(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, WEDNESDAY SEPT. 14, 2022) — Now that all is momentarily calm, THE PLANET extends hearty congrats to Tom Bowler for his landslide win in the Democrats’ race for sheriff.
If only his campaign manager and a tiny number of others could do the same. They didn’t, and in not doing so turned a rout into a kind of loss.
Pudge Bowler’s campaign manager would have been wise to read Alexis De Tocqueville’s advice on managing expectations in a campaign. The great political scientist’s book Democracy in America remains the definitive illumination of the American political experiment in freedom and liberty, conceived in political oppression, hatched in revolution, and grown at a time when intelligence was valued and civics were as important as Beyonce is today.
Tocqueville said theeee most important moment for any campaign comes when it is on the verge of success. That’s when emotions rise to the surface and discipline frays. Leaders have to keep tight reign over their disciples at such time, when the pent-up emotions kept in check during the campaign tend to spill.
Most of the sheriff’s supporters were ordinary people. They were grateful for the win they expected.
THE PLANET speaks of a teensy number of Bowlerites. Their slogan: “The Few. The Dowdy. The Craven (FDC).

Mattoon, the sheriff”s campaign manager and sister, soiled and spoiled her brother’s victory, complaining how Team Alf dared to act as if it were in a political campaign. Guess she wanted them to act as cheerleaders for her brother. Mattoon then publicly tore into THE PLANET. Comes with the turf!
The most important public demeanor immediately after securing victory is gratitude and humility. Celebrate? By all means. Party hard, Yes. Pudge fully deserves those spoils. Blast the opposition and bitch about past press coverage? If you have half a brain, no way. If you must engage in such steam, do it in private, not on social media or by crying on the area’s most popular blog. Show a little class.
Apparently, however, Mattoon ripped those key pages out of her Campaign Management for Dummies book.
Contrast that with the way Alf handled a beating. He called to congratulate the sheriff. Pudge didn’t take the call. Moreover, Barbalunga took full responsibility for the loss. He didn’t throw staffers or supporters under the bus. Class act, he and campaign manager Brandon Mauer.

At the beginning of the race, officially June 2 when Bowler announced his re-election bid, the wise guys thought it would be the shoe-in it turned out to be. Donna reigned supreme in her smugness. Then on June 15, Alf Barbalunga took the podium on the deck behind Zucchini’s Restaurant. Team Alf came out blazing, emptying both barrels. Some of the flack drifted harmlessly away in the air. Some, however, punctured the airship, including a focus in the sheriff’s budget. That’s when Donna got cranky and emotional.
Barbalunga put the spotlight on the following facts:
- During the sheriff’s dozen years in office, jail population dropped from nearly 400 to about 155.
- During that same time, Bowlers budget increased between almost $5 million.
- The administrative staff expanded, new slots with six-figure salaries manned by cronies.
Barbalunga dared to document undeniable executive and managerial bloat. It takes big brass to do that in fear-based “Pittsfieldian” politics.

Most all objective observers knew near the end Barbalunga would be crushed. The question was by how much. Well, it was a lot: 77% to 23%. Not a landslide but a Wipe Out (cue drum solo).
Unbelievably, some of Bowler’s True Believers, led by Sister Donna, acted as if they had lost.
There’s dumb then there’s the Box ‘O Rocks.
As she initially proved by bailing out on Mayor Bianchi, Mattoon showed once more she can’t handle the heat.

Donna Mattoon is Tom Bowler’s sister. What do you think she was going to write? Alf Barbalunga ran a negative campaign against her brother. It backfired badly, but Donna Mattoon still called it for what it was. I rooted for Alf – as well as for Andrea Harrington: the A-Team, but at the end of the day on September 6th, 2022, Tom Bowler and Tim Shugrue won. My dad was a Berkshire County Commissioner from 1997 to mid-2000, and I have long written about the abuse my father (and I) endured over many years, even after my family relocated to Amherst, NH 18 to 19 years ago. In over a generation’s time, nothing has changed in Pittsfield politics and beyond when it comes to vindictive behavior and political retribution. I give credit to Donna Mattoon for standing up to the political bullies.
Jonathan you don’t have to tell us who you rooted for, I signed Andrea’s nomination papers but voted for Shagrue. I seem to remember singing your nomination papers when you ran for State Senate. I ran into a lot of people that were for Alf but they all told me they we’re going to vote in the primary. Keep us informed though who your rooting for it helps us decide who to vote for.

I dropped out of the 2004 campaign against Luciforo for Berkshire-based State Senator and then I moved to Amherst, NH that same year after my family relocated there a little over one-half year earlier. I remember you fondly when you served with my dad on the Berkshire County Commission; you were the top vote getter in the 1996 election. I cannot say the same for Smitty Pignatelli, who is a corrupt career politician in Boston for nearly 20 years and counting. Smitty blocks all of my political emails. He only wants people to tell him that he is wonderful. I wish that politicians would listen to the people they represent and beyond, but the reality is that they are only about power and the Almighty Dollar instead of democracy to invest in the people and communities they represent in government. Lastly, I cannot believe the phony op-eds that Smitty writes in Western Massachusetts newspapers, but it makes for good material for me to write and blog about his real state legislative public record.
No one bullied Mattoon or Bowler; Alf was critical of Bowler’s record cause after 12 years it had issues. Remember, he was a never promoted Detective when he won office, he might have been a good guy and good cop, but he had no experience that prepared him to deal with a big budget, the educational challenges, female inmate issues, rising drug addictions and pressures from friends who wanted jobs and better pensions. In the end, I think he had a couple escapes, and some discrimination lawsuits as well. So, even if it’s more the fault of his admin team, as a leader he scores a C- for his first 12 years. He doesn’t deserve a trophy from Barbalunga, or a pass from Dan, and if Mattoon was a good citizen she would have graciously accepted winning another 6 year term for her bro when the public deserved to have these issues she ignored discussed.
Shugrue, Bowler and Alfi all had campaigns run by amateurs. Squeaky had some hot shot from Boston. Shugrue and Bowler prevailed not because of the campaign managers but because of Harrington and Barbalunga’s health problems. ( they made voters sick….. thanks Chuck V) if this proves anything even Jon Melle could have managed Tim and Tom and they would have won.

Also, the CEO of the City, the Mayor, said that she cannot say how much money remains of ARPA. She implies strongly she doesn’t know. It was the most astonishing thing any Mayor could possibly utter to a governing body. She should know the number when she arises in the morning, walks upon the way, and turns the lights off at night.
I suspect that the reason the fund does not go to the Water Sewer is that contractors won’t touch our ARPA accounts. They see a Federal clawback looming and the contractors will want no part of it.

I do agree with you Chaz, she should be able to give a ballpark amount at any time asked. I don’t believe that for a second. As far as you thought of the feds eventually looking for back taxes for the ARPA gift recipients, I can only hope so.

$1,200,000 in ARPA gifts, is a whole lot of back taxes, expense reports, and financial records, to show where the money went. Not to mention a trip to Africa too. That “GoFundMe” campaign that the ROPES program started, better show well in excess of $20,000 from donors to explain that trip.

The risk of federal clawback is real if you are a Ludlow firm doing business across the Commonwealth. They would do their research and determine that Pittsfield ARPA are a risk. Jut read the city’s reporting on how they are distributed.
A contractor want to factor a potential $50,000-$100,000 labor, legal, accounting liability to satisfy an IRS audit plus a vindictive lawsuit from Pittsfield filed in the event of a federal complaint..
The cost is ours to pay: ARPA becomes hard to spend on legitimate projects.

To clue in on your last sentence of “legitimate projects,” would it be safe to assume that $700,000 to Second Chances on Second Street (a BCHC run program/should be state funded), $700,000 to the Berkshire Black Economic Council (a non-business entity with major conflict of interest violations), $500,000 to ROPES (run by a PPS city employee-conflict of interest violation, second large financial ARPA gift awarded to the same person), and $500,000 to Berkshire Museum (conflict of interest, where are the millions $$$ made from art work sales),would not fit into the category of “legitimate projects?”

In time, the dollars shall have to be reported and counted by the Fed. And that requires a document trail. Pie charts won’t cut it.

Please ask for a paper trail now, monthly reports, where the money goes, to whom, at what salary, for what product, etc.

Is it any surprise that this nut is a Pittsfield Public School substitute teacher and was elected to the Pittsfield School Committee. But in answer to her question on what happened in the lives of these filthy bums, I’ve been accosted more than once as I was leaving Berkshire Bank on McKay Street by some of these filthy bums, asking me for money. When I reported this to the bank, I was told that there’s not much they can do about this. One of these filthy bums, a now 20-year-old, gave me a short synopsis on his tragic life, which included being in foster care from the age of 3, and homeless since aging out of foster care at age 18, as he followed me to my vehicle, and aggressively insisted that I give him money. This has happened in the parking lot at CVS also. If Vicki Smith is so concerned about the lives of these filthy houseless bums, Vicki Smith should take them home with her, let them flop in her home, bathe in her bathtub, shit in her toilet, eat in her kitchen, sleep in her bed.

Also, exactly how much taxpayer money was spent to rehab 21 Elenore Road so the city can sell it for considerably much less than was spent to rehab it? Thus, making the neighborhood affordable to someone who can’t afford it. You, know, that sort of people.
The city spent well over $300,000 to rehab a single property on Circular Ave. only to sell it off for somewhere in the $80,000 range. As if that made any sense.
I believe it was one of 4 properties, including a slum on Cherry St., the city of Pittsfield was sinking well over $1 MILLION $$$$$$$$$$$$$ dollars into.
And let us make clear that there were no contractors charging above normal rates for labor or materials for these “improvements”. And there was no abnormal processes going on to choose the contractors and I want to be ever so clear about that. There is/was zero oversight that found any such goings on partly because there is no oversight in Pittsfield but also because if there was you would never hear about it.

It’s the Constitutional right of the people, to assemble and protest a crooked Selection, which it was and they did. POTUS Trump did not plan nor incite storming the Capitol building. The entire speech by the President went without violence, inciting the crowd, or incident.
The crowd was incited, by elements known to and likely employed by nefarious portions of our own government (i.e. Ray Epps, the unidentified man on the tower with bullhorn) , to incite the crowd. Same plants removed barriers around the Capitol (acting under previous direction by bullhorn man), and someone opened the magnetically locked Capitol doors from the inside. These bad actors have not been arrested, questioned in public, nor locked up without due process in the DC Gulag like hundreds of others.
The government refuses to release hundreds of hours of videotape from throughout the area and inside the Capitol. What are they hiding? There are many citizen videotapes which do not support the governments contentions and narratives.
Many people who did simply walk past the removed barriers were maliciously prosecuted, er persecuted with excessive charges, which should at most have been misdemeanors. These people were faced with years of jail time unless they pled down and accepted short sentences. Those who stood up for their rights of a fair trial are still in the Gulag. It also seems that there are issues getting competent representation, and an impartial jury in the liberal DC court system.
So what you are saying is that if Trump or that lunatic Disantis win the next presidential election you will fully understand if their opponents attack the capitol building and attempt to take over the government? That is their right?

This was a petition to talk about a serious community problem. It was decided not to talk about it. But when it comes to the health and well-being of homeless families we should, at least, talk about it. How in the world do you ever deny Councilor Kronick’s petition to talk about this issue?
