LATEST GUN MASSACRE SHOULD CLAIM PROFESSIONAL LIVES AT THE FBI

What did we know of gunplay’s jagged offices? Enough, apparently, to understand the lethality of actual weapons, to separate play from reality, and to later possess guns or not and not have others have to pay with their lives.
One of THE PLANET‘s favorite toys as a lad had to be our Roy Rogers leather holster. It held two plastic-pearl-handle six-shooters and helped us win many a battle, from Injuns circling the wagons in the back yard to reversing the loss at the Alamo on The Hill. As we grew older, our dad taught us how to shoot his .22 rifle, the German handgun he brought back from the war, and the 30.06 Savage rifle built just down the pike. Actual gunfire, as opposed to our pretend firings, had a power, lethality, and finality that cured us of wanting to own guns when we became of age. It was a personal choice. Dad kept his firearms, and — when as a teen accompanied him on hunting trips to New Brunswick, Canada — he packed the Savage while I shot with a Yashica TX Electro-X 35mm rangefinder.
THE PLANET child knew tons of kids, mostly boys, who loved playing pretend with guns. Our later collection included an arsenal from Mattell: A Fanner 50 Shootin’ Shell pistol and holster, a Colt .45 Army gun, and a Winchester that could take dummy bullets and eject them when you cocked the lever for your next shot. Dad made his three boys machine guns from plywood in his woodworking shop. We played endless games of army, cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers, and various other games that weren’t about gunfire but the strategy involved in defeating the other side. The point is, again, that our elders made the distinction clear between pretend guns and the actual thing, a lesson our active and maturing minds could esily absorb.
Far from being damaged by the knowledge, we grew up able to separate fiction from fact, a skill largely lost today on virtual-reality youth, a lesson further driven home by the many dramas and teleplays on TV during the 50s and 60s featuring Westerns, war, detectives, and other adventurous situations involving gunfire. Why, when George Reeves as Superman broke through another brick wall to foil the bad guys, he took their bullets in such cavalier fashion that we didn’t think twice about it. On the contrary, we donned a beach towel as a cape, stood in from of a window fan to get the cape rippling, and became Superman ourselves. Not once did we actually try to fly or step in front of a live round.
THE PLANET shares all this in light of the most recent mass murder, at a Florida high school. The aftermath brought out the usual politicking, with liberals calling for more gun laws and conservatives pointing out the need for better identification of the sick bastards most likely apt to go off on a rampage. A person who knew the 19-year-old Florida shooter all but sent the FBI a replay video from the crystal ball that showed the shooter mowing down people like kewpie dolls. The blood and gaping wounds appeared real. The FBI, however, failed to follow protocol, and the tip was never acted upon despite a massacre being spelled out in triplicate and in Braille. This wasn’t a failure of process but of people, namely, the FBI officials who blew it, costing 17 people their lives and horrific emotional damages to countless family, friends, and relatives.
The FBI’s failure should come with a figurative death sentence for agency director Christopher Wray and every manager and agent in the FBI’s Florida division who messed up so badly. Fay Wray could have done a better job. Even a cross-dressing J. Edgar Hoover would have been able to act promptly, skirt and all. And speaking of which, where was Efrem Zimbalist Jr. when we really need him?
Going back to the FBI’s failure to act on the telegraphing of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 to the politicization of the agency that occurred under President Clinton, Bush II, and President Obama, American citizens can now stay up at night worried that this public-safety agency has become an enemy of the people. We can also grind our stomachs knowing with certainty that young Mr. Cruz’s massacre will be repeated again. The only questions are when, where, and how many? Perhaps this will embolden President Trump to order that heads roll at the FBI.
One final point: the social media and video games that have desensitized young people to gun violence could be flushed down the crapper with no loss to society or the country. What’s “Grand Theft Auto” and worse next to “Bonanza” or “The Roy Rogers Show?”

Only a fool would blame the NRA for this latest school shooting. I agree with Dan – heads need to roll at the FBI. They have already admitted that big mistakes were made on their part. This kid issued cries for help – and while the cries were reported to the FBI – their inaction is responsible for this horrific event.
Taking away guns from American citizens is not the answer. Look at Chicago, a city with the strictest gun control laws in the nation. This city has been run by liberal Dems for years. Now the criminals are the only ones who are armed. And the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy locked and loaded.

Remember the outcry from Democrats after 9/11 that we should not sacrifice our freedom for safety. That was after 3,000 people were murdered in cold blood, but the Dems were all about the freedom. I agreed with them. What happened to that message? They realized that big government needs to have people unarmed. That should scare all Americans.
We should make background checks much stricter, however, and the FBI and states need to coordinate their information MUCH BETTER. Some top people at the FBI should be fired. Hollywood should stop the violent gun films. Schools should also be much better protected in case of any violence.

Millions of AR style rifles fire millions of rounds an inanimate targets every week. Blunt objects and knives are used in more killings than AR rifles. If they are manufactured to kill people they must be a poor design as only a tiny fraction of rounds fired from AR rifles are fired at people. You are more likely to die from a medical mistake than from being shot with an AR. Medical mistakes kill 400,000 Americans every year.
It’s time to keep the doctors out of the schools and pass legislation banning blunt objects.

Sounds like an easy compromise to me. If you need an assault rifle and high capacity magazine to hunt you are not a hunter at all. In my younger days I hunted a lot and with many different hunters. I can’t imagine any of them would have considered it sport to use an assault weapon or high capacity mags while hunting. But back then men were men.

Having discussed how firearms are the great equalizer, enabling a 90 pound grandmother to defend herself against a 250 pound home invader, I thought it would be proper to discuss which guns are best for those sensitive to recoil.
Sensitivity to recoil affects many people, and can be the result of injury, old age, small physical size, or just a dislike of recoil itself. I personally tend to enjoy recoil, at least for the first couple dozen shots fired at the range, but I do understand why some people dislike it. With that understanding, I’ll first address the factors which determine the recoil felt when a gun is fired, means of reducing the recoil felt by the shooter, and guns best suited to those sensitive to recoil.
How Recoil is Determined
Recoil is an expression of Newton’s third law of motion, which is often paraphrased as “for each action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” In other words, the bullet/shot and hot gases go forward, and the gun goes backwards. Various factors pertaining to the gun and bullet/shot determine not only the actual recoil energy that the shooter must absorb, but also subjective amount of recoil the shooter feels that they have experienced. I won’t get into the physics behind these facts for the sake of brevity, however this is basic high school physics. These factors which determine recoil are:
The mass of the gun – All things being equal, a heavier gun will have softer recoil.
The mass of the projectile – All things being equal, a lighter bullet/shot will have softer recoil.
The speed of the projectile – All other things being equal, a faster bullet will have heavier recoil, and the recoil will feel subjectively ‘sharper’, since the recoil happens more quickly.

I lurk here a lot just to be entertained but today I feel I have to comment. If you don’t know the difference between an AR (armalite rifle), a hunting rifle and a M16 you shouldn’t open your mouth and removed all doubt about your ignorance on the subject. In Massachusetts and most other states you CANNOT own an Assault rifle. That is a select fire fully automatic m-16 or M-4 rifle or their equivalents. There is no difference between a consumer semi-automatic and a so-called consumer AR type rifle. They are both used for hunting and target shooting just the same. Because one looks different than other really has NO bearing. There have never been more ignorance on the subject than in the news or grandstanding politicians, even idiots here who point to the type of gun as being the root of all evil. Concentrate of the real problem and it’s not the type of gun. And for you short term memory deprived folks, killers like Timothy James McVeigh and the Tsarnaev Brothers found a way without shot. The criminally insane, martyrs and mentally unstable will find a way unless stopped. Put the resources there instead of looking like an idiot on TV or FB with a Sporting rifle in your hand.

17 states allow teachers & other adults to carry loaded guns on school grounds with written permission from the principal or school board. MA is one of those 17 states. The best idea I have heard regarding protecting our schoolchildren is to recruit paid/volunteer teams of active/retired law enforcement, vets & military personnel as posted guards in our schools.
And, you guessed it, the Florida school was a gun-free zone. The Gun-Free School Zone Act of 1990 was introduced by Biden and signed into law by HW Bush. According to the Crime Prevention Resource Center, 98% of US mass shootings occur in gun-free zones.

Re: Open letter to the Boston Globe Editorial Idiots
Dear Boston Globe Editorial Idiots:
In response to your editorial endorsing the “deaccession” of priceless art by the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, it is a shakedown! I grew up in Pittsfield where my father was involved in Pittsfield politics decades ago. My observations from that time and now is that Pittsfield politics shakes everyone down for money to serve their own selfish political purposes.
Ideally, a locality would use public dollars to invest in institutions and its people. However, Pittsfield politics has always done the opposite. To be clear, they use public dollars to shakedown taxpayers to stay in power by investing in the vested and special interests, specifically the “Big 3”, which consist of the public school, police, and fire unions.
The Berkshire Museum is selling two Norman Rockwell paintings the artist once donated himself, in addition to several Hudson River artworks, among many other historic art pieces to grow its endowment. Never underestimate the power of greed! The power elite in Pittsfield politics supporting this done deal will fill the coffers of their friends in the banking, construction, and political fields.
The Boston Globe Editorial Idiots should not have used the phrase “museum police” to describe the majority of people who have dissented against this travesty that will set a precedent for other museums and not-for-profit organizations to sell their assets to fill their coffers during financial hardship. I endorse free speech and the power of dissenting voices when politicians and bureaucrats exploit the people and their institutions for their own selfish ends.
Over the decades, I have grown frustrated by the Boston Globe Editorial Idiots concerning their support of the “Big Dig”, “Romney-care”, and now the Berkshire Museum shakedown!

According to iberkshires Pittsfield wants to use its recently collected community Preservation funds to fix up the Taconic high school track and baseball fields. I had no idea that is what the fund was for but as soon as that money came in we had to find a contractor to give it to. Tax and spend.

1) AR15 is banned for sale on account there appears to be a culture of crime amongst the deranged (not amongst the 99.9999% reliable user)
In exchange, we agree to the following policies:
1: Purchased of high load (large chambered round) rifles and handguns to buyers under 25 are preferred by a review of school records, social media posts to highlight the disturbed buyer.
2: Schools be staffed by retired/discharged military personnel trained in crisis situation and capable of discerning disturbed individuals within civilian populations. This proposal benefits Those Vets needing work that bridges military experience and everyday civilian life. It would put a dent in opiate abuses occurring in schools. And, it could provide positive role models for young men and women lacking effective adults at home.
3: Those flagged for prohibition are potential candidates for psychological evaulation.
We reintroduce the mental institutions closed during the 70-80’s and find a place for those who are ‘too dangerous to own a firearm’ but are safe to walk freely amongst us (????)
The Second Admendment shall not be infringed, as written in the Constitution, but the Constitution does not protect you from poking, prodding, and evaulations following g public statements of terrorist intent and terrifying teachers.
3: The media should be censored from publishing photos of the murderers and publishing their names. Censorship to prevent dissemination of news is attack on the Constitution, but adherence to taboo (language, sexual content) is conventional.
So, here’s my policy proposal that fairly addresses concerns regarding the culture of firearms as well the underlying lack of direction that both encourages and protects the mentally ill.

New proposal. You are under 21 and you show up at a gun store looking for an AR-15. The owner hands you your gun, and a pick up truck load of ammo. Then you are placed on a troop loader and dropped off in Somalia with 3 days k rations and a picture of your dog.
As stated by others, an AR15 is too ineffective for Somalia – the land where fully automatic AK’s go to breed.
The problem lies in culture of media exploitation of crisis to satisfy it’s own interests and a health policy that commits responsibility of the dangerously mentally ill to their own and families. If the AR-15 is a part of the problem, which it likely is not, it may need to be addressed. These killers are largely young men, so reviewing the pool of young men is a reasonable profile technique.
Removing the violently disturbed from homes that have firearms or not is sensible medical policy. The latest guy was reportedly non-compliant with his medications. Would that happen in observed state?
We do need to get off the ‘guns are evil’ drumbeat that results in polarizing policy, expensive and unconstitutional burdens, and no approaching the loose killers that lurk in the schools, malls, and workplaces.
Guns per se are not evil. But certain makes are. Assault style weapons are made for one purpose – to kill as many people as possible in the smallest amount of time. That is evil. Other guns are made for personal protection or hunting. Those I’ve no problem with.

I could support banning AR 15 only if it is part of a comprehensive approach to a segment of the mentally disturbed, school safety, and the media.
