MASSIMIANO’S ‘LEGACY’ ISN’T ‘COMPLICATED’ but ONLY TOO SIMPLE AND CLEAR

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY JULY 6, 2020) — The Boring Broadsheet‘s washy editorial on the demise of Carmen “Butch” Massimiano called his legacy “complicated.” The truth about this despicable public figure? His “legacy” was simple.

THE PLANET broke news of Massimiano’s death eight days after he died. Certain public officials knew the day it happened, but the family hid the news. Not one word. Extremely odd, wouldn’t you say, for a blowhard who idolized public idolatry.

Some have called his death “the end of an era.” THE PLANET calls it “the end of an error” — a grave error that, perhaps more than any single instance, help send the once-great city of Pittsfield into the slime, with a reputation for child rape. The bubble burst for the Catholic Church. The bubble burst for Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Will a bubble meet a pin-prick here?

———- ooo ———-

We won’t get into Butch’s Boy’s Club phase: the naked swimming,” Camp Russell, what took place in the Club’s lockers and rest rooms. Thankfully, we had no direct experience with Massimiano at the Club.  It’s like saying you’ve had no personal experience with a Komodo dragon.

Today we confine ourselves to some of our personals dealings with this man who, in honest cities, would stand as much chance at prominence as crab grass on a green at Augusta.

That said, a word about the “free swim,” brought up in The Weekend Edition by one of our commentators, who mentioned the Club’s “weird vibe.”  We swam there during the winter, along with brothers, cousins, and friends, but we never showered at the Club, especially after the new addition in 1962. Puzzling if you think about it, because we often worked out there — dodge ball, basketball, boxing, the gym. True sweat equity.

Once after a game of tag ball, we went to the lockers to dress, drenched in sweat. Red Plough, Jim Mooney’s assistant, tried to force a shower. we refused. Meanwhile, our dad showed up on Melville Street to pick me up on that cold, drizzly night. When I didn’t appear on time, my father went into the club, down the locker room, and saw Plough confronting me.  My father lit into him like a hot coil, saying if Red or anyone else ever tried to do that again, there would be brimstone poured into an open wound. After that, no one gave us a hard time. We were golden.

The incident reveals the zeitgeist of the Club, that “weird vibe.”

———- ooo ———-

THE PLANET will now share three personal encounters with Massimiano, representative ones.

The Fight.

Late 1950s, Mt. Carmel School, south yard. We are there with friends. Butch and other kids also there. Butch is seven years older than your correspondent, who is 7 at the time, and a year older than Pete. Butch starts picking on a kid with a braced leg and shoves him to the ground down. Pete goes over, pushes Massimiano out of the way, helps the boy up. Pete then challenges Massimiano to a fight. Butch turns tale, losing face.

As Wordsworth said, “The child is father to the man.”

The Altar Servers.

early-60s. Several friends were altar boys at Mt. Carmel. Massimiano, one of the older altar boys, sucked up to the priests, earning the “gold cape” — chief altar boy. Stories abounded through the grapevine of Butch using his status to bully, steal, and even fiddle some of the boys. The ones who would have cracked his skull open, he doesn’t touch. He only goes for those he can intimidate and silence. It establishes a pattern.

The Call-in.

2003. THE PLANET doing his morning talk show on WBRK. Topic: the State Legislature’s move to legalize gay marriage. A former former city councilor calls to expresses support for the measure. This caller says they have known many gays and lesbians and, as in all groups, there are mostly good with some bad. She gives examples mentioning “our county sheriff.” Show ends. Within a minute of getting off the air, the phone rings. It’s Massimiano, ranting: “What’s this I hear about calling me gay?” He then bursts a vein protesting too strenuously that he’s not gay, he despises gays, he’s a married man blah blah blah. In between the lines of this protest, we hear “I’m flaming pink.” Click.

———- ooo ———-

Carmen Massimiano leaves no “complicated” legacy. It’s a simple one.

Sic transit gloria.

Hello Dan Valenti, I believe you should write that Carmen Massimiano was part of an old school ring of Catholic power hungry homosexual deviants in Pittsfield (Mass.) who either sexually abused children or knew all about it. Gerry Downing and Daniel Ford prosecuted the criminal case against Bernard Baran in the 1980’s. Cliff Nilan was Angelo Stracuzzi’s Probation Officer after Angelo’s 2004 arrest in Maine for sexually abusing underage teenage boys. Cliff Nilan, Carmen Massimiano, Angelo Stracuzzi, Gerry Downing, Daniel Ford, et al, all covered up the ugly truth for each other over the decades of Carmen’s dominating rule over Pittsfield politics. Thank you for hearing me out on all of this. I still believe you, Dan Valenti, mean well. Best wishes, Jonathan Melle

Dan – one week ago, Monday 6/28, I posted a small verse which I’m sure you’ve read before.
Double space below the verse I typed, “someone big is dead”. I came back a few hours later to find that it had been totally ignored except for the expected thumb down symbol x 4. One acknowledgement and you would have scooped the Eagle by four days. My feelings toward Butchy mirror yours.

Sorry, my post was 6/29 and the Boys Club guy was Plouffe. He was a very capable pitcher for PHS in ’53, ’54 and ’55. He left the club around 1960 and went on to direct the Hinsdale Youth Center.

It’s like trying to report a stolen wallet in NYC. The precinct will argue with you on where it happened (the subway? What street where you under when they took it?) till the point that it’s Kafka-esque. I have no idea who the victims could even go to be heard. It isn’t like there is someone speaking up in a position of authority to hear them. Given the reporting done by ESPN on Camp Greylock (and that that camp was named in a lawsuit) – I think there were very likely to be stonewalled reports. The Eagle is a puppet paper – worse than no daily paper these days.

Massimiano and Mooney built a club of pedophile groomers. It’s no secret. The only thing is people don’t want to talk about it.
I don’t think Massimiano was gay I think he was just a pedo who as he got older the “kids” got older. They say being gay wasn’t a choice, he was making a clear choice.

When we were growing up my brother wasn’t allowed anywhere near Camp Russel. Red was the main groomer. He would find the ones that were the most compliant and most vulnerable. If they followed his instructions the demands got more sexual.

It’s no secret except the Pittsfield police, state police, various DAs, and elected officials did nothing about it. It took decades for the paper to do a hack job of reporting when there were dozens of people that told them of the abuse.

The Berkshire Eagle did the community a real disservice by never reporting on this. They allowed victims to happen.

Massimiano’s legacy isn’t complicated he was a pedophile who was protected by every institution in the Berkshires.

If you have any evidence that Pittsfield Police, or state police, or DA did nothing with a prosecutable case, let’s hear it. Pittsfield covered up nothing.

If you never look for evidence or investigate there is never a prosecutable case, which seems like exactly what happened.
The 2012 reports – did they get sandbagged too? Lots of protests here from you – do you feel defensive? A LOT of people from different political stripes seem to think they guy was shifty.
Maybe there was no cases reported at the time but with the wall of corruption no one would know if anyone odd complain.
It’s interesting how many Richmond big wigs are on the record for ‘pro’ Carmen. The town can’t possibly still liable be for Camp Russell? They must like him as a person. They seem to be the home for disgraced public officials.

I don’t know if Deval is on any record for Carmen. He IS on the record for firing the public servant who wanted his brother in law to registered as a sex offender. Good old liberal Deval didn’t think wife rape should make his relative have to qualify as a sex offender. The state employee who thought he should be registered was fired. Subsequently, said brother in law raped his ex wife again. We aren’t talking about ‘he said she said’ after two bottles of Chianti – we are talking about the dude breaking into her house and hiding in the closet and then attacking her like a serial stalking rapist.

If you were wondering who I mentioned from Richmond re Carmen it’s in the Eagle aka dirty bird. They quote an eminence, former MA yadda yadda somebody with an Irish surname which I forgot – from Richmond. — Foley maybe? Read the article. The Martins Law Firm (Richmond people) are professionally associated with Carmen’s relative. I don’t know that man and he obviously can’t help who he is related to.

Plenty of people have. It didn’t matter. The same way Nilan’s daughter got off for hit and run is the same way Massimiano got away, the same way Stracuzzi got away with attempted sexual assault and never did day one of any probation.
If you think a guy goes to Maine and then decides to try and molest kids, you know he’s been doing it here.

Whether something is considered “evidence” is determined by the cops/authorities. Which the never happened with Massimiano. Which you cite as proof all was above board. Funny stuff.

The Berkshire Eagle is called “The Dirty Bird” for good reason! If you are a decent and law abiding citizen, the Dirty Bird will twist the proverbial knife in your back. But if you are a corrupt political hack, they will write glowing words in your favor. To illustrate, Gerry Doyle sold out Pittsfield when he signed the 2000 Consent Decree, but the Dirty Bird is all for post industrial Pittsfield’s collapse, such as Pittsfield’s symbolic failure that is the 22 year old polluted and empty so-called business park ran by the useless PEDA board. Carmen Massimiano is just the latest example of the Dirty Bird’s fourth-rate journalism and horrible coverage of Pittsfield politics.

Hello Rinaldo,

With the June 25th (2020) death of Carmen Massimiano, Dan Valenti’s awesome blog has discussed Pittsfield’s scary path of local Catholic leaders (Carmen Massimiano, Angelo Stracuzzi, Cliff Nilan, the late Gerry Downing, and Daniel Ford) being part of a ring of sexual abusers against children. The tragedy of Bernard Baran may be the topic that bursts Pittsfield’s decades long bubble of secrecy.

I always read your op-ed pieces, where you bring your legal analysis of political issues facing Pittsfield (Mass.) and beyond. I have a request for you to please write an op-ed about the tragedy of Bernard Baran. In particular, I hope to read your written thoughts about Prosecutors Gerry Downing and Daniel Ford withholding audio tape recordings of the children they accused Bernard Baran of sexually abusing from his trial in the 1980’s until a couple of years after Berkshire County District Attorney Gerry Downing’s death in late-2003. Why did it take the next Berkshire County District Attorney, David Capeless, so long to release the long hidden exculpatory evidence to the Massachusetts Appeals Court that led to Bernard Baran being released from Massachusetts State Prison? How could something so wrong and illegal happen for over two decades? Why doesn’t the Berkshire Eagle cover any of this? Would the Berkshire Eagle publish your op-ed? What are your written thoughts about the tragedy of Bernard Baran, who was a then teenage young adult homosexual man in the 1980’s, who was framed and railroaded by the illegal prosecution by Gerry Downing and Daniel Ford back in the 1980’s? Why doesn’t David Capeless come clean about his role in all of this?

Rinaldo, you are a good friend of mine. I support your political advocacy. On a personal note, the tragedy of the late Bernard Baran bothers my conscience. I believe someone out there should get to the bottom of all of what happened to this persecuted homosexual man named Bernard Baran who was raped and beaten over and over again in Massachusetts State Prison for over two decades for crimes he did not commit. I believe he knew sensitive information about homosexually deviant Pittsfield’s Catholic leaders, so they used every unethical trick in the proverbial book to get him out of the way to save their own skin and cover their own behinds.

Best wishes,

Jonathan A. Melle

Dan,
I love how you and others talk so nasty about someone who is now dead and can’t defend themselves! Why didn’t you publish any of this when Carmen was alive?? We’re you scared of him? I love your style but when you do things like this you are no better than those you post about. Regardless of what Carmen did or didn’t do, he has a family that most likely, didn’t do the things he is “alleged” to have done. Think about them is all of this or at least have the decency to say “ I couldn’t publish this while Carmen was alive, I was scared of him” talking about ANYONE who can’t defend themselves is something the eagle does, you want to be like them???? And for all the other posters who are doing the same….. I have seen many of them run into Carmen and kiss his feet! But now he’s dead and everyone has something tough to say. Who are the real cowards here? Also remember….. nothing has been proved and Dan your pretty good at proving things and you haven’t offered any real proof that Carmen did anything to any “boy”. So if you can’t prove it, probably shouldn’t join the rumor mill like the rest of the people you constantly talk about doing so.

As I posted here over the weekend, no one else has ever come forward publicly. Unless someone else does, or someone knows something the rest of us don’t, it’s time to let the man rest in peace. I understand totally your bringing this up with the sheriff having recently “passed on”, because it affords victims another chance to come forward if they were too hesitant before. As an insider, I can tell you there was no coverup, at least in Pittsfield, none whatsoever. Connor Barry could sniff out a frozen pile of dog shit 6 feet under, pun intended, and although I heard he had other leads about sheriff and other community big shots, he was not able to get anything to hang his hat on. If you recall, your blog hammered this whole thing out pretty good back in the day, and there was lots of innuendo and smoke but no fire. And to the dirty bird’s credit, they did run the story. People that are not in a position to know run their mouth like there was this massive GOBSIG coverup all these years, and with Pittsfield’s soiled underwear, I understand that too, but I can tell you, at least at the Pittsfield Police, there was no such coverup.

It was previously stated that the DA’s Office does not fund the police, however, the DA’s office compensates the Task Force,

“Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force”

Formerly known as the Berkshire County Drug Task Force, The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force is a collaboration of full-time police officers from different jurisdictions throughout Berkshire County. These officers are assigned to the task force to investigate crimes within the jurisdiction of Berkshire County and to work with other State and Federal Agencies when necessary. Officers work on both a full-time and part-time basis and manage their cases through the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. Officers are assigned the task force by the Chief of Police of their respective communities. They are compensated by the District Attorney’s Office at no cost to their municipalities and work alongside members of the Massachusetts State Police Narcotic/Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s Office. The primary responsibility of the task force is drug investigations.

It seems jobs provided from so called non profits to certain players are tailored made for the sjw’s to rev things up under some organization with a great sounding name. It gives the non profits who truly do good for communities a bad name. Some of those employees at the top make a decent salary. Many of the same employees at the top run multiple organizations and get paid by each one.

I would pay to hear the diatribe of The creepy former Sheriff alone. And to say things are being said about this former lout is preposterous, Planet continually challenges those in power or were in power. Especially if they’re no good

Planet doesn’t discriminate! He takes on all. If you want the puff piece crap, your looking in the wrong place for it here. I’d rather hear it like it is and not like others who tell you what they think it is. You are doing your job right when others attack for doing it right.

Christopher Wray says China is trying and succeeding in stealing personal information from all Americans. Half of the FBI’s counterintelligence cases are related to China. Biden/China is not our friend.

China wants Biden to win in November. Biden is China friendly. Biden said “Come on, man, China doesn’t want to eat our lunch.” Biden thinks that China is completely harmless. Why does he think that?

CHICAGO, IL—Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called this past Fourth of July weekend where 79 were shot in the city a “mostly peaceful” weekend at a press conference today.

“It was mostly peaceful, very calm, lots of people enjoying themselves, very fun,” she said. “Yes, there were a few run-of-the-mill murders and shootings, but hey. We just call that a Saturday here.”
“Other than the people getting shot on basically every block, it was largely calm and peaceful.”
Lightfoot also pointed out that most people who committed murders were practicing social distancing and wearing masks. “Encouraging” surveillance footage showed that Chicago’s murderers are using hand sanitizer and wiping their weapons down after each murder. “So, by that metric, I think it was definitely a success. We’re making a lot of progress on that front.”
She further stated that she suspects the murderers are actually paid Trump supporters trying to make her city look bad.
