BAD ROADS SIGNIFY EVEN WORSE POLITICS

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY JAN. 17, 2018) — Minefield. Surface of the moon. Grand canyons. Beirut after the Smart Bombs. Eater of wheel bearings. Destroyer of front ends.

Yes friends, it’s time for a roundup of Pittsfield roads. Calling all Road Scholars.

It’s an odd phenomenon, puzzling to a newcomer, but head out of Pittsfield north or south on 7 or 8, east or west on 9 or 20, and as soon as you cross from city limits to Lanesboro, say, or Lenox, the cratered crossroads give way to miracle miles. The horrid state of Pittsfield roads and streets testifies daily, 24/7, to the true cost of ignorant leadership.

Road maintenance speaks more about an locale’s view of itself than do schools. While the education of Little Johnny can hide behind record spending and shiny, new, $121 million mausoleums that look great on the outside but inside rest the bones of dead young scholars, roads are there for all to see … and to ATTEMPT to traverse. Roads witness to economic health or disease. A city such as Pittsfield, outside eyes would immediately see, doesn’t care about moving goods, services, and people in, out, around, and through with efficiency and safety. It would therefore follow there be a bad economy and even worse politics, especially when litter pollutes curbside and clogs storm drains.

Commentators to THE PLANET have mentioned some beauts: Pecks Road, Hubbard Avenue, Elizabeth Avenue, and others. Our favorite happens to be East Street, especially going east from Park Square until Merril Road or Dalton. This is Pittsfield’s main east-west artery. It serves as a vital passage for business, citizens, and public safety, yet its condition depresses the spirit and de-accelerates the vehicle. Potholes lace East Street, and wherever you see a sewer opening or any other service access, you can be sure the road has vanished. That’s because of shoddy materials, hasty workmanship, and materials bought on the cheap. This also explains East Street’s odd pavement “peeling,” where ponds of incision rest inches below the road surface.

Where should this responsibility fall? Hey Linda Tyer, gotta mirror?  True, the roads have been lousy for a while, and The Lovely Linda inherited flashes in the far darkness rather than transparency and light.

No excuse.

She’s been in two+ years, and the streets are worse. In almost every area of civic life, in fact, Tyer’s missy-hugged, photo-op brand of lightweight appeasement politics has made daily life for city dwellers worse not better. THE PLANET would challenge her supporters to name specific areas of improvement. When the wires don’t ring, we’ll know it’s the mayor’s inner circle not getting back to us. Why? Because they have nothing and would loathe to present much because they know how easily and factually THE PLANET could pick it apart.

We present yet another Administration, afraid of an honest discussion.

In two years or even four, no executive can solve the city’s multiple problems. But the first rule of wise government, as in medicine, is “First do no harm.” Tyer’s actions and inactions have harmed, not helped. A strong executive would, before all else, take care of the city’s economics:

1. Reduce spending

2. Cut taxes.

3. Inventory ALL not-for-profit enterprises.

4. Change city health insurance plan from 85-15 to 60-40.

We could go on and on, but why send dying flares out over a swamp? We invite you now to submit your candidate for WORST ROAD IN PITTSFIELD. THE PLANET will then get it to Cleopatra the way we personally fixed the deepest pothole in the city, northbound lane near Dunkin‘ on upper North Street.

We got friends in low places.

I traveled today along East St. from PHS to Merrill Road. The road condition was awful….ruddy and full of “holes”….my return trip was via Hubbard Ave….big mistake…nothing like the loud “thump” of your tires hitting one of these “holes”..some are pretty deep-when you “hit” one, you cry out-“Oh my God”……not a good image for the City for future business prospects……

So many streets look like war zones and it’s only January. What will March be like? The light at Springside Avenue and North Street by BMC has 2 gigantic potholes right in the middle of the road that are nearly impossible to avoid. Pecks Road, forget about driving on it, as potholes are wide and you would have to risk life and limb by going into the other lane to avoid them. I also notice than many potholes throughout the city are extremely deep. You could literally get stuck in one of them.

All of the flooding that happened last week also did a lot of damage to roads that were not good to begin with. The flooding water pulled up major pieces of concrete on many roads. Why didn’t the city open drainage in areas prone to flooding before the heavy rains and snow melt of last week? There was lots of warning of what was going to happen with the combination of heavy rain and snow melt.

This is what happens when a city puts all of its money toward one thing which is the school system and ignores everything else. The quality of life goes down for everyone in the city. The city truly looks disgraceful with all of these potholes. Cheap materials are used every year and the potholes come back the next year even bigger than before.

The Doyle debacle (1998 – 2001)

PEDA was founded in the Summer of 1998. It turns 20 years old this coming Summer. 0 private tenants. Still too polluted to build on.

Mayor Gerry Doyle signed the Consent Decree with GE’s then-CEO Jack Welch. A majority of toxic waste PCBs sites are capped. The problem is that caps do not last long. When the caps become ineffective, the cancer causing chemicals spread through the land, water, and air.

Millions of dollars went unaccounted for during Doyle’s term. Through present day, no one officially knows where all of the taxpayers’ dollars went!

Pittsfield went into state government receivership during the Doyle administration.

Tyer is keeping city hall offices on North St -no shit, it’s been 2 years and she renewed the lease.

She doesn’t give a shit about us Kapanskis.

And somone wants to know what neighborhoods are shitholes. Basically, most of the ones within walking distance of the renaissance. Mr Melle can name streets for you.

I remember wondering why so little road repair was happening from the beginning of the Ruberto administration. Year after year as he was mayor I kept wondering “where is the road repair money going”? And even after he left office after his long misguided affair with Pittsfield, subsequent politicians seemed to feel road money should be spent elsewhere.

We know that a ginormus amount went into North street to coddle the business owner/donor class. But shouldn’t there have been someone observing the situation? Someone in the highway dept? And if there was such a person was he over-rode if he brought up the subject at city hall?

Once again I say that if you hire friends and family and not the best qualified people for a job you screw yourself and in this case the taxpayers.

Picture 40 school buses banging over these roads twice a day for the next several months. Now picture the maintenance bill.

Stores and businesses leaving, roads falling apart, out of control crime and lack of opportunity and our major concerns are garbage cans and pot. You just can’t fake that level of brilliance.

Yup, nobody knows nothing about nothing, and can’t do nothing about nothing–and these aren’t even city officials.

Prediction: Le Mall will close at this time next year–they’ll hang out for one more Christmas season. Possibility that Target and the theater will remain open, but that’s it.

California has the highest poverty rate of any U.S. state, according to new statistics released last month by the United States Census Bureau.

In its report, the Census Bureau used cost of living to determine poverty level. The report utilized a standard called the “supplemental poverty measure,” or SPM, which incorporates various factors including expenditures on food, clothing, shelter and utilities, as well as geographic variations, in housing costs.

According to the Census Bureau, individuals are considered poor if the resources they share with others in the household are “not enough” to meet their basic needs.

The Census Bureau began reporting SPM in 2011, to enhance the previously used “official poverty measure,” which applies a universal poverty threshold based on income. In other words, with the official poverty measure, the Census Bureau considers anyone earning less than a certain income impoverished, whether they live in California or Mississippi. SPM, however, takes into account that the same income cannot go as far in California as it can in other states.

A little more than 20 percent of Californians — about 8 million people — live in poverty, according to the state’s SPM rate. By comparison, in Mississippi, the state with the highest poverty rate by the official poverty measure, only about 16 percent live in poverty, according to the state’s SPM.

East street is the face of our city as much as North St or more. Its a major through road to shopping and east to west north to south travel. People from all over shop on East street for automobiles.

Its the main entrance to the PEDA site. Yet it receives the attention of the redheaded step child. All the main roads into the city should be cared for better. Street sweeping, road repair, and cutting of the weeds on the islands.

The PEDA entrance needs to be revamped at East St as does the Tyler / Dalton ave intersection. Companies wan’t shovel ready sites not a site that need years of infrastructure repair. East at Fenn is long overdue for a traffic light. And the cross walk that connects the car dealers has not been painted in years.

In the summer months the walk loop is disgusting with dirt litter, I always see broken glass and cigarette buts (easily fixed with the street sweeper making a pass through).

The road to the GE petting zoo is overgrown, yet its amazing how many people near and far visit the deer. Why not capitalize on that and clean it up?? How much would it really cost to trim the trees and mow the lawn? Should it not be taken care of anyway?

This is what visitors and potential developers see when looking at this site or shopping for a automobile. A dirty neglected property and city.

Horrible editorial in the Berkshire Eagle about making use of the Berkshire Mall after it no longer exists which Progressives have been wanting for a long time. Guess what their genius idea is for the mall? How about indoor agriculture for the growing of the BB’s favorite new substance, pot. The BB is hell bent on turning this area into one big drug sh**hole. It’s not enough that drug use is out of control in this area, but Progressives keep pushing pot on everybody. It’s not enough that mothers are fighting an uphill battle to keep pot out of their communities so it’s not one more thing that kids can abuse. In addition we have a Progressive newspaper pushing pot like its candy.

“Dalton Avenue dispensary heads to Pittsfield zoning board in bid to add recreational sales”
By Amanda Drane , The Berkshire Eagle, January 16, 2018

PITTSFIELD — A medical marijuana dispensary coming soon to Dalton Avenue is asking the city to approve additions that would equip the facility to sell for recreational purposes.

Berkshire Roots, scheduled to open at 501 Dalton Ave. in March, will appear before the Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday. The company seeks to expand the shop’s parking lot, upgrade utility lines and the stormwater management system, and revise the property’s use to include sale of marijuana for recreational purposes.

Some 15,000 of the building’s nearly 26,000 square feet will be dedicated to growing marijuana. Berkshire Roots began prepping the space — once home to a Salvation Army store, Casey’s Billiards and an auto shop — about a year ago.

Berkshire Roots plans to bring the total number of parking spaces to 67, add a vinyl fence in front of the facility and bring a sidewalk in the entryway into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“We have effectively turned what used to be Casey’s Billiards and the Salvation Army into a unique facility,” Andy Nuciforo, one of the company’s investors, said during a Community Development Board meeting on Tuesday.

Board members unanimously voted to send the special permit amendments forward with a positive recommendation.

Nuciforo explained that legislators overhauled the state’s marijuana law in July, and among the “dizzying number of changes” came a provision allowing already-certified dispensaries to sell both medical and recreational marijuana in the same facility so long as the operations are separate.

“There will be a black magic marker separation between these two functions,” he said.

Nuciforo said the dispensary will begin selling medical marijuana in March, and will likely begin selling recreational marijuana this summer.

I believe this particular pot palace has deep roots in has-been politicians who had inside connections in Boston and got their permits and licenses over other contenders because of that.

They may not be listed as owners but have heavy investments. Some of the same people who wanted to lock kids up for selling pot now want to get rich off of selling it to them.

The Salvation Army was a store that really helped low income people. A pot store is just a tacky addition to a city that doesn’t need any more substances to abuse. Nuciforo has no reason to brag about a pot store especially since he will benefit from it.

They all know it is a partial shutdown. The one in 2013 was between 15 and 18%. But they won’t always say “partial” and they’ll never give you the percentage. And only “nonessential” functions will shut down.

Last time we learned that only 6% of the EPA is “essential.”

Regulation 138 part B of the Morse code book states that It is “OK to sell pot if you can prove you are a special interest type AND you do not come from a ShitHole country”.

Actually she is not the one who ruined it. She just made the conscious choice to make it even worse.

Well, not worse for everyone hee hee

Pittsdield residents should take advantage and Light Up! Are we able to go to work, high, how about driving, while high? What happens when the old lady beats the shock out of me, while high, will she get off on a technicality? Last one was a joke, hahaha. Light up Pittsfield, and keep you’re windows open! Have one on Andy!

CBD and 1:1 THC blends relieve pain and anxiety, yet don’t give a psychoactive high.

Educate yourself. The more anti-marijuana sentiments I see, the more I realize how out of touch and full of themselves locals are.

We don’t like it, so you can’t use it. Yet liquor stores and methadone clinics everywhere. I challenge anyone to find the Northampton dispensary without google maps. It’s so unassuming its comical.

Yet, we had alcoholic neighbors afraid putting a dispensary at the old KFC would “ruin” the neighborhood

Fools… all of you

Will there be a buy 4 get one free, come on,where are the Charter Rules? See Trump antagonists, jobs are coming, forget about the billions spent on anti-drug abuse over the years, it ain’t the Big Dig, at least.

Do you think he knew where to go and how to negotiate with/for the green machine? Last I knew, lawyers get 33 percent. Nancy Reagan is ‘rolling’ over, in her grave.

By the time the idiot progressives in the Berkshires get their shit together we will be lawfully selling medical cocaine and heroin.

That’s how long it’s going to take since theres always some group of snowflakes that hypocritically take their xanax, down some wine then complain it’s going to ruin the county.

As if their policies haven’t already done that. Can anyone find the dispensary in N. Hampton without google maps? Doubt it. Go to downtown Denver. There are dispensaries at every corner and you can’t even tell unless you are explicitly searching

Morons. All of you. Keep listening to Johnny Krol and his comrades then wonder why the city is going to hell in a handbasket

Linda, you suck. Plain and simple.

My home is now within walking distance of the methadone clinic
+ the future connected ex politicians pot factory building. I am
now wondering if my property value has increased or is it the likely
hood my house will be broken into has increased? I hate to judge down on their luck state sponsored drug addicts, never mind that no I don’t. Why is is that brokest states are Blue States?

Much a do about nuttin folks. Trumps attorney General is going to put the kibosh on the whole pot industry country wide. He is going to pull the rug out from under a billion dollar industry? Why you ask? Just for fun..because they can. Trump loves chaos and this will piss a lot of people off. He lives for that. So my advice is not to invest too heavily into this pot stuff just yet. It has the Trump curse on it.

Funny thing is, half of the people that that I know supported legalization of recreational pot voted for Trump. States rights bull.

The Mayor needs to know or care that the PPD is continually, continually going to the same people day after day. The dispatchers treat these individuals like a soap opera, almost as though it’s a joke. These people need help, if you get calls on individuals five times a week or more in some cases, something should be done to end the problem. Wonder what Ron thinks of this?

Coal mining?? Could we look for coal on the PEDA site? Holy shit the economic engine we have been looking for was right in front of our eyes. Can we get a TIF so search for coal under the toxic waste? If it was not there before it might be now.

There may be oil there may be diamonds. When can we start digging mayor?

Is there any way to open a snack shop by Andy’s pot shop? I’ll make more of the potheads than Andy.
