PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

ADD 1 FEB. 11, 2021 — Through miracle of high tech (satellites, e-patches) + low-tech (paper clips, bailing wire), THE PLANET can post this brief message to y’all. We’re enjoying our time, and a wild one it is (in literal but exhilarating sense). Glad to see folks still having YOUR SAY! So important at this precarious time. Good also to see our robot army keeping system up and running. Like the bread company ad: “Untouched by human hands.” Gotta go — uptime expensive and scarce at our location. We send our love to all.

———- ooo ———-

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, VACATION EDITION POSTED FEB. 8 et. al., 2021) —  It’s time to vacate.

This week, THE PLANET is off into the wild.

Fear not, however. We have you covered. For the remainder of this week, The Comment Line shall be open, your big chance to play assignment editor by selecting the topics you wish to cover, uncover, and discover. Lots to talk about.

  • Yesterday’s Super Bowl. Did we call it or what?
  • Impeachment trial No. 2. Begins Wednesday. Ends TBD.
  • Ambrose Bierce at Chickamaugua.
  • The Boston Bruins and the best record in the NHL.
  • What Dr. Fauci meant when he said, “Stop doing this.”
  • The “houseless” situation in Pittsfield?
  • Certs as a candy mint, not a breath mint.
  • Bike lanes and no brains.

Use your imagination.

Keep it clean and real.

Say something.

THE PLANET‘s army of robots plus shall be monitoring.

We’re outta here.

Be good.

Be safe.

Later.

I would be upset if I was “houseless” in Pittsfield and I had to live under a tree, while Matt Kerwood sits on a +$10 million slush fund that belongs in the pockets of the overtaxed local residents and small businesses. Matt Kerwood and the lovely Linda Tyer could use Pittsfield politics huge slush fund to help the homeless instead of screwing over Veterans, Senor Citizens, and other fixed and low income city taxpayers!

There is going to be more houseless folks in Pittsfield in the near future, if the high rate of taxes and fees aren’t confronted. People losing houses will be seeking shelter along with those already seeking it. The mayor needs to start thinking about her spending and tax relief priorities and who is really benefiting.

Unfortunately the new houseless will be the owners of rental units who haven’t been able to collect rent for a year and can’t evict the non paying slugs. Tenants don’t have to pay even if they are working

Tax Breaks (aka TIF’s) for dummies :

1) Take some of your extra millions that are just laying around and invest them in something profitable (flipping rental units, new construction or a ski resort)

2) Put on your finest set of knee pads and kiss the city’s A$$.

3) Pay no taxes the first year, then only 20%, 40%, 60%, etc the following years.

It’s the MILL TOWN way!

The left is teaching the young to yield to big government in everything. Our social service agencies are teaching young children to snitch on their parents if they do even the smallest thing that the state deems wrong for the wellbeing of children. A 3 year old, Victoria Rose Smith, was murdered by her foster parents just a few weeks ago after she was taken from her biological mother and put in the foster care system for years. The final violation for the biological mother was when she fell asleep in the home with her 3 children after a rough day with the 2 boys. The boys ran to a neighbor’s house and reported this “abuse” and all kids were put in the foster care system for years. Some foster care parents were good, but the last ones were abusive and beat the 3 year old girl to death. The biological mother is now saying that the state gave her no chance to get her children back.

Every single blog in Pittsfield has been filled with hundreds of complaints from Pittsfield taxpayers pertaining to the dynamic and vibrant bike paths on North Street. Yet the puppet trio of White, Kavey and Lampiasi voted to keep them last night. Goes to show that these City Councillors are basically telling us taxpayers to stick it up our butts, that they could care less what our opinions and wishes are! Time to vote these puppets out and get some new councilors that listen and vote to honor to the views of us hard working taxpayers. Time to clean house!

Sounds good except they all think the same way. They all walk in lockstep so voting in different progressives may no longer work. They are pushing bike paths so much even during blustery winter weather because the future is going to be public transportation. Bikes will be one option besides public transportation although not for anyone who is older, which by the way, will soon be a large proportion of the population. Older people are not going to be biking in ice, snow and freezing temperatures. Too many broken bones in that scenario.

Ben Downing would make a great Governor of Massachusetts. I think it is cool that a Berkshire County politician may represent us in the Governor’s Office. Charlie Baker is a failed Governor. Baker’s Holyoke Soldiers Home debacle where 78 Veterans from around the Northeast died of COVID-19 demonstrated his failed management. I believe Baker’s failure of Veterans is the WORST debacle in the history of Massachusetts state government in over 400 years! Governor Baker recently oversaw the botched vaccination program. When my dad was a Berkshire County Commissioner from 1997 – mid-2000, Charlie Baker worked for the Weld and late-Cellucci administrations where Boston’s “Big Dig” was financially mismanaged with multibillion-dollar cost overruns. Then bureaucrat Charlie Baker was the financial official who oversaw the single most expensive public works project in U.S. history where innocent people were killed and millions of gallons of dirty water leaks each and everyday. Governor Baker’s latest budget proposal lowballed fiscal year 2022’s state budget by billions of dollars so he can blame the state Legislature when they (hypocritically) vote to raise state taxes to balance and fund the next state budget. Governor Baker is a political insider that has been part of the political establishment for decades. If Charlie Baker was just an average politician, he would not be in elected office. In closing, I hope Ben Downing will be elected next year as the next Governor of Massachusetts.

While Americans are being told to double mask, the Biden administration is creating tent cities in Texas and allowing untested illegal immigrants to enter the country. Not a complaint from the liberal media. It’s all beautiful. 700 unaccompanied minors are in these tent cities and have been encouraged by the Biden administration to make the treacherous journey to this country. The Democrats just see them all as future Democratic voters and it’s more of their agenda of the transformation of America.

Very strange reaction during the ZOOM CC meeting by Mayor Tyer when challenged by Maffuccio pertaining to the number of residents that have lost their lives to Covid. in Pittsfield. Funny that Kavey knew the correct number. Why is she stuck or lying again at the number 49 when records are showing almost double that? Why are Pittsfield numbers not being updated in her mind. Maybe she has been speaking with Cuomo on how to alter numbers and lie. Yet, for some reason she gets totally vibrant and dynamic when she and her boy toy Morales talk about testing the shit of taxpayers. Speaking of Morales, anyone else notice that since he took the job the streets are getting worse, he loves bike lanes so much that most side streets are now down to basically bike lanes due to snow because his “contractors” don’t know how to plow. Yet his department has been given all new vehicles with plows that ride around all day with the plows up. The only possibility I can think of with both he and Tyer is that their brains are being disturbed by the stench of hardworking taxpayer shit while they continue to spend time in having fun with their little expensive experiment in Shitsfield.. What a vibrant and dynamic couple working for the taxpayers of Shitsfield.

It is funny reading peoples comments on city council social media posts. I see people arguing it improves the look of the city, are you kidding me? There are cones all over the frickin place because no one knows where the hell are they going. The bike lane and changes to North St have got to be the dumbest thing I have seen in Pittsfield in years, and that is saying ALOT. Again, we are in a pandemic and losing not only lives, but businesses and jobs and all the council seems to focus on is trash & bike lanes.

Speaking of jobs & businesses. I have to imagine this bike lane is finishing off what is left of North St. Between the lane confusion, meter maids, and hooligans why would anyone go to North St for anything? These idiot councilors have made patronizing a restaurant or business on North nearly impossible and I can’t be the only one who avoids going down it at all costs.

There are 2 political parties on paper, but in reality, there is only one political party: Incumbents. The ruling elites say they have different political views to the masses, but in truth, they all enrich themselves and their wealthy donors. At the end of the business day, Wall Street always wins, while Main Street always loses. The thing most people don’t understand is that economic growth doesn’t happen in the majority of the country. In fact, only a small amount of the country reaps the benefits of economic growth. Just look at my native hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Over 3 decades ago, GE left Pittsfield in a perpetual state of economic distress and inequality. GE had its best economic growth numbers in the roaring 1990s, although it is alleged GE used accounting fraud to create billions of dollars that never existed. In 2021, Mayor Linda Tyer lives in a wealthy gated community close to Hancock, while inner city Pittsfield is a case study in intergenerational poverty funded by the Boston Federal Reserve Bank. Pittsfield has one of the highest commercial tax rates in Massachusetts, while bureaucrat Matt Kerwood sits on a +$10 million slush fund. Large photos of Pittsfield by Gregory Crewdson are exhibited in London, NYC, and L.A. as “A City in Decay”. In brief, Pittsfield is a case study of the negative impacts of economic inequality and the great disparities of so-called economic growth. When my dad was a politician decades ago, I saw how state and local politicians operated. They were totally disconnected from the people in Western Massachusetts, but if a little guy like my dad (or me) spoke out to them, we faced retribution. They ruled by fear and strong-arm tactics. The politicians who were mean to my dad (and me) are now retired and they all use their political connections for their own financial gain, such as running a marijuana business, and Stan Rosenberg, Peter Larkin and Dan Bosley being registered lobbyists on Beacon Hill where they make 6-figure incomes on top of their taxpayer-funded state government pensions and public perks. “PAC-Man” Richie Neal really represents K Street’s corporate lobbyist firms in return for his multimillion-dollar campaign funds. In closing, I agree with you, Patrick Fennell, that Western Massachusetts has received the proverbial shaft, while the politicians all took care of themselves at our expense.

I don’t think Jon at the time understood the true nature of politics and especially locally where few control the many and how down and dirty it becomes when you challenge the powers that be. The debate over whether or not to abolish county government was a very hot and emotional issue with millions of dollars at stake for GOB/SICs. Jon’s dad fought hard to retain county government and that put him at odds with the powers that be (Including Andy Nuciforo, who championed the abolishment) and put a target on his back (Politically). And it became nasty, which Jon had to witness, as his dad was beaten down. But no one ever lost respect for the man and it was never personal…Just politics. But the ordeal was a traumatic one that has forever tainted Jon’s behavior and view of Berkshire county.

Good post.
The politicians and power people went hard after the commissioner.I believe it did go beyond politics with the personal attacks on the man. Just think about what we ended up with. The power brokers wanted to control government for themselves along with the power and money that goes with it. The commissioner fought against exactly what is going on today.

Germany is horrified that we would choose to go down such a dangerous path after seeing what happened with their country.

Pittsfield blogs – trending topics:

North Street and Garbage Bags

The unique driving experience that has become North Street is mindboggling.
One quick ride down North and it is apparent – neither drivers nor bikers can safely navigate the fuckery created by some arbitrary “improve-the-landscape” grant. It is a MESS.

Speaking of messes, what’s a city dweller gotta pay to get their trash picked up? Apparently, several councilors want them to pay twice. Once in the taxes allocated for trash removal and then again, in an additional charge to pay per bag.

Lengthy public discussions on social media reveal that Councilor Pete White will never listen to the people. It is clear that his vote is for sticking another cost to the taxpayers, because in his mind – no one deserves free trash pick up. His constituents will pay. And they will pay twice.

Ironically his and other supporters argue that a trash overhaul is needed because the cost of trash collection has risen $1million dollars in the past five years.

What they aren’t telling you is that from 2015 to 2020, the budget itself rose from $141,000,000 to $175,000,000.

One million dollars over the course of five years seems pretty minimal in the whole scope of things.

And where does the leftover money from an entire year of shutdowns go? There is no way the budget doesn’t come in very underspent.

Totally agree with your post. Peter White always has some lame excuse for his stupid votes. This is very evident considering the amount of posts, in the hundreds, on his FACEbook against the bike lanes, it shows he does not care or listen to taxpayers wishes. What blows my mind also, is that Nick Russo the genius on the great design of the North Street Bike Lane mess has the audacity to seek election for Morandi’s CC seat. Has to be another “puppet” push by the Tyer administration. The present “puppets” seem to not care that they are voted in by the people, they choose to forget that they are suppose to be working for the people, NOT working for the Mayor. Let the games begin.

Great Barrington, dumb white peoples in search of racism. The only racist attack, was a scam perpetrated by a POC against herself and it wasted $300,000 in taxpayer money and shut down a college. Defund the police that are protecting you as you march.

WILLIAMSTOWN — The Zoom “bomb” that disrupted a classroom and shocked the Mount Greylock Regional School community Jan. 21 was instigated by two students in another school district. According to Superintendent Jason “Jake” McCandless, they were students of color.

Two students of color (black) pranked a school zoom meeting by playing rap songs with the N-word, written and performed by (black) artists, by using another student of color’s account (black). Any it was somehow a racial incident?

“Motive sometimes doesn’t matter,” McCandless said. “What does matter is the victim’s perception of the event. Our first concern is for the victim and the family. In addition, the students and staff, and community were shocked and hurt that day.”

Notice doesn’t matter? Intent doesn’t matter? What a bold thinker McCandless is.

Every serious moral philosophy, every decent legal system and every ethical organization cares deeply about intention.

It is the difference between murder and manslaughter. It is an aggravating or extenuating factor in judicial settings. It is a cardinal consideration in pardons (or at least it was until Donald Trump got in on the act). It’s an elementary aspect of parenting, friendship, courtship and marriage.

A hallmark of injustice is indifference to intention. Most of what is cruel, intolerant, stupid and misjudged in life stems from that indifference. Read accounts about life in repressive societies — I’d recommend Vaclav Havel’s “Power of the Powerless” and Nien Cheng’s “Life and Death in Shanghai” — and what strikes you first is how deeply the regimes care about outward conformity, and how little for personal intention.

I’ve been thinking about these questions in an unexpected connection. Late last week, Donald G. McNeil Jr., a veteran science reporter for The Times, abruptly departed from his job following the revelation that he had uttered a racial slur while on a New York Times trip to Peru for high school students. In the course of a dinner discussion, he was asked by a student whether a 12-year-old should have been suspended by her school for making a video in which she had used a racial slur.

In a written apology to staff, McNeil explained what happened next: “To understand what was in the video, I asked if she had called someone else the slur or whether she was rapping or quoting a book title. In asking the question, I used the slur itself.”

In an initial note to staff, editor-in-chief Dean Baquet noted that, after conducting an investigation, he was satisfied that McNeil had not used the slur maliciously and that it was not a firing offense. In response, more than 150 Times staffers signed a protest letter. A few days later, Baquet and managing editor Joe Kahn reached a different decision.

“We do not tolerate racist language regardless of intent,” they wrote on Friday afternoon. They added to this unambiguous judgment that the paper would “work with urgency to create clearer guidelines and enforcement about conduct in the workplace, including red-line issues on racist language.”

Donald McNeil Jr., the former science reporter who stepped down at the New York Times.
Donald McNeil Jr., the former science reporter who stepped down at the New York Times
C-SPAN
This is not a column about the particulars of McNeil’s case. Nor is it an argument that the racial slur in question doesn’t have a uniquely ugly history and an extraordinary capacity to wound.

This is an argument about three words: “Regardless of intent.” Should intent be the only thing that counts in judgment? Obviously not. Can people do painful, harmful, stupid or objectionable things regardless of intent? Obviously.

Do any of us want to live in a world, or work in a field, where intent is categorically ruled out as a mitigating factor? I hope not.

One more reason why it’s so good that McCandless is out of the Pittsfield School District. Now if only the other far left fanatics would leave.

I agree that “intent” matters. You got it exactly right that “it’s all about outward conformity” in repressive societies and America is becoming a repressive society similar to China if we continue to go down this dark path.

Good post, DW.

As is abundantly clear, it is not about intent or racism or even morals. It’s about optics. Simon’s Rock was a racist incident. It was an attack on white people by a black person trying to claim they were racist. Morally, the DA had an obligation to pursue it. Her wiggle for optics was the defendant could not be prosecuted because she would not cooperate. News flash: Every single defendant has a constitutional right NOT to cooperate. Question: Did Durfee in Dalton cooperate with the investigation?

The President Trump defense team is doing an unbelievably great job of making Democrats look like a bunch of phonies. They played video of all the violence throughout the summer which Democrats were encouraging and Kamala Harris was even bailing out some of the most violent rioters, one of whom went on to commit murder after being bailed out.

President Trump said in his speech on January 6th that if the Democrats had lost this election, there would be violence across the country, but we are not that way. He then said let’s march peacefully to the White House. When he said “fight” in the speech, he was referring to winning primary challenges, but that part was conveniently cut off by the Democrats. The Democrats were planning for even more violence if they lost the presidential election.

According to the Washington Post, only 11 percent of the U.S. population has been vaccinated so far (as of 12-February-2021), and 29.5% of the prioritized population. We are a very long way from reaching herd immunity from COVID-19 through mass vaccinations. We do not even have vaccines for children yet. The infectious disease coronavirus mutates daily and its variants become even more contagious and deadly by the day. What if we someday achieve mass vaccinations, but the coronavirus variants render it useless for herd immunity? We are in the stone ages when it comes to public health. State governments spend over one half of their budgets on public health, while the federal government spends over 34% (and rising), but we are still way behind protecting the public from many illnesses and infectious diseases. We the People are literally spending trillions of tax dollars per year on public health, while our state and federal government if failing to protect us from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kamala Harris should absolutely be impeached. She was bailing out dangerous rioters, one of whom went on to murder somebody by serious head trauma. She was bailing out people who were attacking federal buildings. Can you imagine if President Trump started bailing out the January 6th rioters? Kamala Harris even went so far as to dare anyone to stop the violent rioters. “They should not stop and they will not stop” she said as cities were being burned to the ground and people were being murdered in the streets.

Hello Patrick Fennell,

I respect you and your political views, including your support for former U.S. President Donald Trump. I am a Democrat who supports the ideals of law-abiding, rational conservatives in the Republican Party who believe in Human Rights and the U.S. Constitution. I support the ideas of limited government in the lives of American Citizens and Business. I hate political extremism, Communism and Authoritarianism, Fascism and Big Brother totalitarian government, and demagoguery to incite mob violence.

My views on Donald Trump is that he is a Nazi who had neo Nazis work for his presidential campaigns and administration. Trump’s immigration policies were racist and his programs were inhumane. I believe Trump’s immigration policy of taking infants from their mothers’ arms was a crime against humanity. Trump praised hate groups. Trump said that the neo Nazis who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia “very fine people on both sides”. Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud targeted black voters in swing state cities in Atlanta Georgia, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Detroit Michigan, and Milwaukee Wisconsin. Trump spent over 4 years disparaging black inner cities, and they in return voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris last Fall. What did Trump expect after insulting these people for so long?

My view of Joe Biden is that his political record is corporate-friendly, was racist at various points, and filled with questions about his alleged “crime” family’s unexplained wealth. Hunter Biden is being investigated by federal law enforcement, including for money laundering. Hunter Biden’s personal life is scandalous. Kamala Harris is a political Chameleon who has changed a lot of her political views over the years. Her personal life has scandals, too. Although, I believe she is an improvement from the religious nutcase named Mike Pence.

My view of Beacon Hill is that the Boston state lawmakers only do disservices to the people of Massachusetts. Beacon Hill’s leadership is top-down, undemocratic, secretive, corrupt and greedy. Massachusetts has a lot of severe economic inequality in its regions and communities, and public education system. Beacon Hill lawmakers vote themselves huge legislative pay raises, and last month they received up to 3 legislative pay raises on January 1st, 2021. Over one million Massachusetts workers lost their jobs and health insurance over the past year during the Covid-19 pandemic, but Beacon Hill lawmakers have enriched themselves at the public trough. Retired Beacon Hill lawmakers, such as Dan Bosley, Peter Larkin and Stan Rosenberg, are all registered lobbyists in the Boston Statehouse who shakedown Massachusetts taxpayers for their 6-figure lobbyist salaries on top of their taxpayer-funded state pensions and other public perks. Beacon Hill lawmakers and lobbyists are profiting, while the working class taxpayers are paying for their largesse.

My view of Pittsfield politics is that the lovely Linda Tyer rules by fear, strong-arm tactics and retribution – same old decades-long nasty Pittsfield politics. Matt Kerwood sits on a +$10 million slush fund, while he taxes the hell out of the city’s shrinking tax base. Mayor Linda Tyer and Matt Kerwood have passed the largest municipal budgets in the history of Pittsfield politics. Pittsfield has one of the highest commercial tax rates in Massachusetts. Pittsfield and Berkshire County is one of the most economically unequal regions in the state and nation because there are scarce living wage jobs there for the average working class family. The lovely Linda Tyer lives in a wealthy gated community with her millionaire accountant husband Barry Clairmont near the Hancock border. Inner city Pittsfield is exhibited as “A City in Decay” in large photos by Gregory Crewdson in upscale art galleries and museums in London, NYC, and L.A. The Boston Federal Reserve Bank funded a case study on inner city Pittsfield’s entrenched, intergenerational poverty. PEDA’s so-called business park will turn 23 years old this upcoming Summer of 2021, and it is Exhibit A as a failed brownfields cite that is mostly vacant and polluted with industrial chemicals called PCBs left behind by GE. Pittsfield’s inner city public schools are rated Level 5, which is the worst possible rating by the state. The obvious question one would ask the lovely Linda Tyer is, “What are the taxpayers in Pittsfield paying for other than failed leadership?”

Best wishes,

Jonathan Melle
