(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY OCT. 21, 2020) — With less than two weeks before the election, the Oval Office is still up for grabs. Question is, which of the candidates’ reach exceeds their grasp?
THE PLANET did some research. A content analysis of a cross-section of media reportage in the third week of October 2016 showed Hillary Clinton comfortably ahead of Donald Trump. That’s how they were calling it. After the final two weeks of the campaign expired (lethal injection, we think), you know how that turned out. Trump as 45. Four years later, a similar analysis in the same time frame shows Joe Biden with a similar lead and predictions of victory. Do the similarities end there, or are we seeing Yogi’s “deja vu, all over again?”
Some indications:
- GOP registrations are sharply up recently in the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
- This and other factors suggest Democrat registrations and vote peaked early.
- Voter polling has been inconsistent, with most “predictive models” faulty.
- 27 million voters have cast early ballots, but the Trump campaign is drawing the greater number of new voters.
- Data analysis (not polls) of the recent Trump rally in Des Moines, Iowa shows that, 10,139 eligible voters were present.
- 48.5% were Republicans
- 29.4% were Democrats
- 25% did not vote in the 2016 election, confirmed by voter registration lists.
- 13.7% did not vote in the past four presidential elections.
- Similar analyses in Georgia, Florida, and Nevada of audiences at Trump rallies show similar numbers.
- Signs point to a Republican surge in the final two weeks.
Joe Biden’s statement on the economy, particularly taxes, stands as his most troublesome issue. Biden has a track record of raising taxes, hampering not helping the economy. For example, in 1983, Biden voted to raise the Social Security tax 50%. When the same issue came to the Senate in 1996, he voted to raise the top income tax rate to 85%.
During the first debate with Trump, Biden said his first official action as President will be to rescind Trump’s tax cuts. This would hit every American, especially the middle class, in the pocketbook by taking more money out of their pockets and sending it to the federal government. Moreover, Biden wants to tax IRA and 401Ks an additional 3%. Can the ordinary person afford these hits? Biden pledges to raise corporate taxes and take more from families making more than $400,000 a year. That may sound nice, but these are the groups that already pay the largest percentages in taxes. Added up, Biden’s tax proposals would take $4 trillion out of private pockets to feed Big Government.
Biden also has two other troubling proposals:
- He wants to end America’s right-to-work laws. This would force workers to join a union or pay an agency fee if they wish to keep working. THE PLANET worked under this socialist rule in our long tenure as adjunct professor in the English Department at Berkshire Community College. Here’s how it works. As a condition of employment and with the state’s enforcement arm via contract agreement with the Massachusetts Teacher Association, The Old Professor each year had to either (a) join the MTA or (b) opt out of the union and pay what’s called an “agency fee.” The agency fee would cost more than union membership. What do you think we chose. The term “agency fee” was never explained. We loved teaching so much we held our nose and each year forked over our $250 to the MTA. Welcome to Amerika.
- Biden proposes a $400 billion bailout for failed states that haven’t balanced their budgets and are drowning in red ink including New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California. Where would he get the money? From states with balanced budgets: Arizona, Tennessee, and Florida. That how the radical left works: They love to reward failure and punish success.
- Sad thing is that Biden said he was running as a centrist.
- In fact, he is the straw man front for a ticket that wants to turn the presidency over to the likes of Kamala Harris, Alexandra Ocasio Cortez, and the other members of The Squad — all women, by the way, and all left of Bernie Sanders.
- That’s also the left’s hypocrisy in gender politics. Harris, Cortez, and their brand win praise while a brilliant woman of conservative values such as Amy Coney Barrett faces a hatchet job. THE PLANET reminds you that Harris failed the bar exam on her first try (University of California School of Law) while Barrett placed first in her class at the University of Notre Dame’s School of Law.
Up until Election Day, we will be told of the inevitable Biden-Harris victory.
What happens the next day, however, may be a different story.

Trump recently had the largest federal deficit of over $3.1 trillion from October 1, 2019 – September 30, 2020. Trump’s tax cuts were written by corporate D.C. K Street lobbyists. Most of the Republican Party Members of U.S. Congress never read the lengthy Trump tax cut bill they all voted for. The federal government’s national debt is now over $27 trillion dollars. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, we are in the worse economic recession since the 1930’s. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs and health insurance. Millions of Americans have been infected by coronavirus. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died of coronavirus. Over 40 percent of coronavirus deaths happened in long-term care facilities. Nursing homes have been bought and sold for profit for years. Nursing homes have failed our senior citizens and Veterans, especially Holyoke’s Soldier Home. Trump could have saved tens of thousands of Americans’ lives, but he lied to the American people about Covid 19 for months. Trump could have regulated nursing homes, but he played politics instead. Wall Street’s stock prices are high, but it is only a financial shell game. Main Street has received the brunt of our country’s distressed economy. State and local governments are facing financial insolvency, while the Republican Party leadership on Capitol Hill is focusing on putting an ultra-right-wing reactionary Catholic woman Judge named Amy Coney Barrett on the U.S. Supreme Court. In closing, Trump’s economy is built on a house of cards that has hurt working class America’s pocketbooks, and the Republican Party leadership is playing politics instead of serving the American people during our time of need. (I know, Biden and the Democratic Party leadership in U.S. Congress is no better!)
Now do how Democrats helped out so much with what’s wrong with Washington over the years. The house of cards game has been going on from both parties for far too long. Wink, Wink.

Planet essentially correct. In my day the agency fee was 99% of the union dues. You’d have to appear before an MTA Star Chamber to explain why you didn’t want to join the union. I had old-timers in the building giving me dirty looks.
I joined again because at least the union would pay for the lawyer if something came up. But even the union can’t help much if you don’t have tenure, which I never got.
I doubt you’ll ever see a true right-to-work situation in the pub schools. Teachers’ unions have been the number one lobby in every single state house for a long, long time.

I’ll add the State Universities use/abuse graduate students to fill holes in lack of teaching. The Grad students do get teaching experience, sometimes students suffer, and the STATE reaps the $$$.

I taught my first course at BCC, a Comp II, in 1981. Pay was $900 something. By the time I taught my most recent course, and likely my last, I got somewhere between $3,800-3,900, top rate for length of service. I almost always taught fall, spring, and summer semesters, Typically one course per, sometimes two in fall or spring based on my availability and English Department needs. Anyone can do the math. I never looked at the money. I taught for the joy of teaching, having learned a thing or two about the writing process over the years and developing a system for sharing it with students who wanted to learn and accept direction. I taught mostly Comp I and Comp II, which used to be called Freshman Comp I and II, which, for most majors, are required courses. I also taught business writing, journalism, mass communications, expository writing, and for one semester one of my favorite teaching experiences ever — a course on the 1960s. I have also taught at Le Moyne College in the English Department there. I have had the pleasure of thousands of students over the years, and the vast majority of them were good young men and women. Wouldn’t have traded the experience for the world. I’ll let others obsess over the money I made for whatever their reasons may be. For me, the true compensation and reward was the psychic pay, which was off-the-charts.

I don’t own a house or drive a giant SUV. I don’t like the other horrible idea the far left has of piling people on top of each other in low income housing while they discourage home ownership. They want to destroy the suburbs by having them overrun with low income housing units. For five decades Joe Biden has held offices in Washington. He never held a real job in the dreaded private sector and yet his family is worth millions. He sold a house to a credit card executive for four times it’s value.
He had mentors like Robert Byrd and Strom Thurmond; both had ties to the KKK and were well known racists. He even sponsored a crime bill in the 1990s that put thousands of Blacks in prison for minor offences like drug possession. Joe spoke very highly of Robert Byrd, who did his best to defeat the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Joe has been accused of being a racist by his running mate, Kamala Harris.
The big question is why is the mainstream media not looking at the Biden/Harris ticket with half the gusto as they have gone after Trump?
One thing is certain based on the lack of smears: We know Mike Pence is an honorable and good man, because after almost four years the mainstream media have found nothing on him. We know they have searched far and wide — after all he has an “R” next to his name.
So ask why isn’t the mainstream media reporting on Biden’s past and at best sleazy behavior. Is it because they know he is not worthy of being the leader of the free world? Hating Trump is no reason to vote for a career politician with a questionable past.

Our federal government is running record setting +$3.1 trillion annual budget deficits, and our national debt is over $27 trillion. The irony of tax hikes on the upper class and corporate America is that we give it back when they ask for bailouts, which is part of the stalled stimulus bill. To illustrate, if I had to pay higher taxes, and then ran out of money, and Capitol Hill then gave me a bailout, then what would be the point of me paying higher taxes?

Cuomo, who has been continually lecturing his audience on the importance of mask wearing, received a written warning from his apartment manager about his habit of NOT wearing a mask while in public areas such as the elevator & apt. hallways, threatening him with fines unless he complies. This is the same guy who claimed he had covid, yet during his quarantine was caught walking around Long Island w/o a mask by a biker who confronted him. I wanted to let you know about some new developments. In the vibrant and dynamic downtown. One of employees partners was appointed to the Berkshires Museum board.
He works at a competing accounting firm that does biz with the city. This is good because the museum plans to ask for more money from the city in the very near future.
That’s two vibrants and two dynamics right there.
My bike path namesake is being used every day by the three people that advocated for it. We are saving lots of money on the parklets because the businesses they are in front of have to clean up the feces and needles. Also in wintertime if you have a parklet or a bike lane in front of your business you have to shovel that too.
That’s three dynamics right there.
Ticket revenues are UP, not compared to when there were actual shops and places to park but up since a week before the parklets and bike paths. Who would have ever guessed making it harder to park would be such a revenue maker, we couldn’t have planned this better if we tried.
Just remember the white zone is for commercial vehicles loading and unloading. Also the meter team is getting a little more exercise, they will park in the loading zones and watch for small line infractions on the bike patch’s now.
They were just stopping in the street but it kept blocking traffic because of that pesky one lane but we figured it out. You can’t park illegally but city vehicles can.
That’s a vibrant for sure.
In business news out projected pot revenue hit a hitch because neighbors are complaining about the smell from one of our growers. Hey kids, take one for the team! Let the green leaf grow!
