BOWLER AGREES TO DEBATES, WHILE PING PONG WITH ALF CONTINUES IN RACE FOR SHERIFF

Second of Two Parts

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, THE WEEKEND EDITION JUNE 24-6, 2022) — When he announced for sheriff, Alf Barbalunga said he would meet incumbent Tom “Pudge” Bowler in debate anytime, anywhere. Bowler’s campaign got back to us and accepted that challenge. That being settled and taking the candidates at their word — always risky business, politics being what it is with the incessant need to win at all costs — THE PLANET is exploring setting up some debates. We’ll keep you posted.

Both candidates seem busy for this time of the year, when campaigns, particularly incumbencies, often assume that in the Berkshire summer, few pay attention to politics. That’s an open question, but if we were managing a campaign, we would take nothing for granted and campaign relentlessly, as if it’s the last week before Election Day. Of course, we’re not managing a campaign, despite what rumors may claim. Bowler’s people think we’ve endorsed Alf, whose team thinks we’ve gone for Pudge. Neither is true. It just means we’re doing our job of prickling with “equity.” You’ve heard the word before.

Barbalunga’s campaign manager, Brandon Mauer, told THE PLANET that the campaign has had “an overwhelming response to our platform” He said “the entire incarcerated female population of Berkshire County being shipped to Chicopee in 2014 seems to have struck a chord within the community from a humanitarian, legal, and fiscal standpoint.  It was rewarding to receive this robust community affirmation.  Additionally, when Tom Bowler and his leadership team surprisingly responded to our candidacy press conference, there was no mention of this topic.  We believe that makes a statement in itself.”

Mauer “current sheriff staff and members of the public” have expressed two areas of concern:

  • terminating current employees and
  • promising job positions to replace those employees.

“If the voter’s honor us with an election victory,” Maurer said, “we pledge not one individual on Bowler’s leadership team will be targeted with employment separation.  Not one.  That has never been Alf’s style; starting in January of 2023, we will provide a nine-month window to analyze all leadership positions, including need, current performance, and anticipated performance, and, only then, modify leadership dynamics if/when needed.” Mauer attributed the allegation to “frivolous rumors … we have unfortunately been experiencing. We again pledge and reiterate that we subscribe to the policy of not committing personal petty attacks on the campaign trail.”

Is this typical campaign talk. Note that it allows a gigantic loophole beginning nine months after taking office, should Alf win. Current leadership team, be on high alert.

Sheriff Bowler addressed the question raised on THE PLANET by readers about the power of the sheriff’s office’s when it comes to actual police work:  “The sheriff’s office continues to be a resource to all of Berkshire County and its public safety needs. Sheriff deputies are assigned to the Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force, the FBI Western Mass. Division, the Underwater Search and Rescue Team, the Berkshire Special Response Team and more. The sheriff office’s command center is available and responds to all major crimes in the county. We remain fully committed to supporting all law enforcement needs in the Berkshires.”

Pudge added, “Two officers from the jail are assigned full time to the Berkshire County Drug Task Force; one officer is assigned full time to the FBI Task Force. Our command center responds to every major crime in the county to assist and support law enforcement and public safety, including fire services and emergency management. I believe that law enforcement in Berkshire County will say that the sheriff’s office is an indispensable part of their operations for any serious incident.”

Regarding the AP poll cited by Barbalunga saying that hardly anyone knew who the Berkshire County sheriff was: “I believe the article stated that something like 978 people statewide were asked if they knew their sheriff. There are 6.8 million people living in Massachusetts. Doesn’t sound to me like a very good poll.”
Barbalunga also said Bowler simply “warehoused” inmates at the jail.  Bowler refuted that claim: “In light of all of the excellent and comprehensive programs and services provided, [the allegation] is just grossly wrong and such a disservice to the men and women working at the jail who are committed to making a difference. Alf needs to acquaint himself with what actually takes place at the jail and what we stand for.”

The Sheriff sits in his no show plum sinecure made for a politically connected Democrat to cash in on his $200,000 public pay plus perks per year. Alf Barbalunga already makes 6-figures as a Chief Probation Officer. If Alf wins the 2022 Sheriff election, he will get a public pay plus perks raise, but if he loses to Sheriff Tom Bowler, Alf will go back to his 6-figure post in the court system. Either way, Alf wins. If Sheriff Tom Bowler wins a 3rd six-year term, he gets to go back to his no show plum sinecure, but if Bowler loses, he gets to cash in on his 6-figure public pension plus perks that rivals an adult winning the state lottery jackpot. Either way, Bowler wins. This year’s Sheriff primary election is really about two politically connected 6-figure public pay plus perks Pittsfield politicians wanting more money and power for themselves. The Pittsfield jail is a warehouse of hundreds of Pittsfield’s over 1,000 gang members plus the Berkshires’ troubled mentally ill substance abusers and the like. Give me a break about all of Alf and Tom’s respective campaign propaganda and criticisms of each other. If I still lived in my native hometown, I would vote for Alf, along with D.A. Andrea Harrington, who I call the A Team.

On another subject, Peter Marchetti is giving voters information on how they can recall and oust Ward 2 City Councilor Charles Ivar Kronick. Peter Marchetti, who is a homosexual man, is offended by Kronick’s public remarks about the homosexual and trans people. Kronick said he is focused on Mayor Linda Tyer’s always predictable 5% budget and spending increase without concern for the looming recession in 2023. Mayor Linda Tyer called Councilors Kronick and Tony Maffuccio’s objection to her budget “Reckless”. She did not address Kronick and Maffuccio’s concerns that people, families, small businesses, tax and fee payers, and so on, are unable to afford her $200 million fiscal year 2023 municipal budget. Why would she? After all, she is the first Mayor of Pittsfield who lives in a mansion in the city’s only Gated Community with her multimillionaire CPA third husband Barry Clairmont where the first couple park their Lexus luxury cars at night within a few feet of the Hancock border. In closing, Mayor Linda Tyer should be the Mayor of Beverly Hills, California instead of the distressed and economically unequal City of Pittsfield, Massachusetts!

I’m not fazed. I ran against him last November and won by a landslide, am prepared to do so again.

I find it curious however that Marchetti has more important things to do than figure out how to shave fat off the City Budget and help fixed income folk retain their homes they have lived in for 30+ years.

Interesting about the recall. Didn’t know it was so easy. I can think of 4 easy choices to add to the list.

Marchetti is coming across as a bitter pathetic tool of the mayor. He needs to let go of the apron strings and grow the hell up. No longer expecting anything from him to help his constituents as he checked out on that long ago. But he really needs to take a good long look in the mirror and decide if that is the person he wants to be. Not a good look.
Did I also read in the paper that he and the mayor are going to rework the city charter so that people have even less say in what goes on in their city?

Poor PeePee Petie said he had to clear his mind from a tense CC meeting. Give me a friggin break!! He has proven over and over that he can’t handle being the President of the CC. If an issue does not go his way his anger boils over and he throws a hissy fit. So he is promoting a recall on Kronick just because someone finally crossed PeePee Petie’s Flat Tyer whipped butt. Is he going to call for a recall on Maffuccio too? Maybe there should be a recall to oust him as President of the CC, then he won’t be so tense. If he can’t handle this then he most certainly should not run for Mayor!

That would be awesome. He is the Andrea Harrington of city councils. Not doing the job the people thought they were electing him to do. Of course, once he is sent packing the stacked council will appoint some other jackass who will also be the right hand of the mayor.
Dan, I wonder if Marchetti would sit down for an interview with you to discuss what he sees his elected role for Pittsfield and if believes he is honoring his oath of office.

The fact that the Eagle ran a puff piece, basically calling you a racist, homophobe, tells everyone what they need to know. You saved the taxpayers money and stiffed the special interests of the Barry Tyer cabal.

It’s the WHEN (women helping endanger neighborhoods) progressive playbook “go to.” If you disagree with them, just label the opposer a “racist, homophobe, etc,” without giving facts to back it up.

Here are a couple of questions you may also ask Linda “Flat” Tyer, on behalf of us:

*how did a city employee (school department) get over $1,000,000 in ARPA gifts? That city employee being Shirley Edgerton. It seems a tad excessive, unless of course 5-10% cones back as a “Christmas gift,” to the mayor?

*what does the office of division, inequity, and exclusion (DIE) do differently than the city’s personnel department?

*has the city being sued federally based on any racially discriminatory hiring policies to necessitate a duplication of these services? If so, please provide the federal case number. I’d like to verify it.

Sheriff Bowler has run an operation that has been above reproach for over a decade. I’ve heard him call inmates “my guys.” They are extremely well taken care of while you sit around pussy lobbing tomatoes and collecting foodstamps from another state.

Something to consider is, women at BCHC were under maximum security because they were a mixed pod. Housing sentenced & pre-sentenced is a violation in & of. Chicopee has movement because it’s not a men’s institution. During a fire, for examp, women & men are prohibited from any contact including eye contact- it doesn’t work & bring em back, that’s just a way to keep the w horses under a thumb. Best security is when no one else knows what’s happening to the women, bc it ain’t good. Trafficking in humans is a complicated thing – we don’t even like lettuce but a good cuke, or heirloom would be good. There are no vegetables in jail, who told you that. It’s mind numbing boredom the best thing you can do there is die.

Does anybody think it’s strange that we’re only weeks away from an election and the District Attorney race is quiet as a mouse? Lots of activity for the Sheriff election, but nothing for the District Attorney election. It’s frighteningly like the last District Attorney race where campaigning was at a minimum from Harrington’s opposition and she easily won.

If you are a District Attorney with a whole lot of negative baggage it is probably better not to draw attention to yourself any more than you have to. Every time she pops her head up she reminds people that she is one of the people adding to their problems. Like OZ she is better off hiding behind the curtain until the last minute. Plus, is her heart really in it anymore? Would she not rather slide sideways if someone would just open a door for her?

Harrington is good at waiting until the last minute. For example, now, after years of being out for nobody but herself, she’s started acting like a DA and holding people on bail. Next she will wait until the last minute and accuse her opponent of hiding something massive like non-existent rape cases at Williams College. She’ll use words like racial injustice and mass incarceration even though there is no evidence of arresting people based on race or overcrowding in the jail in Berkshire County. No evidence! Imagine a DA that ran and actually won based on no evidence! You really can’t make it up. Harrington is nothing but a pretender and a poser. Last time people ate it up like a cult but now the word on the street is people are so sick of Harrington they will vote for ABA.

Dan, I posted this yesterday, I believe her “ace card” is criminally charging PPD Officer Nicholas Sondrini, with murder/manslaughter, for shooting Miggy.

Will it be wrong, not to mention a guaranteed not guilty verdict? Yes, it sure will. I don’t think DA Wrong Way will care either way.

It’ll stir up all the race baiting police haters and white guilt liberal loons, towards her candidacy.

If she wins the election against Shugrue, she kept her job. She won’t care if it ruined Sondrini’s life. Andrea is out for Andrea.

If she loses, it’ll be blamed on “evil white men,” who didn’t like change a “woman brought to the DA’s Office.” A tailor made excuse already built in.

Just my opinion. She has already proven nothing is off limits.

In discussions with a few in the neighborhood about our current state of how law enforcement is going here in the Berkshires related to crime.Some have indicated that they voted for Harrington feeling some changes would be positive as a whole. But some feel because she seems to be staying the same course that isn’t working they will be voting differently. The Miggy episode came up and most feel bad about what transpired, but will still be voting different because of the overall picture of the amount of crimes and criminal’s that have exploded with little or no consequences. I myself feel the Miggy incident alone won’t have the desired effect that Harrington and the rest are hoping for. I bet many out there in the Berkshires feel the same about it.

No articles in the local papers about the race since May. No mention of any debates between the two. It’s like some people don’t want anyone to know there is actually an election coming up to keep voting numbers low which helps the incumbent.

Harrington had time to put out a long statement on Roe v Wade even though there is no impact in Massachusetts but she, the Berkshire DA, is pledging to not prosecute people. It got 4 likes from the Fair and Just propagandists. That is what Andrea Harrington is doing with her time. Then again, It’s probably best for victims and criminals alike.

I don’t see any way for the blue brigade to defend Harrington when she has broken every campaign promise. The overuse of holding people as dangerous and failure to prosecute Laquann Johnson resulting in a second murder was just the end for her having any leg to stand on.

Ironically those southern Baptists who claim to be so pro choice get more abortions than any other section of the population. Not gonna let their high society community find out their little princess got knock up.
There will still just as many abortions. They will just be more discreet about it. But it is odd that the religious right wants all these unwanted babies to come into an already cruel world. Just look around at all the street urchins who do have parents. “Parents” who spend ten minutes a day with the kid and don’t care where they are the rest of the time. You see them EVERYWHERE.

Actually if Massachusettes still does abortions Pittsfield could become an even bigger gold mine than it already is for the power brokers. There is still enough room on the PEDA site for a 500 bed abortion clinic and you can bet your Fallopian tubes that they will be pouring in from Texas, Oklahoma and all the other faux Christian save the baby states. Other states are already doing this. Can you just imagine the traffic at the airport, Hotel on NOrth, and the local eateries? And, and, the mayor could impose an abortion tax. It may be lower this weekend as according to the paper the mayor is thinking of maybe, possibly addressing violence in Pittsfield. Not sure why it has not occurred to her previously but I do know that most of the gangs in Pittsfield don’t want to make her mad or anything. Sadly, this is what young people are being taught, that life has no meaning. So what if other countries allow unlimited abortions, I’m sure they don’t allow murder after the baby is disconnected from the mother or late term abortions where the baby is fully formed, and if they do, I worry for their lack of humanity. Have you seen or read about all the homeless, uneducated wandering souls living on the streets, eating out of garbage cans, selling their bodies for drugs and stealing everything they can get their hands on just to stay alive? I would submit to you that many of these people were neglected, unwanted babies at one point and are now living in misery almost every day of their lives. And despite the billions of dollars spent every day to feed and house and otherwise help them, they still multiply beyond society’s ability to take care of them. Banning abortion is going to make this problem much worse.

Wildlife populations manage themselves. And it is for the benenfit of the species that the stronger survive and the weak are culled out, either through starvation or disease. And the population numbers rise and fall depending on the availability of food or their ability to survive a disease. So the ones who are left are the healthy and strong and can contribute to the well being of all.
Some human society’s feel the need to keep every warm body alive as long as possible no matter how sick or miserable that person may be. We keep thousands of people alive in nursing homes, some who have been bed ridden for years and others who don’t even know who they are. And then there are the millions who roam the streets,, homeless, always scraping for their next meal and someone to give a shit about them.
I am a big Kervorkian fan. Right to die. If you are aging out and life has little to offer you and you have become a burden to your family you should be able to make the decision to pull your own plug and go the the great beyond. We are all going to die and I don’t know why our last years have to be in misery. As for unwanted babies, very few of whom will be adopted into good homes and live happy productive lives, they should not be forced to come into a world where their lives will involve mostly sadness and despair. If their were an credible agency that would take in all these non aborted unwanted babies and promise to nurture, educate and guide them to adulthood I would feel different. But there is not. Sadly, their lot in life will be quite the opposite.

Oh God. Anyone who thinks this woman is going to be any help with violence in her city has not been paying attention. It has actually increased 20 fold since she took office. This is the same woman who has let her roads fall apart, garbage to accumulate on her streets and totally failed to make her city user friendly to the common man.

By the way, I saw a city dump truck loaded with tree branch pruning s coming out of the Country Club of Pittsfield on south street the other day. Are taxpayers now paying for upkeep at a privately owned golf course whose members include many of the mayors friends? They did try to use taxpayer money to upgrade their chimneys a couple of years ago but apparently someone decided that was a bridge too far.

But keep the Kevlar on because outside of moving to the outskirts of the city like she did will guarantee your safety in Pittsfield.

I’m sure this is in response to DA Wrong Way’s Office allowing a violent, multiple felon, like David Moody, to plead out to 3.5 years in jail for an illegal gun charge.

Moody was a 2-striker and faced a minimum-mandatory sentence of 15 years in prison. Instead, he got 20% of that.

Moody (black male) 3.5 years in prison for illegal firearms possession.

Lonnie Durfee (white male) 2 years in jail for burning haybales that supported Xiden/Harris.

I think we all know why the two injustices above occurred. Instead of “racially biased policing,” as DA Wrong Way has accused every man and woman who wear a badge in Berkshire County of doing, I do KNOW that this is “racially biased prosecuting.”

Why is she spending taxpayer money to hire an outside prosecutor when her first assistant Bell is a competent murder prosecutor? At $150,000 a year, Bell has not tried one case since being hired by Harrington. Bell and Dohoney gave themselves $10,000 raises within the last year. For what? Dohoney is supposed to be in charge of the district court ADAs yet he is rarely in court to supervise them. They are untrained. Most cases are dismissed or bargained down to nothing.

I think the media folk might have told her they can hide the reality for her any longer. People were telling the media they wanted to leave Pittsfield. Once the media was forced to say something the mayor kinda sorta had to come out from under her bed and say something. But talk is cheap as she has shown us. It will get worse not better. And she will not be moving to the center of the city as a show of support.

APMRF – (apmurf). Was a long night recon and insurgent activities directed at a bad art installation in Stockbridge. A milk run for two new recruits but they are like herding cats the entire time. Due to improper acts from one of them, I got a detonator cap stuck on my boot and had to leave it behind and abandon operation

  1. I’m selling all my stocks, but there are few places one can run for cover. Really, no matter what you say, you will agree with me if you think about it. We have a president and vice-president of the United States who are in way over their heads. I’ve seen it before. I was president of the fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon at Colgate University. My successors were great guys who subsequently drove the fraternity into the ground because things were changing and they didn’t see the intent of the changes. Done deal now.
  2. Not much different than what we now are experiencing in our city government. We have two councilors on certain issues who disagree with the majority of other councilors and our entire city government gets bent out of shape. Does anyone understand this is how our political system works. Politics and discussion of issues are what democracy is all about? Good for Mr. Kronick and Mr. Maffucio! If other councilors are unable to discuss issues and defend their point of view, what in hell are you doing there? This is what democracy is all about. If some don’t understand this what in hell are you doing there?

I wouldn’t support Pittsfield politics’ $200 million budget either, Chuck. Level 5 public schools, gangs shooting up the dangerous inner-city streets, one political party provincial hacks who live in Gated Communities, dozens of empty storefronts, no regard for the Senior Citizens who invested in their homes and the city for over 30 years. Pittsfield politics charges top dollar for rock bottom public services!

We are a level 5 system in the number 1 state for education in the country.School choice sent the richest and wealthy to neighbor towns where suburban white well to do elites go.Urban schools are still great but are judged on a elite standard.I can assure you that Lenox is producing honor rolls students that are just handed an A unlike our urban system that deals with a multitude of learning disabled.A student with a earned C plus in Pittsfield is more educated than many Lenox honor roll snowflakes

One of the officials named in the Globe’s report on patronage in the Probation Department was Alfred E. “Alf” Barbalunga, South Berkshire District Court’s chief probation officer.

The Globe said Barbalunga’s father, the retired judge Alfred A. Barbalunga, is friendly with O’Brien, and that the younger Barbalunga went unscathed after a 1999 investigation for poor job performance as a probation officer in North Adams, which included complaints he wasn’t always showing up for work. A judge recommended Barbalunga be fired and another pushed for a reprimand, but in the end he received no discipline. – Berkshire Eagle

If his name wasn’t Barbalunga he’d be tending bar, not running for sheriff. Those is the court system are still bewildered by how he went from nearly being fired as a probation officer in North Adams to being made the chief probation officer in Great Barrington.
The prince of Pittsfield actually thinks he earned all he’s accomplished but he’s a big stupid kid, always has been. His father Judge Barbalunga got him all of the jobs he’s ever had. Period.

District Attorney Harrington will do anything to not have to try a case, especially those involving guns and drugs, because she and her staff are not capable of winning. Losses look bad for the campaign. Therefore, push them out or plead them out. Instead she is putting out press releases on obtaining indictments (ham sandwich, anyone?) and PSAs on fentanyl in the drug supply that she invited here with her policies. Andrea Harrington has destroyed the single most important defense Berkshire County residents had against violent criminals. Even Mayor Linda Tyer can see it now.

I think the one thing Flat Tyer should do to combat DA Wrong Way’s soft on crime approach towards people of color, is to get the Eagle to start printing the booking photos of each of these drug dealers and Illegal weapons possessors. This way, we as the public, can look out for these vibrant and dynamic people and be safe.

I know it goes against the progressive political playbook telling everyone that white supremacy is the cause of all this gun violence.

Unfortunately, facts bear another story. One that $1,000,000 in ARPA money could be addressing the POC on POC violence in Pittsfield. Isn’t Shirley a “cultural competency coach” after all? Whatever the he!! that is?

Alf criticized Bowler for leaving in 2003 because he couldn’t stand The pedi file in charge. And then he came back to change things! That’s what leaders do they make change!
