‘PATRIOTISM’ IS NOT NATIONALISM, or TO STAND OR NOT TO STAND?

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY FEB. 17, 2020) — On this President’s Day, THE PLANET asks about “patriotism.”

As a child who grew up in the halcyonic Fifties and who “came of age” — a term subject to many definitions — by the mid-Sixties, we loved America, or should we say “the idea of America.” What else would one expect during a time of the Red Scare, TVs The Big Picture, McCarthyism, John Wayne, playgrounds, Davy Crockett, Ted Williams, the atom bomb, and church on Sundays?

Mom used to tell the story of how, as a lad, THE PLANET would stand before the television set, hand over heart like the ballplayers, while the “Star Spangled Banner” preambled a baseball game on “The Game of the Week.” We made no evaluations and felt no need, not with the acceptance that youth has of the good and bad in life, and certainly not with the soft padding of innocence that cushioned the blows and turned most everything els into a kind of wonder and magic.

Things changed in the late 60s, or do we have to say?

“It’s your thing. Do what you want to do with it.”

“Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll.”

JFK, RFK, and MLK assassinated.

Malcom X. Urban renewal. Black Panthers. The Monkees.

Who could you believe? What could you trust?

In 1968, Apollo 8 orbited the moon just before Christmas. We were in our junior year at PHS, eight months into an apprenticeship in the drafting room at GE (Bldg. 28) and head-over-heels in love with a girl from Connecticut named Linda. When we saw “Earthrise,” the famous photo of earth taken by the astronauts, the upending of everything assumed a perspective. From 238,000 miles away, our world hung in the blackness of space as a blue-and-tan pearl of infinite worth. Then and there, we perceived unity, all mankind sharing this planet, no boundaries keeping “us” from “them.” The Age of Aquarius.

The photo shocked us into an epiphany that our history classes only touched upon: national borders are arbitrary and fake, no more “real” than a Bigfoot, no more permanent than the foam that rides the surface of a lapping ocean wave. Nations erected borders as a result of war. At that moment, we realized that patriotism should not be confused with nationalism. The first stems from love, the second from a bullying and militaristic might — probably the most misapplied of all our survivalist necessities.

But what of the difference between patriotism and nationalism?

An incident at Nicholas Senn High School in Chicago helps us explore the question.

On Jan. 30, the school had an assembly honor Hispanic heritage. The ceremony began with the “Star Spangled Banner.” Students were asked to rise. All did but Tionda Cobb, 18, and Yesica Salazar,17.

Two teachers approached them and gave them a choice: stand or leave. One of the teachers told the girls that standing was a way to honor those who gave their lives for the country. The girls refused, saying they were protesting racism in America and police brutality — the “usual suspects” always found as residue from The Kaepernick-Smollett Effect. The teacher, a white male, then allegedly then asked the girls if they were on the free-lunch program at school. He then allegedly said, “Go back to your country.” One of the girls is an American citizen.

The girls were allowed to remain in the room, the anthem concluded, and the school conducted the event without incident.

Two weeks later, a student took to social media about the incident. Since then, fights have plagued the school on Chitown’s North Side. One student, 15, has been charged with assault on a Cobb staff member. The teacher in question has been suspended pending an investigation by the Chicago Public Schools and the D.A.’s office. This punitive action, of course, amounts to guilty until proven innocent — prejudged guilty of being white and male.

Such is sad case of justice in this fragmented and accusatory time. No habeas corpus. No presumption of innocence. Everyone so hair-triggered to be “offended” by everything and everyone else. Everyone a “victim.”

Patriotism? Nationalism?

There’s a bit of both in this incident.

We’ll let you sort it out.

Happy President’s Day. Now go out and buy a car.

Dan, I’d love to buy a new used car to replace my 15 year old one with 150,000 miles, on Presidents Day, but I can’t afford it. Getting screwed big time with the property tax increase and the water and sewer increases. Got any winning lottery numbers for a Kapanski?

The only thing keeping the wolves at bay are the cops. Anybody disrespecting the national anthem by taking a knee because of alleged police brutality should never call the police and wear a DNR bracelet so when they choked on their own bs, the cops they hate so much will know not to say their sorry ass.

On 2/16/2020, The Berkshire Eagle’s city reporter Amanda Drane wrote: “Mayor Linda Tyer will also announce the launch of a new economic development initiative this week. Her office plans to provide more information at 11 a.m. Tuesday [2/18] in council chambers.”

I wonder if the lovely Linda Tyer’s new economic development initiative will include lowering municipal taxes, fees, and debts/liabilities? Mark Tully recently wrote on Dan Valenti’s awesome blog that Pittsfield (Massachusetts) has the 2nd highest commercial or business tax rate in the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Pittsfield also has hundred of millions of dollars in municipal public debts/liabilities. Pittsfield also has a shrinking population/tax base where hundreds of living wage jobs have been lost over the past 2 decades. Somehow, the vested (Big 3 public workers’ unions) and special (out-of-town millionaires) interests always win, while Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski’s family always loses in Pittsfield politics. It is Robin Hood in reverse for the hard-hit working class Pittsfield taxpayers.

Matt Kerwood has $10.1 million in his slush fund account in City Hall. Yet, he still uses “creative accounting” and his long-time friend Scanlon as his recurring municipal auditor. I could do the same thing as Matt Kerwood! I could overtax the Kapanski family, and put their excess tax dollars into a slush fund, too.

Then you have Pittsfield Economic Development Authority (PEDA) business park, which sits polluted and empty for over 2 decades now. How much longer will PEDA stay fiscally solvent? Then what happens to PEDA as the 2020’s decade progresses forward in time?

Then you have the EPA and GE settlement last Monday, 2/10/2020. It was based on a false promise because there is no financial commitments from GE to pay for the expensive cleanup projects that will take years to complete and hundreds of millions of dollars in payments. Worst of all, Lee (Massachusetts) will get an industrial toxic waste dump.

Would you trust GE after it has committed tens of billions of U.S. Dollars in accounting fraud since 1995, which is being investigated by the SEC, to agree to an empty promise to cleanup the Housatonic River of PCBs chemicals without making a financial commitment as to how much money they will pay for the project? Moreover, GE has tens of billions of dollars in toxic debts it cannot sell off or possibly pay for. What if GE files for bankruptcy in the middle of the cleanup project? Who will pay for the remaining cleanup then?

In closing, Pittsfield/Berkshire County has gotten screwed over by both Pittsfield politics and the General Electric company!

Pittsfield politics shakes down the working class taxpayers instead of investing in them. There are winners and losers in this shell game, and Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski always lose!

At least Matt Kerwood has his $10.1 million slush fund to move the Kapanski’s tax funds around different municipal accounts. I guess that is all that matter in the lovely Linda Tyer administration.

And who is really benefitting from all these “economic development initiatives?” Could it be special interest folk? Are these “initiatives” dreamed up specifically to line their pockets and not really necessary at all? How about a vibrant, dynamic forensic audit since the city is apparently rolling in overtaxed money? I do not see a downside so what is the holdup mayor?

The Constitution protects against compelled speech – be it repeating the pledge or standing for the National Anthem. You have no obligation to conduct compelled speech.
The police have nothing to do with constitutional freedoms and have done nothing to protect them and therefore have nothing to do with it. They are not the army.
I can not bear the perpetual victim approach of all the lefties. And I can not bear the smug attitude of most police, who tend to be recruited from the bottom of the barrel, shy of a elected official.
This is a good article:

Great article Kermit Frog. Whites are told to forget about their white identity while non-whites are told to celebrate their race and not to assimilate into American society. Whites who insist on celebrating their white identity are called “racists”. In order to have a country we need to have patriotism since it celebrates and honors out country regardless of what race we happen to be. We need to have certain symbols and rituals that we can all respect in order to honor out country.

Nationalism is about honoring the needs of your country above those of other countries. Globalists hate Nationalism because Globalists want everybody to see themselves as world citizens and not citizens of a particular country. The hypocrisy is that when it comes to world citizenship, we are all encouraged by the Globalists to be as one family, but when it comes to your own country, the message is just the opposite which is to NOT acknowledge the fact that we are all Americans. This idea kills patriotism and creates governments like the one we have now where nobody can agree on anything.

Anybody disrespecting the national anthem by taking a knee because of alleged police brutality should never call the police and also should wear a DNR bracelet so when they choked on their own bs, the cops they hate so much will know not to save their sorry asses. The police risk their lives every day in this country for ungrateful people llike you, and it is an honorable and esteemed occupation, and actually attracts plenty of smart and dedicated and selfless people, and not the bottom of the barrel. You have no obligation to stand for the anthem, that’s true. But the police are the only thing standing between your freedom and total chaos, as in robbing, raping, looting, etceterra, you and your loved ones, and if you are going to disrespect police by kneeling during national anthemn over fake news about racist police, then don’t call the cops when you need them.

Dummy Up.

If I was in peril, without knowing anything else, I would absolutely prefer that a fireman came to my aid. Generally speaking, firemen choose their profession because they want to help/save people. Generally speaking, that is not all the caae for cops. Morally complete, outstanding human beings like officer Darren Derby are the exception among cops, definitely not the rule. Not the case among firemen. My guess is that you prefer the vengeance aspect of policing. Not unreasonable if you have been deeply affected by crime in some way, but make no mistake, I’ll take a fireman over a cop any day.

Why? Why can we criticize politicians and not cops? How many people do you know who embezzle from their employer? I don’t know any. Yet the MA state police have an entire division. How many Pitts cops in trouble with the police for stupid crap? Cops are so fragile in their egos and so aggressive in any question of their perceived authority.
Also, I don’t believe the police stand for anything like you suggest – common decency and civility do. I think those comments are ridiculous. Years ago the power went out in New York City – police couldn’t do anything and there was no looting or rioting – why? A connection to the community.
Cops achieve nothing without a connection to the community and that is what the objection to the national anthem is about.

Johnny99

The objection to the anthem
is based on fake news – the cops are not a bunch of racists and the cops are standing between order and chaos and you can take a knee all you want for all the wrong reasons, but don’t be a hypocrite about it and then call a cop when you need help. And maybe educate yourself on the truth – try The War on Cops by Heather MacDonald for starters.

They are saviors and preventing chaos in the sense that they are the first, and really only, line of defense between a mostly peaceful society, and a total free for all, where in the bad guys takes what they want, whether that be sex with our daughters, or just our possessions and money. Here is a case in point, thanks to the liberal DA’s.

Nobody wants to eat fish every day and that includes eskimos. You are going to have to learn how to whack a walrus over the head with a Billy club or run down an elk with a snow mobile.
On the other hand if you are big business like Oil or coal or steel the government can give you a huge tax break worth possibly billions of bucks. Now don’t be confusing that with a handout . Johnnies food stamps are handouts. Farm subsides are not handouts. And being able to write off billions in taxes because of loop holes is not hand outs either. Section eight is a handout though. Do you see the difference here? If the money/handout goes to a wealthy person or business it is NOT a handout. Bank bailouts are not handout either. Stop your whining.

How about “red flag” laws Dan? Patriotic to oppose those?

Unconstitutional laws. Violation of several amendments to Bill of Rights. 2nd and 4th for sure. No due process , guilty unless YOU can prove yourself innocent. Thank Gov.Baker for signing this law and the stooges infesting Beacon Hill for passing it.

There have been incidents here in Massachusetts of this abuse, and in other states:

https://www.thedailysheeple.com/outrageous-84-year-old-korean-war-police-veteran-school-crossing-guard-has-guns-confiscated-under-red-flag-law/

“Just last week, a man in Florida had his firearms confiscated simply because he had the same name as a criminal. That’s right. A man was stripped of his Second Amendment right…because the police failed to differentiate a law-abiding citizen with a thug. ”

Case law.

“The general misconception is that any statue passed by legislators bearing the appearance of law constitutes the law of the land. The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any statue to be valid, must be in agreement. It is impossible for a law which violates the Constitution to be valid. This is succinctly stated as follows:

“All laws which are repugnant to the Constitution are null and void.”

There needs to be a big fat civil lawsuit against states that have enacted these unconstitutional laws. And the people who enacted them removed from office as they have violated their oath of office to uphold the US Constitution. That will pretty much clean out the Massachusetts Statehouse.

See the last part of “Penalties”!!!

They (sanctuary mayors/governors) have let these feral beasts loose in the USA, too commit MURDERS, plural!!!

Read the statute:

Moreover, if the violation RESULTS IN THE DEATH of ANY person, the defendant may be PUNISHED BY DEATH or by imprisonment for any term of years.

Hang them HIGH!!!

Local police do not enforce Federal laws. Would you like the FBI to hand out speeding tickets? Also, ICE detainers are not indefinite. Holding releasable accused persons is a huge local cost burden.

I think TSC might be suggesting that you need a more balanced view of the world. Fox news, Breitbart and Hannity seem to have skewed your vision of the real world. You lack objectivity in my opinion.

Put employers in jail who hire illegals so that there is no incentive to be here. One year mandatory. Trump and Romney would not entice unlimited cheap labor undercutting American citizens. My view is very conservative.

E Verify would help to stop some of this problem. Big companies and the Chamber of commerce don’t want E Verify. I’m surprised that the unions aren’t putting up a bigger stink about it to protect all the American Workers and the ones who belong to unions.Open borders or a less restrictive border will not help the incentive at all. Cheap labor is something that has been sought no matter the party affiliation for a long time.

Whatever your cause, whatever your beliefs, you will always be able to scrounge up anecdotes to support your position IN A COUNTRY OF 325 MILLION. Dan, your Chicago example is truly pathetic. Means nothing. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Sheer stupidity. Extrapolating that into a trend is seriously weak. Completely undercuts your credibility, fyi.

Most gun control and most gun murders in the nation, Chicago. Chicago is a truly pathetic democrat enclave.
Run into the dirt by dirty Democrats like Rahm Emmanuel (sp?) , and Barry Sotero.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/2020/2/1/21117923/january-2020-monthly-crime-stats-chicago-police-shootings-homicide-gun-violence

“Shootings, homicides increased in January compared to 2019: police

The 34 murders reported in January this year are a 55% increase from the 22 reported during the same period in 2019, police said.”

Nancy Pelousey’s SF is not far behind. Homeless hovels abound and human feces covering the sidewalks.

https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/map-street-sidewalk-poop-feces-311-report-waste-13278828.php

“Unsurprisingly to anyone who’s ever braved a San Francisco sidewalk, the city had the highest incidents of feces complaints in 2017 compared to New York and Chicago. Nearly 21,000 poop sightings were reported in San Francisco in 2017 — about 10 times New York City’s poop-sighting total and more than 20 times that of Chicago. On average, there are 455.89 complaints filed for each of San Francisco’s 47 square miles.”

Baltimore, the “rat capital of the USA”, is another example of liberal policies.

https://dailycaller.com/2019/07/28/baltimore-rat-infestation-documentary-trump/

“In September 2018, another Baltimore Sun article quoted then-Mayor Catherine Pugh as saying that the problem was so extensive that “you can smell the rats.”

Do not believe for a moment that Bagdonavich did not sign over his balls to Trump for the pardon. Look for him to be campaigning and kissing Trumps anal canal right up until the election. Trump owns this guy and everybody else he has pardoned. And they would not have been pardoned without giving over their soul to him. MAGA These are moves he has learned from Mr. Putin.

Your candidate Bernie Sanders is having a love affair with Putin, Russia and all communist countries. Bernie even honeymooned in Russia. So Romantic!!! Did you complain about all the pardons from former Democratic presidents and wonder why Obama or Clinton pardoned some really bad guys?

Trump was going to build one of his famous towers in Moscow with Putins blessing. the only thing Putin knows about Bernie Sanders is that he is going to hack our elections so he can’t win. Just like last time.

Does Lovely Linda write her own speeches? A second grader probably knows more about baseball than she does. I would think she would be totally embarrassed for the latest comment. Lovely Linda hasn’t even gotten the City out of the dugout. She is two for two in totally stupid comments in less than a week. Last week the stupid comment was about no applicants fitting in with her organization’s culture. Dan, did she ever get back to you to explain this comment? I am also wondering who will keep this new dynamic website up, hope it is not the same person that works with the City of Pittsfield website. It only took someone almost three years to remove Officer Coco from the site. He was fired, served time in prison, released and all those years he was listed as the baby seat installation expert.

I heard on the news that the Mayor was going to give a press conference about a new economic development initiative, so I tuned into PCTV during a break at work to watch. I was extremely disappointed to find out it was only about a new website and more propaganda about how many businesses the red carpet team has helped. I was embarrassed.
