NOVEMBER HOUSE ELECTION ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND IN SEPTEMBER’s FOLD

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY OCT. 3, 2016) — Last month citizens and voters — at least the few who were paying attention — saw a rarity. THE PLANET speaks of the exact moment a challenger lost any chance of beating a well-entrenched incumbent.

This scarcity occurred at the Pittsfield Gazette‘s primary debate for 3rd Berkshire District house candidates at BCC. Moderator Larry Kratka asked if the city had a spending problem or a revenue problem. The incumbent, Tricia Farley-Bouvier, went first and predictably gave the safe Establishment answer. She said Pittsfield had a revenue problem. Not enough money was coming in to fund the wish list some call “the budget,” she said. She pitched raising taxes. Then came Michael Bloomberg‘s turn. TFB had just given him an opening wide enough for Sophie Tucker.

We waited, breath baited, anticipation gated. Would the youngster fight or fold.”

He folded like Myron Floren‘s accordian. He agreed with TFB.

Game. Set. Match.

To Win You Must Play to Win

In following the party line, Bloomberg raised the white flag saying he wasn’t playing to win.  THE PLANET believes he started out with sincere intentions. As the campaign progressed, however, he failed to separate his views from hers. He became, in the end, a TFB mini-me. Was he playing for the future?

In giving an answer the party biggies could embrace, observers predicted Bloomberg would lose, endorse Tricia, and set himself up for a local political future. In other words, they claimed Bloomberg was “playing ball” for a future position. It’s a sensible plan — if all you want is to feather the nest for a future hatchling. It reminds THE PLANET of the observation made in Orson Welles‘ classic Citizen Kane. Bernstein,  the head of the late Kane’s empire, tells the investigator it’s easy to become rich — if all you want is to become rich. Likewise the safest way to power and money — if that’s all you want — is to cozy up to those with more power and money than you have. Was that Bloomberg’s intention? The 2017 municipal elections will tell.

What does all this have to do with the general elections? Plenty, at least in the house race between TFB and independent Chris Connell. The current Ward 4 councilor can win, but only if he doesn’t follow Bloomberg’s path to oblivion. Bloomberg’s showing tells us there’s a sizable anti-incumbent sentiment. Folks taking an objective look at the five-year incumbent have to be greatly underwhelmed by her time in office. Bloomberg did a decent job of exposing this, especially early in the campaign, before wilting under the pressure.

The Way to a Connell Win

If he wants to win, Connell needs to campaign relentlessly and hit hard, all the while contrasting himself with her. In the debates, he must master the issues and not be hesitant to unload. The electorate is ready for a change. One can sense it. To capitalize, Connell and his team must get out the vote. THE PLANET just told him how. A low-turnout in November guarantees another two-year term for Tricia. A good one, however, and we will see a race.

With a couple of money questions on the ballot, the legalization of marijuana, charter schools, and a white-hot presidential battle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, such a turnout is more than possible. Connell, though, has to pick up the pace and drive the race — that is if  he is serious about pressing his advantages in a way young Bloomberg wasn’t.

The formula to a Connell victory: No let up. Press. Be ever on the offense. Raise and spend money wisely. Make news. Become visible. Articulate a “vision.’ Be specific. Keep her on the run, because she’s going to have every advantage The Suits can give her financially and organizationally. Also, show a contrast. The charter school issue (Question 2) can be Connell’s devastating right hook. She’s against adding more charters. He must be in favor. He needs to calls her out on spending. Pittsfield and the state have a spending addiction not a revenue problem.

The Little Guy has been too long forgotten. If Connell can connect there, he’s got a statehouse job in his future. If not, it’s two more years of the same.

Not a chance – Connell’s a dud and you can tell just by looking at him. Also, he is the wrong gender – the women are going to vote for Faraaway – just as they will elect Clinton.

And why were people mugging cars at Park Square this past Saturday morning to feed the hungry? My taxes already pay for groceries for millions. i wouldn’t give em a nickel and it should not be allowed, and neither should the dozens of Solemen Furniture signs on Merrill road on public property.

Why would a state rep have anything to do with how the City balances the budget?

State rep’s have little to do with a municipal budget. However, Local Aid is a huge issue in State finance. How much do we give back to communities, State tax revenues collected. And, do we accommodate troubled communities more than we accommodate wealthy ones?

It’s a tangential issue, but a real one.

One example: talking refugees certainly cots more to a community. Stockbridge for instance, will take zero, as will Lenox, Dalton, or Gt Barrington. Should those communities have local aid reduced to make up for the increased cost to house, school and provide for the refugees? What about the convenience of not having the needier kids in their schools – dragging down test scores?

So while the State does not finance all of a municipality’s budget, it makes a significant contribution. And when it mandates conditions that cost more, should they dedicate more? And where should that come from? I say from the communities that get off easy.

Sort of. The Commonwealth laws guide the formulaic return of taxes to communities.

There is no revenue problem in Pittsfield. The problem appears to be mismanagement, greed and corruption. It is not going to change or be changed. Smart people move away.

I will vote for Connell, not because I believe he will change anything but just because he is not lying Trish. Her honeymoon in Boston needs to be over.

Connell will never get off the fence. He dodged the Beacon TIF vote because he bought some property from Stanley 9 years ago. How lame is that.

He will weasel his way out of a WalMart vote because he owns property in PITTSFIELD.

Where and when are the debates?

Connell is as lifeless as the guy they dragged out of the lake the other day.

He is nothing more than a washed up Mazzeo and Empty Suit supporter. He gave Carmel a glowing review for the Stockbridge Town Manager position. Everyone knows she is a bully and power hungry wanna-be.

I don’t like Trisha, but Connell? Really? Let’s get real.

Is he even campaigning? Other than a few signs here and there I haven’t seen or heard from him. I understand the Democrats have a stranglehold on media these days. But I’d assume he’d make some face somewhere other than the City Council Meetings.

Maybe he’s figuring he can simply run on his track record and local fame

I live in Ward 4. Had a problem with city hall just a bureaucratic mix-up. Chris Connell straightened it out for me. He’s been an excellent councilor and will make an even better state rep.

Mike Bloomberg

The question was about whether the State is overspending, not the city. We both said no. Tricia suggested the issue was a revenue problem and we needed more taxes. I said that while revenue is needed, it needs to come from economic growth not tax growth. Here is a link to an article on the debate.

What ward councilor is Connell? Whoever is the councilor for the ward that has Alfred street needs to get off his or her ass and push for some road work. The people on Alfred street pay outrageous taxes and that road has been shit for years. Why?

I know that Ruberto spent his road money for other things and I guess Bianchi did as well but geekers just how bad do they have to get before they get on a list.

When you are a Citizen who pays taxes, you should not have to be pissed off year after year because the streets and, particularly your street takes a back seat over and over, and you are told its on the list. Horseshit ! How many times has this come up at the City Council Meetings. Councilor Simmonelli’s Ward was not being addressed, because Mayor Bianchi’s interests were in the highest taxed neighborhoods. Scream until they get sick of hearing from you.

Everybody pays taxes and everybody has crappy roads. It is not “your street” it is the public street. make a list, fund the list. If you don’t care about the education other peoples children get, you can’t expect them to mind how shitty the road in front of your house remains.

our “reps’ are idiots. They complain there is a “revenue problem” yet, things that could actually bring in revenue, such as a medical dispensary or taxed/legalized marijuana are met with roadblocks.

All roads are not created equal. One example is Crane Ave , there is constant speed control while other streets beg for it. Crane ave is always kept in great condition. Let that road go to crap like so many others and speed control won’t be necessary. Say what you will but road work is determined by who lives there and who the people that live there know.

There is no money for road repair because it is all going to those who administer the decisions on whether to fix the roads or not. Could we take a million or two from the North street road beautification and fix a couple of residential roads?

If everybody that was supposed to pay taxes did actually pay all their taxes would there be more money for road repair? I mean if we don’t have money for road repair why are we giving tax breaks to millionaires? Why?

We got another 6 million dollar tax increases and crappy roads. Why?

Instead of a spending vs revenue issue, what about my idea for recreating the old Berlin Wall with big propaganda signs around Pittsfield to stop the losses of population, businesses, and investment capital?

The old Berlin Wall idea for Pittsfield has merit! It will keep anyone from leaving Pittsfield without permission from the Good Old Boys’ bureaucracy. The propaganda billboards surrounding Pittsfield can read:

* PCBs are good for your health
* Raise your children to rely on Social Service programs
* Teen pregnancies are a good thing because welfare is your ticket to the good life
* Pittsfield public schools are the best performing educational institutions in the commonwealth and nation
* Pigs have wings and fly
* Santa Claus is real
* Sacrifice to the cause of the Good Old Boys by paying high municipal taxes
* Pittsfield’s one political party system is a model for China
* Teo’s hot dogs are a nutritional meal
* North Street is a cultural mecca that rivals Paris, London, Manhattan, and L.A.
* Jack Welch takes morning swims in Silver Lake
* Dan Valenti spins conspiracy theories when Pittsfield politics has been, is, and always will be a series of done deals!
