Second in a Two-Part Series
(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY AUG. 4, 2021) — THE PLANET hopes y’all realize now that Linda Tyer is no longer Tyertown. Sure, she still holds the formal title. She still has her name on the corner-office door. She still brings down her six-figures plus bennies.
However as you also probably know, Tyer has largely checked out of her responsibilities to drift in the pool doing the backstroke at the spa. She will make a token appearance here and there, now and then, but Pittsfield’s de facto mayor for all practical purposes is Deanna Ruffer, director of the Community Development Department. She’s the punch line to the old joke: “Who died and left you boss?”
That’s the major reason that you and the Kapanskis have to deal with bike-lane insanity at Nothing on North. The new traffic patterns are putting shops out of business, discouraging shoppers, and encouraging the scary “armies of the road.”
Look at the toll:
- R.J. Stohr, the city’s best jewelry shop, moves to East Street in October in a stand-alone building with plenty of FREE parking.
- Dottie’s is this close (fingers 1mm apart) from pulling out at North and Maplewood.
- The regulation Nazis dragged Carr Hadware into the Star Chamber for no good reason other than harassment.
- One source tells us they have never seen Steve Valenti as furious with city official as he’s been with the current administration.
- Tom Rich and wife of Paul Rich & Sons, the furniture anchor, rallied to Carr’s support out of their own frustration as much as anything else.
- Droves are religiously avoiding downtown North Street, handing it over to the gangs, drug trade, bums, riff-raff, and other denizens of the deep.

Ruffer doesn’t respond to press inquiries, so we got it from another source in her department (to no surprise, name withheld at source’s request): “Community development? More like community destruction.” Our source says the atmosphere is toxic, rife with bullying, intimidation, and vindictiveness. “It’s Deanna’s way or you’re out of a job. [The] Rules don’t apply to her.”
Ruffer has given the city motto, Benigno Numine, a new translation. The old Latin motto reads something like, “Up Yours, and Forever!”

You can be sure of two things when it comes to Deanna Ruffer:
(1) If a project benefits ordinary citizens or honest businesses, she’ll crush it.
(2) If a proposal rewards the special Special Interests, she’ll back it. Case in point the monstrous bike pump track that’s going to destroy several acres of Springside Park.
Another case in point would be her recent gift of $100,000 to developer David Carver to build four market-rate apartments on the dregs of Tyler Street. Carver wants to rehabilitate the former fire station. While THE PLANET is glad to see that old building get new life, gosh, we thought a capitalist system required the private developer put up his own money, assume the risks, and reap the rewards. THE PLANET can’t blame David Carver, though. What smart businessperson turns down $100,000 in free cash?
In Ruffer’s Pittsfield, however, the dreaded public-private partnership means the public fronts the dough and bears the risk while the private reaps whatever rewards. If the project loses money, guess who gets stuck with the bill?

To help you get a perspective on the whole rotten mess, let’s use an SAT analogy: Ruffer is to Pittsfield what Angelo Stracuzzi is to Biddeford, Maine.

I will write it again. Deanna Ruffer’s so-called economic development projects did NOT work in Pittsfield since 2004 with multiyear breaks through the Summer of 2021. She came on during the latter part of the first year of the 8 year long Jimmy Ruberto administration in 2004. She left Pittsfield for around 7 to 8 years, and she came back sometime during the third year of the Lovely Linda Tyer administration in 2018 – or for the past 3 years. She has been in Pittsfield City Hall for around 9 of the past 17 years. Perhaps she will qualify for a city pension and perks after she leaves Pittsfield in the future, but I don’t know for sure.
Linda Tyer and her millionaire Accountant husband live in a gated community close to the Pittsfield/Hancock border. I believe that her millionaires-only neighborhood sends a clear message to the people and taxpayers of Pittsfield. That message is that she is above and removed from her constituents. Mayor Linda Tyer makes around $100,000 per year plus her perks. I read that many local people and taxpayers write that she is inaccessible and out-of-touch. Godfather Jimmy Ruberto runs Pittsfield politics – including being Mayor Linda Tyer’s political boss – from Naples, Florida (and his part time Summer residence in upscale Lenox). If find it WEIRD that the ruling elites in Pittsfield are very disconnected from Pittsfield!
My view of Pittsfield politics since GE left town over 3 decades ago, but made Pittsfield into their dump, is that the ruling elites use Perverse Economic Incentives to make everything and everybody into sources of local revenue. The bigger the underclass in Pittsfield equals the more social services agencies, not-for-profit organizations, Level 5 (or failing) public schools, and the like. Pittsfield’s huge underclass is a multimillion dollar per year revenue source(s) for City Hall (for Matt Kerwood to build upon his multimillion dollar slush funds). In addition, the higher the municipal taxes, fees, and public debts/liabilities in Pittsfield equals more sources of revenue for City Hall. To be clear, Pittsfield politics has become an efficient shakedown operation that makes GREEDY Lobbyist and shakedown artist Dan Bosley look like he isn’t all that GREEDY after all.
The problem with it all is that business and government are supposed to be investing in the people they serves so that the people are able to invest some of their money back into the government and business. It is supposed to be a 2-way street, NOT a shakedown operation that only benefits the corporate and ruling elites. We the People are supposed to be building a strong middle class instead of Matt Kerwood’s proverbial slush funds. The elites are NOT supposed to be screwing over the proverbial Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski family all of the time. The elites have turned basic economics into CLASS WARFARE in our country to benefit only themselves. The only two things that grow in our economy anymore are the elites’ wealth and power, and our country’s huge underclass. It is: “Heads the Haves always win and the Have-Nots are able to tread water if they are fortunate enough, Tails the Haves always win (with government bailouts) and the Have-Nots fall further behind and into the underclass”. We no longer live in the risk/reward capitalist economic system that built the middle class after World War 2. We now live a rigged economy that no longer invests in the working class and provides social mobility to the masses. Again, our country’s economic system is really CLASS WARFARE!!!!
Lastly, economic growth only happens in a very small percentage of our country. Most of our country, such as the rust belt of the midwestern swing states, experiences economic loss year after year and decade after decade. Pittsfield, Massachusetts is part of the huge swath of our country that experiences economic loss, while Wall Street and the ruling elites have been on the winning side of our current K-shaped economic recovery/recession.
And after all that, the bottom line JM, you still vote DemocRAT. You really shouldn’t complain. You get what you voted for. But hey, I know, Trump’s mean tweets offended you.

Just returned from an exciting venture to Carr Hardware on Vibrant & Dynamic North Street. As I was walking from Carr Hardware’s side parking lot to the front door, almost got run over by a bicyclist riding on the sidewalk. Did not see one bike rider utilizing the bike lane. But the best part of my venture was seeing the 50 new white toilet plungers that are now decorating North Street. Wonder how much they cost the taxpayers? If a vehicles has to move over for an emergency vehicle and one of these toilet plungers scratches their car is the City is liable? Although, I did find it quite significant that the City of Shitsfield is now decorated with toilet plungers because the City is definitely going down the toilet fast. Thanks Mayor Linda and Mayor Deanna. What a Innovative, Vibrant & Dynamic Duo you two are. Evidently these two bruisers must threaten and throw their weight around at all the City Councilors because there is no comments or feedback from these elected officials and hasn’t been for the past two years. Very strange that all Shitsfield elected officials have gone completely mute.

I am annoyed that U.S. President Joe Biden joined the chorus of Democrats calling on New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign, while his (Joe Biden’s) son Hunter Biden is an alleged money launderer of hundreds of millions of Chinese dollars, along with Hunter’s business dealings in Russia and Ukraine. Andrew Cuomo is not a crack cocaine addict and alcoholic like Hunter Biden, who unlike Andrew Cuomo, Hunter Biden paid sex workers for sex and impregnated a young woman stripper and then tried to deny to a Judge that he (Hunter Biden) was the father of the stripper’s baby. After a court ordered paternity test, Hunter Biden was proven to be the stripper’s baby’s father. Hunter Biden has at least 5 children by at least 3 women, which means that Joe Biden has a lot of grandchildren out there that he is neglecting while he is busy tanking our country’s inequitable economy in the Oval Office. Compared to Hunter Biden, Andrew Cuomo doesn’t look all that bad for his alleged sexual harassment and sexual misconduct of women – which is wrong – in his role as Governor of New York. However, we all have to answer to the law, and if Andrew Cuomo is proven to have violated the law, he has to pay for his illegal actions like everyone else out there.
I believe our country has gone too far with political correctness and sexual harassment and sexual misconduct – which is wrong – allegations, but it makes for sensational tabloid news. In Marketing 101, the first thing one learns is that SEX SELLS! We are all cavemen and cavewomen, and nothing gets our attention like the marketing of SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX, SEX…. We all have done things in our lives that are sexually inappropriate, whether they were only thoughts, or possibly actions. Local town is looking to fire/not renew the contract for their treasurer. She’s abrasive, unwelcome, and just doesn’t fit in the town.
Reports are she’s created a very hostile work environment and no one can deal with her.
An auditing firms management was altered by a treasurer/collector and submitted to the Selectmen in a small Berkshire community. It was that letter and the complaint by a tax payer for being marked at the registry that unraveled financial malfeasance at the town. A number of people resigned and the Berkshire County DA is mounting a criminal investigation.
But today we led with a story written by the Boston Globe about a couple who’s only tie to the Berkshire’s dates back 30 plus years.
