(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY NOV. 16, 2021) — Recently, while back in the Berkshires, business took THE PLANET to Tyler Street. We hazarded the journey only after having filed for combat pay and venturing in with a full pack.
Our words shall be brief, choosing to let the pictures tell their own story. As you will see, the visuals unfold in a tale of dereliction, strangely compelling in their own way, perhaps in the manner of all ruins. With enough perspective — and trust us, THE PLANET has more than enough, from our recollections of Tyler “back in the day” — we can view the shambles not just as a sign of failure (which they are) but also a symbol of the entropy that envelopes all things in this veil of tears.
The ruins are the fault of any one person or any one decision. Instead, they testify to decades of accumulated cuts that were left untreated and have become infected. It also goes without saying, which is why we say it, that the millions thrown at Tyler Street have been a waste. We would have been better off taking all the money on ones and starting a fire. At least there would be warm hands for a few minutes.

My son goes to Richmond consolidated school. He has endured relentless bullying in 6th grade from a seventh grader. He’s been pushed to the ground and kicked, he’s had his projects and art damaged. He’s been called horrible names and was threatened to be killed a number of times.
He was told by one seventh grade student, the same student that has been bullying and assaulting others, that if the bully caught him in the bathroom, he’d my my son suck his dick after he fucked him in the ass. What 7th grader knows even to say that nevermind threaten that. This student sent out pornographic images of a young girl who was supposedly his girlfriend. He sent it out to dozens of students in Snapchat.
We’ve reported incidents to Dan Weston, Peter Dillon, their teacher, and Doug Wentworth who is the student adjustment councilor. Nothing has been done! Richmond used to be an excellent school but they’ve gone through three principals in a year and Peter Dillon doesn’t think he’s paid enough to care. When we spoke to Dan Weston he said he’s new and doesn’t know what to do. That’s not an excuse!!!
Some of the teachers are excellent but the administration and the support staff just don’t care. My son went to the office and the nurse because this student hit him in the head with a closed fist. When I asked to see the incident report they said there wasn’t one because my son said he fell. I asked him he told everyone he was hit, a para and a teacher saw it happen and sent him to the nurse.
The school is incompetent and they are covering something up. A number of parents have retained lawyers.

I would hope Pittsfield parents would do the same. Pittsfield leaders would like to think we are about to forget about their own malfeasance and it needs to be a constant topic until it gets better.
There are appointments today with the school and an attorney representing the parents to make formal complaints against this out of control child. I feel bad for this kid because his home life must be horrible, but he is creating fear for many many others in the school and it seems if not taken seriously could escalate into more physical or sexual abuse towards others. The school system should and could be held liable for tolerating this for a year and a half now of verbally documented actions by this boy.

The current selectmen are up to their ass in alligators from all sorts of lawsuits related to their malfeasance. I have heard that Pilson is the root cause of a lot of this but Richmond School has a history of slyly pushing things under the carpet. Just look at the Good Schools reviews.
The ELA middle school teacher is an asset to the school. I don’t have recent experience with the school but have heard she is great. It is very sad.

Richmond was a hidden gem for years. I worked my tail off to get my two kids in there. I paid for 2 years of pre-school to insure our spot. I was a champion for RCS. I worked as a sub/ para/ lunchlady while my kids were young. Just to be close to them. The school was AMAZING. Then they lost Monica, now they are on their 4th principal in 3 years. The place is a shitshow. The wonderful teachers are still doing good work in the midst of chaos. Rather than focus on the issue, the Super is circling the wagons and worried about PR.

It sounds real. Maybe the main difference is that in Richmond someone might actually still listen to the parents.
Richmond and Lenox are just ok school districts, good in comparison to the Pitts but not great. Maybe the district/school is about equal to something in a decent capital district suburb – ie maybe as good as a guilderland but prob not. And Richmond is a lot, lot smaller with a big budget per kid, and school choice control over 30% of its demographic so when you look at it that way they can’t really claim great outcomes.
No it’s not there’s hundreds of emails and dozens of posts about it in Facebook forms for parents. There’s posts in a teachers private chat room about it. The staff is too afraid to stand up to administrators. We have friends still going through this a year and a half later! Pittsfield might be better at handling bad kids because they have more of them. This kid is a product of Pittsfield and shitty parents but Pittsfield got rid of him so they are smarter.
I worked in Richmond and I don’t anymore. The administration purposely hid reports from students to hide the sexual assaults and bullying problem.
It got so bad that I’d go home in tears knowing what was going on. I consulted a lawyer and was told I could be held criminally and civilly responsible if I participated. It was not hard to leave except I think I’ve failed my students.
The administration didn’t care they called students liars and said they were ganging up on a child. They concealed videos of students being assaulted to cover up their incompetence.
I still don’t know why they did this, what is so special about one child?

Reading about Richmond (as well as the Dorchester incident) it seems like this endemic of bullying, violence, mistreatment of teachers, etc. is more a general characteristic of the time we live in versus a Pittsfield problem.
The world changed in March 2020. We allowed the cure for the virus to be worse than the ailment and now we are paying the price.
You have an entire generation of children who were basically left alone to run amok for a year. The joke of remote learning, home alone on social media and YouTube for hours on end, getting crammed every which way with messages of the ultimate danger they faced in the real world if they stepped outside. No friends, no schoolmates, no family, no other adult authorities except parents losing their own minds trying to “survive” the pandemic.
And they may be in school now, but it’s still a doomsday situation. They eat alone at desks at lunch, forbidden to talk to one another, only allowed to scroll their phones and communicate electronically.
Their faces, and expressions and verbalization are muffled by face masks. We have created a generation of monsters. Until we give them back their childhood and normalcy, they will continue to develop into desensitized, violent, disrespectful little monsters.
