SOCIAL MEDIA HYSTERIA PREVENTS RATIONAL CONVERSATION OF RACE

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION APRIL 20-22, 2018) — Inability to let go of the past freezes a person into a lingering immaturity of perpetual pain, blame, and victimhood. It works that way for nations, too, as well as races. Daily we see this being played out full-boil as a tiny minority keeps America from advancing toward enlightenment through the egregious use of the race card.

Fact is, growing up and to this day, THE PLANET never noticed anyone’s skin color until they brought it up or threw it in my face. That applies to white skinheads, black hotheads, and anyone of any hue and disposition in between, over, around, or through.

Friend Eddie comes to mind. He hawks beer in Syracuse, NY at SU basketball, football, Triple A baseball and hockey, and special events such as the “Super Bowl” bowling tournament now going on in that city, the one televised nationally this weekend. When I see Eddie, we hug, joke, laugh, and raconteur (if we may use the word as a verb). We end with a handshake and a fist bump. He’s not black; we’re not white. We’re just friends. He’s known as “the best cottdamned beer hawker in America,” and through his own enterprise and hustling, he probably brings home more in commission and tips than most middle-management types who occupy soulless cubicles on Rug Row. Eddie’s got aa booming voice and an infectious laugh. He’s not a victim. He’s a MAN. We are blessed to have many Eddies in our life.

This week in America, though, race has once again been blown out of all proper proportion. Consider:

We’ve seen Starbucks coffee chain over-react to the arrest of two black men in Philadelphia. The loudmouths were quick to brand the coffee brand as “racist,” and the company wrenched its back in apology while announcing a nationwide shutdown on a day in late May for “sensitivity training.” At Syracuse University, the school suspended one of its professional fraternities (engineering) for a video showing racial hazing. SU chancellor Kent Syverud had to cartwheel before a tiny group of students wearing a hairshirt and spiked collar. And at Claremont McKenna College, “Black Lives Matter” types mounted a rally to block entrance to a building where pro-police author Heather McDonald was due to speak. The university didn’t dare enforce a law that forbids blocking entry to public buildings for fear of causing a riot. McDonald delivered her speech to an empty hall, with the talk being streamed live online. She made the point that modern policing is not propelled by racism but by data, which shows the continued preponderance of black-on-black crime. So much for one of academia’s hallowed traditions, that of free speech in the marketplace of ideas.

THE PLANET knows what every thinking, observant person knows: (a) The magnification of racism by social media from a problem into an obsession has distorted the issue beyond all reasonable amelioration by government, schools, social workers, police, honorable activists, politicians, or any other societal institution, and (b) the social media furor has served as a serendipitous dodge to avoid the real issue, namely, that of black-on-black violence.

Neither Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Ralph Abernathy, Jesse Jackson, Angela Davis, or any other civil rights figure from the era had social media. Consequently, they were able take advantage of generous attention spans to use writing, speech, and action as a logical lever to spur racial improvements that were once thought unthinkable. They wrote, spoke, and acted when conditions were exponentially worse than they are today, using what millennials deride as archaic, analog tools. Yet when you ask the cool latte-and-brie crowd to explain the great success of these truly great leaders, they give you the blank staring of the walking dead.

Today, the instantaneous assaults of hysterical twitter feeds have largely killed critical thinking and the possibility of meaningful action on an issue that continues to dog America 153 years after Grant and Lee shook hands at Appomattox. The shrill and deafening defiance of ignorant, flashpan protest movements such as Black Lives Matter and the politically correct Me Too make a mockery of King’s peaceful marches and soda-fountain sits-ins — even the fire of Black Panthers Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and company, who based their strategy on the undeniable, Major League racism of the country, particularly the Jim Crow South.

Black Lives Matter is a creation of social media, a communication channel that truncates reasonable debate and substitutes a kind-of pixeled demagoguery whose brevity precludes anything but inflamed and reactive emotionalism. It’s not enough to hate. It’s not enough to have hate fuel protest. Such reactionary communication only leads to action that’s nothing more than wolved anarchy wearing political sheepskin. It’s reached the point where activists are calling on Boston police to investigate as a “hate crime” a “White Lives Matter” graffiti moronically spray painted on the cracked concrete of a wall in Roxbury?

Mainstream Media, of course, comes off even worse. While MM is on its way to extinction, it sadly thinks that its best option lies in turning social media into a news story rather than a competitor. That remains one of the crucial communications issues of the age, but it is a story for another time.

With that preamble, THE PLANET shares a story you may have missed. It was first published Thursday in The Washington Post, written by Cleve Wootson and Herman Wong. We present it here:

——— 000 ———

In the hours after Barbara Bush died Tuesday, even those who didn’t share the former first lady’s political views expressed their condolences and recounted warm memories of the Bush family matriarch.

Former president Bill Clinton, the man who once campaigned against her husband, called Bush “a remarkable woman” with “grit & grace, brains & beauty.” Another former president, Barack Obama, said she had “humility and decency that reflects the very best of the American spirit.”

But a creative writing professor at California State University at Fresno had a blunt message for those offering up fond remembrances:
“Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal,” Randa Jarrar wrote Tuesday night on Twitter, according to the Fresno Bee.

In another tweet, the outspoken professor wrote: “I’m happy the witch is dead. can’t wait for the rest of her family to fall to their demise the way 1.5 million iraqis have. byyyeeeeeee.”

Jarrar’s words — and others that she used as she argued with critics for hours during an overnight tweetstorm — sparked a backlash that would soon prompt the university to distance itself from her remarks.

School officials also said they were reviewing the tenured professor’s position.

More than 2,000 people had replied to Jarrar before she made her Twitter account private, the Bee reported.
Some were upset at what they viewed as her incivility about a woman widely regarded as genteel.
For others, the sin was more basic: She had spoken ill of the dead.

Jarrar pointed to the comments as an example of “what it’s like to be an Arab American Muslim American woman with some clout online expressing an opinion.”

“Look at the racists going crazy in my mentions right now,” she tweeted.

The professor taunted those attacking her, sharing a contact number that was actually that of Arizona State University’s suicide hotline, and said she was a tenured professor who makes $100,000 a year.

“I will never be fired,” she tweeted.

Enraged, some people tagged Fresno State and the institution’s president, Joseph Castro, demanding that the professor be fired.
Jarrar laughed at them.

“LOL let me help you. You should tag my president @JosephlCastro. What I love about being an American professor is my right to free speech, and what I love about Fresno State is that I always feel protected and at home here,” Jarrar wrote. “GO BULLDOGS!”
On Wednesday, Castro told the Bee that Jarrar’s comments were “beyond free speech. This was disrespectful.”
“A professor with tenure does not have blanket protection to say and do what they wish,” he said. “We are all held accountable for our actions.”

Jarrar is on leave of absence and is not teaching any courses on campus during the current semester, a university spokeswoman told the Visalia Times Delta on Wednesday.

The professor did not respond to a request for comment.

As the controversy swirled, Fresno City College said Jarrar had dropped out as the featured reader at an upcoming literary festival. Jarrar had been scheduled to headline Lit Hop on Saturday, but informed organizers this week that she was withdrawing, the college said.

“While we respect the right to free speech, even objectionable speech, Jarrar’s statements are her own and do not reflect the values of LitHop or Fresno City College,” the statement said. “We acknowledge the severity of her statements and take very seriously the concerns expressed throughout the community. The safety of each individual, including Jarrar’s, and all members of the LitHop and Fresno City College community is our paramount concern. We do not support violence or threats on social media or elsewhere; rather, we value civil discourse and look forward to the necessary healing ahead.”

At a news conference Wednesday, Fresno State Provost Lynnette Zelezny said the university had put in place “additional security,” a common action, she said, “when we feel that there’s a spotlight on us.”

Fresno State originally responded to the controversy with a statement by Castro that said Jarrar’s words were “obviously contrary to the core values of our University” but that they “were made as a private citizen.”

Wednesday, on talk-radio station KMJ, the university president told host Ray Appleton: “I want all of your listeners to know that I condemn the tone, substance and timing of Dr. Jarrar’s comments on Twitter last night. I want that to be unambiguous. And how do I feel? I was shocked, upset, appalled just like everybody else.”

Zeleny, the provost, called Jarrar’s comments “deeply disrespectful” and said the school’s administration is taking the matter “very seriously,” KMJ reported.

Fresno State also noted that its flags were flying at half-staff.

The Fresno State College Republicans said they were “outraged” by Jarrar’s “reprehensible” and “completely irresponsible” remarks, which, they said, were “yet another example of intolerance that we have seen at other universities around the country.”
The California College Republicans said they would hold a memorial for Bush on the Fresno State campus and invited Jarrar to attend.

——— 000 ———

Make no mistake: THE PLANET stands for equal opportunity for all. Blacks in America have a legitimate beef in their ongoing struggle for full and equal status. We fully support the ideals that insist on the rights of ALL to pursue their destinies as they wish. However, as long as peole, particularly the young,  continue to be led by the shrill voices of social media activists, they shall remain frozen in victimhood. People need an equal place at the starting line, but when we insist that one group should be given a headstart to the finish, that’s when we have trouble.

We are all brothers and sisters under the protection of Minerva.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

3 levels of social conflict:
1. Interpersonal conflict, such as verbal or physical assault.
2. Structural conflict, such as a homeless or jobless person.
3. Cultural conflict, such as politics, religion, racial superiority or inferiority beliefs.

Dan Valenti’s views on “race” is in the “cultural conflict” category where people use their political, religious, and racial views against “other” people.

Social conflict is dangerous! No one or group of people should experience any of the 3 levels of being exploited by another person or group.

We need to heal our wounds and come together in peace and cooperation to resolve our differences.

We all mostly like the congressman we elected but it all the other congressmen we hate.We love the people of color we invite into our lives but its all the other people of color that show our racism. We all see color and we see differences but its when you accept it as a bouquet of difference we can slowly appreciate the importance of difference that enriches. We are a long way from there as we had the 1st black president who inspite of his grace ,intelligence, and class it showed the best of America and brought out the worst. Before the conversation takes place we must start that conversation with the ugly truth of being black in a white world .Many whites would like that to be a mulligan.Dan has written a nice position that reflects the mulligan point of view as it tidies up our racial mess.

Progressives are doing just the opposite of tidying up our so-called racial mess. I’m not sure what fancy college term that someone like Randa Jarrar would call what Progressives are doing, but it really doesn’t matter since they think they have the moral high ground.

Since Progressive educators on college campuses across the country have attempted their “cure” for all of us to get along regardless of race, it seems more young people of all races are dying. More young police officers and people on the street are having their young lives cut short. How long before sanity returns to our country and instead of stirring up trouble we try to heal our country?

Pat, did you know that all progressives are born with a black soul? And the only way they can become pure is if they watch Hannity until they have done their penance. Only Hannity can give them the forgiveness they need to get into heaven.

I assume you will be given a front seat on the bus headed into the sky.

Hey, gimme a break would ya? Obama was mixed race, half black and half white, and was supposed to be the great uniter. He turned into the great divider, starting with the arrest of Henry Gates, when he said the police officer acted “stupidly”. Thus began his war on cops which lasted his full 8 years, and worsened as time went on with Eric Holder, who was a shake down artist – the DOJ strong armed police departments nationwide into consent agreements. And guess who is now involved in the the Starbucks training? Yup, Eric Holder, a racists if there ever was one. Holder tucked it to Furgeson, and black lives matter was founded on a lie.

Hey Shooks,

The reason the black man, who was a renowned professor like Dan, got arrested is it was he who acted stupidy when the police officer responded to a call for a break and entering in progress. A little cooperation goes a long way. Gates brought it upon himself, as did Michael Brown, Eric Gardner, et al. As Yogi used to say, you can look it up.

A There is an article in iBershires about how Pitttsfield “chipped in” 1 million dollars toward Berkshire Innovation Center.

Interesting that Pittsfield chipped in like it had the taxpayers support. I would suggest that Pittsfield had neither the taxpayers support or even knowledge. Seems related to taxation without representation.

Social media is a mess. Now police are beginning to be murdered in the line of duty again as racial tensions are being stirred up. Many are young white and African American officers. Who is stirring up all the trouble in social media? Not only Progressives, but also Russian trolls. All are trying to destabilize the country for their own agenda. Progressives so they can take power again and Russia is working to destroy our country from within. Both are working together whether they realize it or not to destabilize the country.

You are right Pat about the Russians trying to destroy our country from within….and they proved their effectiveness during the past election when with inside help they put out all kinds of horrible things about Trumps opponent on social media.

So that begs the question as to why, after bipartisan congressional approval of sanctions on Russia, Trump is holding back..still after all this time. Is it because Putin owns Trump?? yes it is.
Trump is Putins bitch and he will do exactly as Putin says even if it destroys his own country. and that is sooo sad. EVen more sad though is that the Republican side of congress is sitting back worrying more about their own reelection than standing up for their country. Mr McConnell won’t even bring a vote to the floor because his wife is one of Trumps cabinet members and he does not want her to lose her cushy job….

They do nothing but distort the truth.

Maybe starting with not calling someone a white man or a black man but referring them as they are. A “white skinned man” a “black skinned man”or the man who robbed the package store had white skin. The man who won the mvp had tan colored skin. It isn’t really necessary in many conversations to even mention the color of a mans skin. It seems only when it is derogatory that the skin color matter to anyone especially the press. I guess it is important if the police are in the lookout for a person and need to have an accurate description of that person but when describing a situation that doesn’t require the skin color it seems the skin color is added almost fueling racism. The two black teens who robbed the store were caught late last night by the police. Why does skin color have to be added in that sentence? It attracts attention in news print and in news stories. The “black man” should not be a noun as it is one word, it should be an adjective and a noun used together.

or for that matter if the person weighs 350 pounds why fat shame them by saying ” the man was on the large side”. Or embarrass him by saying he was balding. Or make fun of his disability because he limped?

The police could just have a boilerplate silhouette of a man or woman and say, “be on the lookout for this person”.

I know you “guys” like to banter a little and maybe set a few traps if you can from time to time which is fine, but I did say that when the police were on the lookout for a person a description is necessary and that skin color is obviously important. It is simple that the description after the fact doesn’t need to be the black man or the white man. At that point he is just a man and skin color is irrelevant.

Dan,

Very well written piece, with lots of perspective. Black Lies Matter was founded on a lie – Michael Brown never had his hands up and never said don’t shoot. Instead, he tried stealing the officers’ gun to execute him. If Black Lives Matters really cared about black people, their focus would be on black on black homicide, which is astronomical compared to white on white, and they would be pro-life. Here is a link to an article by Heather McDonald which spells it out nicely:

https://nypost.com/2017/09/26/all-that-kneeling-ignores-the-real-cause-of-soaring-black-homicides/

The bottom line is black people make up only about 13 percent of the population but kill more people than white people, who vastly outnumber black people. And guess who they are predominately killing? Other black people. Yikes!

https://www.dailysignal.com/2017/10/04/left-ignore-black-black-crime/

And about the graffiti in Roxbury, “White” was painted months ago, and some race baiter probably painted “lives matter” recently. Check out this link and you can see the lettering doesn’t even match. Twanna Brawley anyone?

https://turtleboysports.com/google-earth-images-clearly-show-the-white-lives-matter-hate-speech-graffiti-in-roxbury-was-already-there-in-july-and-we-took-down-their-facebook-page-for-hate-speech/

What Henry Gates, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and the Starbucks Duo all have in common is they didn’t follow simple police directives, and had they done so, none would have been arrested or killed. The history of slavery and discrimination against black people is abhorrent. Here is a link to a Washington Post article about the lunch counter sit ins back in 1960. The difference between then and now, however, is the customers were willing to make a purchase:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2018/04/17/before-video-of-a-starbucks-arrest-images-of-lunch-counter-sit-ins-helped-launch-a-movement/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.3f3fc66bb6b0
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2018/04/17/before-video-of-a-starbucks-arrest-images-of-lunch-counter-sit-ins-helped-launch-a-movement/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.3f3fc66bb6b0

How do we know the Starbucks manager called the police because the customers were black? Can anyone just hang out in Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, Panera, or wherever all day and mooch WIFI and not even buy a cup of coffee? The Starbucks duo had plenty of opportunity to leave on their own, but they chose to be arrested and removed by the police instead. Dumb decision for two would be businessmen.

Nice of the CEO of Starbucks to throw the store manager under the bus for doing her job and following company policy. And now 8,000 stores will close so thousands of people can get bias training because why exactly? Because Starbucks had a policy that required a purchase to go along with your loitering? Just change the got damn policy for Pete’s sake, if you want to turn your store into a hangout joint. I say the manager has a great case for monetary damages.

Actually, chip seal is a very effective road surface maintenance treatment when used properly, which is 2-4 years after a road is repaved. Chip seal is not effective when the road surface is degraded to alligator/block cracking or when the pavement base is damaged (usually drainage problems)

Re: Berkshire’s tourist jobs are part of the area’s economic inequality

Alan Chartock states: “Let us not forget that our industry [in Berkshire County] is tourism and that includes second-home ownership. These folks support our stores and services and you really can’t have it both ways.”

My response to Alan Chartock is that the tourism industry does not trickle down to living wage jobs that can support a family.

The fact remains that Pittsfield and the Berkshire region is one of the most economically unequal areas in the state and nation. There are no living wage jobs for the average worker in Pittsfield/Berkshire County!

The only way you can secure a living wage job in Pittsfield/Berkshires is to be politically connected to the local Good Old Boys network. Moreover, to be connected to the G.O.B., you have to come from one of the select inbred interrelated, multigenerational local families. Or, you have to kiss their dirty behinds and do their bidding, or even their dirty work.

Nearly all the living wage private sector jobs have moved out of Berkshire County over the past several generations. All that is left is public, education, and not-for-profit jobs. Those taxpayer-funded jobs are controlled by the de facto one political party provincial system ran by political hacks like Alan Chartock’s beloved Rep. Smitty Pignatelli.

To put it another way, hell would freeze over before someone like me would find a living wage job in Pittsfield! To reframe it once more, I would have a better chance winning the lottery jackpot than finding a job in Pittsfield where I could support a family.

Sometimes I believe that Alan Chartock lives in an “Ivory Tower” where arts, culture, tourism, and phony political hacks have more weight that the realities of severe economic inequality, and the corrupted system where the G.O.B. runs the show so their relatives get the remaining taxpayer-funded living wage jobs.

Alan Chartock isn’t worried about people without jobs. He lives here in Berkshire County with LOTS of wealth for himself and is looking out for his wealthy friends in the tourist industry. He is also a big PROGRESSIVE. Just more hypocrisy.

Mr. Melle,

Your diatribe is getting old. Not everyone that is stuck in Pittsfield is connected to the GOB. There are plenty of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, doctors, nurses, etc that obtained jobs because of their education and skills in their field. And same goes for rank and file teachers, and for civil service jobs, such as police, fire, postal workers, you take a written test, and if you score high enough, you get hired, assuming you are not damaged goods, physically, mentally, or morally. The bottom line is, if you were not sucking off the taxpayers tit, you would get a job or starve, or mooch from a food bank. Get a life son.

Despite attacks and just general apathy concerning the G-Mans involved and prolonged fight against the phony water process over at the City Council chambers, he will continue his Crusade to kill a mega project not needed in the scope of the recommendation by the millions for hired consultants? Meetings will be Monday-Finance…Tuesday City Council.

The first Vote Which would have destroyed taxpayers, was voted down by four Councilors, and see no reason to change, citizens who are lining up at the local garages and services like, body and Muffler repair shops fixing their autos, with bearings, rotors, body rot, tires, breaks, name a few. There are other burden that taxpayer neglect cost the homeowner, water in this case isn’t one of them. The millions these Consultants are being paid is a testament to the Nature of this process. Validating the Consultants proposal for a new plant is an insult. Gaetani will be prepared for us next week. Be there,Sheep.

Candace Owen, an African American woman, says that the Democratic party wants African Americans to think like victims. Instead she says they need to get rid of the victim mentality and think like victors. She has received all kinds of negative comments about her ideas on social media, but she stands by them. She went on to say that the Democratic party needs to keep African Americans thinking like victims in order to keep them weak and dependent to insure that they keep voting Democrat.

Gaetani, by trying to do what he has been,Doing Sheep, does another wonderful thing beside not sending many out of their homes. By saving millions, or trying to, the workforce benefits at contract time as it freezes up intended expenditures Not Needed, and he will explain that tomorrow at the Finance Meeting. He will welcome All Challengers. If the seven try to reinvent the wheel at taxpayer expense, it will literally be like throwing popcorn against a Battleship.

Article in iBerkshires about how Tricia Farley wants more money for preschool. This girl thinks money grows on trees in Pittsfield. People who are independently wealthy should not be making decisions for blue collar taxpayers. Vote her out and get anybody else to take her place. She is not representing the people but rather a lobbyist for special interests.

She also wants to give David Carver $200,000 towards the St Mary’s project. She said this:

“This year my priority is going to be the morning star housing project at St. Mary’s Church. There are some funding gaps there,”

Mr. Carver already is getting a tax break and now she wants to give him back almost half of what he paid for the property. Should have just let DD build there. DD would be paying taxes already and did not ask for one dime from taxpayers.
