THE PLANET’S FEARLESS ELECTION ROUNDUP, PT. 2: CLERK, SCHOOL COMMITTEE

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

Part Two of Two

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, COLUMBUS DAYOCT. 11, 2021) — Today THE PLANET celebrates Columbus Day, not Indigestible People’s Day, an apt time to conclude our Fearless Election Roundup (FER). Our FER will never be politically correct, only correct politically.

On the hot seat:  city clerk and school committee.

CITY CLERK

Generally, THE PLANET hates unopposed races, but with incumbent Michele Benjamin, we have few concerns. Benjamin has proven and effective, reliable clerk, on top of the office and responsive to requests. We especially appreciate welcoming manner and that of her staff, Heather Brazeau, assistant clerk; associate clerks Doreen Jamross and Ashley Gangell; and Sabrina Gogan, licensing board clerk.

What does the clerk’s office do? Not many people know. From the city’s website:

Perhaps more than any other public official, the City Clerk symbolizes the stability and continuity of local government.  The official duties and responsibilities of the City Clerk are established by Massachusetts General Laws and the Code of the City of Pittsfield.  The City Clerk issues licenses and permits,  collects birth, marriage, and death records, serves as recording officer, and is the custodian of valuable municipal records.  As Chief Election Official, the City Clerk supervises elections, voter registration, and conducts the annual city census, and is a member of the Board of Registrars.  The City Clerk provides staff assistance to the City Council including agenda preparation, recording minutes, and archiving petitions, orders, and ordinances.  The City Clerk acts as the hub of government for the general public, all city departments, and numerous federal, state, and local agencies.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

School committee has typically been a Soviet Block election, the six elected members seeking “reelection” with zero challengers or at best, a token candidate. This yearthe situation’s a little better, with nine candidates, five of whom are challengers.

School Committee candidates, moderators during recent debate (Photo: news kudos.com)

THE PLANET needs not employ too many photons detailing the dreadful performance of this committee. Besides hiring a series of “safe” superintendents — afraid of true change, worried more about image and compensation than performance, caving to the latest “progressive” policies — the school committee uncritically raising department salaries, approve top-loaded staffing, creating fake positions such as the “Cain’t Tuch Dis” Cultural Proficiency Coach, and other sins of omission and commission.

For a department that consumes between 70 and 75% of the $179 million city budget ($125-$134 million), you’d think this committee would take its responsibilities seriously. That’s not the case with the current lineup. Consequently, teachers are leaving in droves, kids have taken over the classrooms, violent altercations are the norm, and suicide-risk assessments of students are almost as common as math classes.

Of the nine candidates, four are incumbents: Mark Brazeau, Bill Cameron, Dan Elias, and Alison McGee. Challengers number five: Sara Hathaway, Kate Lauzon, Karen Murray, Vicky Smith, and Bill Tyer. Two current members, Kathy “Lady Boots” Yon and Nyanna “Enos” Slaughter, won’t be coming back, deciding not to press their luck. This guarantees the next committee will improve. Yon as chair did nothing but set back the cause of reform, and Slaughter, the mayor’s replacement after Dennis Powell resigned, proved to be woefully in over her head.

The only incumbent worthy of a vote is Cameron. He’s generally proven to be one of those rare insiders who actually thinks for himself. Brazeau had timed out, Elias seems to running on fumes, and McGee proved her lack of integrity by selling out to the Bike Mafia. With functionaries such as McGee, one sign never fails that she’s bad news: “It’s for The Children.”

THE PLANET notes with great interest Hathaway’s name, and we’re glad to see it. Her mayoral experience coupled with time in the classroom, she makes her the ideal SC candidate — on paper at least. We loved two things about Hathaway as mayor. First, she was a policy wonk. Second, she had Moxie, a cute little saint who would accompany Sara when she did “The Dan Valenti Show” on WBRK.

Lauzon earned her spot by virtue of lots of public-service involvement, especially with Tyler Street. Tyer, as we said on a previous post, has never NOT been involved in efforts to make a difference through involvement in campaigns and volunteer work. Murray and Smith have one great thing going for them. They’re not incumbents. That in itself is worth a vote.

Pittsfield’s “Level 5” School Committee has 6 seats plus Mayor Linda Tyer that takes in many millions of dollars in state administered federal funding, but no one knows where the money actual goes – meaning it’s millions in funding is all really a “Cash Cow” for Pittsfield politics instead of for public education.

What is worse is that everyone – faculty, staff, including former Pittsfield Superintendent Jason “Jake” McCandless who now works in Williamstown, and over 650 students – all choose to bolt from the Pittsfield public school district faster than the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt can run the 100 meter dash. Retired Superintendent Bill Cameron knows all about Pittsfield’s failing public schools, but he always votes for business as usual, which has long been Pittsfield politics’ sarcastic tagline.

Sara Hathaway, along with 5 other women teachers, received an unspecified cash settlement from the Pittsfield public school district’s insurance policy for age discrimination in the Spring of 2015 – or 6.5 years ago when Dan Bianchi was the Mayor. I must give due credit to Sara Hathaway for her rightfully opposing Pittsfield politics’ worst snake oil salesman Jimmy Ruberto since 2001 – or for the past 20 years. Sara Hathaway was right about him long before most people learned the hard way. I wonder how many votes she will receive for School Committee in the November election? I also wonder how she would work with Mayor Linda Tyer, seeing how they are on opposing sides of Pittsfield politics?

The Pittsfield school committee should be disbanded entirely. Their record over the last 30 years is nothing short of abysmal. They have done much more harm than good and should be peer reviewed by a very outside non partisan group from Japan or Hong Kong. Firstly though, a forensic audit of their finances should be undertaken and made public.

The whole school system reeks of cash cow syndrome with educating children a far distant concern. And it is not going to change which is why cognizant parents harboring hope for their children opt out of the system.

Trump has the freedom to lie and those lies are for the small thinkers. He never conceded and that was so un-American….Ignorance is the key to Trumps extreme power. For those that thought America was an educated patriotic exceptional place we find ourself where Germans found themselves facing fear of others and Trump preaches himself as savior and the limited poor uneducated Christians are following him in what they believe is a fight against the devil…..

Dan, I thought the Berkshire Beagle announced several months ago that Allison McGee (along with Kathy Yon) would not be running for re-election to the school committee? Is she really on the ballot, and was that announcement bogus, in order to get rid of the heat she generated by her conflict of interest in pushing the bike park at Springside?

Whatever happened to Parent Teacher Associations across the country instead of these school committees/school boards? PTA’s are being given less and less power across the country and don’t even exist in some places. In Virginia, this PTA had all kinds of tricks played on it to give them less power. PTA members complained that the PTA appears to funnel parents into roles as servants for teachers and administrators, rather than the reverse.

With all that is happening with CRT (Critical Race Theory) across the country and parent involvement in their children’s education being called terrorist activity, it’s no wonder that Progressives want the PTA to be completely disbanded or neutered.

Parents under the Biden administration are now considered a potential terrorizing threat to the school committee’s across the country for wanting input on their children’s current indoctrination curriculum they don’t want for their children. Garland has the FBI on the case. And Garland has a son in law who is making bank off the materials for the CRT curriculums across the country his company provides. I don’t much care for Mitch McConnell , but he definitely helped the country with not letting Garland become a sitting Supreme Court justice for life.

Can you even imagine this guy on the Supreme Court if he would treat parents this way? Best thing that ever happened is keeping him far way from the Supreme Court. Unfortunately we have him as Attorney General and that is bad too. This is what we would see in Nazi Germany where anyone who questioned the Nazi party was a target, but it’s happening here in America. Don’t question what is being taught in these government run schools. People need to wake up to the control that these far left Progressives want over all Americans.

Funny how local progressives calling for this day to be renamed refuse to address the problem of our state seal.
Funny how Helen Moon isn’t demanding that we change the name of Columbus Ave to Indigenous Ave. …yet.
Funny how today is also national coming out day and our progressive DA hasn’t used the power of her office to apologize for the railroading and death of Bernie Baran, and the decades of harm that caused to our local gay community
Progressives can’t cherry-pick if we chop down their cherry tree!

Pittsfield should have a Bernie Baran Day to remind us of the colossal failure of our own local justice system. And though this colossal failure has been largely covered up or buried, it did happen and we should be forever reminded in hopes that local power brokers never again are allowed to run amok.

Oh wait, it is happening as we speak…

Nance Pelosi crowing that they will take items out of the expensive bills so they don’t cost so much, but don’t worry we will still get the transformation of America. Because it’s not just the amount of these bills that is so insane, but what is in them. Americans will get their scraps while fighting for the few remaining items in the stores. Never underestimate Wrong Ways ability to screw things up.
I know of a family in Berkshire County, they have had a complaint into her office about their 13 year old daughter who was “allegedly” raped by a law enforcement officer from Berkshire county.
They turned over hundreds of text messages, he sent pictures of his penis, he sent pictures of himself masturbating, he “allegedly” coerced this girl into sending nude pictures and videos, and eventually met her for sex a number of times.
She’s yet to do a god damn thing.
So when she says she supports victims and those who have been trafficked or coerced for sex, she’s lying. She’s horrible, Andrea Harrington re-victimizes victims because she just doesn’t care.

I guarantee if there was a complaint to the police in the town where this happened, it would be properly investigated and the department of children and families would have to be notified by law. These cases take lots of time and often are not what they appear. And if the alleged perpetrators was a cop, it would get extra attention to assure a thorough investigation. Harrington has absolutely nothing to do with it, unless and until police file charges. Incompetence may reign supreme in her office, or not, but the cops will properly investigate.

It was brought to the investigative unit in her office. It’s been two years. The evidence was PERFECTLY clear.
If it takes her office now almost three years to seek an indictment on a sexual predator, she’s doing it wrong.
A family member was told from one of the investigating officers that they delay is with the DA and them not getting the direction and instruction they need.
This guy groomed this girl from 11 years old. I’m sure he’s doing it to or has done it to other girls. Harrington is just making more victims while she goes on trips and tries to figure out her own legal problems.

The police do not need the DAs permission to make an arrest or file charges. Period. She can certainly have them dropped but they don’t legally need her blessing, thank God. Not even the state police.

I mean the police in her DA’s office. Her investigators are handling this and unless she gives the OK, nothing happens. Her budget, her investigation. Seems like you just love sticking up for her.

According to the Andrea Harrington School of Law, all members of the Charles Manson family are not responsible for murder, except for Charlie himself. The “Studies are clear.” Just like the evidence shows injection sites work. The only thing clear is Harrington is 100% full of BS.
“The studies are clear that most young adults will grow out of criminal behavior by their mid-twenties and the vast majority of these crimes are low-level offenses,” Harrington said. “The decision-making part of a child’s brain is not fully developed until the age of 25. With appropriate interventions instead of aggressive prosecution, we, as a community, can help make the next generation safer and healthier.”

Not better than nothing. We would literally be better off with no DA given the damage she has caused. Anyone can beat her.

What is the age of a gang member you ask? That would be 17-18. Thanks to DA Andrea Harrington those “kids” shooting up and shooting around Pittsfield will go to juvenile court and be treated with kid gloves. What would you do if you ran a drug operation? Move to Pittsfield! It’s open season for drug dealing and crime here. Did you know you voted for that?

NO.
The real reason Pittsfield became a drug trafficking hotspot goes back to when Hillcrest had a contract with New York State to take their overflow drug users and sellers and rehabilitate ’em out here in the sticks.
This coincided with the DUI law in Mass. that said if you got three DUIs, you automatically go to jail.
The rehabilitated folks from New York finish the program here, and happen to notice that accessing the social safety net here, as compared to New York where one will stand in line for hours and hours if not days, here it’s like “I Dream of Jeannie”: cross your arms and blink, there’s your food stamps! Cross your arms and blink, there’s some cash twice a month!
Same rehabilitated folks just spent 28 days in treatment with locals, and had likely heard something like: “I’d love to keep partying but I have these two DUIs. If only there were a substance that would be delivered to the house on demand so I’m not driving around drunk all the time”.
It was a perfect storm of legislation and contracts, and people with some hardcore contacts in the big city, and Pittsfield was the unintended consequence.
Now just for fun, go back and look at when Sarah Hathaway was mayor and decided to start shutting off street lights to save the city money. How many of the street lights shut off were real close to a some of the popular watering holes, thereby theoretically increasing the risk of drunk or buzzed driving accidents and catching charges?
So this one little municipal cost-saving measure ADDED to the local demand for something that would let people keep partying but not put them behind the wheel after drinking.
Really, just a shit ton of unintended consequences is what got us to where we are today in terms of the prevalence of the drug trade here.

That is part of the story but there is a lot more that caused this city to become a drug/gang hotbed. It’s not as simple as what you have stated.

No it is definitely not that simple. There are many pieces to the story.
We were, and are, economically vulnerable.
Then our fearless? Peeerless? Yeah, let’s go with peerless, leadership DOUBLES DOWN on crime by building an expensive new jail and while that *does* relieve economic distress for the few, the brave, the hand-picked grads of SJHS, what our peerless leaders neglect to inform the Kapanskis is that in order to maintain, due to mandatory minimums meaning we can’t keep recycling the same guys through there for 6 to 9 months every couple of years, we’re gonna need more criminals.
What to do, what to do?
Welp.
As usual Pittsfield is a little late to the prison building boom party, and while top LE across the country is now speaking out against mandatory minimums, we have the Capeless Crusader who, whether he agrees with them or not, has literally painted himself into the corner with the construction of this new prison here, and basically tells us to get rid of mandatory minimums ,we will have to pry them from his cold dead hands.
And the Berkshire county voters go, “Hold my beer.”
And here we are.
And we are still praying for sheetrock but it does feel like we’re praying for it a lot less frequently now.

Baker is an idiot. Still issuing executive orders despite fact that covid emergency is over. His vaccine mandates are causing staffing shortages, and now he wants school kids covid tested even though kids are the least vulnerable to the virus.

Let’s get rid of this RINO – Geoff Diehl for Guv!

Maybe WAMC’s Josh Landes could act like a real journalist for 30 seconds and call some victim’s family members and a few constiuents? Nah, just record what the DA says and put it on the air. What a complete hack.
