PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

ADD 1 JULY 13, 12:10 p.m. — This just in from Pittsfield police chief Michael Wynn:

On Sunday 7/12/2020 shortly after 9:00pm members of the Pittsfield Police Department (PPD) responded to two separate ShotSpotter Activations.  The first incident occurred in the parking lot of the Berkshire Peak apartment complex at 341 West Street and the second occurred minutes later near the intersection of Columbus Avenue and South John Street.

Shell casings were discovered at both locations and early indications are that the incidents are related.  At this time it is believed that at least two individuals were shooting at one another at each location.  No injuries have been reported.

Anyone who wishes to provide information regarding this case is asked to contact the PPD detective bureau at 413-448-9705 or Detective Bertelli-Hunt at 413-448-9700 x532.  Information can also be provided anonymously via the Detective Bureau Tip Line at 413-448-9706, or by texting PITTIP and your message to TIP411 (847411).

———- ooo ———-

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY JULY 13, 2020) — THE PLANET begins  by expressing our philosophical contempt for nationalism.

When you look at “Earthrise,” the famous photo taken December 1968 by Apollo 8 astronaut Frank Borman, you see land, clouds, and ocean. No borders, walls, divisions — those artificial delimiters only show up on globes, maps, and Google Earth. There are no “Americans,” “Chinese,” “Africans.” We are all, we are only, earthlings.

A fence, wall, barrier, or other line of demarcation presumes an inherent rationale for private property, a dubious presumption. Try finding the title to a property. Go to the registry and trace back all claims. The books will take you so far. If those books could somehow uncover the first claim, you would find some person or group simply seizing territory, saying it’s theirs, and erecting borders virtue of Superior Force, a discipline that has never gone out of vogue.

There you have both the beginning of war and the concept of private property. Vast holdings, empires even, were there for the taking, providing one were strong and ruthless enough and had the crossbows, maces, guns, and nukes to defend their arbitrary claims. The millennia that heaped the stamp of law upon those morally unsupported claims makes ownership seem legitimate, but that too is a convention carried by a hoax.

The only way we could have advanced as a species was communally. As the human population grew, loose collections of tribes became villages became fiefdoms became city states, became civilization. Laws developed to check the malcontents. With laws came regulation of social and cultural life, plus an even more important need: To develop portable, stable currency.

Capital. Money to create. Money to spend.

And the Capitalist. Money used to make money.

———- ooo ———-

In 1970, art historian Kenneth Clark presented his monumental “personal view” of civilization in the 13-part BBC series of the same name. He identified five requirements of civilization:

  • Belief in reason
  • A sense of justice
  • A love of beauty
  • A sense of permanence
  • A forward-looking mentality.

All in equilibrium.

Ay, there’s the rub.

Industrialization enhanced these qualities but in unequal measure, and the Industrial Revolution of the mid-19th century ushered in the dominance of “capital.”

“I’ll get mine at the expense of yours, because I will move faster, quicker, riskier, and more aggressively.”

What a perfect companion to Darwin.

The rise of the machines moved the growing population from the farms into urban centers. With this migration came the citified horrors of slums, deprivation, poverty, starvation, ignorance, and neglect. A social worker named Engels wrote about the ravages extracted by poverty. A penniless philosopher named Marx read Engels, though as Clark observes, hardly anyone else did.

But Marx was enough.

There are no nations except those whose borders were laid by pioneers, erected by war, and defended with arms against fellow humans. That’s what we have been as a species, one chromosome removed from chimps but far behind in ethics — an invented moral quality the innocent do not need. Other forms of life also don’t need Original Sin or other superstitious creations meant to account for why modern man hates himself and satisfy the immature mob-urge for certainty. Marx read Engles and provided certainty. The downtrodden fell for the ruse, same as they fell for Jesus … or what and who Christians claim as Jesus no thanks to St. Paul.

———- ooo ———-

Returning to property, borders, and nationalism, as a practical THE PLANET of course must acknowledge the practical “reality” of local, regional, state, national, and international “territories.” Each one creates and holds dear some symbol, typically a flag. Nationalists load the flag with symbols meant to stand for every virtue of collective belief. On Flag Day June 14, a day that honors Old Glory, the nation hardly took notice. But when we began to lose our collective minds over racism, historical revisionists zeroed in on that other American flag, Stars and Bars, the banner of the Confederate States of America.

ANTIFA, BLM, urban terrorists, millennials, and baristas at Dotties demanded the Stars and Bars join the statues of Columbus, Jefferson, Washington, Grant, and Lincoln in the bonfire of the vanities — a phrase Tom Wolfe stole from Savonarola. They loaded into the CSA flag every evil, hate, and bitterness their hearts could conjure.

In doing so, an infectious hysteria has gripped the nation, an ideological equivalent of COVID-19. They have allowed the symbols to take root in their own hearts, an inversion of hatred for which they were not immunized and for which they were unprepared.

The antidote, fortunately, is to realize that any flag, particularly one for a nation that has been extinct 155 years, is only a piece of cloth.

It Is Only A Piece of Cloth.

It Can’t Hurt You.

It is only this, and nothing more.

21st Century American Capitalism = Head means Wall Street wins, Tails mean “the Have Nots” lose. It is reverse Socialism or reverse “Robin Hood”.
21st Century American Economy = U.S.A.’s #1 non-farm export is military weaponry and related technologies. Wall Street profits off of a militarized World. “Lawyers, Guns, & Money”!
21st Century American Politics = “Guns & Butter”, which means a record setting nearly 2 decade long war in Afghanistan and a 2003 illegal invasion of Iraq based on lies concerning Iraq having WMDs when it did not. We took over control of Iraq’s 2nd largest oil reserves in the World. Plus, we passed 4 major tax cuts for “the Haves”. (Saudi Arabia has the largest oil reserves in the World).
Lastly, Karl Marx never lived in a Communist or Socialist country. Yet, he wrote that the masses would be better off in one. How would he know? Now every Socialist policy is derided by the label “Marxist”. What is the alternative? People still have to live in apartments or homes, have access to health insurance to be healthy, have access to gainful employment to earn a living, have food and water to eat and drink for their nourishment, and have schools to learn in.

And now our progressive and politically correct school committee is going to discuss getting rid of the Taconic “Braves” at their next meeting. Does anybody have the jewels to put an end to such b.s.?

making a fine appearance.

Obviously Braves is a very insulting word. Let’s go with the Taconic Milktoasts and the team mascot can be a pink teddy bear. The Logo on the helmet could be an infant sucking on its mothers tit.

We have got to start paying attention to the real facts re:covid 19. The real facts are that keeping our schools closed will have a devastating impact on our young people. Many other countries have opened their schools with little or no covid issues. Many students have not and will not apply themselves to do the necessary learning/work needed online to be successful. Those who want to keep the schools closed politicians/ teachers (given the real facts) Do not care about students . This is a purposeful perpetrated sham that must not come to fruition.

The books “Animal Farm” and “1984” need to be required reading for everyone right now. Read these books again even if you have already read them years ago. In Animal Farm it’s all about creating “Equality” similar to our “Social Justice Warriors” of today. They soon create a situation in Animal Farm in which some animals are more equal than others and the whole thing turns into a nightmare. These books were written as warnings of what happens when misguided attempts are made to make everything equal in society. It’s frightening that everything mentioned in those books is what is happening now.

Dan remember the old basketball league at the Boys Club, it was called the Midget League. Where was the furor over that? Braves is fine, what is the big deal? When we look back at all the past glory these athletes and their successes, the phrase the State Champions that year will still be the Taconic Braves? I suppose Warriors is next or have they already got rid of that? And what about Generals, they are a specific entity related to War or how about those stinking Pirates from Pittsburgh? Change that also?

Since the taxpayer is paying for all this crap put it on a referendum and change or not that way. Better not these liberals will win.

The Germans do not, are not allowed to, fly the nazi flag. The same should apply to the confederacy. They were, according to them, a defeated “nation.” The symbol of that flag may be freighted with massive baggage but the fact remains; they were traitors to our nation, driven by the desire for free, slave labor, and their flag should not be allowed…just like the nazis.

Hardly dubious. The confederate flag stands for hatred, bigotry, and has been used to intimidate people for years. There’s a reason Germany outlawed Nazi flags, America should do the same with the confederate flag. If it was the Italians, the Irish or the Polish who had been kept as slaves, raped, beaten, bought and sold, I’m sure people of those nationalities would be looking at this very differently. The best way to understand how someone feels is to imagine yourself in their position. It’s called empathy and is a very effective tool that would serve most people very well in life.

I agree, they were conquered and to a lot of people it’s offensive. Not sure what the enactments in Gettysburg will have for takers for the confederate side. There is a church in Gettysburg where the pews are still stained from soldiers blood. I don’t know if you have every walked around Gettysburg but it has an ‘atmosphere’ – makes a person believe in ghosts.

BTW, I suggest the Taconic ‘PCBs’ as the new name. That sums things up pretty good, poor kids.

Also go to the city website and under property put in your name or address. go to “property report” and check to see if you are being taxed for home improvements that you do not have. I know a guy who is being taxed for a refinished attic. His attic was never touched. Probably hundreds of folk paying for improvements that do not exist.

More stupidity from AOC in saying that hunger is driving the violence in big cities and also that more money thrown at the police over the years isn’t preventing the violence. Wonder why AOC doesn’t say that throwing money at the schools isn’t making kids smarter, but she wouldn’t say that because the far left needs the schools mainly for indoctrination purposes and not actual education. Hunger is causing the violence and not the racial tensions stirred up by the far left and their use of Antifa to keep the violence going in big cities? Not the fact that police are being defunded in big cities and in many cases told to stand down when it comes to violence? AOC doesn’t want to solve problems. She wants to create chaos.

Great commentary Dan. Couldn’t agree more. Problem is, that by the time we all come to finally realize on a planetary basis that nationalism must end, we’ll both be long dead and gone.

Pat
Pat

When it comes to Nationalism I think that looking out for your own country doesn’t mean that you ignore the needs of other countries. Just as an example, China hoarded masks and other items needed for fighting COVID-19, but our country sent ventilators and even medications to other countries. So we easily helped our own country by creating ventilators for ourselves, but we also reached out to help others too. The examples are endless of how we do this. I think we can look out for our own country and help other countries too. One world government will bring misery to the world because it will not answer the needs of individual countries, but will only be looking out for world government and that concentration of power will be dangerous and we will long for the days when each country took care of its own needs and had the power to do so.

What do you mean China hoarded masks? Whose masks were they in the first place? Can you hoard something if it belongs to you? They have over a billion people and had no idea how many they might need for their own people. Trump had the choice to make them here in America did he not? Plus, when you treat a country like shit you can’t expect them to all of a sudden be you best friend. “China Virus”

Schools can reopen if vulnerable teachers with pre-existing conditions or anyone over 60 is not allowed to teach in the classroom. Also putting kids and parents together in tight quarters 24/7 can also spread the virus. Countries that didn’t close schools have had lower infection rates.

So, Mayor Tyer plans on testing the city’s sewage so they can keep track of the excrement of citizens, in case there are those hiding their covid-19 infections from society, since their bodies and the waste they produce now belong to the state for your own safety. I wonder if planet readers could speculate on what else analyzing the city’s sewage could tell us. Would it show that city drug abuse continues to escalate? Would it show that Pete White is destroying his colon on his fine dining diet? Would it show us how truly full of it the city council and administration are?….What would you look for?

Just had my good laugh of the day. Saw on the PPD Facebook that a poster suggested that taxpayers just start sending the Mayor stool samples. By doing this it would save us hardworking taxpayers money. Priorities screwed up as usual, never mind that shootings are happening all over City, no traffic control, vandalism, garbage strewed streets, pot holes still exist, line painting and grass mowing is non-existent and the usual list of issues we all have constantly stated on this blog. Also, the School Department can’t figure out how to open schools but they can spend time on changing Taconic’s name. Anyone notice how many new For Sale signs going up all over Pittsfield? Zillow is listing 207 homes for sale. Wonder why? Another good laugh.

Re: The Berkshire Eagle should be renamed The Dirty Bird!

For over two decades now, The Dirty Bird (otherwise known as The Berkshire Eagle) has always supported GE’s position of capping a majority of its cancer causing chemicals called PCBs in Pittsfield (Mass.). The residents of Lee and Lenoxdale know that Gerry Doyle, Tom Hickey, Peter Larkin, and the like, sold out the people of Pittsfield by signing the 2000 Consent Decree with GE, along with the corrupt EPA. Everyone knows that capped leaky landfills eventually become defective, and they need to be monitored from day one and everyday after that.

How can any rational person or government bureaucrat say that the dozen-plus year cleanup of the sprawling Housatonic River will cost $576 million when GE spent over $500 million on Pittsfield’s so-called cleanup? Moreover, the heavily indebted GE has not put even one penny in a trust or escrow account towards the cleanup. Without a financial commitment, the corrupt EPA and GE are both making empty promises!

The residents and property owners of Lee and Lenoxdale will see their property values plummet if GE puts an industrial toxic waste capped leaky landfill dump in Lee (Mass.). The people were deliberately left out of the negotiating process with GE and the EPA. Pittsfield and the other Berkshire County politicians sold them out, once again.

In closing, many thousands of Pittsfield area residents have suffered from and/or died of cancer from GE’s cancer causing chemicals called PCBs. The Dirty Bird (or Berkshire Eagle) never bothers to mention that. I hope for once, The Dirty Bird (Eagle) will publish my letter so the people of Berkshire County will hear the truth instead of propaganda!

In Truth!

Re: Open letter to Patrick Fennell

Hello Pat,

The Massachusetts State Legislature has around 2.5-weeks left in its 2020 session to pass a myriad of bills, including the fiscal year 2021 state budget, before they adjourn on a 5-month-long recess. The Legislators say the main hold up is that they don’t have any money. Major budget cuts are expected, especially to local governments, while the Legislators sit on a 40 percent pay raise among other lucrative perks that are all factored into their state pensions. Meanwhile, Governor Charlie Baker still hasn’t commented on the hundreds of millions of dollars missing from the state’s unemployment account due to fraud. Some Legislators like Tricia Farley Bouvier want to raise state taxes or fees in the name of funding public education, while others are waiting for U.S. Congress to pass a new economic stimulus bill that would bailout state and local governments. I wonder how it will all turn out? My bet is that Beacon Hill’s elected officials will make out like bandits, while the people they supposedly represent will bear the brunt of a corrupt State House in Boston.

Best wishes,

Jonathan [Melle]

Of course the politicians will make out like bandits. They don’t even have to wear a masks when holding up the taxpayers.

Heads up people the homeless are out in full force. All the newly imported homeless post covid cases are walking the streets. Somehow the city ran out of money to keep the temporary shelter open at StJoes too.
A bunch showed up at BHS and were sleeping in the parking decks. Lock your cars. I was told by security there’s about 20-30 they keep kicking off of the property. That they are using the stairways as toilets.

A couple newly relocated residents were in the ER, consequences of the lifestyle.

So our taxes go up, we spend hundreds of thousands in handouts to support the homeless we bring into the community, that money runs out, and the mayor is on vacation.

The administration needs to analyze the poop ASAP. Job opportunity for a pooper scooper. One job that won’t require a connection.

Now that is funny and True! But ask yourself?is the Mayor smart enough to do that job in house without any increase in pay or extra pay? Hell no,just create a new position and make it a fifty G a year job.Better yet, don’tt hire anyone and give the in-house guy a big raise. That’s the Scoop.

The D-rats had TDS before Trump even took office.

They own the chaos from 3 1/2 years of lies, obstruction, and treason.

The RINOs were nearly as bad.

I’m gonna say that the “racist graffiti” that was printed on cardboard and neatly taped to the BLM sign in Sheffield was done by those that support “BLM”

These almost always turn out to be fake

This is the problem with the hoaxes being done country wide. What is believable and not. If it turns out to be true it is horrible and sad.

What was most effed up about all that is the DA’s statement that since the accused refused to cooperate she couldn’t do anything. Lesson to criminals – lawyer up, say nothing.
