SPRING STREET SHOOTING ANOTHER TYLER FAILING

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY JAN. 10, 2018) — With the recent thaw in below zero temps, THE PLANET deems we can justify thoughts of spring.

“Spring” — a word that harbors hope, the breath inside the seed that waits for a slight warming of earth before the green spear tip pokes through the cold ground.

Spring. Soon, the Old Professor will begin again a new semester, the “Spring” Semester, the dear word employed officially, with state sanction no less, on our Comp II syllabus.

Spring. It’s also the name of a street in Pittsfield. Do you know here it is?

Recent news reports in the mainstream media told you of a man taken into custody by police and accused of gunfire on Spring Street, on or about New Year’s Day. What they left out, however, was the important fact of Spring Street’s location. Why? THE PLANET cannot say, and we would be loathe to speculate on behalf of our less free, more moribund media colleagues. Did the editors overseeing the stories deem the location of Spring Street irrelevant? Was it a lapse in journalist judgment, or perhaps a desire to populate the corner-office fiction of a “Pittsfield Renaissance?”

We wonder: How many out of 10 city resident could tell you the location of Spring Street? Three? Two? One. None? Test yourself.  Do you know?

THE. PLANET is going through this mental GPS exercise on you because the location of Spring Street is a crucial part of the story. Spring Street, you see, is located off of Tyler Street, the upper (west) section, near where the Silk Mill apartments are located. This is the area where mayor Linda Tyer has proclaim a “Renaissance.” THE PLANET kids you not. This word, a beautiful word anywhere else, has been debased in Pittsfield by a series of mayors who has resolutely ignored the city’s systemic sickness for a series of grant-fueled cosmetic projects ($6,000 seasonal trash cans, colored umbrellas) that serve as sugar pills for the cancer patient.

Tyler Street, and Spring Street in particular, have degenerated into crime-riddled neighborhoods where a minority of drug addicts, gang members, and an assorted gang of scammers keep a majority of good, decent citizens hostage. Spend some time there, talking to residents. That’s what you’ll hear.

Tyer made large about Tyler Street during the campaign. She boasted about the Miracle Mile in her State of the City address. Let’s look at the record. In two+ years, she has:

* Ignored blight (Exhibit A, Hess Forest, empty storefronts)

* Whiffed badly on the Walmart proposal for the PEDA site, a development that proved her not only to be a lightweight with power but ineffectual in influence.

* Failed to honor her pledge to reduce crime.

* Wrote off Morningside, giving it wholesale to the drug trade, through her failure to change the way policing is done there.

* Made a joke of both her office and her official judgment with the Trashcan debacle.

* Listened to a meddling small group of ignorant do-gooders with dubious ties to the area, especially a couple of parasitic meddlers who for reasons that baffle have her ear.

* Driven the marginal middle classes to the point of insolvency with a relentless series of tax hikes and hidden levies.

* Refused to address the issue of a grammar school sitting within a pebble’s flight of the toxic mountain of Hill 78.

* Did nothing to explore if reopening of the GE Consent Agreement might be in order as a means to rectify the still-polluted Woodlawn acres.

We could go on, but we let this indictment stand as is.

As we predicted, Tyer addressed none of this in her la-Dee-da State of the City address. She painted a tale of fairy land, a land that doesn’t exist. It may play well with the croissant-and-Brie crowd, but for Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski, it was more of the same bad news.

The SOTC speech shared two huge revelations from the mayor: Senior citizens L-O-V-E pickle ball and millennials love “hip” housing. Keep that in mind while choking on your taxes.

That’s right, folks. Mayor Linda Tyer is a miserable failure. Pittsfield has violent crime, poor neighborhoods, post-industrial polluted business parks and public schools, and a lot of feel good propaganda by the special interests.

It is all her fault! I mean, none of these sad realities existed prior to her assuming the corner office 2 years ago.

She should have said that Pittsfield sucks! It is in a downward spiral and her administration is digging a deeper hole. She should have said that she looks forward to raising taxes, fees, debts to give raises to the public union members in exchange for their support and votes.

At least Linda is lovely!

What is going on with the BMC hospital negotiations between management and the nurses union?

*****

What is going on with the Trump administration rescinding the Cole Memorandum protecting states who allow the legal sale of non-medical marijuana?

Since 2014, Congress has approved the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer Amendment to stop the Justice Department from interfering in medical marijuana states, but the Cole memo was the only thing protecting non-medical marijuana legalization.

Is the Trump administration going to prosecute non-medical marijuana dispensaries? Will Congress act to protect non-medical marijuana dispensaries?

Trump campaigned on letting the states decide on legal issues concerning the sale of marijuana. He broke his promise!

There are far more serious substance abuse issues the federal and state government has to deal with than dealing with the selling of non-medical marijuana in states where it is legal!

According to Raids online there was a Homicide on Lincoln st on 12/17/17. And that is not too far from Spring st. Also, did this ever even make the newspaper? Not so sure it did.

Thank you Dan,

An abject failure by any objective standard. Sadly, that is what this mayor and her administration have become. She won because she wasn’t Bianchi, and like many mayors before her, she pissed away the goodwill and opportunity that comes with a new administration. She is a one and done mayor, like sad sack Hathaway, or at least I hope so. Even Bianchi could beat her now.
Taxes through the roof, shootings through the roof, homicides throught the roof, tax breaks galore, and she adds millions to the budget, calls it an investment, and then pats her self on the back for responsible budgeting. Puke, double puke -she makes me sick.

I was not impressed with Persip last night. He asked stupid and unnecessary questions of Ruffer about St. Marys. I would have laughed in his face, but she handled it well.

It was obvious he only wanted to get his time on TV. I guess we can look forward to that from now on.

I was not impressed with Moon, either. When talk centered on the mayor using city hall basement for a fitness room – she made many statements as a nurse justifying the use to cut city employees health costs – an obvious benefit which reinforced her home in the mayor’s back pocket. I was also floored when Tyer said the city spent $800,000 to set up the Scarafoni space for the inspectors offices. Yikes! Did anyone know that, or did that cash come out of Bianchi’s desk drawer??

I find it disgusting that most of the counselors arguments against the toter system in the iberkshires article referred to citizen and constituent complaints.

Then you have golden hipster Caccamo who (those in Ward 3 not in his inner circle know) he is nearly impossible to contact and when he responds he gives vague political answers and mumbo jumbo about finding data.

He sat in on sessions and knows better than us in Ward 3. Ever wonder why the boy has never announced a single ward meeting, information session, etc? if he does it’s definitely not announced in a public way.

Caccamo, you are Pauly’s puppet and all of us in little Italy know it

School cost are killing Pittsfield.Mccandless went on TV and sold 45 paraprofessional layoffs, these never happened alie a sham all designed to fool the taxpayer….school committee and council with Mayor are in on it.Pittsfield will be giving huge raises to teachers this year and not 1 person can say no to teacher of which 34%live out of town as they will not sent their kids ty o the system that pays them .

Much concern and trepidation on the council regarding toters . Usually when I am that iffy about something that involves a ton of money I back away.

The mayor gambled with taxpayer money on the parking meter system and it back fired big time. She looks foolish and the taxpayers feel totally duped by her and Kerwood. Hope she uses better judgement on the toters. Outside interests will benefit most from this and that is not what should be the deciding factor. Just tell the special interest NO this time.

Come on UAlbany…to expect our current city officials to apply common sense to a problem is asking way too much. Don’t you understand, it’s all about spending as much taxpayer money as possible to put it in the pockets of those who don’t need it. Anyone who disagrees with this approach is anti-Pittsfield.

People have less to recycle,Newspapers were a huge part of recycling…not any more.Seniors in Pittsfield are not buying canned food as they use to.This recycle deal is not being dealt with facts.Toters are not about saving tax payers money.Pittsfield loves when people outside the area talk to us as if we are a real city.
Move on from the totes.Cut school spending.Move to becket, hinsdale.Everyone on the council can afford to raise their own taxes…….

All Grants and state school funding should be ended. This City has gone as far as it can with the handouts, PEDA dropped the ball and the Convict Decree, (pun) along with PEDA,has strangled the local economy, bad management doesn’t help either..how can a salt account be so enormous? The Beacon Theatre can’t be losing money with or without the extras from TIF’s, aren’t the idea of TIF’s to employe people, which I think is wrong also,we
aren’t a private company (taxpayers) and why does anyone who is not connected to business deals and employmees of want to give taxpayer dollars to a Movie Theatre,Covanta, or any other successful operation?
