WINNING FROM CAN’T LOSING: $475K GRANT WON’T MAKE SQUAT IN PITTSFIELD SQUALOR

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THURSDAY JUNE 2, 2016) — Have you ever entered a contest knowing you would win? For example, you are the only contestant in a 5K road race for those over 80. You have to finish first. Or for a more familiar example, how about playing youth sports, where everybody gets a trophy? You don’t have to be good at the game. You just have to “participate?”

That will give you some idea of the recent award won by the city of Pittsfield. It’s harder not to win than to win.

‘Collaborative Leadership’ … and More Balderdash

The office of mayor Linda Tyer announced that Pittsfield “will receive $475,000 in the second round of the Working Cities Challenge, a competition for smaller cities in New England focused on building collaborative leadership, which is shown to be a critical element in economic growth for struggling postindustrial cities.

“The five communities put forward initiatives focused on neighborhood revitalization, workforce development, and improving access to economic opportunity. The cities will work on these initiatives over a three-year period, accompanied by technical assistance and a learning community for best-practice sharing.”

That’s the language of the first two paragraphs of the press release, which the Corner Office forwarded from the offices of the Boston Fed. These two teaspoons full provide a good enough sample of the entire bowl of mush. When you get into phrases such as “collaborative leadership,” “put forward initiatives” and “best-practices sharing,” you know guano has hit the blah-blah-blah.

The Boston Fed did not provide the funding. The Fed did not serve on the jury. All it did was front for the credit, and that was the Boston Fed Prez taking a bow in the spotlight, as if he actually did something.

From the press release:

“I want to congratulate the winners of the Working Cities Challenge. Collaborative leadership is at the heart of this competition, and these five cities demonstrated significant capacity to reach across sectors and advance efforts on behalf of low-income residents in their communities,” said Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren. “I look forward to following the progress in the communities in the coming months and years.”

“Together with our partners in the private, philanthropic, and non-profit sectors, we are proud to leverage greater resources to support and prepare communities for success,” said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. “The Working Cities Challenge elevates local leadership, amplifying solutions from the community level to increase cross-sector collaboration and improve economic outcomes for low-income residents.”

Allow THE PLANET to translate. The key words here be “on behalf of low-income residents.” In other words, Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, you got hosed once again. You work your butts off to arrive at and stay in what’s left of the tattered, battered middle class. Tough. This money won’t be for you.

So where is this money going, exactly?

Here’s what the gobbledygook of the press release says:

Pittsfield: Pittsfield Bridges: Transformative Movement (PBTM) will support the journey from poverty to sustainability by collaboratively building community resources and removing barriers. The effort’s vision is for all people in Pittsfield to experience a just, thriving, and safe community. PBTM’s goal is to improve individual, institutional, and social fairness and respect in the community and thus to support individuals moving out of poverty. The PBTM’s core team includes: Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity, the City of Pittsfield, the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, Berkshire Community College, BerkshireWorks Career Center, Berkshire United Way, Goodwill Industries, Berkshire Children and Families, Berkshire Health Systems, Berkshire Community Action Council, Downtown Pittsfield, Inc., Pittsfield Public Schools, Local chapter NAACP, Pittsfield Community Connection, West Side Neighborhood Initiative, First United Methodist Church, Heart 2 Heart Ministry, Manos Unidas, Brien Center for Mental Health, Multi-Cultural Bridge, and Girls Inc.

That tells you all you need to know. The “Pittsfield Bridges Transformative Movement.” Remember, THE PLANET didn’t make it up. The PBTM.

Translation: This money will create grants to fund make-work jobs for overpaid executive director types and their flunkies. There will be no accountability, just jobs: a con job and a snow job.

Reality Check: Not a damned thing will change. After the $475K runs out, Pittsfield will be that much poorer, that much more violent, and that much excessively drug-ridden.

Only one thing will lift people out of poverty.

An economy.

.It is a certainty that the middle class and the working poor will not see a dime of this money. It boils down to the State’s SOB’S sending money to our local SOB’S and business as usual. After they gobble up the money -our local SOB’S will be looking for more. Who do you think pays for these shams? That’s right-we the taxpayers. Local State and federal government is seriously broken and it is almost a certainty that a revolution will have to come initiated by the taxpayers. How much longer can we take this bull-shit? Doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. WE MUST CHANGE EVERYTHING AND IT MUST START AT THE LOCAL LEVEL We can make our changes in 18 months. It is do or die. It has gotten this bad.

I enjoyed reading Conor Berry’s news article about Pittsfield and the lovely Linda Tyer’s stand against violent crime.

Dan Valenti was cited and quoted in this story about Pittsfield’s progress versus its realities. Dan Valenti has seen and heard it all before over his years of covering Pittsfield politics.

Mayor Linda Tyer really believes in Pittsfield and she will fight against the lowlifes who threaten the community. While Dan Valenti sees the new Mayor as an idealist who is saying the same things community leaders have been saying for decades.

Pittsfield politics has been part of the problem. Mayor Linda Tyer just proposed her first fiscal year municipal budget with a spending increase of over $6 million, along with a record setting capital budget proposal, the many local taxpayers can’t afford to pay.

Moreover, the budget proposal doesn’t factor in the financing of the new Taconic High School project!

Municipal taxes are too high in Pittsfield! There are no living wage jobs anymore. Sabic Plastics is moving out of Pittsfield within the next year. Hundreds of local jobs will be lost. Pittsfield’s tax base is shrinking!

This may be the best year ever to be a real estate agent in Pittsfield. This budget is going to stop people in their tracks and make them want to look at their options. But there are additional reasons to move out.

A self serving government
Lousy self serving school system
Deteriorating infrastructure
Escalating crime and gang violence
A city in financial distress whose leaders seem to be feeding on the carcass before bailing themselves

Sometimes the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence

Godspeed fellow travelers

Take a look all around Pittsfield. Houses are going up for sale like never before. Pittsfield is in trouble. To echo what others say, Tyer and Ruberto are of the same. Check out North Street and then check out the surrounding streets. Go two streets in either direction and you will see blight, crime and so forth. No wonder why people are selling and then an increase in taxes to boot!

Councilor Amuso is along with school committee Yon are almost totally responsible for our budget problem.Amuso will be fun to watch as she aggressively looks at city departments yet was so smitten with the original superintendent Jake Eberwien who gave us Jake Curtis and Jake Behnke…..Amuso gave Pittsfield all the superintendent s the citizens can enjoy now.
While some cities have cut budgets pittsfield has added superintendant of all kinds…..Amuso is a forevermore Taconic high school project owner121 million project for 900 kids…..She has made a big mess of pittsfield……..Mazzeo did not go .

The only one that ever even considered looking at line items was Barry and he can’t help us anymore.

Morning Generalities. Specifics to come…. Tyre team rapes property owning seniors and greases pockets of the chosen few.
Tax increases morally should follow the cost of living increases determined by the Feds and given to social security, vets, etc, Fy16 is None, Zsro, De Nada, Zip.
Tyre raises taxes, increases water and sewer fees, THS additional tax, still to come. Moves city closer to insolvency.
Just the beginning folks. Tyre is going to build a new police station. Where and who will sell the property to the city ? The city in turn will sell , at a discount, the current police station to Allegrone for a parking garage for their taxpayer assisted downtown housing like the Howard building, where a former city counciler and a prominent political paramour shack up. Coincidence ? And have you noticed the contactor at the new THS site ? Private jet trips for a Tyre benefactor, perhaps ?
Stay tuned 3,5 more years.

Honestly I would suggest leaving not only Pittsfield and Massachusetts, but the entire Northeast. I have heard from so many people now living in other parts of the country who are very happy with their quality of life since leaving the Northeast. It is so much easier to survive in other parts of the country since taxes are lower, housing costs are lower, and jobs are more plentiful for all levels of education.

I don’t think a sitting City Councilor should be interviewing a Mayor on a student based radio program or any kind of program. If Mr. Gaetani is out there could he please tell us if this a political bias at best, and should this practice be labeled as possibly being illegal.

Dilly- Spoke to the Wiz. It is definetly political bias but it is not illegal. Kroll being a city councilor should voluntarilly resign his position at WTBR. The major problem in this city is that all the media is squarely behimd this administration and all past administrations. If you watch the Wiz’s show he consistently speakes of this. The Wiz feels that all his efforts for the taxpayer will end in vain because the city is filled with too many lost souls who either don’t have the capacity to understand what is going- on or they just don’t care- or both. POLITICIANS RELY ON THIS FACT TO BECOME VERY POWERFULL AND PULL THE WOOL OVER THE TAXPAYERS EYES IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. Consider this site-Many intelligent posters and some idiots. We had no affect in any of the past elections and will only have an affect if 10,000 citizens join the Non-Gobsig network. What chance do you see of that happening? If it did happen -the city could be turned around over night. On another topic–Look what AMUSO and Siminolli are doing– pandering to the taxpayer- that they want to cut the budget. They are the ones more responsible than many others for runaway spending which they approved. They know that they may be vulnerable in the next election but no where in the media will you get the discription the Wiz just gave. Result-They will be re-elected. We need to all pray that the Wiz can kill the THS Project. If The taxpayer can have an affect – it might start a revolution in the city that any taxpayer can initiate change. The suit is in the courts hans now and of course we all know about the courts-Don’t We? The important thing is that he TRIED TO HELP THE TAXPAYER. Now watch how shakes will reply. He and those like him are the problem.

That’s a good question. Could be the first addition to the already staggering price tag. I think that the time slots that Mr. Krol and Mr. Sturgeon occupy should be offered to students at BCC. BCC students shows would be on air while Taconic Students attend class and Taconic students take over when school is let out.

There are two articles this morning about immoral, and unethical involvement……. One, a Pittsfield Captain in the Fire Dept, who was more interested in his personal status, and the Williamstown Couple involved in a hit and run that left a woman unresponsive beside the road. They lied to the Police and tried to cover it up.
None of these people are young. This is absolutely sickening. All of them are entitled, and think they are above the law.

Question Marky

Noticed that the Pittsfield Fire Dept. captain who is facing serious firearm and assault charges, resides in Hinsdale. Is he a neighbor of the mayor’s director of whatever (Ms. Dewes), who also lives in Hinsdale ?
When is the secret question going to be answered regarding where (again, no names, addresses or otherwise identifying data) Pittsfield city employees reside ?
City taxpayers are simply suckers to graciously continue to support and give fat raises to out of towners, while constantly getting hammered with tax and fee increases.
The mayor in her trained response and scripted statement again answered no comment, I can’t answer that question.Well, maybe she was again simply reading word for word off a prepared script written by someone else which is her standard procedure.

$475 K I believe will go for pay increases for the people at the top and some small amount will find its way to the bottom. If I am wrong then the Mayor should have another press release telling just who got what.

If there are people on the council who are not in favor of the Mayor budget [and I hope there are] then don’t say a thing unless you are willing to fight for it don’t just put on a show.

Before the Mayor starts putting more people in police training look into what some southern states do use the sheriffs for patrol and to back up local police. Sheriffs in the south are much more active in local communities.

Yes, the city and the whole region have huge problems. However the only solutions that seem to come from the Planet’s supporters involve having the last person to leave the county shut off the lights. So, how do we turn the city into a strong, viable, sustainable community? And you can’t say bring back the GE, because that’s not happening.

So how exactly do we tell if the the “Pittsfield Bridges: Transformative Movement (PBTM)” is successful at supporting the journey from poverty to sustainability? I know what poverty is but what is “sustainability”? What does “support” mean? Is recording the journey “supporting” it? Or maybe support means to be a cheerleader and encourage people to go to work. What does the word “journey” mean? Growing income? Walking to work in a sustainable fashion?

The Planet is right that when you see language that touts poorly defined and poorly measured goals the result is going to be a waste of money. But its only $475,000, it could be more.
