THERE ARE NO VICTIMS … WE DEFINE OUR OWN TERMS, NOT GOVERNMENT WELFARE OR ‘WHITE PAPER’ PANEL DISCUSSIONS

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND, JUNE 23-25, 2017) — Cultural fashion, Linguistics Branch, has a way of nudging the English language in odd ways. For instance, social progress (albeit progress of a certain sort) rendered the word “gay” (“don we now our gay apparel”) meaningless except for the snickers regarding its former innocent meaning. “People of color,” the current, fashionable word-du-jour for blacks, harkens eerily back to “colored people” of the 1940s.

Whites and blacks have never been comfortable with what to call the hued race, beginning with slavery in the 17th century. They’ve been coloreds, colored people, Negroes, blacks, African Americans, and people of color, to say nothing of the myriad of ignorant terms we shall not repeat here.

THE PLANET does not use these demeaning terms, nor do we respect anyone that does. That being said, they are, in the end, words — abstractions created to label people, places, and things. We might even find the silver lining in the profound ignorance of those who employ such terms as niggers, wops, kikes, greasers, micks, spics, and the lot. Clearly, when a person routinely or otherwise finds fit to keep these in the active vocabulary, we immediately know with whom — the type of “whom” — we are dealing.

When THE PLANET speaks in print, on TV, or on the radio, we are 6’4″. In actuality, when we stand on a piece of thick paper, we hit all of 5’3″ — Mugsey Bogues‘-land. At that, we could take the 5’1″ Napoleon Bonaparte to the post and eat his lunch. We heard our share of “shorty,” “shrimp,” and other salutations of the playground, but we never internalized them. Having two older brothers helped, of course, but not as much as learning how to fight.

College didn’t come with a basketball scholarship. Our hoop “career” came on the courts at Deming and Newell Street parks, the Boys’ Club and CYC, in pickup games. We loved dribbling, ball handling, passing, and defense, working on those to the point, no pun, where we could play what is now called “point guard.” Lots of guys will want to hog the ball to score points. We learned to handle the ball and play defense.

The point is that whatever perceptions others might have of you, whatever Scarlett “A” they try to stick on you, it comes down to the belief in ourselves. We have the ability to rise above external labels,  to go deep within and bring out the fighting response. As Malcolm X once said and embodied, “There is no better friend than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.”

THE PLANET isn’t talking about joining a gang, taking part in a street protest as an excuse to rampage and loot, or employing adversity as an excuse for drug use. We refer, rather, to an authentic, personal response to succeed, to be intelligent, and to take on the personal responsibility to define ourselves. That effort lies beyond all government welfare programs and “white paper” panel discussions.  We create our own “luck,” which is what happens when opportunity meets preparedness.

If we dont understand child labor, womens abuse, slavery and corp power and how wealth was attained and the reasons for unions and worker protections you dont understand progressive thinking and if you have experienced none of these progressive thinking worked for you .

Progressive thinking is out of control. Too many government officials (big government) making up laws because they feel like it not because the laws make any sense. The latest being to target the names of sports teams like the Taconic Braves because it is supposedly offensive to Native Americans. Where does this type of thinking lead? Getting rid of all references to anything here in the Berkshires that refers to Native Americans? To me that is like trying to pretend they never existed in this area so let’s erase any evidence of them and that WOULD BE offensive.

You are so right Pat. As someone of Native American descent, I always took pride in my heritage growing up when I saw that athletes, soldiers and others wanted to be compared to my forefathers for their bravery, determination and resourcefulness. And I found that all of the other family members of that lineage felt the same way. What I AM insulted over, is a bunch of people without a Native American blood-line speaking for us, when we did not ask them too. Berkshire County was the very 1st society in the nation to totally integrate the Native people into their community and even gave them a seat on political bodies. (See Stockbridge). which is why so many of their names remain to this day. Their heritage is OUR heritage, and I will fight to ensure that it is not forgotten.

That’s exactly the way I would feel if my heritage was honored in such a way. As a source of pride to have teams named after them to honor their bravery and courage. It seems that nobody asked Native Americans how they really feel about this.

Those who want to replace all “offensive” team names just had the rug pulled out from under them by the Supreme Court. It was always a First Amendment issue and SCOTUS recognized it as such. The bleeding hearts will continue to try but unless the targets go wobbly, they cases will not succeed in court.

Bernie Sanders stated: ‘Thousands will die’ under GOP health bill!

His solution to stopping Trump and Congressional Republicans is to restructure the Democratic Party, despite the fact that Bernie Sanders is NOT a Democrat!

He would pit the “working families” or 99% against the top 1% or the “corporate elites”. That would be class warfare and political conflict. Bernie Sanders would expand Socialism and place limits on capitalism. It would be a radical change to our political institutions.

On the other hand, Trump and Republicans will cause millions of working families to lose their healthcare insurance in the name of “cost control”. The USA is the only industrialized nation with out a public option for healthcare insurance. Our country spends nearly $3 trillion per year on healthcare costs. As that number continues to rise, it may bankrupt our government.

Universal healthcare insurance has been a political issue for over 100 years since the days of Theodore Roosevelt. In all of this time, there has been no financially sustainable solution by our self-serving politicians who only take care of themselves and their vested constituents!

“The art and cultural economy is a job generator. It is contributing to an economy. It can be a partner in our public schools, it can enliven our downtown,” Mayor Linda Tyer says.

Linda Tyer has continued Pittsfield politics financial problems. She has raised taxes by nearly $8 million since she took office in January of 2016. She has proposed capital budgets that total over $35 million during her tenure as Mayor. That is over $43 million dollars in a community that has a depressed local economy.

Linda Tyer’s statements that the art and cultural economy is a job generator makes no sense! During the 18 months of her mayoral tenure, hundreds of jobs have been lost in Pittsfield. Sabic moved to Houston, Texas, taking 300 jobs with a median income of $70,000 per year with it.

Gerry Doyle and Jimmy Ruberto are Good Old Boys who ran Pittsfield politics into the proverbial ditch!

Speaking of adjusting as a Little Guy, we had a smaller player on the little league team, that really stunk. We had gone o for the year at this point, but had a chance to win one game. The coach had pulled out all the stops and in the last inning trailing by a couple of runs, and actually got the bases loaded with two outs the next batter was a pivotal spot, it was the Little Guy, who ended up walking, the next player up hit a double, and we one the game. We carried the little guy off the field, it was GREAT? We won the game and the little guy was the hero. That Little Guy ended up being some player, his team won the Championship the following year, undefeated and City Hamps.

My least favorite was hide and seek in 40 below zero weather. It was me and my friend against my brother and his friend, one blustery winter day that would numb your toes in twenty minutes,we were playing hide and seek and the opposition proceeded to go up to North street for three hours in a warm building or two while we froze our butts off looking for them, to say the least it wasn’t funny when they came back, laughing, it was cold!
