PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION JUNE 5-7, 2020) — He had good and bad in him, like all of us.

THE PLANET won’t presume to “know” George Floyd or what kind of person he was. We only know some facts about his life plus what those who knew him say. Did he deserve to die in the manner he did? No. Does the country deserve to be further torn by this one life? Also no.

Friends describe Floyd. as a “gentle Giant.” Family describe a good man, good father, quiet — you know, all of the angelic things they say about someone after he’s dead. Only the good die young and all that eulogic rubbish. Those are post-mortem opinions. Now some facts:

  • Floyd had a three children out of wedlock.
  • In 2017, he left the woman and children in Houston to go to Minneapolis.
  • In the 1990s and the first decade of the 200os, police arrested Floyd nine times.
  • He did five stints in jail.
  • He had two convictions.
  • One of the convictions was for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Floyd and four accomplices drove to a woman’s home. He and one of the band entered a woman’s home, with Floyd’s accomplice wearing a blue uniform posing as a water department employee. Floyd pointed a gun at the woman’s stomach. The other guy guarded her, hitting her in the head and side with a pistol while Floyd searched for money and drugs. He found none but made off with jewelry and the woman’s cell phone. An alert neighbor took down the license plate of the car. Floyd was convicted and sentenced to five years.
  • Prior to his death-by-knee at the hands of the Minneapolis police, he tried to pay for a purchase in a store with a counterfeit $20 bill.
  • When police showed up, Floyd resisted arrest.
  • The Hennepin County medical examine found drugs in his system at the time of death — “recent use of methamphetamine” as well as fentanyl.
  • He had narrowing of the heart arteries.
  • Floyd had asymptomatic COVID-19, but he was out in public without a mask, capable of infecting others.
  • One of the two with Floyd in the car as he was arrested has outstanding arrest warrants in Houston.

That’s the George Floyd you didn’t know. George Floyd, Bad Actor. Quite a contrast with George Floyd, newly canonized saint.

Before anyone screams at THE PLANET for being the messenger, we note that none of this justifies officer Derek Chauvin’s 8-minute knee-pin. Floyd did not deserve to die in the manner depicted in the now-infamous video. The other responding officers were complicit. All four have been charged in connection with Floyd’s death, Chauvin with murder.

That used to be justice.

It no longer is in America. Justice now takes the form of looting, burning, and murder.

Social media turned Floyd’s death into a cause celeb, and a lot of good might have come from it. It served the black community with a huge opportunity — its Big Moment to show that it, too, realizes that America is and must be a nation of laws. Events placed the golf ball fat on the tee, with an opportunity to “drive the green.” Instead, the black community shanked badly to the left. The mishit not only prevented the good that might have come from Floyd’s death. It set the cause back, forcing authorities into strong-arm tactics.

“I swore an oath to uphold the laws of our nation,” said President Trump, “and that is exactly what I will do.”

Trump promised “bold, definitive, and unapologetic action,” calling himself “your President of law and order.” It echoed Trump’s winning strategy in 2016 as “your candidate of law and order.”

Black Lives Matter.

So does The Rule of Law.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

As bad an actor as you portrayed the man he suffered for many minutes and begged for his life. An animal would have gotten more mercy.According to the family he was turning the corner to that aspect. What does that have to do with the officers brutality or his past. His family loved him and forgave his sins and 14 million dollars of love has poured into an account to help his family.

Great column, amazing how all the facts about George Floyd never made it to mainstream news. Thanks for publishing this info.

The mainstream fake news also glossed over the death of a noble citizen named David Dorn, a retired 77 year old black St. Louis Police Captain – shot dead by looters while he was providing security for a pawn shop. Truly tragic loss.

Trump was willing to call in the military to defend citizens and I applaud him for that. And the swamp response? Mad Dog & other military leaders criticized & threw stones at him, while Cuomo & DiBlasio continue to allow NYC to be destroyed by Antifa and other bad actors

Trump 2020!.

Facts are verboten to the leftist mainstream muse because once you start dealing with facts you have to answer for them. The left never answers for anything that contains substance or truth because that leads to a narrative counter to their own. The day the media and the left own up to their feckless failures of suppressing the truth will be the day, superman returns touting truth, justice and the American way

All the information in the above column has already been published In The main stream media you are decrying. What do you think.Dan went out to Minneapolis and did his own Investigation? And while some ofTrump’s base may have been ignited, it is shrinking and formerly loyal people are finally calling him out. There was no Antifa looting NYC. That was done by cowards committing crimes of opportunity. This I know first hand. Just saying hes the law and order president does not make him so without real action. How about being the uniting, society healing president? Nope, much easier to threaten with “ominous weapons” then shoot peaceful protesters with rubber bullets and pepper bombs. He’s toast. That’s why hes now brought in a private, unidentified “army” with accountability to no one. This is an unprecedentedly dangerous time and this guy is more and more isolated every day. He will turn the weapons of the mightiest country in the world against it’s own people if he thinks it will help him remain in power.

Mr. G, globalist troll,
What mainstream rag has printed Floyd’s complete criminal past as researched by Dan, above? This info IS widely available on conservative sites.

No antifa in NYC? Do you have proof of that?

Trump wasn’t elected to be a “unifier” – he was elected to kick out the swamp dwellers i.e. globalists seeking to destroy the U.S. in favor of one world government.

I’m glad he called in the military – these out-of-control mobs financed by Soros will respect military might. Bravo Trump! Meanwhile the NYC violence continues while Cuomo/Diblasio refuse to call in their national guard to protect people & property. Intentional destruction of the city!

Received a letter today from Greylock Bank President. At first I thought it was going to be an apology for the long lines at their drive thru’s, but no, it’s an apology for being white, load with non-sense, and claims that law enforcement is racist, as well as all other “systems” in Berkshire County. He is out to lunch, and I am taking my substantial business to another bank:

In the past week we have all witnessed tragic events across our country. Even as communities work to recover from COVID-19, we are now confronted with the aftershocks from the brutal death of George Floyd, and from the countless murders of other Black Americans through the months, the years, and the centuries of our national struggle with racism.

The truth is that the daily brutality of racism is not confined to law enforcement or the criminal justice system. The insidious force of racism pervades every system in America and Berkshire County, from housing to education, to government and media, and to the business community and the financial system. So while we must confront and mourn the reality of Mr. Floyd’s horrific death, all of us in positions of influence must also commit every ounce of our energy to changing our own practices inside of our organizations and industries.

I am grateful for the leadership of our volunteer Board of Directors and employees at Greylock Federal who have committed to long-term change across the domains of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility. We have made progress in changing our hiring practices and policies, and we have expanded access in many meaningful ways. But we know that we have a long way to go to achieve true financial inclusion, and I deeply appreciate the counsel of Black leaders, advisers and mentors in helping us shape our approach.

At a rally this past weekend I heard a group of young protesters chanting, “No justice, no peace.” Achieving real, sustained social justice requires achieving economic justice. And economic justice relies upon an inclusive financial system, and upon inclusive business practices. This work starts with me, and people who look like me, who are in positions of leadership.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” So, people of Berkshire County, where is our voice? Where is our action? What are we willing to do to assist people of color and show our belief that we are all truly created equal?

We need to listen respectfully to our Black neighbors and colleagues, and we need to act, now and for generations to come. Precious lives depend on us making real and systemic changes.

This letter is offered with the full endorsement of Greylock Federal’s Board of Directors.

Bissell is right, in the past week we have all witnessed the despicable looting, rioting, arson and murder, including the execution of a 77 year old retired police captain who happened to be black, died while streamed on facebook live, shot by looters. While we can’t shop at most stores, or let our kids play in playground, democrats let looters, rioters, and killers run free, and now they want to defund the police. Perhaps these are the after shocks he writes about. Myabe somebody should tell BIssell that most murdered blacks are killed by other blacks, not the police. And that blacks have been given preference for years in college admissions and governement employment.

I agree about the Greylock letter. After the Angelo Stracuzzi debacle I switched banks. After the commercial loan officer DiCenzi got nailed for fraud, my family members transferred their funds out of there. The letter that was sent out yesterday was approved by the WHOLE Greylock Board which is even more troubling. Pandering, social justice warrior crap that should not have been sent out. What purpose did that serve, other than to alienate customers who know the truth?

Blue lives matter too Dan. I am Got Damn sick and tired of people claiming that law enforcement is racist. It’s a flat out lie. There are over 10 million arrests per year. The vast majority are without incident. Only 10 blacks killed by police last year that were unarmed and all but 2 were justified. Whites are way more likely to be killed by police, despite the fact that blacks commit 8 times the amount of crime as whites. If black males weren’t committing so much crime, the cops wouldn’t be interacting with them so much.

Dan, thanks for telling it like it is. Floyd was an irresponsible person, who got caught committing another felony, and resisted arrest, was doped up, and was taken down by a mixed bag of cops. Race had nothing to do with it.

Your handle is hysterical. Your sense of irony is somewhat lacking. Have you ever seen the Errol Morris film by that name? That’s when the phrase “thin blue line” first started being used widely. The prosecutor in the Randall Adams cop killer case used the phrase in his closing argument. It was a powerful appeal to emotion and it worked. Mr Adams was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death.

There are plenty of goofy handles here perhaps, but the thin blue line isn’t one of them, and in fact the dedicated and selfless police are the only thing preventing complete chaos, and that is what the thin blue line refers to. Just look what happens when looters run wild because police are ordered to stand down. Although cops put their lives on the line everyday for the likes of you, since you don’t appreciate them, don’t call them when you need them.

Blare

Maybe try addressing what I say instead of putting words in my mouth and attacking those. I appreciate and respect good cops more than just about anyone else in society. Someone like Darren Derby, who sees the importance of planting the seeds of good relations with cops at an early age and has been rewarded with ridicule on this board for his efforts.

Contrary to your BS, I am as law and order as they come. Without law and order we are lost. But that’s why it’s so important to get rid of the many bad cops and make sure we can have complete confidence in anyone who wields the power of a badge and a gun.

In that regard, people like you are a big part of the problem. You spout the same talking points and rhetoric as the police unions, who protect all cops at all cost and have never acknowledged a bad or guilty cop among them. THAT’S why people don’t trust the police – because they have such a horrendous record of policing themselves.

Maybe that will change once the James King case comes before the Supreme Court. We’ll see.

I responded to this nonsense at length, but my post appeared then disappeared. Not in the mood to repost it. Suffice it to say you are waaaay off base. You spew the rhetoric of police union leaders, who have never seen or heard of a bad cop. It’s insulting to the public and undercuts the credibility of the many good cops who are out there. It also makes it virtually impossible for cops to police themselves. Cops back cops and rats get dealt with accordingly. That’s the creed that has ruled police stations for a long time. It needs to change.

Everyone has a past. I don’t care who you are now. Donald Trump had a daughter named Tiffany out-of-wedlock prior to marrying the 2nd of three wives named Marla Maples. Trump has 5 children from 3 mothers – all of whom he openly cheated on. He declared business bankruptcies multiple times over, and he is the first President in decades to not release his federal tax returns. Trump has business ties to the German Deutsche Bank, which receives a lot of financing from Putin’s billionaire Oligarchs in Russia. Trump is a White Nationalist who has political ties with far right neo Nazi political operatives like Stephen Bannon. The military establishment is accusing Trump of using Nazi tactics against civilian protesters. Trump’s 2020 campaign strategy is to blame China for all of our country’s problems. Trump is scapegoating the Chinese race like Hitler scapegoated the Jewish race nearly 90 years ago. I am rooting for Joe Biden for U.S. President!

Yes, both Black Lives Matter as does the Rule of Law. So, does the United States Constitution – every word of it and its intent.

In my 66 years of life, I’ve never heard members of the clergy, and I am referring to those Episcopal rectors in Lafayette Park Monday evening, called “terrorists” as they were by “President” Trump and his allies.

I do enjoy listening to all of us good ol’ white men and women whining these days from the safety of our homes as we sip our morning coffee, chewing on a piece of toast, talking about the “rule of law” while our President sits on his fat ass on a gold toilet Tweeting on an iPhone. Such a fearless leader. Such brave souls are we!

Nothing will change. Mattis sure as hell hit the nail on the head, and that peeves all of us white folk more than anything, especially the conservatives among us.

Not to digress from the importance of current discussions, but a few posts back someone wrote for a change it would be nice to have sports talk. Well, here’s a good one. Issac Percy, Taconic High School senior, is 2019-20 recipient of the John “Honey” Lahovich award, annually given to the best basketball player in Western Mass. This is a big deal for a high school kid. This award is voted on and given by Springfield and West. Mass. sports experts. For a Berkshire player to receive this honor is extraordinary. Last time a Pittsfield player received it was 2005. Congratulation to Issac Percy. It is a well deserved honor for Issac and Taconic High School.

Why is the black on black crimes such as murder, drugs, and many others swept under the rug in Chicago and other big inner cities? If they felt black lives really mattered they would have nuked these places by now. The race pimp hustlers don’t show up there to make a stance on a continued basis. They do a occasional drive by to make it look good. Take the politicians, hustlers and money away and much more would get done.

Currently turning lives around? What’s happened to the last 30-50 years of supposed turning lives around after TRILLIONS spent on inner cities and social programs? The only thing that’s changed is the year and politicians, well some politicians anyway. It’s always some issue or someone’s fault other than those who are actually responsible. Never the corruption or the people’s fault. Victims or victors is the choice people make.

Agreed. Misbehavior by law enforcement is a major problem because of the amount of power cops and prosecutors wield. But the racial aspect of all this, which has been accepted without question, is really troubling. It is not borne out by the data. Here are the numbers for the U.S. in 2018:

-44 million black population and 250 million white population
-209 blacks were killed by police, 399 whites
-132k black violent crimes, 237k white violent crimes
-4,778 black murders, 3,953 white murders

Strictly as a relative proportion of the population, blacks are 2.5x more likely to be killed by police (not the 6x or 8x cited by luminaries like Pres. Obama, which is part of the problem – false info). But that ignores criminality. (Cont’d)

I have two other posts about this that are awaiting moderation. I would not say “way less”, but it is true that as a function of violent crime, whites were 20% more likely to be killed in 2018. I am NOT citing these numbers for racial scorekeeping, which will hopefully be clear if/when my other posts appear.

Blare

Presumably, the vast majority of police killings occur during the commission of violent crimes. Once we factor in violent crime data, it turns out that in 2018 (latest data year available) whites were 20% more likely than blacks to be killed by police as a function of violent crimes. If you look only at murders, whites are 130% more likely to be killed by police as a function of white murders.

It is sad that racial “scorekeeping” like this is necessary. There is no denying that the historical black experience with law enforcement in this country has been horrific. Acknowledging and atoning for the past is necessary. But propagating a false narrative about the present is not the way to go about it. An individual case like that of Mr. Floyd is just that, an individual case. It stirs up strong emotions, but it is specious to use it as a barometer for all of law enforcement and the country.

Given the prevalence of video recording in our culture these days, we are going to occasionally see awful cases like George Floyd’s again in the future. In a country of 330 million, it is unrealistic to expect otherwise. If every individual case is successfully positioned as a reflection of the “system” and all cops and used as a pretext for mayhem, we may as well give up now. (Cont’d)

(last) The main “structural” problems concerning police brutality and corruption are the doctrines of qualified immunity for cops and absolute immunity for prosecutors. Absolute immunity for prosecutors is going to be difficult to unravel in the courts, which is why it is essential that citizens get involved in local DA elections. It is the only real way to hold prosecutors accountable for misconduct.

But qualified immunity is rightfully being scrutinized. The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear the case of James King, a student who was beaten by law enforcement in a case of mistaken identity, then charged with 3 felonies for fighting back (he thought he was being mugged). It is a fascinating case and might lead to real change. Here’s an overview for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae144gGrfjQ

Two of the worst police misconduct videos I have ever seen concern Mr. Floyd and a guy from Arizona named Daniel Shaver. One black, one white. We will see what happens to Mr. Floyd’s killer. Mr. Shaver’s executioner was acquitted of all charges, then granted a lifetime pension (at 28 years old) of $30k per year on account of the mental distress caused by killing Mr. Shaver.

Cases like these demand justice. Maybe the King case will be a first step in positive change for all parties. Except for the bad cops and abusive prosecutors who are out there.

Again, it is the infection rate that matters, not the number of infections. Of course the absolute number of infections is going to rise, because the number of tests continues to increase. But the proportion of positive tests is also falling. Example: Early on in New Jersey, a huge % of tests were coming back positive – over 50% on some days. That number has now dropped to about 3% of tests coming back positive.

More importantly, it is looking like asymptomatic COVID carriers are NOT spreading the virus, as perviously thought. The vast majority of infections can be traced to “super-spreaders,” which means that viral load likely plays an important role in the process of becoming infected. This gives us FAR greater flexibility in terms of keeping COVID under control.

All of the news about COVID recently has been positive. You are mistaken, JA.

Not true. In the U.S. in 2018, blacks comitted a total of 2.2 million crimes, whites 5.6 million. Given their population sizes, that translates to blacks committing 2.2x more crimes per capita.

Violent crimes were 146k for blacks, 230k for whites, which is 3.6x more black violent crime per capita.

Murders were 4,778 for blacks, 3,953 for whites, which is 6.8x more black murders per capita.

Yes, more black crime per capita than white crime, but not 8x more by any measure. The most lopsided crime sub-category is murder and even that doesn’t reach 8x.

I think accuracy matters when it comes to these things.

Hers the sad thing – NFL, Target, Amazon, Greylock et al, are now pandering to blacks not because of Floyd’s death and not because of the protests, in blatant violation of social distancing emergency orders that resulted in arrests and charges for otherwise law abiding citizens trying to let kids play in parks or run businesses, they are instead pandering because blacks burned and looted and killed innocents in their cities. So Dan, since you concede that Floyd’s background and actions didn’t warrant his untimely death with a foot to the neck long after he stopped breathing, what exactly was the purpose of the reporting? So that deep down people could say “see, he deserved it”? Is that how you feel deep down? Clearly that’s the sentiment of many of your loyal followers judging from their posts. I’m just not seeing the point of your reporting. I get the guy wasn’t a saint, but I just don’t get why it’s relevant to this situation.

jon doe
jon doe
Reply to  danvalenti

Dan,

You say “It’s relevant because he had just been caught passing counterfeit money. He was in a car with a dude with outstanding arrest warrants. He was a convicted felon. He resisted arrest. These are mitigating factors in the ensuing events”. The definition of mitigate is “lessen the gravity of a mistake or offense”. I don’t believe his history or actions, lessen the fact that he was killed, which was the primary ensuing event. Yes, he brought the arrest upon himself, but he did not bring his death upon himself. If he was resisting arrest and fighting with officers and had a heart attack and died, one could say he brought it on himself. But when a 200 pound guy purposely keeps his knee on the neck of a guy for three minutes without a pulse, there is no mitigation. The really disturbing things are that 1.) the cop had no problem doing it,acting with impunity with people watching, and 2.) if there weren’t people watching and recording, then Floyd would have just been listed as a guy who had a coronary while resisting arrest and that would have been that. Which begs the question, “how often do similar events happen?”.

Lastly, listing his background as a mitigating factor is similar to how sleazy defense attorneys try to bring up a rape victim’s sexual history as if they somehow deserved it. Even if someone is a nymphomaniac that doesn’t meat they can be raped without consequence and even if someone is a complete scumbag, that doesn’t mean they can be executed by a cop in broad daylight. Nothing mitigating about that.

Dan,

Thanks for the tip. I did look up the story and it’s another horrible example of abuse of authority by police. When I googled it, it appeared that every major news outlet in America covered the story at the time. As for why it didn’t gain the traction of Floyd’s death, I would guess that the black community has more pent up frustration with abuse of authority by police than the white community. But thanks for reinforcing my point that God only knows how many deaths are covered up when there are no cameras rolling.

Dan, that is the best article I’ve read in the media since this whole thing started. I can remember when the media use to simplify report the news and left the commentary to those who wrote such things and commentary was not disguised as news. Furthermore, the media reported what was going on not what to think about it because they were fully aware we all had a brain.
This is the same problem we have in our colleges these days. They are teaching what to think not how to think.

I agree with Mark Levin that all of these so-called important people like politicians shouldn’t have protection either if they propose taking it away from others. I think my family and friends are important as I’m sure every person does about their own family and friends, so why should only certain groups be protected? No police then all people will need to be fully armed just like in the Wild West in order to protect themselves. Gun ownership would be absolutely essential for everyone with no police and no prisons since murderers, rapists, arsonists, and looters would be running wild.

Floyd was not convicted of passing counterfeit $20. Essentially innocent. He wasn’t even charged. Where did the fake money come from? The answer to that question is probably alarming. Someone potentially scammed Floyd.

That’s quite possible, maybe he was set up. The deep state has no scruples, it took out JFK back in 1963 and is on an all out mission to take down the current president, no matter what the casualties are.

Cuomo’s donors are the reason he quietly signed legislation shielding hospital and nursing home executives from any lawsuits stemming from the covid outbreak.
As you recall, Cuomo directed NY nursing homes to take in residents with covid.
He has blood on his hands.

We need the City Council way less than a police force,we need police. You have a finance director and mayor, why not just switch the Mayors role for now to town manager and have kuffkinks manage the accounts? Cut city council, save on pay, insurance, they are useless anyway.

Women will be the first victims of reduced or no policing. Anyone helpless…people living alone, the elderly. Ilan Omar being behind it goes right along with her own daughter giving out information about the location of the national guard to people who were not just protesting. People having to put signs in their windows so their businesses aren’t burned down? Many were burned and/or looted anyway. This sounds just like Nazi Germany.

Another one of your posters makes a great point – just because Floyd presented a fake $20 (allegedly) it does not mean he was deliberately trying to pass off fake money. Counterfeits are often very believable, that’s why they have the marking pen at the cashier. The other day I had a $100 that I THOUGHT was fake, it looked very odd for some reason, and felt different from other cash as well. The only way to know was to have a cashier mark it for me.

Bringing up Floyd’s past is stupid. Because one, it has no bearing on the events of the day. And two, if these details about his life WERE known to law enforcement, it begs an argument that they felt justified in the unnecessary force and the intention was pre-meditated.

You cannot take another human’s life. You cannot kill them. You just can’t. It’s really that simple.

I agree. It’s wrong to take another human’s life. I wish the media would give the same amount of attention to David Dorn, a black retired 77 year old police office who was killed during the protest by 6 young men all over a television set. Actually, good news on this. I just heard there has been an arrest in this case.
