THE KINNAS EFFECT: WRITE-IN CANDIDACY SHAKES UP THINGS IN WARD 4 … plus … THE COMMENT LINE IS OPEN

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEEKEND EDITION, OCT. 23-25, 2015) — Last night on PLANET VALENTI TELEVISION, Supercitizen Terry Kinnas helped relieve some of the wearisome monotony of the campaign season by declaring his write-in candidacy in Ward 4, opposing the incumbent Chris Connell.

Kinnas and Connell came on the show about halfway through, and after some questions from THE PLANET, we turned over the show to them. The ensuing discussion featured give-and-take far more interesting than anything thus far generated in this stodgy and monochromatic campaign. It was as much how they said it as what they said. Body language says a lot. That’s what we’re hoping for next week when Dan Bianchi and Linda Tyer meet for the final time. You’re going to see these two people in a way that none of the previous forums have allowed. They will be caught in the act of being themselves, as Allen Funt used to say each Sunday night on CBS.

Kinnas is dead serious about his write-in attempt, a long-shot to be sure. Family matters this summer prevented him from pursuing the traditional avenue to office. He was flying back and forth from Arizona so much that, based on inside information, THE PLANET bought heavily into Southwest Airlines.

Ca-chinga!

Kinnas Serious; Connell Surprised

All seriousness aside, though, as Steve Allen used to say, The Kinnas Effect bears watching. THE PLANET will lay our Davy Crocket iron-ons at the pas line in betting Kinnas beats the vote total of the two failed mayoral candidates in the September prelim. He might even top their combined total.

The question has already come up: How come you had Kinnas on “debating” Connell when you won’t have either of the two failed mayoral candidates from the preliminary, each of whom, allegedly, have declared “write-in” status. The answer is simple. The two collapsed candidates qualified for the September ballot. They presented their cases before the entire city, and they flopped. They bombed, being smacked down so low by voters that only their buttons got in the way of “lower.” The voters already had a chance to elect them and decided, decided 98 to 2, not to avail themselves of either.

Connell objected to Kinnas’ write-in attempt, initially calling it “illegal” in an earlier phone conversation. It was a casual, careless usage, but THE PLANET doesn’t believe Connell meant it literally. A write in candidacy isn’t, of course. State law provides for such a campaign. Connell said he preferred the “traditional” manner of getting on the ballot. He sees it as more “legitimate.” Later, he sent the following definition: “Legitimate according to Webster’s dictionary also means ‘conforming to recognized principles or ACCEPTABLE rules and standards.’ Thats what I inferred. We take our right honorable good friend at his word, but THE PLANET understood  his reaction to Kinnas’ 11th-hour move move as worry (perhaps even anger). Connell had been unopposed on the ballot and otherwise up until last night. The change in status seemed to fluster him.

Choice is Always Good

Thus, voters in Ward 4, attention. You now have a choice. For your information, a “write-in” vote is just what it says. When you go to the polls, you simply write in the candidate’s name in the space provided. It is tallied by hand, and should the write-in garner more votes than the candidate on the ballot, the write-in wins. Chances of that this late in the game aren’t good, but THE PLANET supports any effort to increase voter choice, especially from a candidate such as Kinnas, who truly is one of the champions of Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, The Little Guys.

With that news, allow THE PLANET to share a poem and after that open The Comment Line. This is a love poem by the “scandalous” D. H. Lawrence:

DECEMBER NIGHT

Take off your cloak and your hat

And your shoes, and draw up at my hearth

Where woman never sat.

I have made the fire up bright;

Let us leave the rest in the dark

And sit by firelight.

The flickers come and go.

I will warm your limbs with kisses

Until they glow.

Very disappointed that Councilor Connell would call it illegal, the right to vote is one of the most precious rights we have. When we the people suffer the loss of the right to self govern ourselves all is lost. Good luck Mr. Kinnas in your quest.

Dear Dan Valenti, I applaud you giving Terry Kinnas the opportunity to debate Ward 4 councilor Connell on your show last night.

You should now extend the same courtesy to the Wizard and include him on your upcoming televised debate. Allowing Gaetani will insure a city wide viewing audience. A forum where by the three candidates debate each other was what the Wizard was hoping for before the primary. If this debate was to occur Mr. Valenti would not have to ask any questions. The Wizard will take control and all will see that he is the best candidate by far – no question about it.

We need to elect the right person and Gaetani is without a doubt the best person. You yourself said that the Wizard had the best campaign, continually pushing for relief for the taxpayers.

If Bianchi or Tyer object, or if you don’t invite the Wizard you may just as well cancel the debate as no one wants to hear anymore GOB and SIG talking points.

I was made aware that yesterday someone tried to post positive comments regarding the Wizard and their comments were redacted. It sometimes seem fishy that comments involving Gaetani are not allowed. I hope that all posts be given consideration so that we may see a free flow of ideas.

I look forward to seeing comments again from Mr. G.. I just like fairness a a good flow of ideas. Diversity of ideas is what’s interesting. The Wizard would love to get a call inviting him to the debate. It was fair for Kinnas it will be fair for Gaetani.

I think Nota would enjoy seeing Gaetani confront Tyer and Bianchi on issues that neither one has addressed in this campaign.

Eye, I am one of those who is nauseous having listened to way too much Tyer and Bianchi spin. I do not trust either one of them to do anything they say anyway. Bianchi just had 4 years to prove his worth and failed miserably. He thinks if he does a lot of stuff in the last two months everyone will forget who he was in the 46 months before that. Not me! And I believe Tyer is just the face of the Ruberto machine that raised taxes through the roof for his 8 years while special folk seem to have done quite well.

I am going to write in for somebody and it will not be either of them. I get a yucky feeling when I hear either of their voices. Kind of like when I see rats.

How many municipal employees are suing Mayor Dan Bianchi? Pittsfield police officers Mark Lenihan and Chris Kennedy. Former Veterans Director Rosanne Frieri. At least 3!
How come Rosanne Frieri wasn’t treated the same as William Monterosso? How much money did William Monterosso and his Attorney Andrea F. Nuciforo, Jr. receive from Mayor Bianchi’s settlement?
What has Mayor Dan Bianchi accomplished in his nearly 4 years running Pittsfield politics? Crime is up with multiple shooting murders in Pittsfield. Taxes are way up. Sabic is moving to Houston, TX, while Pittsfield will lose about 300 good jobs. Pittsfield’s tax base is shrinking, while Dan Bianchi bet it all on a new Taconic High School.
The lovely Linda Tyer is part of Jimmy Ruberto’s political machine of Good Old Boys that ran Pittsfield further into the proverbial ditch. If the lovely Linda Tyer wins the mayoral election, she is going to owe political favors to Jimmy Ruberto’s notorious group of Good Old Boys.
The lovely Linda Tyer wants to spend even more money than her opponent Dan Bianchi and her mentor Jimmy Ruberto combined. She will add more gravy than ever to the G.O.B.’s gravy train of special interests.
All Pittsfield politics was, is, and continues to be is 2 political factions (Del Gallo, Doyle, Ruberto, the lovely Linda Tyer versus Wojtkowski, Sara Hathaway, Dan Bianchi) that both serve the same political master: The Massachusetts Democratic Party in Boston. The lovely Linda Tyer and Dan Bianchi both call themselves progressive Democrats. Pittsfield politics is a one party system like China.
No matter who wins, the Pittsfield taxpayers lose!

Dan,
I don’t see why you do not just let Gaetani participate in your debate. What real difference will it make? I understand your reasoning (I really do) but im sure the poll #’s would been closer without the ever so convenient case of his.
From my understanding of this site its for the ‘little guy’ so why not give him a ‘fair shake’ where the city did everything to keep him out.
II know he is a shot in the dark at this point in the game but I believe he did have a good chance of being legitimate candidate before all that mess. The man tried hard and should be at least thrown a bone.

So Dan I ask of you to let Gaetani participate. He deserves that much. If anything to drive Tyer/Bianchi crazy. It would make good tv.

Terry you have my vote. We need you on the council to keep an eye on the cookie jar!
Linda Tyer – instead of promoting govt-run preschool which would put a lot of local preschools out of business – why not look at re-creating the “gifted student” program in the elementary schools, a program which was eliminated in the early 1980’s by the “dumming down education” crowd? Consider running a pilot program for those students who are ahead of the curve, at Williams elementary. I bet the school choice crowd would flock to public schools which offer extra attention to over-achieving elementary students!

Attn I’d like some input if you all think this idea is possible

What if the city made room in the budget to start some sort of profitable business? Anything past normal business expenditures(payroll, supplies, etc…) could then be used for the city for whatever is needed.
As far as what type of business, city officials could collaberate to figure out what could work that would not affect any existing businesses(possibly compliment) and make the most profit possible.

This in turn I believe would at least be a start to attack 3 major city issues.
More Jobs
Lower Taxes
Increased City Revenue = Larger Budget

We have the land, the workforce and the need!
Why not invest in ourselves?

Any input would be appreciated

If it is owned by the city I would say no, but a community owned business maybe. Instead of just forking over tax dollars, the public can buy shares of the business and if the business succeeds recoup some of their investment. An example of a community owned business on a big scale is the Green Bay Packers. There are over 350,000 different share holders.

I think an example, on a smaller scale, if I’m understanding what you’re proposing, is the Old Creamery in Cummington. http://www.oldcreamery.coop/
A few years ago the owners decided to sell it. Several residents didn’t want to take the chance of losing it so they proposed turning it into a coop. There is a link on the site explaining how membership works.

No, not an excellent idea. Entrepreneurs start businesses. Governments govern. With the shape the city is in fiscally, what on earth would make anyone think they would be great at running a profitable business? The GE settlement money was supposed to be there to…invest in business, right? And what investments have they made so far that have been profitable? My company creates and publishes content. We’ve been successful at it for over 20 years. They have, unfortunately, not invested in growth and outreach for some time. Growth would bring more revenue, and more profit would follow. Instead, my company is thinking about starting a store!! Invest in what you DO, don’t look at someone else’s grass as greener. As I have pointed out before, the “incubator model” has worked elsewhere in the region. The city is neither entrepreneurial, nor venture capitalist. Keep the roads plowed, the streets safe…and let the professionals handle the businesses.

Ok you say they have tried and failed. Not a reason to give up on such a prosperous venture. Many things in life dont come at the snap of a finger. Instead, approach differently such as a different venue(type, location, ) , a different marketing approach or hire an unbias professional consultant(city employs enough unneccesary people as is). There has to be a way to make such a thing work.

I find these 2 respective news articles to be interesting because Dan Bianchi didn’t practice what he now preaches about showing up for debates. The lovely Linda Tyer should take notice of Dan Bianchi’s double standard of “extreme disappointment” against her for not showing up for a debate!

Article one.

“Pittsfield Mayor Daniel Bianchi ‘disappointed’ challenger skipped TV debate”
By Jim Therrien, The Berkshire Eagle, October 23, 2015

PITTSFIELD – With no challenger to debate, Mayor Daniel L. Bianchi answered questions in a one-on-one format on Friday afternoon at Springfield television station WWLP-22News.

“Today, I participated in an empty-chair debate at 22News,” Bianchi said in a prepared release. The mayor said he was “extremely disappointed” in City Clerk Linda M. Tyer’s decision not to take part.

Mayor Ruberto today challenged Dan Bianchi’s decision to not attend the Chamber of Commerce debate scheduled for October 28 [2009]. Bianchi’s campaign had cited a “schedule conflict.”

I was kind of shocked by the article in the Eagle this AM, submitted apparently by Mr. McCandless the Supt., that talked about the “intent” of the kid with the gun at Herberg. In it, he said there was no evidence of violent intent. I would counter that bringing a loaded hand gun to school is ALL the evidence one needs of violent intent. Is there any evidence that there was not violent intent? Why are they trying so desperately to minimize what is actually a pretty big deal? It started with the “small caliber” assignation of the weapon, then the lie that it was not loaded….not they have read the perpetrator’s mind! Also, in the minute by minute recap of the incident provided by the principal in the story, there is NO mention of the mayor being there within minutes to take charge of the situation. See that’s the problem with telling lies; it becomes difficult, but absolutely necessary to remember everything said previously so as not to contradict it going forward.

I will be voting for Tyer. I was a strong supporter of Bianchi in the past, and while I don’t dislike him to the extent of some of my friends, the move of City Hall staff to 100 North St. did it for me.

1) I don’t believe it was necessary.

2) I believe it should have been brought to the City Council for their approval.

3) Supposedly the owner of the building is a close friend of his. And that could play a big part in the decision.

4) The large amount of taxpayers money for the entire move including renovations and the continuing amount each month for rent.

Government cannot run a successful for profit business. Being the government has the power to tax the people. It will end up putting do nothing connected people in cush jobs. Taxes would go to subsidize the failing business.

At one time, city workers used to pick up the garbage. They realized that putting it out for bid to a private company was far more efficient than city workers doing it. Take Collingwood please, as an example.

Look at the postal system for example. Its a mess. Its a monopoly (except for packages) run by the federal government. At one time the postal system had a surplus of over 4 billion dollars. Reagan took that money out and spent it, effectively bankrupting it. They never recovered from that. Its the fact that they have the power to tax the people that keeps the mail going. The private sector would do it much more efficiently.

The lottery was put in promising to pay for the schools and the roads. Where does all that money go? The state of Illinois no longer pays out the winning money but issues IOUs to the winners.

Any money the government takes in, they spend. Your social security is not invested and paid back to you with interest. That’s not how it works. Every penny you have ever paid to SSI has been spent. The people working now are supposedly paying into the system to cover retirees. Again, taxes make up the shortfalls.

The apollo program: scrapped. The space shuttle program: scrapped.

Bottom line is government has no place running any kind of business. Although a noble idea, it does not work.

In today’s BB, there is a story of a woman arrested in car break-ins. The police declined to release her name. WHY?

What’s going on here? How and why do they decide which criminal’s names will be released and which won’t?

Probably connected. Its not what you know but who you know.

Remember the unnamed businessman who was giving kickbacks to a Greylock Credit Union official? Did they ever name him? Nope.

You try breaking into cars or giving kickbacks, get caught, see if they keep your name out of the paper. Its a good old boy club and you ain’t in it.

Just pay your taxes, keep quiet and continue to vote in tax and spend progressive liberals.

Thanks, Ed! I wonder what connection she has, if any. Strange that they don’t hesitate to name those involved in DUI’s, assaults, etc.

Something smells rotten here. Why is she being protected?

Eagle probably got the story off the PPD Facebook page. They do not list names there. Investigative reporting at it’s best.

If they’re not release a name, she’s gotta be “connected.” That’s how it works in Corruptfield, Mass.

There was 14-15 posts from ‘eye in the sky’ there and now gone. One was actually a respose to a prior post of mine.

But for whatever reason some do remain

After viewing this blog and watching a few shows on 16 I am very worried about the future of this city. I’m considering selling my house while I still can. The future doesn’t look good here.

Pats win this one going away….purrrrr”

Hey Cat, Pats won it but not going away. Have you noticed recent weeks of Pats games. They have won but there is a message here. They are not blowing opponents away. Kind of like our mayoral contest. Don’t bet on it. Anything can happen. Back to the Pats. Brady and Gronk remain at the top of their game, but they won’t be undefeated this season and they won’t be Super Bowl champs. They won last year only because Pete Carroll approved the most stupid play in the history of pro football. Carroll has not and will not recover from his disastrous approval of a pass play when a jr high qb would have called a run, especially with a beast of a running back who would have guaranteed a one yard gain and a Super Bowl Championship. Back to the Pats. Don’t bet on them for a Super Bowl Championship.

The Patriots won the SB last year because Brady was lights on in the 4th Q. They won’t go undeafeated but they will win the SB again…

Silence, It sure looked like it. Sometimes I think the refs on the field are worse than the “expert” announcers telling us what is happening on the field.

Patriots are good year after year,it is what it is ..when the Jints had super bowl teams with Parcels it was Belecheck that designed the defense..Cleveland made a mistake letting him go..
