JIV’s sub PERFORMANCE ON ‘GUNGATE’ IS WORTHY OF A SUSPENSION — OR A FIRING

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY-TUESDAY, OCT. 26-27, 2015) — It’s finally happened. The citizens of Pittsfield have seen the true face of its $200,000-a-year superintendent of schools. That’s the silver lining of Gungate, wherein a 13-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun to South Junior High School, an asylum masquerading as a place of learning some call Herberg.

If District Attorney David Capeless had not rebuked and corrected Supt. Jason “JIV” McCandless on the cover-up, would JIV have admitted that the gun was loaded? Our educated guess is that sans the D.A.’s correction, McProfiles-in-Candless would have stuck by the story that the gun found in the kid’s knapsack was not loaded.

Worthy of Suspension or Firing?

JIV’s reactions to Gungate have been deplorable, worthy of a suspension if not outright firing. Of course, this being Pittsfield, the gonad-free Pittsfield School Committee might see JIV’s actions as cause for another six-year extension and a huge pay raise. The PSC’s slimy “hero” tried to bury the real news and fell on his sword to get the mayor off the hook.

Consider the facts:

* JIV couldn’t wait until all the facts were known before he issued an erroneous press release telling the community the gun wasn’t loaded. In doing so, he implied there was no actual danger. He admitted he was in such a rush to get information out that it led to what he chin-lessly termed “a misunderstanding.” Misunderstanding? Why not man up and tell us the reason you were in a rush? Was it to downplay a potentially tragic incident so you could maintain a fiction that “Everything’s great” and “There’s nothing to see here?”

* JIV admitted that he, not the mayor or the mayor’s administrative assistant, wrote the press release issued by the mayor’s office. He did so only after Capeless spoke out. It became clear to THE PLANET that JIV and the mayor’s office were in cahoots. If not, why would the mayor’s office allow the superintendent to dictate the contents of a memo on the corner office’s letterhead, especially regarding a deadly serious subject such as a teenager bringing a loaded gun to school? Unacceptable.

* Even after the truth came out to reveal the kid was in the building brandishing a loaded gun, JIV continued to downplay the gravity of the incident. He blew what remained of his credibility with a preposterous statement essentially telling us he has the power to look into souls and read thoughts and intentions. That is what JIV would have you believe when made public comments that led to this headline in The Boring Broadsheet: “No evidence armed Herberg student planned ‘mass harm,’ school chief says.” Notice the careful parsing: How could he know that at this early phase of the investigation? What’s JIV not telling us?

* Then there were this troubling paragraph tucked safely in the middle of Phil Demers‘ story:

“However, McCandless did say several other students were suspended after being found to have been ‘involved’ in the incident.”

Other students were “involved?” How so? In light of that shocking admission, how can JIV make any judgments at this stage that no “mass harm” was intended? Look, you don’t just issue a statement like that then walk away. What does “involved” mean? Sorry, folks, but this doesn’t pass the smell test. The community deserves answers.

Comforting Words Mean Nothing When They’re Fraudulent

Who’s to say subsequent probing will bear out The BB headline or shoot it down (pun intended)? Does the superintendent think that little of citizens that he would, twice now in Gungate, publicly issue a CYA rush to judgment?

Speaking for public consumption, JIV told Kameron Spaulding of The Berkshire Courier, ” … our first aim, as always, was to ensure that students were safe and that parents … were communicated with as quickly as possible.” Nice words. Comforting words. The only problem is, based on the actions taken and the manner in which they were taken, they’re fraudulent. JIV’s “first aim” was to try to disguise the true nature of the threat. Such irresponsibility should have consequences —

— Ah, but this is Pittsfield.

Where did the kid get the gun? This info usually shows up in such stories. Oh, I forgot we are in Pittsfield and Mr Bianchi has an information lockdown policy.

“That should be a given, and the student’s parents should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for not properly safeguarding the weapon. “

Irwin Moiseff is rough around the edges but i think a solid choice. He is definitely concerned for our pockets and for that alone he is worth a shot.
Dan Elias as well. Hes been there for 18 yrs and seems to legitimately care about the kids and kids only.

I remember years ago a kid bringing in a gun in a gym bag at Reid it was a 38 cal. revolver Dirty Harry look alike. I’m not positive but I don’t think it made the paper. When you look back at December 13, 1992 Wayne Lo SKS at a gun shop that afternoon. Wayne Lo commenced shooting at around 10:30 pm., killing two people and wounding four others. Lo surrendered to the police after his rifle jammed and he called 911, informing them that he was the shooter. Fast forward to The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. My point is the media headlines are bigger and bolder to push the anti gun agenda and drive it home and we are playing into it with our reactions to this incident. Let’s remember this was a small caliber handgun and the kid was wearing red color clothing and out of uniform for a college prep student.

I disagree Ron. This is a new Era, and the Public should be very much informed, and Safety should be a priority, not fumbled and covered up. Jake, The Mayor, and Wynn are equally to blame. This is not acceptable, and the Citizens are not over playing it.

The name of the woman who broke into cars has not been revealed.

The parents of the kid who took a loaded gun to Herberg are also being sheltered.

When did our city change it’s policy of naming criminals?

Shouldn’t neighborhoods be aware of criminals living nearby, if they are to protect their families.

Perhaps I am overstating this, but it appears that the only ones being protected are those who break the law. It looks like it’s open season for the rest of us.

“No evidence armed Herberg student planned ‘mass harm,’ school chief says.”
He may not have planned mass harm, but a loaded “clip” or magazine can hold any where from 9 to 15 bullets and you fire them as fast as you can pull the trigger. Lots of harm can be done in a matter of seconds in the wrong hands.

This is a man with a Doctorate making the no harm statement. Someone else said we have it under control,if you had it under control the kid woldn’t have got the weapon in the School in the first place. Maybe Dr. J wants the early release Monterosso style contract?

DV as usual brings up questions and points you can find no where else. And to his question would Jiv have come clean about the gun being loaded after he released his crock about “not loaded” the answer is no no no. This was another coverup in the works then the DA came out with the truth.

There needs to be mandatory jail sentences (ninety days or more) for any licensed gun owner (or proxy) who “allows” his gun to be removed/stolen/borrowed by any other person not licensed to possess this same gun. It matters not how the gun was obtained by the non licensed person.

Lots of crimes occur in this county and are not reported or are hidden from the public. There doesn’t seem to be any sharing of information among police in various cities and towns either. Assaults (at least five) have been happening on the Cheshire end of the walking trail, which also has an entrance by the Berkshire Mall, since May, but the first anybody heard about it was a few days ago when the latest woman was given a lewd gesture and grabbed on the trail last Tuesday, but managed to get away.

Many people enter the trail on the Lanesboro side and walk to the Cheshire side. I think it would have been nice to let people know what was going on so they could have taken precautions to protect themselves or not walked alone on the trail in the first place. What is the problem with this county when those in a position to do so don’t give out information to protect the public or withhold information to protect connected individuals?

Anyone catch the Bianchi endorsement in the Eagle today from Rep. Richard E. Neal? I cannot wait for a $10 Billion Manufacturing and Innovation Center to be built!

I wonder if JIV wrote that release for Dan, at the same time as he was writing the release on the gun incident?

” Due to the previous administrations issues and problems that I have inhered the announcement we sent out about guns in the schools was wrong because of the GOB’s. We used to bring guns and ammunition to school all the time.

We would hunt on our way to school, leave the guns with the principal, pick them up later and hunt our way home.

It’s not the guns that are the problem. It’s the irresponsible, criminal, and sometimes insane people who use them.

The former two are a large part due to the moral decay of our society, and the latter in part due to Big Pharmas drugging of our children.

Do a search and see have many of the recent mass shooters were under the influence of some sort of prescribed mind altering drug.

A friends child had some behavior problems at school and the school insisted on Ritalin, rather than discipline. Easier to drug the child than address the problem…….How many kids in Pittsfield schools on these drugs?

I’ll add in the medias cavalier portrayal of firearms and the lack of gun safety training.

We learned as children guns were not toys and if we touched one we would get can of Whoop Arse. Our parents never had them locked up.

When we exhibited some responsibility we were taught gun safety and marksmanship. Eventually hunting, and then owning our own firearms.

My how things have changed.

You have to laugh at some of the reasoning in Pittsfield politics. The Charter now allows for the Mayor to serve a four year term, the reasoning in part, is that four years wold be enough time to get something accomplished. I look at it the other way, you give them a extra two years, for four years of nothing accomplishment. I am telling you and I’m not the know it all on here, but Tyer is bad choice, she’ll will tax us to the max, and seal the City’s future down the toilet.

None of these comments deal with the Planet’s contention that JIV should be fired because of lying about the loaded gun. I think that this is a serious question and the board should take it up. If a school superintendent cannot accurate inform parents about the risk that their children face, should that superintendent keep his job? My answer is with the Planet, NO. The superintendent is not a salesman for the school district but the CEO who is primarily responsible to the tax payers and especially parents who are tax payers. If the CEO lies to parents they need another CEO.

Discreet,
Remember that Bianchi is the one who changed the charter, with the council’s blessing, to increase the mayor’s term to four years. Bianchi is also the one who wanted (and got) pay raises for all the dept. heads – and then some – at City Hall. The mayor’s base salary was also increased beginning with this next election!

So the kid said he had the gun for his own protection. He was not going to use it on anyone.
As misplaced as this is, does anyone think that these school shootings has no effect on the mind of a 13 year old student?
There must be the feeling in that young mind that the administration is doing nothing to protect him.
The media is milking these stories for all its worth and these kids are running scared. As wrong as it is, he took the matter into his own hands. Has nothing been said about the kids? Lets get their views on the subject. Sure, the super has to go and dicipline the parents but in the end it’s the kids who suffer. They can guard federal buildings with metal detectors, it’s time to include the schools. The wrong approach, no, I don’t think so.

That’s an interesting thought. Maybe this kid was really scared of a school shooting and felt carrying a gun was protection. Everybody assumes he had a sinister motive, but maybe it was fear that motivated him to bring this gun to school. It still doesn’t make it right, but maybe all the media attention on the school shootings is making some of these kids afraid to go to school. I still don’t know where he got the gun in the first place though.

OK so the debate wasn’t what I expected and that cheap shot Tully took at me was not only immature and foolish but a waste of a push for people to vote. I am what I am and will never conform but I would never waste a chance to get someone to vote. The only thing she had was for my business which is still on an appeal and my FU nation.
I have 2 years against her and the foolishness and the lack of representation for the ward and the city. I wanted so badly to say something but if anything I proved to myself that I can conduct myself properly in public unlike her. Her nice little leak in the papers helped me out in the first place so hopefully this will too. I have several comments I have to share,so hopefully a reporter will contact me.
I guess her only defense was desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s too bad we couldn’t debate on real issues that matter to residents. Instead we had to wait in line for everyone else.
