PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEEKEND EDITION, JAN. 22-24, 2016) — Yesterday, we beat all local media in breaking the news of Mayor Linda Tyer‘s latest appointments — Matt Kerwood as finance director, Denis Guyer as buildings and maintenance main man, and Michael Taylor as personnel chief. Today, we present a column we couldn’t squeeze in at the time of its coming, but given its prophetic nature, THE PLANET will share it now. Never let a good forecast go to waste, especially when it borders on divination.

To get into the right spirit of our soothsaying, think back to all the wasted public money that went into enterprises that should have been private ventures, with private risk capital at stake — EV Worldwide, WorkshopLive!, Patriot ResortsBeacon Cinema, ad infinitum-ad nauseum. Do that and you will soooo get the following.

** NEWS ITEM FROM THE BORING BROADSHEET, EARLY DECEMBER 2015 **

PITTSFIELD Patrick J. Muraca, the founding CEO of Nuclea Biotechnologies Inc., has left the company to head another biotech firm that will soon be offered to Nuclea’s shareholders. Nuclea’s board of directors has appointed Muraca the president and CEO of NanoDX, a development stage company in Albany, N.Y.

The board has appointed biotechnology industry veteran Donald E. Pogorzelski to replace Muraca as Nuclea’s new president and CEO. Pogorzelski, a former president of Genzyme Diagnostics, and Muraca have already assumed their new roles.

A Pittsfield native, Muraca co-founded Nuclea in 2005. Although he no longer runs Nuclea, Muraca is still the company’s largest shareholder.

Muraca termed his move from Nuclea to NanoDX as a “mutual decision” between he and the board. A startup, NanoDX is a spinoff of Nuclea that is affiliated with the SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany.

THE PLANET took this lame article and rewrote a more accurate version.

** NEWS ITEM FROM AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE,

WHERE NOTHING IS TRUE, NOT EVEN THE LIES **

PITTSFIELD — The board of directors of Pukelea Bye-o Technologies Inc. has thrown its rotund CEO Tambourine P. Morocco out of, then under, the bus. The carpetbaggers sent him 36 miles west to head a crumb company backed by rags, bones, hanks, test tubes, and lots of taxpayers money. Fortunately for Pittsfield, the new company — NoNoNanette XX — is located in Albany, N.Y., a city noted for its stuffed mastodons and Sheldon Silver.

To replace the evidently replaceable Tambourine, the Pukelea board appointed Donjaun E. Pofzxskblswzxklzczski, a former president of Snakeoilzyme Diagnostics. Both Morrocco and Pofzxskblswzxklzczski have assumed their new positions, which essentially consists of wining, dining, and bribi — er, “inducing” —  area politicians and others who control public funds to provide taxpayer dollars for … well, as of press time, no one has been able to say what Pukelea has been doing for 10 years or what NoNo intends to do for the next 10.

Pukelea, for example, has offices in the city on Lakewood Avenue. The office has a lot of desks. Each desk has a chair and a computer. The only people ever seen in the office play video games. Odd, that, since Pukelea is not a video game manufacturer.

Stockholders should rest easy knowing the two “companies” are in the hands of such titans as M & P. Morocco is the kind of businessman who leaves the house in high heels and comes back in flip flops — without ever changing shoes. Pofzxskblswzxklzczski is the kinds of chap that gives Dracula diabetes. When it comes to public dollars, P & M resemble cocks scraping a dunghill for pickle seeds.

In an interesting twist, Morocco will remain Pukelea’s largest shareholder. Talk about having the cake and eating it too. And the rolls, pastries, muffins, and everything else in the refrigerator not Gorilla Glued in place.

Pukelea is said to be moving from the R&D stage to commercialization. Translated into English, this signals upcoming moves to raid the Pittsfield public treasury even more. You know the old story used by many a carpetbagger on the city: “It’s too insignificant to fail.”

In a statement, Morocco termed the moves by the Pukelea board as a “mutual decision,” meaning that he went kicking, screaming, and threatening to eat cranberries for the rest of his life. Cuz you know when they talk of “mutual decisions,” someone didn’t want someone around any longer for Some Reason. Hmmm, wonder what it could be?

Pofzxskblswzxklzczski, who turned 165 years of age this year, said, “I am not quite dead.”

Coulda fooled us.

What I remembered most about Matt Kerwood was his dogged pursuit of the Civic Authority. Did exactly what the GOB told him and is as inside as an insider can get. He will guard the finance info well.

When he was city councilor he liked to say “due diligence” a lot. and “another arrow in the quiver”

Another building department leader who is unfit for duty.I beginning to think this city is incapable of common sense.
Allendale school ,crosby, taconic need to close…
The rest of the schools would be manageable, we need to consolidate and save money and the schools are where you will save money or go bankrupt.linda will not be elected again if she continues where Bianchi left off, what is the point if mayor tyer become mayor Bianchi. …there is a reason she won hands down and Barry should understand it,if not say goodbye mayor tyer and blame yourself.it’s the 1st 90 days we will find out if we were correct in voting for you….almost every one neighbor is on ss at 1500 a month ,let barry know that’s why you there

On this issue, I believe Pat Muraca is right, while Dan Valenti has it wrong! Mr. Muraca pointed out Pittsfield politics is part of the problem concerning Pittsfield’s depressed local economy. The response of Mayors Jimmy Ruberto, Dan Bianchi, and now the lovely Linda Tyer, are to raise municipal taxes to put the squeeze on businesses so they either move out of Pittsfield or shutter their doors. Pittsfield politics spent several million dollars out of GE’s economic development fund on downtown Pittsfield’s arts projects. Meanwhile, Pittsfield lost thousands of jobs! Pittsfield is a case study of population and job loss, high taxes with a shrinking tax base, and G.O.B. political corruption!

Lets add to this that the population is so pitiful that even if there were job opportunities they would go unfilled. Freeloaders do NOT want jobs. This is our current population. We have companies right now trying to fill jobs and they can’t do it. I am not talking about minimum wage jobs here, trade jobs and professional jobs as well. The school dept. Plays a part in this. They are pitiful when it comes to vocational training! Things change, so change with it! By the time the. School committee does anything it is already obsolete. They are a bit better but BCC is no real bargin.
Enough said, I’m starting to ramble.

Your words are true Paul. The kids are not even equipped with the basic skills for job entry in the Trade industry. Case in point. The CNC Machine at Taconic that the Teacher doesn’t know how to run. So the Students are not getting hands on. When the new school is built, will there be teachers on board who are up to date with the industry? Will the kids know how to square up blocks in the Machine Shop?

You mean that teacher did not learn how to run the CNC Machine during all his ‘In Service’ days? I guess more In Service days are needed then, let’s say one per week?
Or the alternative is the teacher could just read the freakin’ manual.

I have friends that work(ed) for Nuclea. The offices in Pittsfield were strictly finance and headquarter type stuff. You wouldn’t see any lab equipment there regardless. The labs in Cambridge were downsized, hence the (ed) on the above, and focused on various things. They weren’t making money so now they are shifting their focus to almost solely blood testing and clinical testing. More streamlined. Pittsfields economy had little to do with this. Morocco took his money, false promises and ran.

Unless there is something we don’t know that happened regarding the Stanley Business Park?

Hey Dan, I went back and reread, and I did not see in yesterday’s column where you presented a scoop on the new appointments. It was about tall, old pitchers!

As far as the appointments go, I don’t know any of them, but two appear to have at least some qualifications to do their jobs (so long Sheffield Shuffler!) while the third…not so much. That one smells like repayment of a favor or patronage, sandwiched between two at least semi legitimate appointments.

Mr Change, my post never said anything about Allendale School. FYI, Allendale does not sit on a toxic waste dump. However it does sit next to the PCB dump on the other side of the school fence. If you are going to spout off at someone at least get your facts stright.
As far as the rest of your comment goes all I have to say is that if you can’t figure out what group I am referring to I have no intention of spoon feeding you.
Based on your post your buddy is about 60 yry old. Being that as it is my guess is he may have to find something that gets him by until retirement. My post had nothing to do with people in his position.
I truly wish him the best.

So what is on Guyers resume that qualifies him for this position? This is a big time serious job with a whole lot of people affected if it is not done properly. Was he selected from a list of candidates because his qualifications were superior or was he selected from the list of family and friends? Was anyone else even considered and if so who?

Having followed the Nuclea situation I’d say DV again is spot on. The company came in with many big promises (like the others mentioned in the article) but fufilled on precious little except to readily accept public funding.

DV predicted the company would fold before commercialization. BTW jobs lost according to Berkshire Courier are 39.

The sad life of a CEO in 4 easy steps:
1. Make alot of money mismanaging a company and screwing people.
2. Still drive the company into the ground despite step 1.
3. Be rewarded by said failure by getting another CEO job elsewhere.
4. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Has anyone seen No Clew Lew’s show? His sidekick this time was Poopdeck Pappy. Pappy and No Clew had the mayor on but seemed to forget that she was there. I couldn’t quite figure out if No Clew admitted that the GOB/SIG existed or not.

And Mayor Tyer, please be very careful about accepting ideas from GOB/SIGs. They are the ones who have brought our city to one step from Detroit.

I am disappointed in Linda Tyer for here choice for building and maintenance , in my opinion denis guyer has been given a political perk for his generous donation to her campaign , the man might of been a state rep which means the only time he gets his hands dirty is looking the other way or putting his hands in a cookie jar, what does he no about building maintenance ??? ok you can screw in a light bulb or two ,, who,s choice was this anyways Linda’s or Barry’s . I hope the city council will ask some serious questions about this curious stupid, yes I said stupid appointment that questions her integrity early in her administration …..

Do NOT expect this city council to question this mayor. They will subservient as instructed or their time on the council may be somewhat more stressful. I cannot picture one of them having the nerve to speak up on this issue. I can however see at least nine of them commending the mayor for having done due diligence and making an awesome choice.

I’m sure I’m wrong about all this, but I thought that jobs with the City had to be posted, with a diverse population encouraged to apply, and then after an interview process the best candidate was hired. Does anyone recall these jobs being posted or were they just handed out the night after the elections.

I wonder if the NAACP is going to be contacting the Mayor about her disregard for equal employment opportunities.

NEWS ARTICLE:

“Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer to replace finance director, other department heads”
By Jim Therrien, The Berkshire Eagle, January 22, 2016

PITTSFIELD — Mayor Linda M. Tyer is replacing three more department heads who served under the administration of former Mayor Daniel L. Bianchi.

The new mayor has submitted to the City Council for its meeting Tuesday the names of replacements for Finance Director Susan Carmel, Personnel Director John DeAngelo and Director of Building Maintenance Peter Sondrini.

Proposed as new members of the administration are former city councilor and current Richmond Town Administrator Matthew Kerwood as finance director, former state Rep. Denis Guyer as building maintenance director, and current Personnel Technician Michael Taylor as personnel department director.

“We thank them for their service and wish them all the best,” Tyer said Thursday of the officials being replaced. “Looking ahead, we look forward to working with Michael, Matt and Denis.”

The mayor said she doesn’t envision any changes in the duties for the new department heads, adding that funding for the salaries “will be covered within this year’s budget.”

Termination of department heads is at the discretion of the mayor under the city charter, but new appointments must be approved by the council. Tyer previously replaced former City Solicitor Kathleen Degnan on an interim basis for this fiscal year with the law firm Donovan & O’Connor, with Richard Dohoney as the lead attorney working with the city.

Kerwood, who served as a city councilor at large from 2000 to 2010, has been town administrator in Richmond since January 2009. He served as Blandford town administrator during 2007-08, and operated a business consulting firm in Pittsfield from 2003-07.

He was regional director with the Massachusetts Office of Business Development from 1998-2003, and he served as a legislative aide to former state Sen. Jane M. Swift from 1992-96.

Guyer, of Dalton, worked for 12 years with Crane & Co., negotiating purchase and service contracts for the Crane stationery division, monitoring supplier performance and contracts relative to quality specifications and delivery expectations, and performing other duties.

He was state representative in the 2nd Berkshire House district from 2004-11, representing 21 towns in three counties and Precinct 1B in Pittsfield.

Guyer also served on the Dalton Select Board from 2001-04.

Taylor has been in the technician’s post since 2013, working on a number of aspects of the department, including employee recruitment and hiring, contract negotiations and investigating employee complaints.

Tyer also is submitting to the council the name of Laura Catalano for reappointment as an assessor for another term.

Why is either Pat Muraca or Jimmy Ruberto or Dan Valenti right or wrong on the issue of Nuclea Biotechnologies closing its lab in Pittsfield?

On Jimmy Ruberto, he failed on economic development! KB Toys went bankrupt; GE Plastics sold to Sabic Plastics, which is currently moving out of Pittsfield this year of 2016. Pittsfield got hit hard by the great recession of 2007 – 2009. Thousands of jobs, businesses, population, were lost in Pittsfield during this time period.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Ruberto said he had a “rolodex” and then he spent millions of GE and public dollars on downtown arts projects, including the Colonial Theater and Beacon Cinema.

(See below my name, Mayor Jimmy Ruberto’s REAL record on economic development).*

On Pat Muraca, the man had it right about Pittsfield politics. For over one decade, Pat Muraca publicly pointed out that Pittsfield politics made things for business even WORSE! Pittsfield politics had one monolithic response to businesses, which was to raise taxes on them by about 5% each and every fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Ruberto (with the full support of the lovely Linda Tyer) spent millions of GE and taxpayer dollars on downtown Pittsfield’s art projects, including the Colonial Theater and Beacon Cinema. PEDA is turning 18 years old this summer of 2016 and has zero private investment, zero business tenants, zero jobs, and a lot of liabilities and PCBs.

Pat Muraca spoke out about Pittsfield politics G.O.B. corruption. Similar to Dan Valenti, Pat Muraca was a critic of both Pittsfield politics and Pittsfield’s depressed local economy.

On Dan Valenti, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to point out all of the failed public investments in failed businesses in Pittsfield throughout the years. Obviously, there is a long list of tax grants, credits, and incentives to failed businesses in Pittsfield. Pat Muraca’s Nuclea Biotechnologies is the latest failed public investment by Pittsfield politics.

Dan Valenti has consistently pointed out all of Pittsfield politics G.O.B.s, SIGs, Suits, vested and special interests, political hacks, career politicians, wanna-be’s, that have run Pittsfield into the proverbial ditch over the past 4-plus decades. For Dan Valenti to expect Pittsfield politics to change would meet the exact definition of insanity!

“Bump looks to address job losses in Berkshires”
2/19/2007 , By: Karen Honikel, (Capital News 9 out of Albany, NY covering the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts)
Governor Deval Patrick’s new Executive Director of Workforce Development isn’t wasting any time getting down to business.
Former State Representative Suzanne Bump is working to introduce herself to the local business communities and let them know she will make sure the Berkshires are not forgotten on Beacon Hill. She says a major concern right now is addressing the loss of jobs in the Berkshires.
Currently the Berkshires have the highest rate of job loss in Massachusetts. Bump says this can be changed with the right policies in place. She says she will be meeting with the Governor once a week to work on bringing skilled workers and higher paying jobs into the area.
Bump says a key part to local job growth and development will be finding a way to keep the younger workers in the Berkshires.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police are investigating what appears to be a murder after a Springfield man was found dead on Fenn Street early Saturday morning.

The district attorney’s office say at about 1:30 a.m. police responded to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive man near 129 Fenn Street — in front of Lach’s Lounge, across the street from City Hall, and less than 100 yards from the police station.

Officers found 30-year-old James Dominguez III laying on the ground and first responders were unable to revive him. He was transported to Berkshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police suspect the Springfield man was murdered and are seeking information pertaining to the events leading to his death. An autopsy will be conducted by the chief medical examiner in Holyoke to determine the cause of death but a time has not yet been scheduled.

Police are asking for anyone with information to call them at 413-448-9700.

According to Berkshire Superior Court records, Dominguez III pleaded guilty seven weeks ago to two counts of conspiracy to violate drug laws, and single counts of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of heroin with intent to distribute.

Those charges related to a search warrant executed on Columbus Avenue on September 25, 2014. He was arrested with two other Springfield men in that raid which police seized 300 bags of heroin, around 50 grams of cocaine, and $4,000 cash.

He was ordered to serve concurrent 261-day sentences at the Berkshire County House of Correction, which was time he already served awaiting the outcome of the case.

Speaking of Hill 78, has anyone given thought of where the D P W is going to move to? A few years ago the City Council was trying for 1644 East Street and was shot down because of contamination with PCB’s on the land. Also remember the Planet doing an extensive piece on it back in 2011. Mr. G. Is not far off when he tells us to keep an eye on properties owned by certain individuals and the underlings being put on Boards and Commisions and new hires, with the intent of pushing a lot of this type of garbage through. Does a property like 1644 East operate today as a functioning Property?
