PITTSFIELD’s MAYORAL RACE: THE DABBLERS, THE DILLITANTES, AND THE REAL DEAL

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY JULY 15, 2019) — Open season during a campaign year falls between early April and late July, when nomination papers can be had for the asking. The meaning of this civic ink-blot test clarifies when papers have to be filed on deadline, determining who wins a spot on the ballot.

The dabblers are the first to show their pattern. They’re the ones who, for whatever reason, take out papers just to take out papers. Usually it’s the unsettling desire to “get their name” in print. Such people have no intention of actually running or contributing to public life. They simply want a way to temporarily ease their insecurities about themselves. They are perpetual wannabees.

Next come the dillitantes. They’re the ones who turn in enough certified signatures to get their name on the ballot but will not run a campaign. There are two potential dillys running for mayor this year, Karen Kalinwsky and Scott Graves. Neither has yet shown the earnestness and resolution required for voters to take them seriously. THE PLANET refers to organization, money, and effort.

  • Organization — We have yet to see any indication of a campaign from either Kalinowsky or Graves. An organization includes a visible and accessible campaign headquarters, staffed, along with workers and representatives in each of the city’s seven wards and respective precincts.
  • Money — To compete in a mayoral contest, one needs, at minimum, $5,000. Actually, that amount would just get you to the next level. More like $20,000 and up would be a sufficient figure. This would pay for signage, literature, HQ, ads, and the like. There are only two ways to get this. You either supply it yourself, or you raise it. The first puts the money where the mouth is and extracts a personal price, literally. The second means setting up and enduring the indignities of endless coffee hours, solicitation phone calls, fund raisers, and other assorted side shows. You also end up owing your contributors. Will K & G show the dough?
  • Effort — A actual candidate accepts all invitations, knocks on countless doors, speaks to anyone, addresses any group, no matter how insignificant. They will be relentless in being seen and heard. They will think of everything and leave out nothing to get their message across. Will the celebrated K and G hoof it to the extent of giving up their “normal” lives for a couple of months? They’re unknown. They’re going against an incumbent mayor with major backing and a popular councilor at-large whose supporters have been waiting for their big chance. Unless Kalinowsky and Graves outwork everyone else, they might as well forget it.

So far, all we’ve seen from Kaliowsky is a long letter to The Boring Broadsheet. She told The BB that she has 15 siblings, thus revealing her secret plan to win. She’s going to get all her relatives to vote for her. Graves has a FB campaign site with nothing on it. There are no photos, no policy statements, nothing. He’s a contractor, which means he won’t be getting any city business anytime soon.

We hope this changes, with K & G investing in the three essential ingredients necessary to compete. Otherwise, the two dillys are giving us yet another round of the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. If we’ve seen all they intend giving the electorate, Linda Tyer and Melissa Mazzeo can keep their powder dry until after the preliminary election in September. They’re the real deal.

That’s when the true campaign will begin.

I want to know what each candidate’s AGENDA is for Pittsfield politics.

If I was a mayoral candidate, I would shut down PEDA because it has failed on every level. I would stop raising municipal taxes by 5% each fiscal year. I would stand up to the big 3 public unions. I would stop giving millions of additional taxpayer dollars per academic year to the overpriced public school system. I would focus on public safety. I would retain and add living wage jobs by being business friendly.

Linda Tyer, what is your agenda for 2020 – 2023?

Melissa Mazzeo, what is your agenda?

Which candidate has the better agenda? Why?

Yup. Both goin nowhere in a hurry. And it’s not to say I won’t necessarily vote for one of them, but they’ve got to inform the voters and give us a reason to vote for them. Being a hard worker isn’t close to being enough.

And Mazzeo and Tyer are two peas in a pod – Whenners, feminist progressives (which are the worst type), and tax and spenders. I’ll call Tyer Taxes and Mazzeo Spender but their names are indistinguishable, just like the two lions Dan named that once graced the city hall steps. Probably got sold to have some money for more freebies for the GOBSIGs.

If it comes down to personality’s, and it’s looking like it will, Taxes will walk in – she’s sweet, syrupy, generally a nice and decent person, with a nice way about her, whereas Spender is seen as, well shall I say it – “itchy”, not to say I won’t vote for her, just that it won’t make a difference

Candidates who promise to raise taxes, candidates who promise not to not raise taxes, and candidates who promise not to raise taxes less, what a selection

I am happy to have a choice other than Tyer, who has turned a city in decline into a city of hopelessness. And that would not be Mazzeo who has special interest candidate written all over her. She might as well rent a billboard that proclaims such. Actually her and Tyer could share the expense of one though neither one seems budget savvy enough to do so.

So even if my vote for an alternative candidate bears no fruit at least I will not have it on my conscientious that I aided and abetted the assault on seniors and taxpayers clinging to their property.

It isn’t about raising or not raising taxes, its about level funding from the previous administration and trying to get elected without stepping on toes. It’s a popularity popularity contest, plain and simple. A recipe for disaster.

I would like to see everyone seeking election to the corner office and council to put on their agenda and agree to have a complete independent colonoscopy (Audit) done of Pittsfield’s finances.Taxpayers need to see what, where and why.

Seems to me that the city should change auditing firms. We have been using Scanlon for at least 15 years!
In business the firm or the lead auditor is changed every 3, 4 or 5 years.
Just my opinion.

Yuki For Pittsfield

Having our first campaign contribution check from PITTSFIELD Royalty is humbling and electrifying at the same time!! Thank you so so so much Andrea. For the time, the wisdom, sage advice about not just politics but life too, and your story! How incredibly fascinating! Andrea was our state senator for ten years, right before Ben Downing. His story is riveting! His dad, from a family of 7 (from Sicily) and his mom, from a family of 13 ( from Poland). Lineage of judges, mayor (his aunt was the very first female mayor in PITTSFIELD). Just wow. And your incredible contributions to this great city as state senator (The Colonial, Burbank park, central Block and more). So grateful and inspiring! Thank you for your contribution and your support. Eternally grateful and it is an honor to have a chance to participate in carrying your torch in continuing to build out this great city! “As goes PITTSFIELD, goes Berkshire County”. And possibly the world.

We are supposed to not talk about Pittsfield’s Royalty on Dan Valenti’s awesome blog. Therefore, I have no comment about Pittsfield’s Prince.

Is the person who wrote about the donation a real name? I wouldn’t want anyone publishing each time I made a donation. But I guess that is transparency.

I thought the ‘fix’ was in for Yuki so I am surprised they would comment like that. She must surely be head and shoulders over Rivers even if it is a ‘fix’. She might have good sense in the public school issues too if she has children and is a working parent.

Exactly. An illegal does what Epstein is accused of the whole lot of them are bad. Trump maybe needs to know there are more vile Americans legal, that are the reason crime per capital person is far more prevalent among naturalized Americans, than illegals breaking the laws. All the meanwhile right here in Pittsfield we are number 4 in crime?

All fluff and no stuff. Another colossal waste of your tax dollars. Hinds is another waste of money and just think of all the wasted money in the people in the photo not to mention the cost of the signs and installation. But wait. It’s a got darn economic engine for Adams’ sake.

Can anyone here prove that Michelangelo did not use spray paint on the Sistine Chapel? My great great grandfather seems to think he did. He says that as a child they would steal cans from behind the altar whilst Mich was hanging upside down like a bat from a rope tied to the ceiling joists spraying with a can in both hands.
While spray paint may not have been available to the general public back then apparently if you knew a guy who knew a guy you could get it.

Late to the party but 8 years ago Dan Valenti ran for mayor. Was he a dillitante, or a dabbler who, for whatever reason, took out papers just to take out papers or was it an unsettling desire to “get his name” in print. Perhaps he simply wanted a way to temporarily ease insecurities about himself.
