PLANET DESTROYS ‘OUTMANNED’ ‘Q2’ PUBLIC SCHOOL APOLOGISTS … plus … A LITTLE FOTO FUN

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY OCT. 26, 2016) — The element of surprise can be a delight. THE PLANET had to be in Pittsfield yesterday, and on one our various stops some canvassers met us.

“Are you registered to vote?”

“Yes.”

“Do you care about public education.”

(RED FLAGS UP) “Yes,” THE PLANET replied.

Then came the spiel, these moonbats explaining why voting “no” on Question 2 was “necessary” to prevent a”funding disaster” for Pittsfield public schools. Playing dumb, I asked “why” and got an over-rehearsed, droning speech that had as its key point The Big Lie. They said a YES vote would allow more charter schools and “charter schools are not public schools.”

We then asked a question of our own: “Are you employed by the Pittsfield Public Schools.” Answer: Yes, one as a teacher the other as a “paraprofessional,” whatever then heck that meant.

THE PLANET remained civil — then proceeded to mercilessly, surgically eviscerate their argument, point by point, with verse and chapter to back it up. After the slaughter was over, the women near tears at the irrefutability of our logic, we introduced ourselves. At “Dan Valenti,” you would have thought Prof. Van Helsing had shared a mirror and garland garlic with Vlad Drac himself.  The ladies were stunned, and then we told them we would share our little encounter on THE PLANET. If their response could be translated into a song title, we would choose: “A Lighter Shade of Pale.” We left, and the ladies retreated back to their fairy-tale world of fiction and la-de-da.

Ladies and gentlemen: Vote YES on Q2.

The Airport Stare

On the road again … with full focus (PHOTO by Steiglitz)

Most people dread waiting in airports. THE PLANET loves it, especially if were traveling on business, because that comes with “expenses included.”

That means we get paid to sit around in airport lounges and read. Recently, an intrepid photographer in our retinue snapped this picture.

As you can see, we wear the rapt attention of utter seriousness with a focus worthy of an M-Cat defusing a roadside bomb. And what tome elicited such an intense demeanor?

We were reading a book by film director Mel Brooks on the making of his classic film Young Frankenstein.

Hey, at least it wasn’t a book on The Three Stooges, which we purused on an earlier layover that same day.

In truth flying has lost its glamour it and the security precautions are both draconian and underwhelming, but it’s still rapturous to view the play village 40,000 feet up makes of the world.

Fingers in the Mix — and Just Because

Finally, for something completely different as Monty Python used to say, we present this picture, culled from the archives of our stint as a baseball writer. Do you recognize this man?

He’s Rollie Fingers, Hall of Fame relief pitcher with the A’s, Padres, and Brewers. How many remember that for three June days in the centennial year of 1976, Fingers was a member of the Boston Red SoxCharlie Finley sold Fingers and outfielder Joe Rudi to the Sox, plus pitcher Vida Blue to the New York Yankees, for the then-astounding sum of $1 million apiece. The cash deals, however, were voided by the mud-stick commissioner at the time, Bowie Kuhn, a man not to be confused with David Bowie or Roger Kahn.

We love the crispness of this photo, the immaculateness of the red-gray-and-blue uniform, the slanting late-afternoon sun, the mustache. And can’t you practically smell the oiled leather of Fingers’ pack-fresh glove?

In 1976, baseball was unraveling because of the players’ newly won free agency. These 40 years later, the sport has become an afterthought — a lucrative one, surely, but with little more meaning to the American zeitgeist a than an overpriced amusement park or teen action movie.

It’s nice to remember: It Was Once a Game.

Ah friends, it may be ovah for these good  united states of America, but getting there was a ride and a half.

We leave you with a picture of Don Buddin. Why? Because we can.

DON BUDDIN, Scottsdale, Arizona, March 1961.

Did you explain why so much money was coming from New York City to influence a Massachusetts issue?

BART was proposed and negotiated by members of the Williams College community and other locals. What stops other local people from acquiring a charter from the State to take advantage of Question 2? If it passes, and outside players walk in, that’s on us. Call me pro-choice on the matter. If PHS has a better idea on providing quality without endlessly expanding its budget, I’m sure that they will have an audience.

Also, BART faced the Temple Of Doom melodramatic propaganda, in spite of which, Drury still stands, as does PHD and MGRHS. If anything, fewer student should equate with a lighter load on the schools. I’m not sure how paraprofessionals, tutors, and fresh buildings relate to educational objectives.

Yes, Williams College was instrumental in establishing BART. A list of the BART’s BOD reads like a “Who’s Who” of the “movers and shakers.” Go to http://www.bartcharter.org and read the bios of these people. (An Interesting aside is Johnathan Butler, former TOWN MANAGER OF ADAMS, where BART is located and and now CEO of Berkshire Chamber of Commerce is on BART’s BOD, however Mr. Butler is one of BART’s small fish, and he is now connected to BART’s whales. ) But I digress ,the point I want to make is Public Education is what has made this country whole. It is the last true “melting pot.” Williams College connection to the technology community is widely known. Connect the dots Charter schools–eventually on-line education(except for the elites who will always have their prep schools)…end of public education….The 1%ers are slowly “turning the elephant” and Charter schools are their Trojan horse.

I wonder if it’s possible that those that are contributing and are on the BOD’s for BART just might be genuinely interested in the education of children. Is it at all possible that they in their respective places in life, industry and community could see firsthand the importance and benefits of a well-rounded education? Is it possible that but even for a minute to think of how many times we have been asked to “invest” in education to “invest in the future” is it possible that some people have decided that they do in fact want to invest and want their investment to make as big of an impact on the education of children as possible? You know maximizing the money? Being a mere mortal unlike some I cannot prescribe motives to others.
I do encourage the Teachers and their union to work harder to strengthen the product. if the PPS were as great as we are told wouldn’t it stand to reason the Charter school or any school choice program would be inconsequential? A 2 ½ override not necessary because of the high demands for property here in our fair city? Everyone wanting to move here or have their children enrolled in the PPS system?
We give couples the choice to decide if they wish to continue the pregnancy or to terminate the pregnancy are we now saying they make a well-reasoned decision after considering all the implications of carrying to term or terminating the pregnancy that they are incapable or shouldn’t have the choice on how to best educate the child?
This measure is not an assault on the public school system but it is a notice of sorts that clearly states that the public schools are not meeting the requirements that parents and members of the community demand. Any organization would take the opportunity to figure out what they NEED to do to remain viable.

I asked if you explained where the money was coming from. We didn’t hear their side of the discussion and probably never will. All we know is you lit into them and made them cry. Back to the money. Millions of dollars are coming from 80 Pine St., NY to Great Schools Massachusetts (GSM). 80 Pine Street is in the heart of the New York financial district. Wall Street is about money and nothing else. That kind of money is not coming from altruistic do-gooders. If you were on the other side of this question you would be all over GSM, and why all this money was coming from out of state to influence our election.

Support for Question 2 is polling poorly – 52% do not want more charter schools, while 41% do. 6% are undecided.

I think it’s pretty simple to determine why they are involved please refer to their website under the mission heading…”With the commitment of parents and through public policy changes, we envision an America where schools, community organizations and government leaders work together to guarantee a great education for every child. Currently, we serve more than 50,000 families from over 90 schools in New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.”
They do have a Ma Address as well: Massachusetts: 262 Washington Street, Suite 700 Boston, MA 02108
They also have contact information. Have you tried contacting them and simply asking their interest? Or do we simply dream up a conspiracy based upon address? Please advise?

please do let us all know the response they give

Indeed. Nationwide, charter schools are viewed as a scam set up to profit off of children living in underperforming school districts.

In Massachusetts, the cap on charter schools has kept instances of fraud much lower than the national average. Removing the cap will invite the fraud and abuse that have harmed countless children and communities across the country.

Regarding Question 2, the Walton family, Michael Bloomberg, Bob Kraft’s group, and other wealthy donors, have propped up question 2.

For years the Teachers union(s), the City Council, the State legislature, the Congress and yes the President has stated we must invest in public education. Now people do (people who for some reason you’re not fond of) and that’s an issue. If not the Walton’s and the Kraft’s etc. who? The beleaguered taxpayer? Of course the people you mentioned are involved they are doing their part from the call to action the call to invest. They are the ones with the means to invest heavily. Any citizen of this City or state can give Zillions to the schools if they desire. Is it possible the people with money see firsthand the results of the current school system and genuinely want more for the country and communities they call home? We have invested everything we hold dear we have invested our children’s future thus their children’s future is it possible some or many are not satisfied with the return on that investment? Is it wrong to want more and better for the children?

Apparently the beneficiaries of a yes vote on question 2 were all over the city like flies on a pile of fresh shit. Many if not most people do not even know what question 2 is and really don’t go past learning a little bit about the major candidates. So of course this fear mongering by Pittsfield public school employees is going to scare many people into voting for it. I ran into a couple of elderly people who were accosted by school employees and told that it would basically destroy children’s education in Pittsfield.

In life there is the will to survive and then there is outright greed. What we have in the Pittsfield public school system is greed with a capital G. These are the people whose children are knocking down the other kids at Easter egg hunts trying to get as many eggs as possible.

Pittsfield needs a downtown charter school at St joes and St Mary’s property ….it will relieve morningside school and Egremont school and help close PHS.
How can a retired person continue to propel pittsfield teachers to 80,000 a year. This school system is administered by the angry and depressed and extremely unqualified hires of Jake eberwien.

Charter schools are public schools? Ha! Publicly funded, yes, but where is the public oversight? And why does a “public” school have the right to choose which public students will be allowed to attend? Shouldn’t publicly funded charter schools be held accountable to the same standards as public schools? I will vote No on Question 2 until you can convince me otherwise, Dan, and that has nothing to do with Pittsfield public schools and everything to do with the state’s repeated failure to meet its financial obligations to its public school system. I am all for good charter schools, but I am not at all for publicly funding them until the state adequately funds the school system it already has. Public education is supposed to be the great equalizer. While charter schools may help a select few, they actually hurt the majority that are left behind. Where’s the equity in that, Dan?

The schools are only “public” in the sense that they admit all children, but they are controlled by a cartel to generate revenue, the only public oversight is when parents who want their kids to learn something pull them out

It won’t stop. Not now, not ever. This city is screwed financially. Even TFB states, “we have a revenue problem” therefore, more taxes. Because Democrats have ZERO ideas on how to bring in revenue other than taxing the hell out of the constituents in the name of “progress”

So glad that one of the school people approached you Dan V. about Question 2 and you set them straight. I wish I could have overhead that conversation. The city is crawling with people trying to get everyone to vote for their issue and their candidates. Tricia and Hillary are their candidates and Question 2 is their major issue. It’s so liberating to tell them that I’ll be voting “yes” on question 2 and voting for Trump.

Brendan Sheerin needs a new Lexus. He isn’t paid enough to shill for the democratic party and the unions. clearly

I work at a level 2 school right now and we were sent emails explaining how it’s ILLEGAL TO TAKE A POLITICAL POSITION IN THE CLASSROOM, DURING SCHOOL TIME or USING THE SCHOOLS NAME

It was disgusting watching the teachers in the PPS system try to continually push their political agendas on the kids. Despicable.

The district lost 2.something million because people CHOSE TO LEAVE. That’s the districts problem, not the tax payers. All the money in the world isn’t going to fix the system. It’s just going to go into the pockets of the teachers and administrators.

Regardless of your position on Q2, it is an embarrassment that the CC in Pittsfield believes that one their jobs is to endorse or reject any referendum. I am shocked they have not tried to influence the Prez election with an endorsement of Clinton. Attempting to sway the vote is not their job – do we ever see Congress passing a resolution to sway the vote ? NO. From the Charter…”There shall be a city council consisting of 11 members which shall exercise the legislative powers of the city.”
embarrassing that they do it, worse they can’t see it is not appropriate.

I don’t think that Charter Schools are THE answer but they are AN answer. We must give parents the choices to educate their children. Since when has choice been an issue? Please do tell me who knows the dreams, hopes, aspirations and abilities of a child? The Parents? Is it the School system? The teachers union? A charter School is nothing more than an option as is Catholic or private school it’s simply being made available to all parents not just to the affluent. And once again the answer is simple if the public schools perform better than the Charter schools parents will keep the kids in public school. If the public Schools for whatever reason Curriculum, violence shortened school schedule or year don’t meet the needs of the parents then yes they will seek better opportunities it’s really simple it’s called empowering people not Bureaucracies.

I’m definitly voting Yes on question two. It is about giving parents more options. More choice. If we can be pro-choice when it comes to abortion, which involves taking lives, we can certainly be that way for public education.

Vote Yes on Q2. Charter schools around the country are significantly changing education by giving parents real choices for their children. Of course, these schools are not always the answer for educational problems but they are certainly a positive force. When Arne Duncan ran the US Department of Education, he was a strong advocate for charter schools. On their website is a list of studies that show the impact.

Charter Schools send back kids to the real public schools when they don’t meet their expectations. Real public schools can’t do that (nor should they). Check out the suspension rates at BART – 34% recently. Check out the low enrollment in the upper grades compared to the lower grades. Where did all those kids go?
