- Speaking This and That, the wildly popular game show we debuted this week, a scoring change for those playing at home. Initially, THE PLANET had councilors Ken Warren and Karen Kalinowski among the listings. Our official scorer has informed us that both have been elevated to the judge’s platform to join Charles Kronick and Tony Maffuccio. Warren and Kal won the promotion for their morally and economically sound votes to nix the mayor’s porcine $200 million budget.
- At Tuesday’s council meeting, Sir Charles once again distinguished himself with his presentational innovations, stepping down from the dais to deliver a stemwinder to his largely boneless colleagues. It was worth the price of omission, the omission and absence of a similarly fresh and ideational approach to local government by such El Boringos as Sherman, Conant, Kavey, Lampiosi, White, Persip, and Marchetti. Shecokalam Whipermar, Space Monster. Get it?
- Lame, local media — we mean you, WAMC‘s Joshing Landline — presented an inept, ball-sucking account of the budget meeting on that typewriter of media known as “radio.” Stringing at WAMC at $0.29 a story has got to be a killer and a chiller, not a thriller or a maxmillar. Landline is to journalism what John Gotti was to Communion Breakfasts.
- One mediating factor THE PLANET owes Joshing to consider, though, is that he has to send all his pay to that washed-up prune, Alan Charbroiled. Watching Herr Doktor swilling the ’82 Dom while Josh sucks on the warm Kool-Aid has our hearts reaching out to the kid.
- Digital Warrior recently asked THE PLANET: “Please find out if the sheriff candidates are partnering with: https://protectamerica.vote/ We must have Constitutional Sheriffs.” As promised, we contacted both camps — those of challenger Alf Barbalunga and incumbent sheriff Tom Bowler.
- BOWLER: “No, I am not involved nor do I plan to be involved in this organization. Elections in Massachusetts do not fall under the purview of the Sheriff. That is a function of the Secretary of State’s office. In addition, I have complete faith in our Boards of Election throughout the county to do their usual excellent work running our elections.”

- Yes. Alf said nothing, despite two requests. When a camp previously has been responsive in every way and then suddenly refuses comment, something’s usually up. Can we assume from the silence of Alf and his manager Michael Mauer that they ARE partnering with the protectamerica group? If so, why are they trying to hide it. Remember, Alf made a huge point of transparency in his kick-off. Apparently, he won’t let voters see into this one.
- Score this round the Bowler, who delivered his answer crisply and promptly. With the election a little more than two months away, all victories are important victories.
- Seems that Ricky’s Rumpass has embarrassed city hall with the botched Tyler Street rotary. The needless roundabout, so word on the street has it, does not meet the approved specs. We don’t know what technical problems lurk in the design, but we know that just going from the point of view of typical motorists, the rotary look like a design from Crank Loud Wrong, the world’s worst public-works engineer. Jutting roundouts, confusing traffic flow, narrow lanes, and a gigantic dead-space in the two center (non-traffic) circles make the debacle look like it’s come straight from Bizarro World.
- Switching to federal news, Syracuse Joe’s 9% inflation amounts to a $6,000 a yer pay cut for the median U.S. household. Boiling it down, this economic meltdown, which economists have been warning about for decades, has occurred because for four decades now, America has been living on debt. Spending money it doesn’t have has led to a national deficit of … $inconceivable. If I put a simple period mark (.) to represent $1 billion — for example, $10 billion would look like [……….] (10 dots), I’d need to type 28,429 dots. Let that sink in while eating your Wheatabix. That amount doesn’t count $100 trillion in benefits to future retirees. This is money Uncle Sam doesn’t have, but let’s send another $40 billion to Ukraine. For that, I wold need to type another 87,671 periods. That’s a total of 87,671 periods, each representing $1 billion. Pretty soon, we’ll be talking real money.
- And while you’re at the pump paying $5 a gallon, think about how radical Democrats on the Loon Left such as AOC and the Squat convinced Ol’ Joe to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline on the first day of his presidency. Keystone was online to bring 900,000 barrels of crude into America refineries. It’s not for nothing that JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned investors to grab hold. A fast-moving economic “hurricane” is heading our way.
- Don’t ya just just love how mayor Flat Tyer gave away another $3 million of ARPA money away on trivialities, irrelevancies, and non-profits. Yeah, the Not For Profit Prime Time Players, who get a freebie when it comes to Pittsfield’s punishing and soul-destroying tax rates, got almost all of the chunk. Not a crumb for the Kapaskis. Ah, but as Captain Smith said when the titanic was about to go down, “That’s the way of it.”

Sheriff Bowler is Correct on this one. There is nothing harder than getting people motivated that don’t care. They had a primary election in New York last Tuesday where only 15% of the eligible voters voted. The September primary in the Berkshires will probably mirror those numbers. Low turnout means honest elections. A mark of rigged elections is 100% turnout. 40-60% is a mark that only the committed/angry are voting, and the rest are not pressed to show up.
Come 100% voting you will have guys looking for hand stamps and certificates verifying that you did your civic duty and voted for the winner who will get 99.9% vote. 0.9% for the loser proves the election was democratic.

FOX mentioned our own Pittsfield on their show a few days ago showing an aerial view of the city and mentioning that we are the largest city in Berkshire County and have a 5.8 unemployment rate and that’s with nobody wanting to work and supposedly lots of jobs available.
There is not much living wage jobs at all. Most poor are better off in free section 8 housing, with an EBT, Obama phone, and free medical.
All jobs are living wage now. They removed min wage years ago. Everyone now makes $16. Retail clerk, bank tellers, office workers. Why work in a boring office when you can duck gunfire at Cumby’s for same wage?

You would think the top item would be the drugs and violence that have overtaken our county or perhaps the loss of another murder trial by “Team BDAO.” Instead, we see the DA pandering for votes by a county that is, what 95% pro-choice? by pledging to defy pro-life laws – as if deciding how abortions are prosecuted has anything to do with Berkshire County. “Any effort to enforce abortion bans in Berkshire County courts will stop at my door.” It’s almost as if there is anything for DA Harrington to actually do to make good on this promise. There is NOTHING for DA Harrington to do other than the job she was elected to do.
Speaking of work…Next we have Harrington’s claims about reducing the Covid-19 backlog. Since we have no idea how many cases the DA has simply dismissed without the transparency she promised voters during the last campaign, we have no way to accurately gauge whether this is as misleading as it appears. “The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office congratulates every member of the team” certainly makes me feel better, though.
Next up is “Accountability ” featuring, as evidence, the guilty convictions of the person who shot Nicholas Carnevale. We know DA Harrington believes voters are not smart enough to understand that this was a joint venture case in which most of the defendants were acquitted of most of the charges. One need only look so far as the campaign contributions to Atty Shugrue’s campaign to see that the entire Carnevale family gave a vote of no confidence in the DA with their contributions to her opponent in the upcoming election.
Next up we have the DA’s warning about fentanyl in the drug supply. The rise in fentanyl is the direct result of the DA’s failure to prosecute drug related crimes since her tenure began. Warning the public about fentanyl now and believing this somehow serves the public against a deadly situation the DA helped create is the laziest type of propaganda. We have a DA who refuses to prosecute drug crimes and then behaves as if she is doing something by doing NOTHING. At least there is consistency.
Last, we have a sidebar on Juneteenth educating the reader on what it’s all about. What does this have to do with the job of the DA? NOTHING. But it’s a nice distraction from the loss of yet another murder case by Minister of Justice Andrea Harrington.
The district attorney has a legal and ethical duty to promote truth and to refrain from conduct that impedes truth. Even a small child knows the truth isn’t about cherry picking or ignoring evidence we dislike. The DA’s self-interested misleading rhetoric in this newsletter is just another example of why she is a politician, not a prosecutor, and why she can’t be trusted.

Friday’s news article in the Eagle is titled, “What’s at core of absence crisis?” This had to do with public school problems related to children attending, or not attending, school because of the pandemic. We have a sickness here, a pandemic, so the experts say. That’s why we have an attendance problem. The story did say that in certain areas of the city non-attendance is more prevalent than in other areas. Of course, this means in low-income areas youngsters are the group not attending classes. Nothing new here. The experts said the same thing when I attended Briggs and Pomeroy in the 1940’s. Here’s the difference. In the middle of the last century if you disturbed classmates from learning you were sent to the principal’s office. Often you were expelled from school because as the trouble maker you were not allowed to prevent classmates from learning their lessons. If you were 16 years of age or older you were kicked out of school and told to go to work. Hard to imagine that kind of discipline today. What would happen today is the trouble maker and their parents would do their best to fire the teacher and/or the principal. Unfortunately, they would find support from other professional administrators in school and city government.

If you are low income, underprivileged, broken home and have an attitude, it is someone else’s fault that you are disrupting education for everyone else. The wolk school folk sympathize with you and besides their hands are tied as to being able to discipline you.
On the other hand, if you are one of the kids whose parents pay outrageous property taxes to support this school system, you hope your kid learns a little something and is not unduly influenced by the gang culture. Some are just happy their kid comes home in one piece at the end of the day.
Level five schools with a poor learning environment are the reason hundreds of parents choice their kids out of the Pittsfield school system. Literally thousands of others have just moved away. Sadly, many of the empty seats created by those who left have been back-filled with even more “students” who have moved into the area and education is not really their top priority.
On the plus side, it is likely that the 25% that do not show up every day probably would be adding to the chaos in the classroom anyway, so seriously, let’s hope they stay away forever. Maybe the school committee could approve of a stipend to pay unenthusiastic students to stay as far away from the schools as possible. (even the drug dealers who are only their to ply their trade)

The boring broadsheet ran a story posted first here about the roundabout being too small. In his “round about” way Ricky Rumpas admits the thing is too small, but that was on purpose. The road is 16 feet at its narrowest, a regular round about its 22 feet at its narrowest.
They designed this to be “pedestrian safe” while forgetting to make it car and truck safe.
There’s a lot of truth to what was posted here, probably more than the Eagle’s fluff piece even printed. The project was funded, in part, by MaDOT so they did do inspections and told him this design was too small for the type of traffic and the 4 inch “mountable” curb was the wrong choice for the size of circle.
Is it just me but a isn’t it bad for a DPW that hates roads and cars to have a job like this? He’s killing business and making traffic worse (and pollution) with his millions in experiments in making roads “safe” for pedestrians and bikes.

Sounded like grenades going off in my neighborhood. This sounded much louder than fireworks. I had a window open and the noise was deafening. I quickly closed it. Too bad since it’s a nice cool night and it would be nice to have a window open. People like to be on top of their fireworks apparently or whatever noise makers they are using. Nobody ever taught them that fireworks should be viewed from a distance. Watching them over water is the best and most beautiful especially when professionals are setting them off since they know what they are doing.
