PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, LABOR DAY, SEPT. 5, 2016) — THE PLANET here, checking in on your holiday weekend, the last “official” one of the fleeting summer. It’s hard to realize that summer itself has now left the long-passed spring lost in the affection of a fond memory. Sure, we play out the string until the official passing on Sept. 22, but we all know summer 2016 is over. The NFL starts up this week, baseball’s pennant races heat up, The Old Professor returns to the classroom, and the air begins to smell of pumplin spice.
Where did the time go? Ah, we won’t try to answer that immortal and haunting question today. We just want to wish all a refreshing, enjoyable holiday full of love, laughter, and fun. That and to share a couple of announcements you may find interesting.
1.) Summit — Yesterday, THE PLANET and Democrat state senate candidate Adam Hinds had our long-delayed summit meeting, at a secret location far atop a mountainside overlooking the city to keep the prying eyes of the national media out of our hair … so to speak. The joint was so exclusive, it even banned the flies on the wall. To use the diplomatic verbiage Hinds got accustomed to in his 10-year stint at the United Nations, we “had a frank and businesslike exchange, with a mutual expression of views.” In truth, the meeting cleared the air and left both candidate and writer better off than when we first sat down. THE PLANET enjoyed it, and we think we can speak for Adam Hinds much better than his “Committee” in telling you he enjoyed it too! THE PLANET has a full report tomorrow. You won’t want to miss it.
2.) Corner Office Press Conference — Tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in the corner office, mayor Linda Tyer has called “a closed press conference,” the purpose of which is “to hear the story of a proposed candidate (in his own words) for appointment to the Fire Department which has spurred some debate.” The latter phrase, dripping between the words like beads of wax pooling out over a candle stick, refers to THE PLANET‘s column of Aug. 28 (“Controversial Hire for PFD on Hold Because of Push-Back in the Ranks … Fire Fighters Don’t Want Convicted Felon in Dept.“). Obviously, we withhold judgment and suspend commentary until we get in the room and witness what transpires. THE PLANET can preliminarily commend the mayor for the event, which speaks of accessibility and transparency. We can’t imagine her predecessor doing this. It doesn’t mean we agree (or disagree) with the proposal to hire the “proposed candidate.” It simply means that the corner office seems determined to get ahead of the controversy and put this forward with as much “availability” as possible. Whether it puts out an internal fire or fans it remains to be seen.
With those two items, go back to your hots dogs, burgers, and brats. Enjoy the rest of the day day. Back to reality tomorrow.

I am surprised the mayor is letting you in on a “closed” press conference Dan. Try to behave yourself.
And isn’t it a little late for her to be “out in front of this”?
Will she come right out and say that the hiring is not a special political favor to the sheriff in return for another nepotismal hiring?
On a side note….I truly believe that the city would run much more efficiently, to the benefit of everyone, if the best candidates where hired instead of political family and friends. My guess is that many city positions are filled, for all intensive purposes, as soon as someone puts in their two week notice. Everyone has had a job where the bosses clueless kid is put in a managerial position and proceeds to botch up a previously efficient work environment.
Transparency concerning the Mayors vision and 5 year plan on downsizing a shrinking schools student population is in order. How does the Mayor see Pittsfield in 5 years is not yet known. Then again who wants to say they see a 200,000 walmart encroaching on the downtown. The plan to have Tyler street and North merge as a shopping district will be clear as Colonial theatre bookend south street with Super Walmart at the other end. Then again just admit your powerless to do anything about Kathy Yon and department head Jake Mccandless. I guess some department heads have no respect for our Mayor Tyer and can we now add the Fire department head.
Trisha Bouvier believes Taconic High is and will be a economic engine for Pittsfield what other politician believes this.Does Adam Hines believe this or how about Mayor Tyer and Council President Marchetti do they believe Taconic spurred the New Super Walmart moving to the downtown.Does Chris CoNoelle believe Taconic is the key .
How much does Pittsfield PEDA spend on marketing to companies that we have a new high school building going up.Trisha Bouvier is done because she put this project on her resume and now we are stuck building it.Go away Tricia we can’t afford you and your dumb ideas on how to bring business to Pittsfield….Yon,Mccandless believe it too
Was the meeting with Adam Hinds held at the top of Mt. Greylock near the school of Wizardry of J.K. Rowling fame In an area “hidden by forest, cloud, and spell.” Dan V. did say it was a summit meeting and what more perfect place than the summit of Mt. Greylock.
Dan,
I hope Mayor Tyer remembers to bring in member of the Pittsfield Police Drug Bureau, who can shed light on how in-depth Jr’s role was in the drug biz. I seem to recall reading his name a lot back 7-10 years ago (crack selling, guns-the usual teenage fun and games).
Maybe the meeting was at the PPD defunct bathroom stalls with Hinds appearing with his rolled up sleeves and Dan with pen in hand…sic.
On the vict hire, could this be a new collaborative-innovative job hire?…. with a new hiring twist to keep the City from hiring someone who has made a mistake and deserves a second chance.? Did Community leaders get to the Mayor on this one? Problem is, if you open up this can of worms, anyone or just about anyone with a criminal past leaves the door wide open? Better check in with the hiring administrator and City Attorney.
Excellent point. Can you even ask on an application if a person has been arrested never mind convicted? Because one of the most irritating things about the Pittsfield, Mass. city government is that it has separate sets of rules for the connected and non connected. Certain folk can do things that other folk go to jail for a long time for. And that really sucks. Especially if high ranking city officials are right in your face about it.
I think they bypassed the parking clerk person because of something said while having a few pops at a local bar, if that guy can’t apply for a position, no one can.,get real Pittsfield.
Massachusetts State Legislature, big yawn, and waste of money. Time to down size, and streamline. No wonder people are jumping at these puppet positions.
Someone has to keep the eatery”s in business,Joe.
You wouldn’t be a Politician if you couldn’t feather you’re nest.
Jaded view of politicians. Most are trying to make a difference.
I feel politicians start out try to make a difference, then become jaded scum. Not all of course, just most.
Ha.
Possibly the only Politician who made a difference was SIl Conte. Of course, he had the perfect storm with G E thriving and Pittsfield was at his time, a great economic City,as well as Berkshire County. It always comes down to Jobs, jobs create the ability to pay the taxes.
