you’re going to get.

Although Norman Rockwell put Stockbridge on the map, I was super impressed by John Lennon’s visit there and being at the Red Lion Inn.

Stockbridge does have squeeky clean image. Even in today’s decaying society.

You should be proud to live there. Its a testament to your sucess in life.

“Now the first of December was covered with snow
and so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston.
Though the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting, with ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go.”

Dan,
Well written, excellent read , about Stockbridge Police Chief Eaton. Stockbridge is fortunate to have a Chief who is innovative, and sharp.

It’s all BS spa. Valenti’s only goal in life is to run down Pittsfield. If he had a heart issue and his 90 plus dad had a heart issue at the same time and he called chief Eaton and his mom called Pittsfield 911 you can bet your life that his dad would be in an ambulance before help even arrived in Stockbridge.

Pittsfield will be giving free breakfasts and lunches in the elementary schools beginning in the fall because Pittsfield is so poor that we qualify for the free food for the kids. I’m glad the kids will be getting the free food, but what does this say about the city that so many are so poor that we qualify for this? It’s tells me that Pittsfield has gone way downhill from its glory days. Bad leadership and bad people in positions of authority have brought this once great city to its knees. I haven’t read this story in the Berkshire Eagle only on iberkshires and I heard it on a local radio station. For the Berkshire Eagle to run this story would force them to call attention to the enormous amount of poor people living in the city and take away from their emphasis on the cultural and artistic wonders of Pittsfield. To mention the out of control poverty in the city would require a reality check and that isn’t something the Berkshire Eagle wants any of us to have.

When 60% of kids and their families in the city are living in poverty this should be the number one issue on the mayoral campaign trail. Bianchi has done nothing about poverty in the city during his whole tenure as mayor so if he suddenly seems interested now, don’t believe it. As for the other candidates, I’m not sure where they stand on a plan for the astounding amount of poverty in Pittsfield and what they plan to do about it. If any candidate mentions putting more taxpayer dollars toward the schools, I strongly urge all voters to tune out. We should be hearing about job creation, putting more money in the pockets of the poor and not taking it away from them in the form of higher taxes for boosting already extremely high salaries of the Pittsfield school administration and teachers. It should be all about improving the economy of the city in order to improve the lives of the people living in poverty here in the city of Pittsfield. This should be the number one priority of the candidates in this upcoming mayoral race.

McCandless also claims that lunch is the “last meal” for many of them, demonstrating that he should either be removed from office for lying, or arrested for not reporting child abuse, since the parents of these kids are of course getting a generous food stamp subsidy. This is a guy sucking around a quarter million out of the community, best thing government can do for poverty is to stop stealing

You hit it right on the head Wilson. I think he should be jailed for such an absurd observation. Everyone knows that generous food stamp subsidy is used just for nutritious food and nothing else. We also know that ALL of these kids sit down to a family meal every evening and discuss the doings of the day.

I have lived in Pittsfield all of my life which has been a very long time. Does anyone ever ponder what pristine Stockbridge might be like if William Stanley had opted to build his transformer shop on the shores of Stockbridge Bowl rather than Silver Lake.

LOL…My thoughts exactly Jimmy Gee, or at least called Stockbridge police directly. I mean, does she have the coffee shop number on speed dial? Cuz if not, it’s just as easy to look up the police number, and of course, ever faster to just dial 911. It is a funny and enlightening story though about the general thought processes of people in this area: call someone you KNOW!

Now, on a different compassion subject regarding the chief, former chief Wilcox supposedly had an alternative means for dealing with speeders rather than writing them a ticket; one that reportedly benefited the children of the town without registering points on a license. It was a real, and mostly effective small town/Mayberry-type solution. Is that still happening in Stockbridge?

T. A very astute observation and germane synopsis of Pittsfield’s social economic status, unfortunately very true.
Altough, it has been said many times and in many ways, is redundant and ruffles the feathers of those affected, a disproportionate number of the city’s managers and employees simply don’t have a truly vested interest in the state of the city nor the city tax rates. They live in other communities and leave Pittsfield in their rear view mirror when commute to surrounding municipalities and states..
The number of these expatriot city employees is a carefully guarded secret. Even Mr. Valenti and Craig”Waterman” Gaetani have been thawted at the stoop of the “Sheffield Shuffler” in their futile attempts to penatrate this sacred veil of secrecy.
Some of these positions filled with nonresidents are more visible than others. Even the mayor’s Director of Administrative Services and her school dept. employed spouse have fled the city which sustains them. There are many, many more; community development director residing in New York State, a director of PEDA from Willimstown, and so forth and so forth. Not to mention a virtual cavalcade of teachers, police officers, firemen, public workmen, etc., etc.
How many can you name ? And like it has been said, why bother ? It’s the Pittsfield way.
The lame argument espoused by certain elements of the politically entrenched, that there are no qualified Pittsfield residents to fill these positions is vacillating horse dung. Get out and actvely pursue qualified City taxpayers and residents and when an aggressive recruitment isn’t successful; train the most qualified of city residents or assure outsiders hired by the city become taxpayers and community residents.
It is indeed time for Pittsfield to take back Pittsfield !

I think part of the reason some folk avoid running for office in Pittsfield is their fear of being caught up in a no win cluster muck, do as I say or get run over, situation. Occasionally you used to see a councilor who really cared banging his head against the wall trying to clue his fellow councilors as to some completely obvious point only to go home baffled that his reasoning hit a wall so hard. The deck is obviously heavily stacked for the special interests and most sensible people just cannot afford to give up so much time and effort in such a low percentage venture. It is easier to just pay the extortion taxes or hit the road.

ED MAC, I could not say it better than your post .Even at the meeting for the new THS the audience was packed with out of towners and the same old special interest groups. Ironically I was going to post on this topic today.Good post .I have always said that IF the public is given the opportunity like the opportunity to post on this site, the real feelings of the residents will be heard. When I become mayor , we are going to do things very differently. people will say you cant do this or that and I will say just watch me I am running for mayor to insure there are many changes and corrections in this city. I am not in the race for any monetary purposes and don’t have to worry about re-election. I don’t want any endorsements from any one except the hard working residents of this city. The special interest group will find no favor from me. The only group who will be constantly on my radar is the tax and rate payers period. amen.

I agree. I’m so sick of hearing those at the top say that there are so many jobs unfilled because people in the area don’t have the skills, but the people leaving the area are those with skills and college degrees because they can’t find employment here. It’s so much baloney. This line of thinking might apply to some jobs, but the people leaving have lots of education because all of the money in this city or 70% of it is poured into the school system. We have colleges in the area as well. These are just excuses because the GOB’s don’t like home grown talent. They will take outsiders first for the jobs and then next would be their friends and relatives.

So many of the people getting the big salaries in the school system such as the administrators and teachers don’t even live in Pittsfield, but are living well off of high taxes on the poor in the city.

It’s time for a change I agree, but are the voters really ready for a dramatic change instead of having the same old broken promises. We need an independent thinker not a follower. We don’t need someone who folds under pressure. what we do need is someone whom isn’t afraid to make a few enemies on the way to success for the city.
I mean how many of these elected officials would still be around if there was’t a paycheck to collect? Probably no one would want it and that just goes to show that they are there for their own selfish reasons and not for the love of the city..

Tammy, few local officials do it for the the money. For the one’s that work hard at it which to my knowledge most of them do in Pittsfield do contrary to popular belief, the breakdown between their compensation and time does not equate. If money was their primary incentive then bartending would provide more extra cash for the time.

Also you seem very harsh on local officials but your debate showed that you put almost no work into learning any of the issues. I’m just advising you if you want to walk the walk I’d like to see you come out strong on your homework next run

Yeah, we get it. Stockbridge is this nice cozy town that does things differently and quite well. But it has the advantage of having a wealthy population, and is small enough so that a certain way of doing things can be pervasive.
That is why it’s downright nuts that anyone could think Pittsfield could model itself after Stockbridge. Completely different demographics.

* You will still lose your job if you speak out against the Good Old Boys corruption over Pittsfield politics
* Dan Bianchi will continue to work two jobs and run Pittsfield politics over the proverbial cliff (nilan)
* Jack Downing will continue pay lobbyist Peter Larkin thousands of dollars per meant for homeless Veterans
* The Pittsfield airport runway project will cost more than $3.5 million
* There will be many more home foreclosures and delinquent tax accounts
* Pittsfield politics will continue to raise your taxes, take away your job, infect you with PCBs pollution, make you afraid of crime, spend your money on North Street and a new Taconic High School, and send your children to poorly performing schools where they get pregnant as teenagers and go on welfare
* The #1 community in Massachusetts for pregnant mothers who smoke cigarettes is none other than Pittsfield. The #11 community for teen pregnancies in Massachusetts is Pittsfield. Will the negative trends continue in Pittsfield? Answer: Of course!
* The vested interests will continue to make Pittsfield unaffordable to the little guy (the “Kapanski” family) who is not politically connected to get a city, school, or non-profit job
* They will support police state policies such as having a police officer present at open mic at the beginning of the city council meetings

Minorities….there are very few minorities in Stockbridge unless you
consider those associated with a well educated population that is within a different class associated with South County’s population..
Thus there is very little crime in Stockbridge though I’m sure it exists.

Horace, I told everybody I learn fast. I am getting the hang of this computer posting and will get better and better at it, The Cleveland in my article was the KROFTA Cleveland plant. Our other Pittsfield plant is called Ashley PLANT..We built two other plants in BERK COUNTY, LEE MA. and LENOX MA . We also built plants in Illinois and new jersey. and several more in SOUTH AMERICA. Yesterday I visited the BERK. EAGLE. About their poor coverage of the real political situation in this this city I spoke to JIM THERIEN the city reporter, and told him that he is personally responsible for our senior citizens being in the dark as to what is going on in this city.HE shrugged it off as no big deal.I reminded him about his biased reporting of my press conf which he never attended and what I considered to be libelous rhetoric as to what he reported occurred at several ccm meetings. where by he was factually wrong. This didn’t seem to bother him either I DONT EXPECT HE WILL EVER BECOME AN UNBIASED REPORTER AND THAT HE WAS SQUARLY ON THE SIDE OF THIS INCOMPETENT MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL.I have a few tricks up my sleeve for him . I will now include the biased reporting of the BERK EAGLE as part of my campaign for mayor as this situation can not allow to stand. This situation with the news dept. is very serious and could have serious consequences in the upcoming election. I will do my part to make sure Ms.. Tyer and MR. Bassete are heard loud and clear when they become active in this campaign. I will do everything I can to level the playing field for all of us. This situation is deplorable and everybody has to come together to solve this totally unacceptable situation. Glad to hear you will be making the biased reporting of the Berkshire Eagle as part of your campaign. It’s about time this issue is brought out into the open. Many people are aware of it, but many are still in the dark. Of course many don’t care about it mainly because they are part of the problem and actually like the biased reporting.

The BB finally runs an article about the free meals for elementary schools kids, but as usual puts a positive spin on it. Yes, this will be less money coming out of the pockets of the poor parents, but will the government also improve the home lives of these poor children so they don’t live in such a noisy stressful environment and can do their homework every night in peace? Lack of food can be an issue for the poor, but that is only one of money issues facing the poor. It won’t solve the problem. Only jobs for the poor will help so dad won’t be worrying about paying the bills and mom and dad aren’t fighting about money in front of the kids or worse mom and dad get divorced over the stress of money problems. Money problems are the number one source of stress in a marriage and when people live in poverty as they do here in Pittsfield, money problems can cause drug use, violence in the home, and alcohol abuse just to name a few. The answer is for area progressive Democrats to solve the problem of poverty and not continue to put band-aids on a gaping wound. Linda Tyer came out loudly and boldly proclaiming she is a progressive. I don’t see much to be proud of here in Pittsfield when poverty is this rampant. Guess the arts as a solution to the problems of the area hasn’t worked out so great?

The only benefiter is the HON owner and the contractor ( whom I think is the HON owner also). They are getting tax breaks, didn’t renovate one of the empty buildings. They used one that seemed to have thriving businesses. And finally the jobs are jobs that the immigration proponents say Americans don’t want to do.

It will undoubtedly be hard for HON to succeed, but if it does, it will bring improvement to the area. Businesses such as Carr Hardware, Dottie’s and Hotel on North make it possible that the northern part of the North Street business area will see reduced crime and become a more walkable, enjoyable, safe environment.

I don’t expect Pittsfield to be like Stockbridge. On the other hand I don’t expect Pittsfield to continue being a poor drug infested community and that we all just accept it and get on with it as being okay because of the demographics of the city. The same people who deplore the fact that there are so many poor people in Pittsfield and supposedly feel so bad about it, are the same people we see each summer attending the high price tag parties and openings in South County and appearing on the pages of Rural Intelligence. Many are members of the Pittsfield schools and others are political figures. They will throw crumbs to the poor, but seldom make any lasting and truly effective changes in the lives of the downtrodden of the city. Poverty is growing in Pittsfield and little is being done about it. We need leaders to step up and acknowledge the problem and offer viable solutions. The same old tired answers of bringing more arts into the city or turning the city into a tourist destination are getting old. These ideas have proven ineffective. Social service agencies in the area are overwhelmed with the fallout from the high rate of poverty. Poverty leads to all kinds of instability in the home including substance abuse and even violence.
