QUESTIONS MOUNT ABOUTS HINDS’ CLAIMS, AS DOES THE SILENCE OF HIS CAMPAIGN FROM HONEST INQUIRY

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND EDITION, SEPT. 2-5) — On his website, Democrat state senate candidate Adam Hinds advertised Aug. 26-28 as the “Weekend of Action.” By the time the weekend was over and then some, his campaign had more “action” than it wanted. The campaign had been caught breaking the law twice, the candidate bailed out of two televised debates, froze in the flip-flop headlights on a key campaign issue, had his equivocating on key issues called to task, and had claims on his resume questioned.

Since then, it has sucked to be Adam Hinds. Where does THE PLANET begin? How about his resume?

Claims Without Evidence Are Suspect

ADAM HINDS (look closely in the background) (PHOTO: iBERKSHIRES)

Education — His website tells us that Hinds “studied at Wesleyan University before studying international law and negotiation at … Tufts University [THE PLANET‘s emphasis]” Elsewhere, he has said he “attended” these schools — but did he graduate? Did he earn degrees? Where’s the sheepskin? THE PLANET has seen no information substantiating that Hinds successfully completed the degree requirements of these schools. As of press time, The Committee to Elect Adam Hinds ignored our request for documentation. Is this what Adam Hinds is hiding?

Pittsfield Coalition Connection — Hinds claims to have “started” this anti-gang initiative. The PCC website, however, makes no mention of Adam Hinds, either as its founding father or as being involved in any key manner. Odd in the extreme. There’s no doubt Hinds cashed checks from the non-profit supported by taxpayers funds, but what else?

Northern Berkshire Community Coalition — Do you notice a pattern? Since moving to Pittsfield, Hinds has not held a private sector job. He has only held feathered offices with no accountability (has Pittsfield’s gang situation improved? How about Northern Berkshire’s  dreadful situation with respect to jobs, poverty, and drugs?) but lots of political connections. Is this all John Olver‘s doing? THE PLANET is certain it wasn’t Kofi Annan.

A Plethora of Political Suck-Up Positions

The “About Adam” section of his website had this vapid gem: “Adam understands what it takes to make the region thrive.” The paragraph explaining this topic sentence reads as follows: “He is working to keep young adults in the area through his work on the Steering Committee of the Berkshire Youth Leadership Program, a program of the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, and as a Member of the Berkshire Compact for Education. He is committed to our high quality regional institutions and is a Corporator of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Foundation and a Member of the Access and Benefits Committee of Berkshire Health Systems, the region’s largest employer. On a state level, Adam is on the Board of Directors of the Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps, and he is a Truman National Security Fellow.” The common thread continues: Hinds gets himself appointed to countless organizations that exist mainly to provide networking for political cringers looking to advance. Trust us: You don’t meet too many Mary Jane and Joe Kapanskis in such hob-nobbing.

How does that mish-mash of non-sequiturs illustrate that “Adam understands what it takes to make the region thrive”? And what does such a vague claim actually mean? If he understands this, why isn’t he sharing the knowledge that has eluded the best minds for more than a generation.

Hinds claims working for the United Nations for 10 years “on issues at the heart of US national interest in the Middle East.” He has produced no specific evidence. He claims to have been “a team leader” of a UN negotiation between the Kurds and the government of Iraq. “Team leader?” That could be telling a couple interns when people needed coffee or fetched papers. Again, the claim is unsubstantiated. None of this means it didn’t happen, just that, when pressed for details, The Committee to Elect Adam Hinds clams up.

Let’s Have Another Cup of Kofi

KOFI ANNAN, not to be confused with Coffee Anon. (PHOTO: UN ARCHIVES)

Then there’s his twitchy penchant of invoking the name of Kofi Annan, former UN secretary general. Hinds claims he and Annan personally and together tried to broker a ceasefire in Syria, but where is the documentation?

Kofi Annan or “Coffee Anon.?” The “About Adam” part of his official website ends with this sentence: “He … has a strong appreciation for a good cup of coffee.” THE PLANET is guessing that “Coffee Anon.” (Coffee Anonymous) is the closet Hinds got to “highest-level” negotiations with Kofi Annan and other “world leaders.” And no, we don’t count selfies of the sort that groupies produce to show they once actually breathed the same air as Britney Spears. THE PLANET has asked the campaign but has received no reply. We will share the substantiation the moment we receive it from The Committee. Of course, when the phone doesn’t ring, we will know it’s “The Committee” not getting back to us.

ADAM HINDS, with his, uh, high-level negotiators (PHOTO: The Berkshire Edge)

That’s the other creepy thing about Hinds’ campaign. His handlers seem to be doing everything they can to keep him from any sort of public events where their boy can face tough questions or actually have to think on his feet. One of the key people on his campaign, deep off the record, told us about the “thick binder with a ton of tabs” that Hinds needs on hand so he can “memorize his talking points.” That person also told THE PLANET that his primary strategy includes, and we quote, “At no point should you engage in public questioning with Dan Valenti.” If that is not accurate, THE PLANET will be more than happy to relay that information.

Money, Money, Money … It’s a Rich Man’s World

We leave on this note. On Aug. 31, the candidates filed their campaign finance reports. Andrea Harrington, who has won THE PLANET’s endorsement for the Thursday, Sept. 8 primary, raised $20,850 during the reporting period ending the last day of August and spent $15,221.54, leaving her with $5,628,46. Hinds raised $74,916.91 and has spent $54,680.95, leaving him with $20,235.96. Two questions:

  1. Do you think his backers are trying to buy the election?
  2. Who are his backers?

The first question we can leave up to you to decide. As for question two, click on this tab: http://www.ocpf.us/Reports/DisplayReport?menuHidden=true&id=582486#schedule-c

You will find tabs for “Summary,” “Receipts,” Expenditures,” and “In-Kinds” (the value of donated goods and services). You will find a practical Who’s Who of  “The Usual Suspects”: His donors include the Maxymillians of construction fame, Mary K. O’Brien, John Olver, Richard Stanley, Joyce Bernstein, Mike Supranowicz, Chris Farrell, Brian and Tyler Fairbank, David Bassaillion (of Hotel on North fame), and Kathy Yon. You get the picture or “nuff ced.”

DONNA TODD RIVERS, left. The sign says it all. (PHOTO: iBERKSHIRES.COM)

A curiosity in the expenditures are payment of $1,000 (May 22); $1,000 (May 30); $1,000 (June 27), and $1,000 (July 19) to Ward 5 city councilor Donna Todd Rivers. Reason for the expense: “Campaign Consulting Services.” Right. On Aug. 21, Hinds paid Rivers $2,500 for “Field Director Staff Pay.” Right again. DTR also received “reimbursements” of $180.99. These “reimbursements” were not documented.

That’s nearly $6,700 for less than three months of service. This would be innocent enough except that, the last time we checked, we did not see DTR listed in the Hall of Fame of Political Consultants. DTR is a failed attorney, a failed small business owner, and a huckster-slash-entrepreneur for the way she can get women of a ceratin age and/or mindset to all drink wine and paint the same boring picture of happy flowers in a sparkly meadow.

Obviously, she has others areas of expertise along lines with which THE PLANET is not familiar nor do we wish to be. Moreover, we find it a bit unsettling that a city councilor should be in so deeply, financially, with a man looking to be the district’s senate rep. For a sitting politician to donate money is one thing. Receiving money is another. THE PLANET can’t call it a conflict of interest, exactly, but nonetheless, something doesn’t seem right.

With that, let us open The Comment Line, encouraging intelligence and dissuading ignorance.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

At least three of these donors have gotten tax breaks from the city approved by the city council. One might wonder if this guy is for sale given this and the crowd he hangs with. Has he been fitted for his onesie that has POLITICAL PUPPET written on the back?

Have the school dept employees gotten their list of people to vote for yet?

I personally can’t wait to find out how Ben Downing benefited from this position. What we do know is Boston landed General Electric and they got 150 million to go there while Pittsfield has lost another 1,000 jobs.
Eversourse raised their rates 50 percent under all these people.Smithy and the rest of our elected people need to explain why these things happen.Boston is doing fabulous and these people oversee the destruction of every small city in the state of Massachusetts. Boston gets GE and pittsfield will be forced fed Walmart on the PEDA site…good enough for Pittsfields hood.

Still trying to get reliable number for students bailing on Pittsfield schools this year. How many were there last year and how many more this year? McCandless ain’t talking about it no more. He is red faced and speechless at the same time.

Terry Kinnas has this information. The numbers arent good. Last year Pittsfield schools lost about $5 million.

All the more reason to have more charter schools. Gives trad. public schools more competition.

Dan,

Not very hard to find Adam Hind’s educational background, found within 2 minutes of reading your blog this morning. Adam attended a debate last evening, just didn’t attend yours. Adam’s education found:

Wesleyan University

BA, Government, Sociology

1994 – 1998

Tufts University – The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy

Tufts University – The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy

MALD, International Law/Negotiation

2001 – 2003

Your info on Hinds educational background is not surprising. Majored in “government”….of course. “Government” now days is a dirty word. It’s in keeping with the jobs he has held.

And so he went to Tufts. Did he get a law degree or any other degree or did he just attend. There’s a big difference.

He has been bought and paid for by the elites in this city. I have received 3 very expensive ads for him, so far. Need I say more?

Why is this such a secret when it appears on every ad ?

Shelly, most of the candidates had paid consultants for both races. I think Delgalo was the only one that didn’t. His report appears to be wrong as he had no expenses listed. I’ve seen his lawn signs, so he had to have expenses.

The campaign I was involved with was run by volunteers. I’m tired from the last round. I’m sitting this one out.

Chris,

Now you can blame me for lots of things, but that isn’t one of them.

While on the council, I was the only councilor to propose a seven figure budget cut. I had the evidence why the money wasn’t needed, yet the motion failed 10-1 with me on the short end. I was successful proposing a $200,000 cut, the largest of and other proposed cut in my four year stint on the council. No other councilor proposed a six figure cut in my four years.

I was successful with many other cuts in my four years. So you can’t blame me for over spending. Lots of other stuff, sure, but not spending.

Donald Trump wants political advice on how to communicate his hate speech to people who fear diversity. He is a throw back to 1950’s America when McCarthyism, White Flight, and Jim Crow were still realities.
Elizabeth Warren wants the working man or woman to get ahead financially again. Ironically, that last happened in the 1950’s era!
Now, all of the wealth goes to the top 1%!
Globalization, Technology, Free Trade, Union busting, the Ruling Class bought and paid for by K Street Lobbyists, all leaves the working class getting the shaft!

Also, Linda Tyer and the nepotism within all the municipal departments is disgusting. Just when you thought our city couldn’t get worse after Bianchi’s…. WRONG. Tyer and her Chief she hides behind have absolutely no plan for my children’s city. As far as change, it starts with honesty, common sense and transparency, all shown by this candidate who , to date has spent only around$3,000.00. Mayor Tyer is now Patty Bouvier. She can ok the spending of impoverished tax payers home owners and show up at photo ops.Dan Bianchi was certainly capable of this and definitely qualified to run the city.
Linda Tyer was elected to do the opposite of what Dan was doing. She was not elected to take us off a financial cliff.Linda what are you thinking going along with the status quo and upping the anti on what we did not want.
Get a vision or get out.Put together a 5 year plan to downsize our schools
Pittsfield needs you to use what we have given you.Do not move in the direction of the herd. You have been hired to lead us in a different direction. And stop the absolute nonsense of 2200 jobs avaiable.Shake it up.

Like to thank B Clairmont for responding to questions on this site. Don’t blame him for bloated, irresponsible budgets. I blame Pittsfield voters, if you don’t like what’s happening put a stop to it. Was alittle amused at him defending his record, stating his proposals for cuts. I love the game the council plays at budget time, each one calls for cuts for something knowing there’s not enough votes for it to pass. That way they can tell everyone, willing to listen I tried. I call it the Pittsfield shuffle, only thing is taxpayers get it in the end, literally!

The Barry Clairmont Story…born in a one room shack and captured by aliens, as a child Barry had a hankering for politics and numbers and was so full of numbers the aliens dropped him back to earth to settle in Pittsfields proverbial political ditch. He would soon become a Super Star as an adult saavy Politcal Veteran who would become Pittsfields premier City Councilor only to reject re – election and become the right hand man for the future Mayor of the City.

Would make a great film DV. You already have Denis Guyer cast as Lex Luthor in your Superman film. After you write the scripts for “The BC Story” who plays Barry? Pacino’s too old. How about Tom Sakshaug??!

The Berkshire Central Labor Council has come forward to say that a Super Walmart is an “insult to the community”. Obviously they are representing local businesses who are fearful of a Super Walmart. Just as local businesses here in Pittsfield put up a big stink about having the Berkshire Mall locate here which is why it is located in Lanesboro. These labor unions are only worried about the companies they represent and not the future of the city. They are NOT looking at the big picture. Their narrow mindedness is what is holding back the economic growth of this city. Add narrow minded local politicians to the mix and that is why there is such a lack of good paying jobs in this area. A Super Walmart shouldn’t be a “threat” to the people of this area.

Local politicians are hoping that the Berkshire Mall fails, local unions don’t want a super Walmart, they just want to keep Pittsfield a school city. The big earners from the school department don’t care if there is a local mall here. They travel anywhere they want to go because they can afford to go to Albany or Holyoke or they order their stuff online. Either way, they don’t care about the rest of the city who either can’t afford to travel or maybe don’t even own a computer to order online and therefore need places to shop in this area that are affordable!!!

I agree with all of these reasons–except the catalyst. Walmart survives by giving people what they want at prices people are willing to pay. I can understand how local businesses are threatened. The catalyst could occur because people will have money money to spend on services that Walmart does not provide. But don’t expect high-end specialty stores to blossom..

Really? do you have that much hate in you?

He was a prepared and diligent councilor. I agreed with him about 35% of the time – but the only person I agree with 100% of the time is me.

There really is no place on this blog or anywhere to make the sort of accusations you make. You disagree with him, I get it. You don’t like his demeanor, I get it. If he’s gay straight, or identifies as a woman in a man’s body – he still put forward the ideas he had and had the balls to run for office.

When have you ever put your hat in the ring, walked around the City asking for votes, and then taken pot shots from people that don’t know you but make judgments about you anyway?

I replied to one of the posts about Barry C. that was in the older posts. It was wisely deleted by DV. It was a hateful post.

Now that it’s deleted, mine makes no sense!!
