PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY AUG. 8, 2016) — Today THE PLANET dishes up two items of interest, the first local and the second local, regional, national, and international — one that journalists deal consistently.

1. LETTER SUPPORTS CONNELL: ‘NOT A TYPICAL POLITICIAN’

I am writing this letter to express my support for Christopher Connell, who is running as an Independent for state representative.

It is unusual for me to write in support of a candidate, as I tend to be skeptical of politicians who too often are in politics for power and to promote their self–interest. I can tell you first-hand that Chris is not a typical politician.

Chris became my first friend in the area when I moved to the Berkshires 8 years ago. Chris wasn’t in politics then. I met him playing basketball at the Pittsfield YMCA. Basketball reveals character.  Chris was the ultimate gentleman on the court and looked to pass to teammates rather than score himself. Over the 8 years I have known Chris, I have observed that he is concerned about the success of others.

My business struggled during the financial crisis and even though we had just become friends, Chris took the time to listen to my problems and offered me helpful and creative ideas that made a difference. I was so impressed his business experience, from being a regional manager for Cumberland Farms, a contractor, and a rental property owner/manager. His wealth of experience enabled him to see solutions to my business challenges that I had overlooked.

When I learned Chris was running for city council 4 ½ years ago, I became interested in local politics. I have observed that Chris works hard to listen to people and get things done for them. He is a lot more action than talk. For example, during the last 4 years he has been fighting to get more parking spaces in Pittsfield for the physically challenged.

Chris has collaborated with other councilors to improve the quality of life for those of us in Pittsfield.  Chris is not into party politics. His agenda for running for state representative is to bring needed dollars from Beacon Hill back to Pittsfield.

On a personal note, I have made so many friends in Pittsfield these last 8 years, and I love this town.  With all the companies that have gone out of business or left the region, I worry about its financial well-being. It is not because Chris is my friend that I pray that he wins this election; it is because Chris will work harder than any other candidate to help Pittsfield receive the funding it needs to maintain our infrastructure and create more business opportunities and jobs. —  MCHAEL EITELBERG

2. USE OF UNNAMED SOURCES

“‘The difficulty that WikiLeaks has, of course, is that we can’t go around speculating on who our sources are. That would be irresponsible,’ Julian Assange said in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press. ‘I do think it’s an interesting question, of course, as to who our sources are. But as a source protection organization that many sources from across the world of many different types rely on to protect their identity, and their rights, to communicate the truth to the public. And that’s what we’re talking about here, communicating the truth.'” — From a wire service story.

Assange might as well have been speaking for THE PLANET. In this area and particularly in Pittsfield, sources for investigative new reporting are not hard to come by for any reporter willing to dig, but there is extreme reluctance to go “on the record with attribution.” As a consequence, THE PLANET must rely on official (and unofficial) sources reluctant to reveal their identities out of fear of retribution. In the clenches, local politics is a nasty business, full of spite and pettiness.

Officials who allow themselves to be quoted usually “reveal” nothing more than the pre-sanitized version of whatever story bathes in the spotlight. If the subject matter is important enough, you can bet The Suits have hammered out the pre-masticated bullet points for public consumption. They must be followed lock-step. Ask Tricia Farley-Bouvier. News organizations such as The “New” Boring Broadsheet print the press release disguised as a “news” story. THE PLANET doesn’t do that. For us, the press release or official statement only begins the digging.

Ironically, The “Worse Than The Old” BB has advertised for an “investigative reporter.” If they were serious about enterprise journalism, they would turn reporter Phil Demers loose under the guidance of an experienced, fearless editor who would ALWAYS back him up against the publisher and the business side. However, this sorry rag doesn’t want to upset its wobbly applecart.

TO: THE BB’s NEW INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER

SUBJECT: PRE-FLIGHT CHECKLIST

1. Get prepared for your best stories to end up spiked.

2. Steel yourself for the reaction the first time you Offend The Wrong Official or Big Shot. Your management will sell you down the river when The Suits order it.

3. If you want to to know where the real stories lurk, drop a dime to THE PLANET. We guarantee total confidence.

Draymond Green of the Oklahoma Thunder showed his basketball character in the late May playoffs when he kicked another player in the groin. Pittsfield politicians are rather adept at given the groin kick to the taxpayers and I don’t know that Mr Connell did a whole lot to stop them.

I put on a cup just to watch the city council meetings on TV and I walk sideways if I go anywhere near the mayors office.

Really?

I have a friend that worked for Michael Eitelberg. I say worked, as in no more, because he went out of business. If Connell is such a great business man with great ideas, why did Michael fold up shop? He left that part out of his letter of support.

Connell is a slum lord running on behalf of other slum lords.

most of post here under a pseudonym. this guy signed his. I don’t feel right in questioning his support or feelings, and respect his willingness to put himself out there.

I am not sure I agree with everything he says – and am not sure CC will be a good State Rep. Everyone says they are going to go to Boston to make sure “we get what’s ours”. In fact, sometimes, on a per capita basis – we get more than what’s ours.

It’s the dysfunction of the system that is driving not only Cities and Towns, but the State into bankruptcy. if the money comes from the State or Federal Government, it is still taxpayer money. So if the State designs a system where maintaining schools or doing modest upgrades is not reimbursable – is it any wonder that a local community will choose to build a new school? The problem is, as Pittsfield will find out – the costs NOT figured into the reimbursement formula are what kills the local taxpayer. many other communities have learned that lesson as well.

We need 160 Legislators to go to Boston to not only reform the leadership – but to downsize the Government.

Oh, I just woke up…. that dream seems unattainable.

The Berkshires are a recipient region. More state funding is spent in the Berkshires than is collected here.

I share Mr. Eitelberg’s endorsement. Mr. Connell has been the best of the 11 councilors. He will make an even better state rep. His experience in business (private sector) will be the difference.

I will support Chris Connell all the way to Boston. I invite others to contact him, meet him. You will walk away convinced at cconnell@pittsfieldch.com

I wish there was someone running that I could really get behind. Lots of blah blah but I need better facts than he plays nice on the court.

Connell passes the ball? What a bunch of bologna. Kobe Bryant would make a fine State Rep.

I live in Southern NH and I watch the Boston media’s local news shows. Casino gambling is a big issue in Massachusetts. Medical marijuana is another big issue. Opioid abuse is another big issue. Governor Charlie Baker will not raise state government taxes. The state’s budget is very constrained and faces annual budget deficits around $1 billion. The State Legislature is on break until January of 2017, and they are in “informal session” for 5 months. The State House leadership is top-down and almost dictatorial. Nothing gets done because hundreds of legislative voices are systematically silenced by Speaker Bob DeLeo and Senate Prez Stan Rosenberg.
Berkshire County political hacks are back-benchers in Beacon Hill’ State House. They get rewarded for being bureaucrats and following orders. It is politics of the banal! In Pittsfield politics, the Democrat candidates always wins. The real election is in the primary in September. It is machine politics! There is no democracy in Massachusetts politics!

Jon Melle, why don’t you worry about Southern NH, your comments mean nothing. I’m sure that everything is peaches and cream there.

If he were so dedicated to the City, why was he backdoor politicking to be VP of the council, all the time knowing he was about to announce his candidacy for state rep? No way he can commit 100% to either position. Ward 4 needs a real councilor that is 100% of our attention.

I wish I could afford to live in ward 4.

Its sad that the richest ward in the City has such poor representation. Where is Mike Ward when you need him, not that its his problem.

Someone in 4 needs to step up at the next election.

Pittsfield ma sends 350 kids to school at Allendale on a toxic swamp…..even the planet cant get intellectually stimulated by this.Whos OK with this is ….the 4 fakers of education…Yon..Amuso…Taylor..
Pat Bouvier….Bouvier sent her kids to Lenox and will lose my vote….All councilors should tell the public if their kids are not allowed in Pittsfield schools

The toxic dump next to Allendale was covered by “The Planet” many moons ago. Former city councilor Barry use to rail against the “Hill”. I think they should close it and move city hall there then you would see some chatter about the poisons!! What would the union workers do but to have kids there is alright. I found it interesting we weren’t allowed to fix the fields to play on because the city didn’t want us to dig up the dirt but the kids are allowed to play there during school.

I believe they monitor the air and that is what is required. Barry is in a Community where he will never see a toxic item, nor will heir Mayor.
