(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, TUESDAY, AUG. 11, 2015) — THE PLANET has more information on the two most recent acts of mayhem in a city now awash with gang violence, drugs, and deadbeats.
In the case of the father-daughter deaths, which the D.A. called murder-suicide, sources close to the situation tell THE PLANET the 11-year-old girl “may have been dead for at least 11 days” prior to the father’s death. They say the father, a drug addict, was complaining to friends about an odor in the house days before his death.
Law enforcement officials, requesting anonymously because they were not authorized to speak to the press, say 11-year-old Hannah was not in Pittsfield to visit her father but to live with him allegedly because of the mother’s drug problem. Issues with substance abuse were said to be at the root of the father’s problems, and he checked himself into Jones II. Sources say “he was soon discharged.”
Not long after, a source said, “questions surfaced about the whereabouts of his 11-year-old daughter. [Police] visited the residence and found [the father] dead of a drug overdose. A search for Hannah led to a large object under a bed wrapped in a rug. It was Hannah, who may have been dead 10 to 14 days. Cause of death unknown.”
If the information is accurate, it raises a million questions, including:
* How could the father not notice the girl missing for all that time?
* How come no one else — family, friends, officials, anyone with regular contact with the family — suspected something was wrong?
* Who was questioning the whereabouts of the girl?
* Was the girl enrolled in any of the Pittsfield School Department’s summer programs? She was well-known to staff at Conte and Morningside schools. You will recall that Pittsfield school superintendent Jake “JIV” McCandless ordered grief counselors for children at both schools. They are there until tomorrow. JIV also seemed to be familiar with dad and daughter. He vouched for the the man. He was also quick on the trigger volunteering that there was no sign of trouble in the household. How would he know that?
* Was JIV’s statement a pre-emptive attempt intending to deflect any questioning of his department?
* Did members of his department miss signs of trouble?
* Is the current investigation looking into the possibility of a fatal error by the school department?
With the start of school looming, these are relevant questions. Without answers, parents have reason to be leery.
Tyler Murder Update
The second incident is the murder and shooting on Tyler Street, not far from the First Street intersection.
Shortly after the July 31 murder and the wounding of a second teen-ager, the family of the 18-year-old shot dead said the shooting was not gang related but the aftermath of a previous fight involving a girl. Another member of the family, however, told THE PLANET the incident was gang related. The source said the family had warned the teen about hanging with the wrong crowd.
Earlier in month, police had accused the murdered teen of slashing the tires of a car and smashing the windshield. When the owner came out, he slipped. The kid, police charged, and a 17-year-old with him, each stabbed the man. Gang activity? We can’t say, but it sure isn’t altar boy practice.
The murdered teen lived on Bartlett Avenue, not a neighborhood one associates with gang activity. Nonetheless, on Friday, a state police SUV could be seen in the mid-afternoon cruising the area. The vehicle traveled on East Street near the skateboard park across from Pittsfield High School, took a left on Bartlett, went left on East Housatonic, and cruised that general area for a while.
This does little to calm the frazzled nerves of desperate, overtaxed, and ignored citizens, and parents who will soon be dropping off children to school.
Meanwhile, the mayor continues to yell, “Lockdown!”

An 11 year old girl taken from her drug addicted mother only to be given to her drug addicted father in Pittsfield found dead, wrapped in a carpet. Dead for 11 days. Who knows what unspeakable horror that child went through prior to her needless death from her psycho father?
The Bloods, The Crips running the streets; dealing drugs and making heroin addicts of Pittsfield youths. A large percentage of Pittsfield’s youths and older visit the methadone clinic every day to get their State approved dosage of opiates. Then walk around the city like the walking dead.
Teenage pregnancy off the charts. Those who choose not to have the baby subject the life of the unborn babies to dissection where the internal organs are sold.
PCB’s emanating out of the ground almost everywhere. Causing cancer and premature death to a large number of Pittsfield’s population. The corporation responsible gets off scott free. A mere pittence known as the consent decree.
Very high taxes and shameless wasting of taxpayer dollars. A totally corrupt city government that is rotten to its core.

I have read stories of parents or spouses dying and the remaining family member going on like nothing happened. this is usually a sign of mental illness. of course, why would a normal 11 year old die? did she commit suicide perhaps? going from one out of control situation to another must be hard on a child, and we seem to ask too many children in this world to take on the role of adult. People with chaotic family situations often don’t allow people into their homes, and often disappear for periods of time. That is part of the chaos. it’s less unusual than you think for a child to go missing for a week or two while they go visit family – usually to escape the situation with a bad parent.
there must be more to this story. it is sad on so many levels. a little girl with two parents incapable of caring for her, and no one really noticing when she is gone. Almost like she never existed.

Bianchi, Farley-Bouvier, and Mazzeo guided Senator Markey through the so-called economic development sites in the Berkshires yesterday. As you can imagine, it didn’t take long and what they consider to be economic development such as the Berkshire Innovation Center and educational opportunities are not economic development. Training low income people for jobs as Farley-Bouvier was gushing about doesn’t help low income people if there are no jobs in the area. These politicians have no clue about how to make the Berkshires a prosperous area. Farley-Bouvier was laughing and smiling over everything that Bianchi said and Mazzeo seemed to be keeping a low profile, perhaps she is worried about the $500.00 theater gala ticket she was not supposed to use, but then again this is Pittsfield so maybe she isn’t worried at all. Who knows?
All I know for sure is that as with the new Taconic High School project which voters were shut out of and which is being touted as an economic engine, nothing these local politicians do ever revitalizes the local economy. Adams looks like a dying city and the same could be said of North Adams after the hospital closing. Pittsfield is spending more money than it can afford for which it will eventually have a day of reckoning.

Agree also. Researched the many local economic development organizations and indeed many of the same , tired, individuals comprise them. I did notice the business manager of the local unions is usually a member. Are unions typically considered anti-business ? I simply don’t know.
The shooter, Newman, had quite a recent history of violence THAT WAS KNOWN TO PPD!!! He and his thugs put a friend of mine in the hospital with several broken bones just a few days before the murder on Tyler St. They jumped him—a guy in his mid-40’s, mind you, and gainfully employed—in a dark parking lot after as he was getting into his car after a date with a woman from out of town. My friend’s attack by Newman was wholly preventable.
Known to PPD, but they did nothing about it? If the police aren’t arresting and the courts just let them go, It’s no wonder we have so many crimes in the city.

None of the stories other than the Tyler St. murder made the papers. There is a PPD log that was printed in the BB, don’t know the exact date, but it was the end of July, that describes them answering a call at Linden and Onota. It was there that Newman, I am told, and his gang came out from a backyard party and held down both my friend AND his date and beat them.They then told the cops that the woman had used a racial slur. I was not witness to it, but I don’t buy it. I think the thugs took a profound national tragedy and used it to make excuses for their “bit of the old ultraviolence”, to quote Anthony Burgess.
The whole story regarding the Father and Daughter situation is terrible. With the amount of State Agencies, nonprofits etc. that we support and or subsidize this should have NEVER occurred. If a child happens to be in a situation with not one but two parents who are hooked on drugs I would expect some social service agency to be involved on a daily or routine basis. 11 days? Really? The case worker if there was one and there should have been since the child was moved or removed from the “mothers” care and placed in the fathers needs to be help in part responsible, 11 days no contact? Was this done through the courts? If so did the courts also appoint a custodian or case worker for this poor little girl? If not why not?
Because this poor little girl died alone and most likely traumatized by what life in the City of Pittsfield is or was to her is more reason to demand accountability on her and all children’s behalf. How many times have we heard “it’s for the Children” well now this one really is. Rest in peace our child, rest in peace.

I really don’t understand everyone’s paranoia over whom everyone is “BEHOLDEN TOO” OR “IN THE POCKET OF SPECIAL INTERESTS”. These are Pittsfield City Councilors not Congress.
Plus you really think the Mayor or City Councilors have the power to stop this crime and bring jobs to the city. They have very little power of any of that.
They can not bring Companies to invest into this area because we simply don’t have the Qualified People to fill those positions in this area. Many of our own companies here have set up offices in other areas in order to fill positions. No professional company as any incentive to locate in this area.
The generation of “21-40” college educated kids all leave here for opportunities elsewhere. Why, because there are few career opportunities and this place a drag to live in.
The only solutions I see on this blog are “CUT TAXES” CUT TAXES like that is going to have any real multiplier effect on our economy. Like $500 extra bucks in our pocket so we can spend it on Amazon is really going to boom Pittsfield back to 1975. Or “BOOTS on THE GROUND” will bring needed Law and Order.
Oh wait to pay for the extra boots on the ground and while we cut taxes we must slash our Pittsfield School budget so we can ensure now EVERY good teacher in Pittsfield leaves because they are paid far better in other towns. Some are left.
No one here on this blog or in the political spectrum of Pittsfield has a solution to any of this. No one!
I think you could start with cutting school administration costs. Why do we have so many more bean counters when the school population continues to decline? The fact is no one is going to touch this clique because most of them are connected to royalty.
Maybe the teachers left because they got sick of the type of students they taught. It only takes a few disrupters to make it impossible to teach the students who want to learn. And not to mention kids bringing guns to school these days. And its BS that there are not qualified people in the area. There are many ready now from area mills that were closed or sold recently.
As Far as cut taxes, keeping them same for a couple years would be nice and stop giving tax breaks to every new business related to the arts or going downtown and putting it on the tax payers back.
To lure new business here you have to upgrade the railroad and offer the ability for rail sidings to companies . Also instead of a $127mil new school (touted by TFB to keep kids coming back here after graduation) maybe the reps could have fought for the money for road work or bypass necessary to make it easier to get to the pike so if businesses did locate here, their trucks could get in and out easily. Then you might have a chance to lure some good jobs here and incentive for grads to live in Pittsfield..
Its not The Common Park or Theaters or New Schools that will bring businesses here. Its workforce, transportation and crime that are the factors and our elected officials are the ones who have to start the ball rolling up the hill.
There is not the qualified work force to fill the types of professional positions some of these companies are looking for.
I’m not pulling that fact out of my behind, that’s a well known fact and number one reason for existing companies looking to hire outside the area and for prospective companies not looking to invest.
Lets take Two well known examples in the area of large employers: General Dynamics. General Dynamics pulls in kids from outside this area to come in work for a few years until they have their masters degree paid for and they jet off to another city for another job. Even that incentive has left them with working hard to fill whats becoming temporary positions
Take Berkshire Life for instance, several offices outside of Berkshire County and the offer to allow employees to work from home has been presented to combat their inability to find qualfied workers for many of their positions.
To tell you the truth the “arts” is the only thing bringing people into this city to spend their money in Pittsfield. You could argue number two is illegal drug distribution. However, they are not going to Hotel North to eat.
I have to disagree with you about the work force. I know many examples of qualified college graduates with MBA’s, engineering degrees, math degrees,etc that come back and attempt to find work in the Berkshires but can not find anything. So they do the only other option, they move out. As you also stated and I have illustrated capable employees will move to where the jobs are. So the question really is what has the government of this area done to entice businesses to move here or to start up? In my long life here I can say I have absolutely no evidence nor memory of the government doing anything positive in this endeavor. They have been a complete failure and things need to change if and this is a big IF the population wants the business to come here or if they want to live in a decaying almost ghost town.

I just got my electric bill. I used 60% of what I used last August – and the bill was double (I looked it up). I now pay .159/kwh for the power part of my bill and a few of the other charges looked like they went up too,
More than taxes, which can in fact be negotiated as we all have seen – utility costs and labor costs are two costs which will chase business out of the Northeast. Utilities are around 1/2 of what we pay in the Southeast. So if you have a big building requiring climate control, or lots of machines – even after you use the most efficient technologies out there, you are stuck with a big utility bill. And didn’t we in Mass just pass a paid sick leave bill? don’t we mandate higher wages through a higher minimum wage, which in fact pushes up the wages for jobs above that?
didn’t the eco-terror groups force VT Yankee to close and at the same time three or four other power stations burning coal and oil are closing, and the same eco-terrorists are fighting the pipeline? those same folks fight large scale solar and wind turbines.
at some point, if the goal is to have good jobs – don’t we need to make sure we have policies in place which allow the prospective employers to make money?
we seem to aim the gun perfectly at our own foot or our own head – without regards to how these policies affect our ability to actually be competitive.
Pittsfield is caught in a predicament that is enhanced by our size. to large to be homogenous (like Stockbridge or Lenox which are pretty much all white and mostly affluent) and too small to attract businesses that overlook our cost disadvantages because of other assets like major research universities.
As our economy contracted – we still have all this housing, and the folks that own it want to rent it – so – they rent to whomever comes.
Jobs may never return, so we need to figure out how to manage the downsizing of our physical being,
if service jobs are our future, we need to embrace it wholeheartedly. AS factory today uses about 25-30% the staff as it did 30 years ago, so even if we get manufacturers to return, they will come and bring only a few of the jobs we need.
we would be better off if we encouraged property owners to tear down their slums if we taxed them on the value of their units as if they were pristine. after all, they disinvested on purpose – and still collect high section 8 rents – often higher than an unsubsidized unit would bring. if it’s all about money – then we should encourage them to either invest or tear down.
the units torn down would undoubtedly be the ones attracting the people who drive up the costs in demand for services, etc.

The fact is reducing the property tax puts some extra money in people’s pockets. You can change some local policies that have very minor effects on economic investment.
However, if we are looking the greatest multiplier effect specific to Pittsfield its new higher paying jobs and an increase in tourism. We have to give “the arts people” some credit they boost morale and have provided an incentive for people to come to Pittsfield and spend.
It’s not just simple as if you build it they will come because problem is no one is willing to build it because they don’t have confidence people will come. You can take that as jobs or tourism.

You make no sense. On the one hand you say we don’t have qualified people (which for some reason you capitalize) in the area which discourages companies from moving here, but on the other hand you say educated qualified people leave the area because it’s boring. By that formula even if we had good paying jobs, people would still be leaving because the area is boring. Very few school systems pay as well as Pittsfield schools. I disagree I think people would stay if there were good paying jobs here. There are solutions and they have been repeated many times on this site if you are a regular person to this site you would know this.

When your local Government is broken, you need brave fresh faces willing to stand up, and fight for the Citizens who pay the bills. Actually, I cannot see how anyone could not have understood what I have previously posted on this matter. It was clear and concise. My column on this was simply to raise questions concerning the ethics of accepting a product (or it the theater package a service) worth more than $50. It couldn’t be simpler than that.
Observations: Bill Sturgeon (BS) for mayor. He has analyzed the problems of the City and has presented a solution. At the last City Council meeting BS identified jay walkers as the reason why tourist and others do not come downtown. His solution is to increase the fines on jaywalkers and he even appealed to state rep TFB to move the new fines thru the legislature. Only in Pittsfield could this be true. Economic Development to follow, not lead.
Sturgeon is correct, Jaywalking as well as rude behavior on the roads, speeding, passing on double lines etc. Throwing cig butts out the window.
