TRILLION $$ COIN: FOOLISH GIMMICRY or UTTER MADNESS? PLANET DOESN’T SEE A THIRD POSSIBILITY

BY DAN VALENTI

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY OCT. 13, 2021) — Democrats looking to weasel around the national debt ceiling are trying to drum up support for the minting of platinum coins “worth” $1 trillion.

You read that right. This isn’t a joke. THE PLANET wishes it was.

The minting of such a coin would exploit a technicality in Treasury’s power to produce coinage “in any denomination.” Those are the words, including “any.”

This looks like an easy (though not elegant) solution, except for one thing: What tangible resources would back up the coin, that collateral thing that has gone the way of Jon Gruden in global economies that run on debt? Where would America get $1 trillion worth of goods or material, of anything for that matter.

The coin would be made of a couple ounces of platinum worth about $2,500 on today’s market. For the math-challenged, that’s slightly less than the trillion dollars the coin would claim on its face. If Treasure mints such a coin, THE PLANET proposes that E Pluribus Unum (“Our of Many, One”) be replaced with  De Unitate, Divisio et Discordias (“Out of Unity, Division and Strife”).

With the prospect of a $1T coin new to most of us and in the spirit of education, let’s examine the pros and cons, forgetting that the “pros” ARE cons (as in con game).

———- ooo ———-

Perspectives: Gimmicry or Madness?

Supporters Say:

— The coins could help end dangerous debt ceiling fights for good

“The debt ceiling was never designed to be a weapon of destruction. Legislators should not have the power to threaten global financial calamity in pursuit of increasingly petty partisan aims. With a platinum coin or two on account at the Fed, the debt ceiling could be rendered meaningless indefinitely, eliminating a wholly artificial and unnecessary source of crisis. Silly problems demand silly solutions” — Zachary D. Carter, Washington Post.

— None of the drawbacks of the coins would be worse than default

“If the choice is the Republicans’ sticking to their guns and watching Biden preside over the first default on debt in American history or feeling silly about minting a coin? Just go ahead and mint the thing” — Hayes Brown, MSNBC

— The coins would draw attention to the absurdity of the debt ceiling itself

“It is a work-around. It sort of makes it obvious that the debt limit itself is a pretty stupid idea” — L. Randall Wray, economist, to AFP

— The fate of the U.S. economy is more important than arcane debates about the president’s Constitutional authority

“If the choice is between default and a presidential power grab, a power grab is the only defensible course of action. A responsible leader does not plunge his people into a wholly preventable financial crisis. If backed against a wall, Biden mustn’t flinch. He must kill the debt ceiling once and for all” — Dylan Matthews, Vox

Skeptics of the $1T Coin Say:

— It’s risky to set the precedent that trillion-dollar coins can solve all of America’s problems

“Would relaxing the Treasury’s ‘self imposed’ rule against minting trillion-dollar coins leave us as safe, or safer, from abuse of the money power than we are now? To answer that question, one has to consider possible future consequences of the change. That means asking what might happen if the Treasury could mint not just one or two trillion-dollar coins, but as many such coins as it liked” — George Selgin, Cato Institute

— Minting the coins would be unconstitutional

“Article I gives Congress the purse strings, and the credit card. Were the president to take these powers, he would make himself a king” — Christopher M. Russo, Barrons

This would be a political disaster for Democrats

“I think minting the $1 Trillion coin would actually be unpopular because it’s literally just printing money and people get what that is” — Slate political writer Jordan Weissmann

— The coins could spark their own financial meltdown

“Global investors will know that this isn’t a sustainable way to pay the government’s bills, and given the constitutional crisis it would ignite, it will increase the odds they won’t get paid in a timely way at some point in the future. The trillion dollar coin will not forestall a financial crisis and economic crisis downturn.” — Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, to CNN

— A likely legal challenge would sow economic uncertainty

“If Biden were to take any of these actions, it is all but certain that Republicans would at least try to engineer a legal challenge. And so long as there is any uncertainty surrounding the legality of America’s debt payments, some of the negative impacts of breaching the debt ceiling might still be felt. Investors would likely want some premium for accepting the risk that conservative judges would upend America’s finances at any moment” — Eric Levitz, New York

— The coins would do permanent damage to the the value of U.S. currency in the world

“At the end of the day, a fiat currency’s stability doesn’t rest on anything other than people’s belief that money is worth what they’ve believed it to be worth. Doing something like the trillion-dollar coin is a great way to get people to think that [the] dollar is not such a great currency” — Philip Wallach, American Enterprise Institute senior fellow, to CNN

———- ooo ———-

THE PLANET sides with the skeptics. Such a coin would be fiscal play-acting and would have the detrimental effect of imperiling investments in Treasury notes, current considered the safest investment in the world.

So what say, ye scholars? Good idea or no?

Was it Constitutional when the Swamp bailed out Wall Street banks as well as foreign banks with trillions of U.S. dollars during the 2008 financial crisis?
Was it Constitutional when the Bush 2 administration invaded Iraq in 2003 for its second largest oil reserves in the World next to Saudi Arabia?
Is it Constitutional that the Military Industrial Complex spies on American Citizens when the Constitution forbids it?
Was it Constitutional for the Military Industrial Complex to torture foreign enemies by having them waterboarded or having trained dogs bite at their genitals?
Is is Constitutional for the Military Industrial Complex to have killed millions upon millions of foreign Peoples since the end of World War 2 through 2021?
Is it Constitutional for the President to declare de facto wars ever since World War 2 ended?
Is it Constitutional for the U.S. Supreme Court to made laws out of case laws?
Was it Constitutional when the U.S. Government and the state governments practiced racist immigration laws that targeted Jews and Italians from entering the U.S.A., the South’s racist Jim Crow laws, and the state governments’ racist eugenics laws that inspired Hitler in the 1920s?
The Constitution is just a piece of paper that the American Government uses to do whatever the hell it wants!
The allegory of the Grasshopper and the Ant illustrates how power works. During the Spring, Summer and Fall, the Grasshopper always played while the Ant always worked hard and prepared by storing food for the cold Winter months. The Ant would tell the Grasshopper to work and store food like he did for the cold Winter months. The Grasshopper would tell the Ant that he wanted to enjoy the nice weather and play. When winter came around, the Ant told the hungry Grasshopper that he should have worked and prepared for the cold weather like the he did. The hungry Grasshopper looked at the well nourished Ant and then ate the Ant.
It doesn’t make sense to the working class and underclass of America that they are the proverbial Ant, while the ruling and other rich and powerful elites are the proverbial Grasshopper. When Wall Street needs money, the ruling elites bail them out with our hard earned tax dollars. Iraq is rich in oil, so the Swamp took over their oil reserves. It is all a shell game, and I wish everyone would understand that we are really being manipulated. Lastly, I love my Country, but I fear my Government, despite the Constitution.

Hello Patrick Fennell,

I honor and thank you and all of my fellow Veterans for the Honorable service in the United States Armed Forces and related federal agencies who sacrificed their time and/or lives in defense of our country and the Constitution.

My point is that the Constitution is used similar to The Bible in that the Government uses it to justify its actions that have led to many nightmares such as the millions upon millions of foreign Peoples who have been killed by the Military Industrial Complex since the end of World War 2. How in Hell did the Founding Fathers’ documents justify Wall Street and foreign banks receiving trillions of dollars in bailouts in 2008, the Military Industrial Complex of endless wars and arms sales being the number one non-farm export to the world?

Religious texts, such as The Bible, and Government texts, such as the Constitution, are the most cited documents by politicians, but they are also the least understood texts. Try reading The Bible and the Constitution. It is not easy reading, even for the most educated scholars.

My friend is very intelligence about Financial Issues, and I asked him if the U.S. Government will ever pay for the $30 trillion and counting higher U.S. National Debt. My financially astute friend told me two things: (a) the U.S. National Debt will never be paid off, and (b) the Swamp can only run up huge federal budget deficits for so long until it won’t work anymore for the economy. My financially educated friend told me that when the government gives people “free” money, that it will all eventually trickle down back to the people who will have to pay for it in the future.

I told my financially astute friend that while he is right about it all, I believe that the people, including myself as well as him and his family, should take everything the government gives us all because someone else will take it instead of us. I also told my brother that it was unfair when the Swamp bailed out foreign banks in 2008 with hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars, while he and his family are struggling to stay financially afloat while paying local, state and federal taxes. God forbid that the people receive government benefits, while Wall Street and the ruling elites are all worth 7-figures or more with the financial system rigged in their favor only.

In closing, I wish the Constitution was more than a piece of paper, but I also wish that other Fairy Tales were real.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Melle

Mayor (is that what she is?) Tyer found herself a 40 million dollar coin. But senior citizens on fixed incomes will still be back funding lost revenue from her tax cuts to millionaire friends business ventures. Her philosophy is to take from those with the least and give it to those with the most. How pathetic is that?

These clowns that think any crime is ok should ask the people who are losing employment and ask those whose needs are not being met with store closings that are no longer able to provide for them.

Ask Wrong Way and she’ll tell you shoplifting is a victimless crime. Well, she won’t tell you that. She’ll parrot whatever Road Rage Rollins says about issues.

Does Wrong Way have a thought for herself? Or does she just search “progressive headlines,” and jump on the bandwagon?

As I stated in a post weeks ago, these “progressive” fools are only hurting the people they claim to advocate for. You know, people of color. The retailer will not only pass the cost on to the consumer, but much like in CA retail stores, they’ll quit stocking high theft items.

Helen, if you’re reading this, it’s not YT people looting the stores either, despite your constant “victimization” by YT people.

Seems the solution is much easier than the medicine the government is trying to force down our throats. Just stop spending and pay down the debt. Stop adding unfounded programs and live within the means. Not that difficult just have to elect adults instead of power hungry straw people.

If Pelosi and the Gang want money just open up the economy. Tell people we are at herd immunity and go out and live your life. Be aware that individuals are responsible for their health so take care of yourself. It has been proven by science if you eat healthy, exercise and take your vitamins you will survive this Fauci/Wuhan Flu. Once the economy gets going the taxes will roll into the government coffers. BTW gotta love the increase in gas prices…thank you Pelosi, The gang and illegitimate.

I’m sure another “pandemic” is brewing. Xiden is only a babbling shell of himself. Barry has realized Harris is a disaster; otherwise, she’s be out front and center by now. Barry and the democRATS plan failed with her and now they realize they are in serious trouble.

TSC, as been asked of you by me and others, without mentioning Trump, what has Biden done to help unify this country, as his ads claimed he would?

Pat

It has to be obvious by now that everything that is happening in this country is intentional. The Biden administration is doing a take-down of this country on so many levels. The Trillion dollar coin would be a disaster, but not just for the Democrats, but for the country. They want to destroy the dollar to prepare the way for a global currency. The Democrats hope they will ride out the destruction especially if they mess with the voting system.

We have ships in California loaded with supplies that are stretching out some 25 miles with goods rotting. The Biden administration supposedly doesn’t have a clue of how to fix the problem. I’ve heard so many saying to bring in the military to help unload these ships and feed the country, but that would be too obvious of a solution and Biden, Pelosi, and Chuck want the chaos of Americans fighting for fewer and fewer supplies in the stores. It feeds their agenda of bringing our country to rock bottom so they can say they have to build us up from scratch with their globalist Marxist system.

Pelosi was also berating the media yesterday for not selling her trillion dollar bills to the American public. She barked out that they should do their job because why should she have to tell the American people what’s in the bill. She barks out one thing that’s in it, childcare of course, and then says “lots of other things” and leaves it at that. She is such a phony and proves with her words how she knows the media is working for her and the far left.

Dan,you do know the approval of a debt ceiling is to simply balance the books and pay the Trump budget of last year. The real story of the debt ceiling is to default on paying people like General Dynamics,Lockheed Martin Raytheon.Trumps Republicans are gambling with our way of life.Trumper fascist want to destroy the democratic Presidency of Joe Biden early as possible because the American people will love this 250 billion dollar infastructure bill…Our economy will fly if it passes.Trumpers have orders to destroy it now.Google the yearly process of voting on our national debt. Its a tool republicans use to destroy democratic programs the middle class will love…..Trumpers had the ability to think before they listened to Rush Limbaugh….He almost had me too but somehow when I stopped listening to his negative view of America life changed to a more optimistic view of America….Now Trumpers are owned by the billionaire Trump…..The wealthy powerful people know what their doing. They make people think you and them have much in common like saving America from the people.

If I were forced to choose who I trusted more, Handgun Helen or Wrong Way? I would have to choose Wrong Way, 8 days of the week.

Wrong Way believes she is the white version of Road Rage Rollins. as scary as that might sound. Handgun Helen posted on social media about being forced out of a car at gunpoint, by (of course) white, Boston Policemen, for simply being Asian in the vehicle.

In Helen’s unexplained hatred towards the police and being about as smart as a tennis ball, she failed to realize that when the police arrest a person, a report number or incident number is generated. These just don’t “disappear.” Even if you’re found not guilty at trial, the arrest is still there. It would show a “not guilty,” as the disposition for the case though.

When people began replying to her and asking her for the case number, Handgun took down the post. To me, a liar, is a liar, is a liar. I trust Helen, a proven liar, about as much as I’d trust an addict leaving one of Wrong Way’s dope shooting galleries, to return my lost wallet with all money and credit cards still there.

Harrington is going to run become she doesn’t want to give up making the money that she won’t command else where. Helen is never going to come clean on her supposed episode with law enforcement. Maybe Harrington has some information on that episode and use it to shut her up.

Is it the same myth that: because one feels their employer owes them more money, they decide to take matters into their own hands (no pun) and steal from them to make up the difference?

Kinda like that myth, Bleak? Both involve theft.

No. Anyone who thinks widespread voter fraud is an actual thing is a moron. Period.

You’re just like the other guy who thinks I’m Matt McDonough,

Your posts are laughable and completely inaccurate.

How about the Mexican election of 1988? Should the grad student who studied the ballots post-hoc be banned, too?

No. Biden beat Trump. Trump’s Presidency was an abject disaster.

As for this McDonough nonsense, why do you care about some lawyer who stole and threw his life away? It’s pathetic.

I voted in all the New England states. All the ones within easy driving distance. Some states I voted twice by wearing a mask and speaking with an accent to throw them off. I also voted by mail in Florida and Utah and Utah does not even allow it. I also figured out how to change votes within a machine by staring at it and imagining my candidate winning. And it is not fraudulent if you mean well and have good intentions.

UH, uh no. It wasn’t me. It was someone dressed like me. I am not even old enough to vote and besides I had to do my hair that day. Please don’t show that to Tucker Carlsap or he will want me on his show and my suit is at the cleaners.

I have never asked you for anything before Shirely so please don’t let this leak out OK? Thanks ahead of time. I owe ya one.

Notice the term used on voter fraud? “Widespread.” Any fraud in any local, state or federal election isn’t a good thing. Some of these elections are decided by a few votes, so any fraud will play a part in the outcome.

This coin silliness arises whenever there’s this phony drama over the debt ceiling. Both parties play games with it. The deficit went up $7.8 trillion under Trump and McConnell voted to raise the debt ceiling three times during Trump’s presidency.

To claim that the Democrats are trying to “weasel around” the debt ceiling is belied by the fact that no serious people take this coin proposal seriously.

It is a joke. That’s why it never happens.

The coin silliness, rightly called by you, – it is more sick than silly – is caused by evidence that there is no current plan to fund the 4 trillion dollar bill. That means, there is no future generation of wealth to expected in borrowing the cash.

The IRS is being given the power to scrounge every cash deposit ($600) to squeeze the funds to cover this bill. Such wringing is not the promised shakedown of multi-billionaires nor even petty millionaires such as Sen. Warren and the rest of the Congress Critters combined. The recipients of this unique treatment shall be the health care provider – last year’s hero! – accepting cash for private work (they too are trying to stay afloat), handymen, mechanics, bartenders, and more. These are the people attempting to find solid ground – what we used to call the middle class. In fact, everybody is targeted except the well to do $100,000+ year professional living solvent on paychecks alone.

This new power of the IRS will be the strongest evidence that there is no future promised by the 3-4 trillion request.

“My rejoinder is this: your post is inaccurate….That happens when…from Alex Jones….[URL]….people are done with…who…from Infowars…The Daily Wire, Zerohedge, The Gateway Pundit…friends on Facebook.”

I agree – I also don’t read content from info sites that have those sorts of names; they turn me off. But, I am probably over-responsive to the current marketing trends. There are likely good reasons people publish there.

Liz Warren putting down the trips into space by Jeff Bezos as a bunch of billionaires with too much money. She doesn’t put down Nance Pelosi clocking in at nearly half a billion dollars in assets as someone who is ever wasting money. Liz is very particular about the wealthy people she needs to demonize as examples of waste.

Most Americans saw William Shatner’s trip into space as awesome and some great relief from the depressing antics of the Biden administration, but Debbie Downer Liz Warren couldn’t even let us enjoy that. She had to keep up the far left agenda of all wealthy people are bad except for herself and her far left comrades.

That whole news clip was fake to promote Bezos space travel business. William Shatner is in a nursing home in Montana hooked up to about seven IVs. But it was well done and pretty funny. yah, sure a ninety year old geriatric patient going into space. I don’t think so.

Shatner should get an award for the biggest belly at ninety, and alive. And for krist sakes it isn’t like he hadn’t been in space before? And it’s Mr. Spock, not Dr. Spock.

William Shatner walked up 5 steep flights of stairs to get to the spaceship. Everyone was amazed at his stamina for such an old person. He rides horses everyday and a bicycle. He is definitely not in a nursing home that’s for sure. His comments after the trip were so profound. Comparing the blue of the earth to life and the blackness of space to death and how the blue was such a thin line or so it seemed to him.

It was so amazing. Shatner is in great shape and walked up 5 very steep flights of stairs. Show me a 90 year old that can do that without having serious issues. Yes, he really did go into space, not deep space, but space.

Meanwhile in the Land of Lawless…
There are racial injustices in the justice system in Massachusetts but DA Harrington can’t or won’t provide any evidence of said claim in Berkshire County. Turns out this would require real analysis and she didn’t know she needed that. Harrington can’t answer the question, “Who is committing more crimes” nor does she want to because the rates are strictly proporational to socio econonimc status and she didn’t know that.
Harrington has no comment on former employees Kempthorne’s claims of attempting to withold public records and no comment on Kempthorn and Moon’s claims of engaging in politicking. Nada.
Should we take silence as agreement?
And regarding her claims of assistants being mistreated by a judge…Now for some unknown reasons, Harrington is the one that was wronged. It’s funny how, like most psychos, Harrington seems to be the only one who thinks this.
Overall, it’s pretty pathetic the DA feels the need to use the local media to explain all of what has gone wrong during her almost 3 years in office. Unfortunately, WAMC couldn’t afford to give her 3 or 4 hours.

Great points. I’m wondering when the Berkshire County police chiefs, Sheriff Bowler, and MSP, will step in and say something about this. “Racial injustice,” in policing in Berkshire County. Wrong Way stated this and it’s time call her out on her BS.

The majority of people committing the dangerous felony crimes in Pittsfield are “people of color.” Wrong Way can try and spin it any way she wants, but show me the stats Nips.

Hey Chiefs, she’s calling your departments racist and dishonest. How about you grow a backbone and support the men/women who work under you.

Chief Wynn, I’m talking to you. Time for leadership.

I’m willing to bet my life savings, if I looked through your posts prior to you becoming “woke,” you never said $hit, nor cared about the confederate flag. And no, I don’t care for it, ever owned one, or frankly, think about one. So, save the “racist” or whatever “ist” you plan on calling me.
