PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITIDE, TUESDAY, SEPT. 15, 2015) — We saw him.

With our own eyes.

If you watched the mayoral debate last night, you did too. It’s been a long time, but “We saw him,” the man we loved for so many years.

Bianchi Came With His A-Game

THE PLANET ended our previous column wondering if we were going to see the Dan Bianchi we loved when he was the Ward 6 city councilor for 1o years.

We saw him.

Bianchi came in with his A-game and easily disposed of two non-entities and a formidable challenger. The non-entities were Donna Walto and Craig Gaetani. Walto’s only offering of the night was the two-headed serpent that she (a) graduated from Williams College and (b) she knew Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick, and Mary Flynn — all dead, as is her campaign. Walto graduated from Williams in the Pleistocene Era, long gone to The Conqueror Worm. As for Gaetani, we heard that he “saved” the city “$212 million” on the water plants. Funny how the number keeps growing. That, too, is in the long, dead past, a broken record that keeps skipping or, keeping within a more appropriate metaphor, a Chinese water torture that Pittsfield doesn’t need at this point in its fragile moment. And so it was that these two B-list characters played up to form as nothing more than footnotes to the real business at hand, which is Mayor Dan Bianchi versus City Clerk Linda Tyer.

From what THE PLANET saw last night, we give the triumph hands down to Mayor Bianchi. Let us count the ways.

First, THE PLANET takes up the opening statements. We can stop there.

Walto: A Late Show and, Figuratively, a No Show

When the debate began, Walto was nowhere to be seen. She came staggering in after the debate had begun, several minutes late. There is no excuse to traipse in late for an event of this importance. Walto not only humiliated herself, but she spat upon every member of the electorate. THE PLANET cannot say, and let’s be clear on that, but from what we thought we heard through her  slurring of words and the loud kind of voice you hear at your friendly neighborhood bar about 15 minutes before last call, we would guess that she showed up three sheets to the ambient breeze. Of course, we could be wrong. Perhaps she really is that out of touch. We understand. Life has been hard on her.

Yeah? Welcome to the club.

In her opening, Walto told us she was a graduate of Williams College, with access to “the world’s greatest alumni network.” Apparently, Walto never heard of Union College and Syracuse University, let alone Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Slippery Rock.

Then came Gaetani, another one who loves the Way Back Machine. He hammered on how much he “saved” taxpayers” with his involvement with the Pittsfield water plants. This time, it was “$212 million.” It started in the 100 millions and has been growing with each telling. Gaetani, who has the delusion that he can win then election by hosting a TV show on Time-Warner cable, spoke volumes by showing up in a … windbreaker. THE PLANET shall pass on the obvious comment here. Suffice it to say that Gaetani is a raw nerve exposed to a salt bath. Not exactly what one would call mayoral timber.

We can say that the forum in K-111 at BCC did a public service by demonstrating from the first question why Walto and Gaetani do not deserve to advance past Tuesday. Good Lord, if that’s what Pittsfield can offer by way of an alternative to the status quo, let us all take the pipe now and get it over with.

Bianchi: In a Word, ‘Mayoral’

So we come to the two First-Tier candidates. Everyone know going in that this election would be between Bianchi and Tyer. That was the Main Event. The other two were strictly the undercard. So what did we see last night? THE PLANET saw Bianchi finding his form and touching the right chords. He was, in a word, mayoral. Bianchi, rising to the occasion, began his opening statement with a lovely personal touch, a nod to his 35 years of marriage and being the father of three children, “the toughest job in the world.” He began on script, reading from notes and then broke off to free flight — obviously rehearsed from also from the heart.

He connected.

in contract, Tyer, in her opening remarks, came off as over-rehearsed. She read stiffly from her notes, body language betraying nervousness, the shoulders at her neck. She whiffed. When finally gaining a bit of composure, Tyer came off as a cheery, “let’s put on a show” light weight. You could see the mayor lapping it up like the last drop of Johnny Walker Blue.

A Format? No — More Like a Straightjacket

As for the format, THE PLANET can only say “dreadful.” THE PLANET loves Jonathan Levine for his involvement in the public forum going back to The Gazette‘s inception in 1991, but there comes a time when perhaps you need to think about “hanging them up.”

Moderator Bill Sturgeon went by an arbitrary  90-second limit for each candidate’s response. Fine, except that Sturgeon kept losing his place. He seemed ill-prepared and also asked the type of pre-scripted questions that candidates could easily anticipate. Thus, the only thing the electorate heard were the prefabricated answers. Sturgeon stumbled through the night, often overlooking a candidate who was supposed to speak. He also asked incredibly awkward questions. For example, he asked two versions of the same question — on economic development — in two parts. He then went through each of the four candidates, twice, on the same one issue, repeating the questions eight times! It was agonizing, the death by a thousand cuts for those viewing in the auditorium or by TV.

THE PLANET will do it differently. We went into last night’s forum determined not to host or moderate any of these “debates” or “forums.” We came out last night determined to host true “debates” with all of the contested races. This means we shall be inviting the candidates from Ward 1, 2, 5, 7, at large, and mayor to appear on our TV show for true person-to-person showdowns. We will throw out the clock. We will ban notes. We will let the candidates engage each other, face to face.

That will come after Tuesday, when Walto and Gaetani are mercifully assigned their right place in obscurity and Bianchi and Tyer go head-to-head for the ultimate prize.

Going into all that, THE PLANET tips our fedora to Dan Bianchi. He rose to the occasion. He was, in a word, mayoral. We didn’t expect it, but we shall be the first to admit we enjoyed it.

Gaetani wore a windbreaker to the debates, because he wore his Sunday best to Court the other day: wife-beater t-shirt, cut-off blue jean shorts (complete w/strings hanging to his knees), different sized black socks, and tennis shoes. You have to cut him a little slack.

Bianchi has had more than ample time to address Poverty, Blight, Crime, Jobs, DPW failure, Community Safety. He has proven these are Not his priority. He is a self-interest opportunist. We are not part of his agenda. He should not be re-elected. This guy is way to comfortable at thumbing his nose at the have nots. He enjoys it.

So are you saying that because Hizzoner Bianchi looked and sounded good on-camera compared to the others in this first debate of the election season, that this is sufficient reason to re-elect Bianchi, despite the man’s glaring incompetence in office?

Mr. Valenti, awkward or not, do you believe that Ms. Tyer, if elected Mayor, would be as disingenuous and lackluster in office as Mr. Bianchi has already proven himself to be?

By the way, Mr. Valenti, wasn’t it Mr. Bianchi’s seemingly polished presentation that got him elected Mayor in the first place?
And how has that turned out for the city?
Suggest voters do not judge any more books by paper-thin covers.

Bianchi is a B.S. artist. He, along with the Councilors who didn’t stand up for the Taxpayers, have Not earned re-election. Pittsfield needs sweeping change. I will give Tyer my vote, just to take it,away from Bianchi.

Have to disagree with you on this one DV. Bianchi did not look Mayoral, he looked like the same person who tricked the voters into getting elected to his first term only more polished because he has had the last four years to practice. Dan Bianchi is a person who will say or do anything to get elected, and now he has a coach/consultant to help him with his act. I saw a man who would sell his sole to the devil to get elected with the amount of lies he told last night. What I saw was a great actor and an imposture of what a Mayor and a normal person should be …… nothing more.

I agree. There is a lot of money at stake in this mayoral race for the winning candidate. It’s all about the nearly half a million dollars they will get after four years in office so winning and not about helping the people they will be elected to serve is the major motivation here. Tyer comes out as a big Progressive and aren’t they willing to give up a good deal of their income in order to live up to their political ideals? Or is this just what they want the average person to do and this doesn’t apply to themselves?

Heard the Mayor on the radio yesterday, thought he did a terrific job, money well spent on his consultant I guess. Today is Gaetani’s hour center stage till the curtain comes down with on radio WBEC with Tom Conklin, so it doesn’t matter what he wears.

If I recall, wasn’t it Sturgeon who said the Planet was his mentor? I disagree with heir Planet on this one?? Bianchi wasn’t the winner, there were no winners. Pittsfield was the loser. Anyone see Tyer’s lawn signs? I’m with Linda…Wonder who came up with that? I don’t know how to say this, but B C C and the Gazette should be embarrassed at that production last night.

I thought it was ridiculous from the get go to have Sturgeon as the moderator. I mean he does arts reviews for the city! He is way past retirement and admits on his radio show that he is exhausted and some days can’t keep up with his schedule. I believe it. How does this qualify him to ask hard hitting political questions? I can’t believe he was the best the city could come up with just as I can’t believe the four people on the stage last night were the best the city could come up with.

I think Bianchi was way too prepared. I think he had somebody coaching him as many people noticed he kept staring at his cell phone. In addition he has been in office long enough to be comfortable fooling the people. He just didn’t give his all to being a mayor and what he did give, I don’t want. I could not see voting for him again, smooth performance or not. I was also not impressed with Walto or Gaetani. As for Linda Tyer, some answers were okay. I liked her making fun of PEDA and the Berkshire Innovation Center as they have not done anything for the city. I am not happy with her heavy support for the schools which I see as being more money being put toward the annual budget increases, but Bianchi was just as guilty of doing that.

The questions in the debate, as I knew they would be, were just not hard hitting enough. The debate did little to bring out the serious issues facing the city. I like Dan V.’s idea of having the candidates on his show, but doubt Bianchi would show.

Dan you say Bianchi came across as mayoral? Unfortunately when it counted, the last four years on the actual job, he was considerably less than mayoral. Last night he talked about how he was going to bring in jobs, fix the roads and be prepared for winter. What he did not say was why he has done none of these things for the last four years when we really needed it. What was he waiting for? He was waiting because he was too pre occupied with personal goals, that’s why. Did he say anything about whether he would still be working two jobs and not be focused on the city and its residents full time?

He had two terms to prove his worth and failed miserably. Blowing more smoke up our asses during a debate does not make up for the damage he has done. This wolf in sheeps clothing can not be trust for four more years.

I am not a fan of Tyer/Ruberto and will not be voting for her. But if she gets in she can’t be as bad as Bianchi. Not even Doyle was as bad as Bianchi and he set the bar pretty high for incompetence.

I did a double-take to make sure I was still reading the Planet. Did the GOBs or the TPTB get to you? Dan, you have spent many posts and hours of research showing us poor Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski’s who the mayor aka TES aka mayor McCheese really is and his gross incompetence. Now you think he is being “mayoral” by smooth talking his way through a nearly satirical “debate.” No way. He’s gotta go. I’d vote for anyone else at this point.

Not sure he is the choice. Who’s paying for the “boots on the ground” he espouses? Who’s going to pay for the body cams he wants? He’s big on talking about the water treatment plant but didn’t really answer the question as to what sort of industry/business he’d try to attract to the city.

That said, I’ve also never trusted Bianchi and that didn’t change during this forum (didn’t really feel like a debate).

Bianchi said he hopes the weather will be better next year and the D P W guy from Newton will make a difference. So suffice it to say, he has no faith in Collingwood, yet gave him less duties and increased salary. Now that’s what I want in a Mayor. Forard thinking at it’s best.

One thing Gaetani is correct about is that Pittsfield is heading toward bankruptcy, ala Detroit. I don’t like Bianchi as he doesn’t have the personality to be mayor, especially for a 4 year term. I will be voting for Tyer in the final.

In a pure comparison of camera-readiness Mayor Bianchi performed well, and that’s certainly one component of political debate.
For voters of the type looking for substantive answers or some sense of honesty and accuracy, he ranked last in the former and poorly in the latter category. Even Walto and Gaetani presented more specific plans, even if one mostly involved using Williams Alumni for everything and taking Japanese businessmen up mountaintops, and the other mostly depended on firing everyone, saving us “a billion dollars” in the future with Dr. Wong, and increasing police patrols.
All Bianchi seemed to do was alter history to take credit for somehow bringing about projects anyone who with any memory clearly recalls were already in motion and that he had either little positive impact in (BIC), was previously against pursuing (Taconic), or no involvement in whatsoever (Treasurer Grossman’s small business banking deposit).
But then you would expect at least some basic competency in this regard from an official who for two terms has done little else *other than* make public appearances taking credit for positive things accomplished by other people.

and what the hell was that jibber jabber about “acting” positions being the same as regular positions? If they are the same why did he say in his first campaign that he was going to make them permanent then reversed his stance? It’s curious that Bianchi supporter Par Muraca (nuclea biotech) both have one thing in common, everyone else it seems doesn’t,they are for the PIPELINE….follow the money. At the other camp Tyer, you have Gerry Lee and Barry the boyfriend, with attaché of , Marchetti, Sherman, former Councilor Yon et al. So, pick your poison. Gaetani has Wong and Walto has a Mountain top Billionaire and Billionaire endowed Williams Alumni.
