WHY IS JOHN KROL LIKE U.S. WOMEN’S HOCKEY? SOLVE THE RIDDLE IN THE WEEKEND EDITION

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION, MARCH 17-19, 2017) — We begin this weekend on St. Patrick’s Day and end on St. Joseph’s Day. There’s a lesson somewhere in that, although, spirituality being what it is, we won’t attempt to decipher it. We are not yet ready for the guru thing. We’re saving our Bhagwan gig for Hawaii and the future.

Not that anyone noticed, because if they had THE PLANET would have been called out.  We slipped another pun disguised as a typo in yesterday’s headline. Check it out: We rendered “SNOWFLAKES” as “SNOWFLAKS.” We did so for obvious reasons when you consider what we mean by calling someone a “snowflake” and a “flak” (sometimes spelled “flack”). One clue should have been the John Krol item!

We love JK, seriously. Politically, his time won’t come for another two years, after mayor Linda Tyer calls it a day. Count on Krol running for mayor with an in-place organization, a hefty bank account, and the kind of political ambition that puts stars in one’s eyes. If we had to call the game plan today, we’d bank on the usual:

  1. Say how you believe in the city and its future (convenient, since the future never arrives).
  2. Talk endlessly how you believe in public education (code for placating the greed in the Pittsfield School Department).
  3. Avoid taking a stance on lowering taxes but speak in vague terms about it.
  4. Bank on low turnout. This is the key to all city elections. The vast majority of the electorate — rendered in its helpless state of angst, anger, and apathy — pose no threat if they do not vote. Suppressing turnout elects and re-elects politicos from the same mold: tax-and-spenders who will grow city government on the school side, skimp everywhere else, approve any projects that take care of “Joe’s Brother-In-Law,” and shuts out ordinary citizens.

Collectivism on Parade

It ranks as a pity of the first order, one that would move Gene Pitney to song, that Pittsfield has been hijacked by a tiny but powerful cadre of nest featherers, led politically by the United Educators of Pittsfield, who control mayor, council, and school committee. Each year 1,200 school department employees get their step raises. These come on top of the raises negotiated by contract. The latest pact, as THE PLANET proved, awarded school personnel pay hikes of 16-to-18% over three years. They are now asking for more.

The UP represents unionism at its worst. THE PLANET readily concedes that collectivism made sense in the early part of the most recent past century, when employers held sway, demanding back-breaking toil for peanuts. Union might helped correct the injustice. For a brief period from the late 60s to early 80s, the balance seemed right. In bargaining, both sides pressed, realized that no one gets everything, and managed for the most part to settle equitably. In 1969, for example, striking workers at GE Pittsfield forced to company to make positive changes in wages and benefits that kept the local transformer division profitable and competitive for the next 20 years.

In the mid-80s, however, too many union workers at GE began to take the good life for granted. Stories were told of guys sleeping behind machines or in an out-of-the-way nook on the shop floor … gals putting out for bosses to get the cushy jobs and the fastest promotions … buddies punching time clocks for each other so they could leave the plant and go drinking on company time. Management tried to tell the work force that if productivity didn’t improve, the business would be kaput. The union didn’t believe it. We all know how that one turned out.

Ice Princesses Strike

Speaking of the collectivist folly, have you heard about the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team? The ice princesses pulled out of the upcoming 2017 IIH Women’s World Championship. The tournament is set to begin March 31 in Plymouth, MI. The gals waited until this late date to make their announcement, hoping to catch USA Hockey, the parent organization without options, issuing unrealistic financial demands. With stipends and incentives for medals, the girls could receive $85,000 apiece over the training and performance period (six months). That’s not enough, however.

Fortunately, USA Hockey hasn’t yet blinked. Yet. THE PLANET recommends they hold firm.

The president of USA Hockey, Jim Smith, said, “In our role as the national governing body, USA Hockey trains and selects teams for international competition. USA Hockey’s role is not to employ athletes, and we will not do so. USA Hockey will continue to provide world-leading support for our athletes.”

Smith’s kicker came when he said that strike or no strike, USA Hockey plans to field a tournament team. Practices begin on March 21. You can be sure the alternates have been called.

From John Krol to U.S. women’s hockey isn’t the stretch that it seems. Why is Krol like women’s hockey? Who can answer that riddle? The stage is yours, as THE PLANET opens The Comment Line.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Krol definitely has his sights set on higher office. But can his ambition and self adoration allow himself to go through the mayor penance? I can see him leaping right over a mayor ship and shooting for congress. He has Kelley Anne like spin talent. He can spin and weave a story almost as well as Shaun Spicer. And them”s the critical talents one needs to achieve political office.

It is a rare political candidate who brings ethics, morals and a true desire to make things better to the table. A low bar has been set in Pittsfield so if one is going to live here he needs to keep his expectations low as well.

In Pittsfield they do whatever they wish to do and
John Krol is the Worst Demagogue and Empty politician who can
swing and turn anything around to his end. By the way, he does so using his Psychology degree.
Psychology is the science how to control and change human behavior–that’s exactly what John Krol does.

Edison and Westinghouse along with GE were in the transformer business and each one trying to put the other out of business.
Jack Welch went in another direction. There was nothing unions could have changed. And anyone living in Pittsfield in 1989 watched as congressman Conte died GE no longer needed Pittsfield and this corporation under Welch left us to clean up their corp.waste.If you went to college in this town you went because of the middle class union wage.In exchange for that wage you got cancer and your family got cancer and children got cancer and learning disabilities. Some people forget history.

Gee Dan, I sure hope you are wrong about Pretty Boy Floyd running for mayor. I would never vote for him – he has been a strong vocal supporter of the plan to bring Syrian refugees to Pittsfield. He has been on the city council for a number of years and is responsible for the city’s financial mess – a typical liberal big spender. Does he have a day job? What does he do for a living? I would love to see the mayor’s term of office changed back to a two-year term, which would require the council to amend the new charter. Four years is way too long to be stuck with a dud.

Krol set up what I assume is basically a shell corporation for him to skim money from his cronies by doing “PR” and “media” work.

The worst part about this man is that he is an unabashed supported of Bernie Sanders and socialist government policies (see blindly raising taxes to support your bleeding heart causes without an iota of common sense) I doubt he’d ever have an idea for this city other than continuously, figuratively and financially raping the citizens.

Who is more to blame for Pittsfield’s economic demise:
(a) Jack Welch
(b) City & School Unions
(c) Good Old Boys
(d) Record-setting municipal budgets and debts
(e) All of the Above

I choose (e) All of the Above!

While all good examples of what drove this city to where it is, I would have included the citizens who let these politicians do it . The voters could have changed things when these recycled politicians failed to live up to why the majority voted them in.

Pittsfield politics is a top-down government controlled by the vested interests who vote for the Democratic Party candidates. In fact, I would go so far as to state that one could not get elected in Pittsfield without being a “Democrat”.

There is no wiggle room for real change. Every year, the same two groups or factions of Good Old Boys select their political hacks to do their bidding. Blogger Dan Valenti pointed out that there are 2 factions within Pittsfield Politics. One faction featured Gerry Doyle, Jimmy Ruberto, and the lovely Linda Tyer. The other faction featured the late Anne E. Wojtkowski, Sara Hathaway, and Dan Bianchi. Both factions answer to the same political bosses.

In order to participate in Pittsfield politics, you have to kiss the behinds of the Good Old Boys order. If you speak out against the negative outcomes that Pittsfield politics has produced over the past 4 decades, you become an outsider. You will lose your job and never find work again in the Pittsfield area. You will eventually have to move away from Pittsfield.

Pittsfield politics is all in the family. The Good Old Boys come from multi-generational and low gene pool local families that have held political office for generations. My favorite example of this is Nuciforo. His late-father was a Pittsfield State Senator and then a Probate Court Judge. His late-Aunt, Anne E. Wojtkowski, was a Pittsfield Mayor and a long-serving Berkshire Community College Professor. His Uncle, Tom Wojtkowksi, was a Pittsfield State Representative. Now, Nuciforo is using his family’s Pittsfield political connections to make a financial killing on a “not-for-profit” medical marijuana dispensary on Dalton Avenue in Pittsfield.

Pittsfield politics runs like the mafia. If you don’t kiss these inbred family’s behinds, they will retaliate against you and your family. The Good Old Boys run the show! They have complete control over their community. They can be openly and outrageously corrupt, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

My own personal experience in Pittsfield politics was Nuciforo trying to send me to Carmen Massimiano’s jail in the Spring and Summer of 1998. Nuciforo also filed multiple “ethics” complaints against my dad from the Fall of 1997 – Spring of 1998. From the Summer of 2005 through present, the Good Old Boys spread vicious rumors against me that all I ever did was stalk a Jewish woman from Otis and that I belong in a psychiatric institution. I have heard other mean-spirited things said against me over the years.

It is hopeless and futile to try to change Pittsfield politics for the better! Pittsfield politics is a top-down, Good Old Boy order, and controlled system of government. There is no wiggle room. You either conform or you lose. It is the worst kind of politics that mocks democracy and suppresses freedom. Pittsfield politics is a banality!

School employees demand pay increases each year and so do city hall employees. Both demands are not sustainable or sensible in a poor city like Pittsfield.

I came and stood infront of that line –on the side, wearing my

” Long Live President Donald Trump”.
They were so furious! They bully me and screamed at me!

Hey Koz…have you ever watched a women’s hockey game? Especially at the world level the game is amazing…and also still pretty rough. These women are extremely talented, gifted athletes who, if they are working in service to a national team deserve the same treatment as their male cohorts. The market will determine their total value, and the nascent women’s professional league will pay them only what they can afford based on the league’s success so in the open market it still won’t be great but in service to the country they deserve the same treatment.

While I’m on it Dan, I could not agree more with your take on unions having, in many cases, outlived their usefulness. Thanks.

I hate online shopping especially for clothing. The upper class in the area will just continue going to Holyoke Mall or one of the malls in New York as they have always done or order online which is so hip to do now. This isn’t an option for many people. It’s so much fun walking around these stores and going with friends. So sad that people just want to sit in front of their computers and hit keys rather than wanting to walk around and do their shopping.

If the writing is on the wall for shopping at stores and malls, why not adapt and push Pittsfield as a great spot for distribution centers for companies that sell online. Push the things that the companies really would look for in a location such as we are about 125 miles from both Boston and New York City. Close to Hartford and Albany. There is rail access along East St.. Push Pittsfield as the Center of The North East.

It’s a great Idea however the tax liability here in the Commonwealth would be crippling.

However we need to think along the lines of what else can be done. We must face the facts that the BRPC laid out in the 2050 study. We are facing a decline of population to approx. 85k as well as that population aging. We need to start managing the decline

Dan I just read your article in the latest Berkshire Courier regarding the financial precipice of Pittsfield city finances. Though this administrations seems to find money to throw in every other direction it will find none for a forensic audit. Too many bodies buried in the books perhaps?

Also, are there federal cuts coming down the pike which may add to the city’s financial woes? Are the budget folk taking this into consideration before they finalize our new money sucking smackdown of the taxpayers? Or will they continue to play hop scotch on the backs of the very citizens they were elected to watch out for?

So since I’m fresh out of this mysterious article, what fraud is alleged? The City already pays for one audit, why should taxpayers pay for another if there is no fraud. And if there is fraud, it should be turned over to the proper authorities.

Again, forensic audit is as meaningless in this context as US-German trade agreements are in 2017.

The Berkshire Mall is in its death throes, and we will all mourn its passing but the stark reality is, as we’re reminded here nearly daily, is we are not exactly in a growth area here. Business will continue to fail and/or move away until something is done about jobs. No place can support itself with retail as its sole industry, and the retail/tourism combo is generally less than lucrative for the citizenry. Part of the problem is, manufacturing jobs are not coming back. Regardless of who is running PEDA, that huge brownfield area will look just as it does today in 20 years I’ll wager, + or – a WalMart.

The Mall however offers a different opportunity for someone. Those types of buildings lend themselves nicely to conversion to call centers, server farms…any number of more 21st century industries. Check RackSpace’s original headquarters near San Antonio; converted mall. Great employee parking, decent access, keep the target and the movie theaters there…could be done. The powers that be need to think differently and start trying to do business development in industries that make sense.

Not enough foot traffic in the mall is supposedly the problem although every time I went to Penneys, the place was packed with customers. Somebody from Lanesboro wants to buy it. It was in iberkshires today and turn it into a multiple use destination. Keep plenty of retail though as this area needs it.

I love going to the mall because unlike most places in Pittsfield there is tons of parking, plenty of open spaces where you don’t feel claustrophobic from everybody jammed in together. Compared to Pittsfield, it feels like freedom. It’s a great place to walk to get exercise inside and outside the mall. This mall has to be saved!!!

Why doesn’t the city of Pittsfield buy it and move it to the PEDA site? They have been whining about the lost mall for 25 years and now they have a chance to go back in time and get one.

Only citizens complain about losing the mall to Lanesboro. Local politicians are happy they lost it because North Street merchants have never wanted the competition just like they don’t want the competition for local supermarkets from a Super Walmart. Everything is done with the needs of the merchants in mind not the citizens.

Lanesboro taxpayers are going to be screwed, the rate is even higher than Pittsfield’s, which is past the point of hurting property values, which makes rates go even higher, until most of the real estate becomes worthless like Detroit

Hotel on North is a hotel that locals can’t afford to go to so not sure what that makes it. So many places in Berkshire County that locals can’t afford to go to despite Democrats claiming otherwise.

Despite this area being full of Progressive Democrats, Berkshire County caters to the wealthy. Expensive theaters, restaurants and stores that the average person can’t afford.

I want to get back to the weekend riddle question. Why is JK like women’s hockey? I have an answer, but to be fair I can’t give John all the credit and will include school head Superintendent McCandless, and Peter White, and Nicholas Cacamo to this esteemed list

We’re talking about athletes here, so it is not a stretch to use athletic gear to tie it together.

The answer to the riddle is jockstrap. Here’s why. Our four notables and the U.S. women’s hockey team all have nothing to put in their jockstraps.

Think for a minute. You’ll get it. .

The mall would be a good place to sell cars – could put a few different dealers in there – one in Best Buy, one in Macys, one in JC Penny, and one in the Sears’ spot – because they’re next to fold.

And the PEDA property is what exactly besides a joke? Maybe the new stadium should have went there along with the new high school we can’t afford and don’t need, the carousel, and the new police station we can’t afford, and oh maybe some more affordable housing to go along with the Wal-Mart.

Who gives themselves big raises? Let’s see that would be any Massachusetts politician who feels like it since locals see nothing wrong with anything Democrats do in this state. It’s all good. The Bostons Dems just gave themselves 60% raises, but it’s all good in this area while they bash Trump right and left while their own politicians are out of control. Local media just ignored the big raises issue and intensified their attacks on Trump. At all costs they need to keep peoples minds off of everything the local politicians are getting away with in this area.

I see zero evidence to replace Trump. Is Obama’s shadow government finding fake news to take down Trump? Unbelievable. Of course progressives hate Mike Pence because he’s not a Democrat and you know Dems will not be happy until we have corrupt one party leadership in this country. When do progressives stop being drunk on power and let somebody else lead the country?

What do you call it when progressives want to get rid of a president just because THEY don’t like him, but many people in the country do like him? That doesn’t exactly make progressives likable to a lot of people when they want to try to do something like that. If Trump does stuff that people don’t like, he won’t get elected again. Let the process work itself out naturally without all of the drama.

Where are people going to shop in Berkshire County? All of these ideas of turning the mall into car dealerships (yuck, we have enough of those) or sports facilities (too many of those already) are not good ideas. God forbid somebody suggests pizza restaurants as we have a zillion of those already. If the mall closes that leaves expensive North Street and Walmart to shop for clothing. Not good options for the 60 percent of low income people in the city. Walmart would be okay, but one store to shop for affordable clothing is NOT GOOD and local politicians won’t even allow it to become a Super Walmart.

Progressives figure they are covered since they have no problem with traveling to Holyoke or New York to do their shopping or online, but these are not options for lower income people. Again, where is the concern for the needs of low income people in this area? You know the working class who can’t do a lot of traveling or pay high shipping charges for online shopping?

To sum up, there is just no vision in this area by local politicians to shape this city and county into a place that meets the needs of all of the citizens.

All the places you mentioned especially Lee Outlets are out of the income range of people not working for the school system, city hall, or the hospital which would be the majority of the people in the city who are low income working people. Salvation Army was also closed to make room for a pot dispensary. Many very low income people were able to shop there. A super Walmart not wanted by the city due to competition with local supermarkets and progressives stance against big box stores.
