(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION MAY 22-4, 2020) — THE PLANET has lived through three previous pandemics. We’re now on our fourth.
The pandemics:
- In 1957-8, the Asian flu, left 1.1 million people dead worldwide (116,000 in the U.S.).
- In 1968, the Hong Kong flu struck. One million died (118,000 in America).
- In 2009, H2N2 hit. World mortality total of 575,000 (12,469 in the U.S.).
We shall leave out “minor” outbreaks such as Ebola and Mogo-on-the Ga-GoGo.
Of the 1957-8 and 1968 events, we should point out that the country’s populations were 48% and 38% respectively smaller than today, greatly enlarging the relative value of the numbers for those years. Population today: 330,749,556 and growing … 1957: 171,984,130 … 1968: 205,805,755. In those previous situations, people took reasonable precautions, accepted the risks, and the United States of America not only kept functioning but kept doing so as the world’s leading superpower. We didn’t pull an instant shutdown, the equivalent of driving a car at 80 mph into a brick wall.

Scientists say there are hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of viruses that accompany mankind on our terrestrial voyage. Most serve a useful purpose and actually makes life possible. Only six are known to infect and debilitate humans, and four of those cause the common cold, of which there are many variations that cross over into influenza. Only SARS and the COVID viruses mess with us in a serious fashion, and we’ve already handled SARS without taking a shotgun to our heads while jumping off the 14th floor of the Crowne Plaza.
But this is 2020.
We are now into our second generation of
- Overprotecting children
- Establishing “Safe Places” on college campuses — college, mind you, not pre-school.
- Social media and the G-FIIDD virus — the Great, Fear-Inducing, Intellectual Dumbing Down.
- 24/7 news cycle dominated by broadcast news and its need for hysteria, alarm, and “gotta look” entertainment (recent NBC News headline: “As World Shelters, Scientists Raise Alarm on Another Threat: An Active Hurricane Season” … CBS News: “Ominous Trend in American West Could Signal Looming Megadrought”).
- Helicoptering parents
- Every kid gets a trophy.
- A need for overstimulation and sensory overload, whether it’s shopping, gaming, or going to a ballpark. “Big” must be “bigger” must be “biggest.” “Much” must always be “more.” Too much is never enough.
- Young people who expect life and work on THEIR terms, with whims satisfied and indulgences granted.
- Youth teams that no longer keep score, lest one side know the life-altering disappointment of losing.
- A religious belief in unending growth.
- An inability to productively handle setbacks and failure.
We could go on, but the point is made, here and elsewhere. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich recently wrote an essay written around this very theme. Gingrich found himself stranded in Rome, and he used the enforced shutdown to retreat within himself and sharpen his senses when he turned his gaze outward again, a rare example of that odd species politicus erectus turning in a performance more comfortable in literature than in polemics.
America leads the league not in the gentrification but in the pussification of the population, as our national response to COVID-19 illustrates — a misdirected reaction that produced the world’s greatest number of cases and fatalities. In the process, we turned what was and shold have remained a dangerous but manageable medical situation into economic suicide, social devastation, and even greater political division. We made many huge mistakes. THE PLANET would finger our technological hubris as the biggest, specifically our reliance on modeling. Fed by nerd techies, scientists and researchers developed algorithms to for a series of projections on how the virus might affect us. The models “proved” everything from “not much worse than a bad cold” to a “species-ending Black Plague.” Naturally, the worst-case cases got the publicity: “2.2 million deaths expected” blared the trumpets.
Then and there, the battle was lost.
In the end, historians will look back on this battle with COVID-19 and observe that, in America, the real contagion was hysteria.

We are in a global corona-virus pandemic, thousands of people are dying everyday, people with preexisting health problems are at great risk, nursing homes account for 1/3 of COVID-19 deaths, 40 million American people lost their jobs and health insurance, Berkshire County’s summer tourism season is lost, states face billion dollar budget deficits, while local governments face million dollar budget deficits, sports are gone, Broadway is closed through Labor Day, but all that matters is the almighty dollar? The irony is that when you die, you can be worth millions of dollars, but you cannot take it with you.
Of course it is about the almighty dollar, which I am fine with. I don’t know about you, but I have never worked for a broke person before.

Re: Open letter to Patrick Fennell
Hello Pat,
The U.S. Senate, along with the U.S. House, took the entire month of April of 2020 off, and then the U.S. Senate reconvened on May 4, 2020 through May 21, 2020 – or nearly 3 weeks. After the U.S. House of Representatives passed a new stimulus bill worth $3 trillion, the U.S. Senate did not pass even one piece of legislation relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting on Friday, May 22, 2020, the U.S. Senate is on a new 10-day long recess until they reconvene on June 1, 2020.
That means between the months of April and May of 2020, which total 61 days, the U.S. Senate convened for 18 days. During our time of need for leadership from Capitol Hill, nothing got passed legislatively by both chambers of U.S. Congress relating to the corona-virus pandemic in April or May of 2020.
In closing, U.S. Congress is not helping “We the People” during our time of need. Instead, they are more interested on being on paid vacation and raising money for their political campaigns during this 2020 election year that will decide their fates for partisan control of the U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and The White House.

Like you, I neither believe in nor support pork barrel spending. The Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives should not have used the COVID-19 pandemic for political ends. That does not mean the Republicans in the U.S. Senate were right to neglect the COVID-19 pandemic for two whole months (April and May of 2020).
2020 is an election year that will decide which political party will control the White House, U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump and Biden, McConnell and Pelosi, and company, all are more interested in raising money from billionaire-funded Super PACs and K Street corporate PACs than showing any real leadership in addressing the needs of the millions of American people suffering from the impacts and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In closing, pork barrel projects and PACs come first, while the COVID-19 pandemic goes unaddressed on Capitol Hill and in the White House. What a shame!

For decades, Massachusetts had a pork barrel project called Boston’s “Big Dig”, which has killed innocent people, leaks millions of gallons of dirty water everyday, will only last around 50 years, and then its leaky tunnels will eventually be submerged in the Atlantic Ocean. My dad, who was a Berkshire County Commissioner, spoke out about Boston’s “Big Dig” pork barrel politics when Governors Bill Weld then the late Paul Cellucci hypocritically said that Berkshire County government should be abolished and taken over by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts due to inefficiencies. The price of Boston’s “Big Dig” doubled during Weld’s time as Governor. It had a $2 billion cost overrun during the late Cellucci’s time as Governor. In the end, Berkshire County government was abolished, but Boston’s “Big Dig” still stands as Exhibit A in pork barrel government spending at its worst.

It is painfully clear from the article in iberkshires that Jake McCandless is unable to make major school decisions that need to be made. After whining about state funding probably being cut, Jake & the out-to-lunch School Committee have passed a level-funded budget. This is THE time to close 1-2 schools due to the ever-declining student population. Jake states that “it costs about $5.5 million annually to operate a building in the district.” So if Chapter 70 funding is reduced by 10% – a decrease of $4.7 million – problem solved. The student population has been in decline FOR YEARS, YET the plan for facilities has yet to be revealed. His inaction speaks volumes.

Far left Governors are refusing to open their states until there is a vaccine for COVID-19. Hong Kong, right next to China, and with a fast train from Wuhan, never shut down during COVID-19. They had 4 deaths. Hong Kong has 7 million people as compared to 8 million in New York City and Hong Kong is even more densely populated, but they carried on business as usual. New York City has had 20,000 deaths so far. In Hong Kong they wore paper thin masks, hand sanitized, stayed home if necessary without a government order to do so, and were extremely cautious without their government having to do a massive lockdown. They have had this happen in the past since they are right next to China and its virus outbreaks so Hong Kong citizens know how to protect themselves.

Masks work even if flawed by changing the probability of asymptomatic spreading. The “over reaction” is, I think, rational given what we don’t know about this virus and our susceptibility to it. You may only have a .5% chance of dying but your chance of long term problems is much higher.

I agree with your overview. We are fighting an enemy we do not fully understand. This virus is coming at us from several different angles and we need to know a lot more about it. If we had or were doing more testing, a lot more testing, we would have more data to analyze to help us understand more about this rogue animal. It’s now been found that a number of states (and you can be there’s more and MA is going to be one of the worst) have misreported numbers and undercounted positive tests or over counted negative tests.
I know that BHS has done this. They have coded positive tests to “unknown” as the location to reduce the Berkshires overall count.
They have double counted positive tests, either by counting verification tests twice, if you got swabbed and rapid tested as a verification they would count that as two negatives not just the one.
They counted swab and antibody tests as two negatives.
When patients who were sick got tested prior to release they’d be tested over a period of days, each negative was counted as a separate negative test but each positive was counted as a single positive test.
This makes the testing capacity seem higher and clearly makes it seem like there are many more negatives versus positives.
I am telling you and have been, BHS has been doing these things and it gives no clear picture of COVID in the berkshire. There are many more who have it and our testing is below standard.
I’m not saying don’t open things up, I’m saying when the numbers are wrong, relying on them is a waste of time.

“Look, the thing, you know what it is,” Biden said. “The womenfolk know what’s at stake in this election. It’s hairy simple. Just let me vote on you, or you vote for me, the vote, b-b-b-blond applesauce baloney. Simple choice. If you don’t let me smell your hair, you ain’t a woman!” Biden then sat back in his chair with a smile, having “totally nailed” another interview.
The female interviewer blinked a couple of times and followed up with some clarifying questions. “Mr. Vice President Biden, sir, if I may follow up on that, did you just say that if a woman doesn’t let you stick your nose in her hair then she’s not a real woman?”
“I b-didn’t think I could possibly be more not clear!” Biden said with a perplexed look on his face. “If you don’t let me personally walk up behind you unannounced and bury my shnozzola deep within your flowing locks of cascading curly hair, YOU AIN’T A REAL WOMAN! NO MALARKEY!”
Witnesses then walked in on Biden conversing with a Cabbage Patch doll who he mistook for a female interviewer. After hearing the news, feminists around the country responded by lining up outside Biden’s house to get a complimentary hair sniff, thereby affirming their statuses as real women.
Cheshire is picking up road trash and showing great pride in the place they live. Pittsfield on the other hand, just keeps adding to it hoping that the weeds and grass will grow high enough to cover it. While the whole city is messy, Ward One is by far the worst. Come on Johnny Absurdo, Pittsfield is dynamic and vibrant. Yet, the filth in Pittsfield is terrible. The potholes in Pittsfield are terrible. The traffic violations in Pittsfield are completely out of control, yet you see cruisers just parked in parking lots while the officers just stare at their computers. Homeless are just lying on the sidewalks. Tyler Street is a playground for prostitutes and drug deals. Just noticed on another blog that the Mayor’s right hand assistant Roberta has spent almost 8 hours today on Facebook arguing with other posters about graduation banners that Pittsfield will finally put up. Wondering if our tax monies pay Roberta double time on Sundays to protect the Mayor from comments made by upset tax payers? Really sad state Pittsfield is currently in. Guess our Mayor, Chief of Police and DPW Manager just don’t care.

I received a conservative political email this Sunday evening that said Democrats are “socialist, Jew-Hating, Do-Nothing Democrats”.
I believe it is wrong for conservatives to call Democrats “Jew-Hating” because it is demagoguery and a lie.

I read that Stephen Bannon is back closely working with Stephen Miller on Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign. The two far-right Trump supporters are going to make China into our country’s enemy like Hitler made the Jewish people Nazi Germany’s enemy.
Our country has a long history of discriminating and hating the Chinese people. Trump, Bannon, and Miller are using century old politics against the Asian race of Chinese people to win reelection in 2020.
