The data assembled more preachments to the choir than reliable numbers. The survey predicted that Alex Ocasio-Cortez would be the Democrat presidential candidate in 2028.
Republicans can only hope.
In the words of one writer, AOC stands “as the poster child for economic illiteracy of Gen Z and millennial socialists.” Well said of this lightweight who called her live-in boyfriend of 10 years her “spouse.” The lad came to his senses, though. The blissful young couple broke up earlier this month.
You know what they say. “All is fair in … ”
AOC pulls down $173K in Congress, yet she’s been a deadbeat on her student loans. If you recall, she’s the one who nagged and shrilled a clueless Joe Biden to wave his autopen and grant an instant $50,000 in loan relief to a gaggle of young moochers, the ones who love to borrow money but do not think about paying it back. Socialists never do. They called it loan “forgiveness.”
You know what THE PLANET knows but what these Peter Pans don’t: Loans are never “forgiven.” Debt gets transferred to those who actually believe in pay-back responsibility. Their names? Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski.
AOC wants Medicaid for everyone. Apparently, it doesn’t bother her that almost 2/3 of those able-bodied souls on such take do not work. Of course, as we saw in or previous column, “work” is something that so many of AOC’s ilk have come to detest. They avoid it like the Bubonic Plague.

The first is the population of the United States on Aug. 27, 2026. The second is the size of the U.S. debt. Do the math, and it turns out that each man, woman, and child in America “owes” $117,000. THE PLANET paid our share last night.
Both numbers are alarming, but we’ll offer a few comments on the debt.
Debt means borrowing assets you don’t have with the promise of future payback. For the right to use the money now, your future payback will be with interest to the lender. Fine as it goes, but when the country owes such an incomprehensible amount, it creates enormous problems.
For ordinary people, it drives up the costs of borrowing by putting pressure on available capital. For the government, this size debt makes it more difficult to operate, since so much money goes to debt service.
In our view, the most dangerous aspect of the debt can be found in the nation’s (i.e., the politicians’) attitude. It used to be that the U.S. borrowed to finance war and/or to deal with emergencies. No so now. Today, America sees debt as “structural,” that is, built into the country’s economic assumptions.
That’s the reason it doesn’t matter which party is in control.
Democrat or Republican, debt wise we are fried.

The best way to deal with debt is to NOT have debt in the first place. If one has debt, then pay it off as soon as possible.
Debt is a product like everything else that a consumer pays for. When one has debt, then one has negative income. Cash flow and negative income are polar opposites.
Money impacts people’s moods. It is stressful to have little to no money. It is comforting to have money. But at the end, nobody can take it with them.
Over $40 trillion in the national debt are a lot of photons on a computer screen, but it is no match for Earl, the 2-Pete’s, and Kufflink’s cooked books.

Dan, I have to admit, there is something spectacular about opening a column by calling someone “economically illiterate” and then spending the rest of it wrestling with numbers like they owe you money.
You tell readers that “almost 2/3” of able-bodied Medicaid recipients don’t work.
Small problem.
The actual statistic is almost the exact opposite: roughly two-thirds of adult Medicaid recipients WORK.
That’s not rounding, Dan. That’s turning the fraction upside down and hoping Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski don’t notice.
Then we arrive at the national debt.
You give us:
$40,000,000,000,000 ÷ 349,403,222 = $117,000.
Except it doesn’t.
Using your own numbers, it comes out to about $114,480 per person.
Now, I completely agree that $40 trillion in national debt is obscene. Democrats have spent. Republicans have spent. Everybody in Washington apparently discovered the national credit card and decided the minimum payment was somebody else’s problem.
In fact, Dan eventually admits exactly that:
“Democrat or Republican, debt wise we are fried.”
Well, THERE IT IS.
We finally agree!
So why did we need the opening sermon about AOC, her boyfriend, her salary, millennials, Gen Z, socialists, Medicaid recipients, student borrowers, Peter Pan and the Bubonic Plague to get there?
The national debt didn’t reach $40 trillion because Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had student loans.
And while we’re discussing fiscal responsibility, perhaps we could demand it from ALL of Washington instead of pretending the Treasury only starts printing money when Democrats enter the room.
Republicans love spending too.
They just prefer different shopping aisles.
There is a legitimate conversation to be had about $40 trillion in debt, interest payments, entitlement sustainability, taxation and a federal government that has normalized spending money it doesn’t have.
That’s an important conversation.
But if we’re going to lecture an entire generation about “economic illiteracy,” perhaps we should first master the advanced financial concept known as…

Funny you should pick on a distinction with no difference as the column’s major faux pas. The flaw in your comment is in linking the first part (AOC) with the second (the debt). I meant no such linkage, which means I could have better transitioned from 1 to 2, i.e., “Moving on to another issue …” We are in synch about the major point: Dems and GOP … equally spendthrift. What AOC is NOT doing is stealing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars right in front of their eyes. The trump family is making AL Capone and his cronies look like choir boys. I reside in Amherst, New Hampshire since early-Spring 2004 through present day late-August 2026; over 22 years now.
I am honored that you or others think of me to serve in elected office in Pittsfield. I love my native hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, too.
But I respectfully decline to run for Mayor of Pittsfield. Peter Marchetti (Mayor Beer Belly/Lumpy) is my relative as we share the same great-grandparents who emigrated from Italy to the U.S.A. well over one century ago (the early-1900’s).
I honor Peter Marchetti as a member of my family on my maternal side of my family. As for Peter Marchetti the politician, I strongly dislike his politics in Pittsfield.
He seems to favor Money and Power instead of serving the people who live and pay taxes in Pittsfield. His settlement with millionaire LUCIFORO upset me on many levels. The Pittsfield bank’s settlement with Victoria May was upsetting to me as well.
I root for Pittsfield, but I think the city government is highly questionable due to the political insiders who disregard the financial and quality of life realities of the people and taxpayers.
The Boston-based state government is wrong to under-fund state aid funding to local government. Massachusetts ranks 39th out of the 50 states for local aid funding.
People should be able to have and keep a roof over their heads. The state and local government’s career politicians should NOT tax people out of their biggest investment: their HOMES.
I know a lot about the people and government in Pittsfield. I know some of them are NO GOOD, especially my Enemy #1 whose derogatory name is similar to Lucifer.

88 Corporations, $105 Billion in Profits, Zero Federal Income TaxAt least 88 of the largest corporations in America paid no federal corporate income taxes in their most recent fiscal year despite enjoying substantial pretax profits in the U.S. While the biggest U.S. corporations have avoided taxes in this way for decades, it appears that corporate tax avoidance has increased in the most recent year. This is at least in part due to two separate packages of corporate tax cuts pushed through by the Trump administration: last year’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” and the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).
These tax-avoiding corporations represent a variety of industries and together enjoyed more than $105 billion in U.S. pretax income in 2025. The statutory federal income tax rate for corporate profits is 21 percent, which means these 88 corporations would have paid a collective total of $22.1 billion for the year had they paid that rate on their 2025 income. Instead, they received $4.7 billion in tax rebates. This means the total federal corporate income tax breaks enjoyed by these companies comes to $26.7 billion when measured against the 21 percent statutory rate. Measured against the 35 percent corporate income tax rate that was in effect before the two corporate tax cuts pushed through by Republicans and President Trump since 2017, these companies collectively cut their income taxes by $41 billion in 2025 alone.
These findings are based on ITEP’s analysis of the annual financial reports filed by the nation’s largest publicly traded U.S.-based corporations in their most recent fiscal year. All data presented here come directly from the income tax notes of these reports.
This is far from a comprehensive list of the new tax law’s large corporate beneficiaries: many companies with fiscal years that don’t align with the calendar year have not yet filed such reports for 2025, making it impossible to know the extent of their tax breaks. Some companies with substantial tax savings are excluded from this list because they are not part of the S&P 500 or Fortune 500. Large privately-held corporations are not required to disclose income tax expense and are excluded as well. This report also excludes some corporations that reported zero federal income tax on large profits in 2025 because they relied overwhelmingly on net operating losses from prior years to zero out their 2025 income tax.

Just now heard police call from Bradford st. some mom wanted assistance from police getting her child ready for school. Not making this up. If the police are actually having to respond to calls like that I can see why the dept is having trouble getting and keeping their people.

Heard the same call, Unbelievable. A few years ago I had a Pittsfield Police Officer tell me he was called to a home. A mother and daughter arguing about who should dry the dishes. Officer gave them each a towel and stood while they dried the dishes. He since has retired, and I don’t blame him.
I have written about this before, here is another occurance in the parking lot of the Boy’s Club on Melville Street. Going to exercise at the Y, parked my car, person passed out in the bushes, beer cans and needles around him and feces on the side walk. Walking down Melville there was a woman passed out in the doorway of the vacant trophy shop. This is 8:30a.m..There was a couple of police officers at the Y serving a warrant. They told me the department does early morning wakeups of folks sleeping in doorways, these folks must have been missed. Do the merchants of North Street deserve this? This same day there was a travelling hockey team going to the Boy’s Club. Is this how the Mayor and City Council want to welcome out of town folks? This parking lot is CITY PROPERTY, CLEAN IT UP.
Also, on North Street there is a very handicapped woman in wheel chair basically living in front of St. Joe’s rectory. She hangs her laundry in the tree, changes her clothes while cars are waiting for the light. There is garbage thrown all over the sidewalk. Where are Pittsfield Social Service agencies? This is not a life for a handicapped person or any person. We certainly have enough taxpayer funded agencies in Pittsfield and on North Street. Do something!

Would love to hear how the Democrats would plan to cut the deficit while giving away a bunch of freebies to the people who can but don’t work? Have they noticed all their policies have increased the cost to all us workers? The list goes on of all the freebies the Democrats have put in place that have raised the cost to us workers like section 8 vouchers, WIC, SNAP, EBT, Free phones, Free bus rides, free housing, free food, free childcare, and the list goes on. How will they get rid of the debt? Especially when to get elected they will have to pass out more freebies. Please can some one tell me who actually took Economics and Accounting? Isn’t there a saying “There is no such thing as a free lunch”? Everything has a cost it seems Democrats just can’t see it
