ADD 2 SEPT. 13, 2023 — THE PLANET shares this information from the Pittsfield Police Department on last night’s stabbing, which proved fatal:
On Tuesday September 12th 2023 at approximately 10:45pm officers with the Pittsfield Police Department (PPD) responded to the area of Melville Street near the intersection of First Street for a reported stabbing.
Upon their arrival, officers located a 42 year old Pittsfield resident who appeared to have been stabbed. PPD Officers, Pittsfield Fire Department Personnel and Action Ambulance Personnel provided the victim with emergency medical care and he was transported to Berkshire Medical Center where he later died.
The investigation is being handled by the Pittsfield Police Department with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office. This was not believed to have been a random act, and as such there is no immediate threat to the public.

KRONICK ENDORSES BLUMIN
ADD 1 SEPT. 11, 2023 — Charles Kronick, Ward 2 city councilor, has endorsed candidate Alex Blumin to succeed him. Kronick is not up for reelection. Here is the full text of his endorsement:
I am excited to endorse Mr. Alex Blumin for Ward 2 City Council. When we elect Mr. Blumin, we continue Ward 2’s tradition of self-governance. We consistently choose the independent voice to represent our interests. We have a tradition of preserving a philosophy of reasonable inquiry of elected officials, and we demand responsible financial governance.
Ward 2 awaits the City’s fulfillment of its promises to complete roadwork and fix abandoned homes. Mr. Blumin will push the City to achieve these promises. The Mayor aggressively hiked water and sewer rates twice in the last two years, and she promised more increases. Ward 2 residents worry about the ever-expanding City budget they are forced to fund. Alex Blumin shares your worries and will fight for responsible budgets. Mr. Blumin will continue to promote reducing your taxes and reducing water rates by using your tax dollars locked in Free Cash and the cannabis reserves.
City Hall spending lacks transparency. The next councilor will see the $41 million in ARPA funds spent down. The news shall be that THE PLANET will “sit this one out,” not returning to this site until two weeks from today, Wednesday, Sept. 20. Yes, your earthy time coordinates place the date as The Morning After the Night Before the Vote. Then we shall see the winnowing process begin. such as it will be with a turnout of 26%.
We continue this hiatus for a number of reasons, only two of which we care to bring up at this point. First, we are rather enjoying our time and distance away. Second, we don’t want to hear the inevitable claims that we somehow, some way, used our influence to alter the poll results. Number one, as Joe Biden would say, THE PLANET has no more influence on voter (and nonvoter) preferences than Judge Crater has over the outcome of Thursday Night Football’s opener tomorrow. For those keeping score at home, The Detroit Lions will be fed to the KC Chiefs. Number two, we have little interest.

The Lions will have a better chance of an upset than Karen Kalinowsky does of surviving Sept. 19. That’s just the way it will be, and nothing less than an act of Frank Sinatra will change it. Come the 20th, the legend on the mayoral marquee will read: “Peter Marchetti v. John Krol.”
The series of “debates” (or were they “debasements?”) last night at the Berkshire Athenaeum provided a brief interlude of entertainment, shades of vaudeville badly done. This wasn’t the fault so much of the candidates but the lifeless format. With “sugar plum fairy” questions from an intrepid panel of media interlopers, artificial time limits, and moderation emphasizing the vanilla end of “moderate,” potential voters learned … nothing.
Candidates easily (or not) skated, danced, shuffled, “um”d and “er”d through the truncated response times.
If anything, the exercise, lacking format expertise that comes as second nature to THE PLANET and his manner of candidate interrogation, will if anything likely suppress turnout on the 19th.
Another opportunity lost.
Ah well, whereas losing gold was once the inspiration of poetic greatness — check your memory banks for “Milton, John … Lost, Paradise” — today it spurs only rhymes.

In Pittsfield politics, every citywide election is always decided by the (mostly middle-class) voters of Ward 4 with a marginal impact from the voters of Ward 3, going back decades in time. The rest of the city’s wards do not matter in terms of deciding who the next Mayor, 4 at large City Councilors, and 6 “Level 5” School Committee members will be, as well as the Pittsfield’s State Representative to Boston’s corrupt and secretive Statehouse, who resides in Ward 4, of course.
Peter Marchetti ran for Mayor of Pittsfield politics in 2011, but he lost to Dan Bianchi back then. Peter Marchetti would collect a 6-figure city public pension plus perks if he wins the mayoral election in 2023 and serves one or two 4-year terms in the corner office. John Krol would make his comeback in Pittsfield politics if he wins. Karen Kalinowsky would double dip by collecting her existing city public pension plus perks on top of the mayoral salary of $115,725 per fiscal year 2024, and after she retires all over again, she would double her city public pension.

It seems to me this is nothing more than an attempt by Kamar Talifarro to see which candidate will play the “racial grift” game and handout more taxpayer money to black people, simply for being black.
Case in point, a non-existent company who draws sparse to no young POC turnout at their events, the Berkshire Black Economic Council (BBEC).
I look at photos from their events and see small POC children and the usual guilty, older, white attendees-think “White Wine Party,” with DA Wrong Way Harrington and her Lenox group of elites. I don’t see young, professionally dressed, business minded, black men or women, at these events. Why not? Wasn’t that the purpose of the $750,000 ARPA g(r)ift?
And we certainly can’t forget about the Cultural Competency Coach and her taxpayer funded trip to Africa for family and friends. Shirl got $500,000 for her ROPES course, that she’s now starting in North Carolina.

I think Karen DOES have a chance if all the people who would like to see her elected get out to the polls. They should not be discourage by suggestions that she does not have a chance because that is not at all accurate. Both Krol and Marchetti are praying that Kalinosky supporters get discouraged and stay home.
Much strangers things have happened when people are sick and tired of being shat upon by embedded special interest puppets who have no intention of doing right by them and in this case we have records to reflect back on. Neither Krol nor Marchetti are, “coming into their own” now or ever. They are what they are.
There are upset elections happening across the country all the time and I am going to do my share to be part of one in Pittsfield, Ma. I hope everyone who really wants change in Pittsfield will not fall for the line that she has no chance, or any other last minute hit job you may read about in the “news”. And they will be coming.
She has a very real chance and if it happens you will be proud to have been a part of it. And you and all your Pittsfield family, friends and relatives will be much better off for it.

My take on the Debate. Kalinowski did ok and showed that she is the change candidate. Krol talked about both his 12 years in politics and being a change candidate. I’m not sure this works. Marchetti was by far the most qualified. His financial background is a plus! Pittsfield should be thankful to have these options.

Saving the taxpayers money happens by reducing the real estate tax. You cannot reduce the tax levy and raise the budget at the same time without borrowing. Using Free Cash is minimal support and done because, as FH says, it is the taxpayer’s money gained by overtaxation and pocketing unspent grant funds. Contrary to the opponents’ opinion, the small amount helps. Those who need it, need every dollar.
Therefore, I was left wanting my fellow councilors support when I made recommendations to cut bonuses and health insurance matching. Marchetti has two months to repair his record, and I wish him well.

Taxpayers could give a crap, they are more in tune to electing a mayor that will listen to them, lessen their taxes and water bills, and do their best to build a better and SAFER Pittsfield. For the past 8 years Peter has not even attempted to rectify any of those issues and has gaveled slapped anyone who has tried. He stated last night that he feels Pittsfield is safe. He has to stop playing around with pronouns and open his eyes and ears, Pittsfield neighborhoods are not safe, and taxpayers know and experience it. What few shopping areas we have left are nerve wracking to visit especially in the early evening, you are dodging panhandlers left and right, some of them become quite arrogant when you say NO to them. Mayor abro of cava was a good friend of ours. He and I became good friends. I introduced him to mayor Charles Smith of pittsfield and the three of us set up the sister city program between the two cities.
Krofta engineering USA was folded into several European countries with corporate world headquarters in Austria. Krofta unfortunately died just a little too soon to see him be dubed the father of flotation technology

Wish that the City Administration would put in the same amount of manpower to repair the thousands of remaining potholes as they are putting into the pickle ball courts on Benedict Road. I am not against the pickle ball courts, but I am angry that the Pittsfield streets are STILL suffering from huge potholes. Driving through the City there are very few streets that are not completely torn up and still waiting to be finished. I have said this year after year, does Morales ever finish any job his department starts? What is the reason these potholes are not being filled? Where is the excise tax and pot monies going? Currently 6000 (thousand) FAMILIES in shelters needing food, housing and medical care and that is just in Mass. In N.Y. they have 20,000 new non English speaking children enrolled in their school system. How in the world do you run an effective education system with so many who do not even know what the teacher is saying?? And how much less teacher time does the kid whose parents pays taxes for the schools get??

According to the Metro arrest report, Johnson issued 209 fraudulent refunds back to a single Chase debit card, with the money going into a checking account. Johnson is alleged to have started out slowly, processing two fraudulent refunds in July 2022 and gradually ramping up that total this year to 23 in March and 37 in July.
Metro investigators looked into Johnson’s bank accounts. Police allege he was moving money back and forth between several different Chase accounts.
“It is common for criminals to move money between accounts to make the fraudulent funds harder to track and also make the stolen money appear legitimate,” a police investigator wrote in Johnson’s arrest report.
The overview of investigators was that this should have been picked up on much earlier, that there was insufficient oversight built in.
