A ganged-up electric box within a cough from City Hall.

Weeds and trash: Pittsfield bumper crops. These are on Renne Avenue.

Sanity, ca. 1939: A beautiful downtown Pittsfield when it was one of America’s great small cities.

Recently, THE PLANET had business in downtown Pittsfield. It’s a place we religiously avoid unless a compelling reason brings us there.

Our destination? City Hall area.

After we concluded, we took a little stroll on nearby streets, including Renne Avenue, Eagle Street, North Street, and Columbus Avenue.

———- ooo ———-

We hadn’t planned on taking any pictures, but the fright induced by blight forced THE PLANET‘s Hassleblad out of hibernation to snap off a few moonshots. Time being our most precious commodity, we spent mere minutes on framing, including only what came into view without specifically looking for anything in particular.

After looking at these photos, THE PLANET invites you to conduct a thought experiment.

Pretend you are in business. You have a small start-up having to do with an application that would be of use to fans attending any big-time sport. It’s already been wildly popular on a smaller scale, and you need to expand. You also have a small and growing sister company that produces soundtracks for digital applications.

You expect that by the end of your first year, your 10 employees will grow to 25. Salaries: Starting pay at $65,000 a year. After the first year, average salary for staff will work out to about $78,000 plus bennies.

Because the nature of the work means you can locate anywhere, you wish to move your small but growing business from its expensive New York location to something less costly and more conducive to a bucolic quality of life. Someone mentions The Berkshires.

Your due diligence ultimately brings you to city hall, where you get the usual “vibrant and dynamic” blah blah blah. You then have your scouts quietly investigate the area, particularly the downtown (where you need a space for about 25 techies) and the schools.

The red flags begin popping like the buds on late April’s trees and the Buds at the neighborhood watering hole.

———- ooo ———-

Your team brings back a report on the actualities of Pittsfield Level 5 public school system. Then they show you reams of evidence depicting a collapsed and dying downtown: graffiti, trash, detritus, drugs and drug trafficking, littered drug paraphernalia, panhandlers, “a lot of scary looking people,” unkempt streets, empty storefronts, and other signs of urban decay.

The report also warns of layer upon layer of red tape and inconvenience to be expected if you actually try to do business with and in the city.

What would your decision be? Would you move to Pittsfield, or would you move elsewhere?

Simple question with a simple answer.

As always, THE PLANET looks forward to your thoughts.

Economic Growth in Pittsfield: The Underclass, welfare and disability caseloads, social services and not-for-profit agencies, State Lottery ticket sales/SCAMS, marijuana dispensaries and cultivation facilities, nip bottles, cigs, corrupt career politicians, con artists, and so on.

Political Realities in Pittsfield: The late-“Mayor Barstool”, “Aberration”, “How about that Rolodex?”, “Mayor Montello”, “Gated Community”, “Candidate Banker versus Candidate Unemployed”, “Level 5 School Committee”, “The City Clown-cil”, “State Rep. Country Buffet Happy Endings”, “State Senator Marx”, “PAC Man Richie Neal”, “Maryland Markey”, “NOT on Main Street Elizabeth Warren”, and “Prez Joe Xiden”. => NO real representation for the fictional Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski family!

Financial SCAMS in Pittsfield: The $200 million “Pickleball” municipal budget in return for Pittsfield always being in the top 10 cities by population in Massachusetts for Violent Crime, Level 5 public schools, the almost 25-year-old polluted PEDA debacle with millions of dollars in always increasing unfunded debts, hundreds of millions of dollars in municipal debts and unfunded OPEB liabilities, huge tax breaks for failed businesses over the years, and the use of retribution against anyone who exercises FREE SPEECH in Pittsfield politics, especially if one is named Melissa Mazzeo.

Arts and Culture in Pittsfield: Art exhibits in upscale art galleries and museums in London, NYC and L.A. with large photographs of Pittsfield, Massachusetts that is billed as: “Pittsfield: A City in Decay”. 15 empty storefronts on North Street, which is sarcastically called “Social Services Alley” by day and the over 1,000 gang members’ “Shooting Gallery” after hours with the distressed neighborhoods that surround North Street called “The Ring of Poverty”.

To answer blogger Dan Valenti’s question: “Would you move to Pittsfield or somewhere else?”

Jon Melle’s answer: Postindustrial Pittsfield has lost thousands of living wage jobs and thousands more people due to population loss over the past 50 years. There is nobody to turn to for help unless you are a member of the Good Old Boys network of inbred political families who only want it all for themselves in Pittsfield, while everyone else has to pound sand.

If someone such as “Jon Melle” turned to Pittsfield politics for help, I would lose all of my self-respect and have to kiss the corrupt political insiders’ dirty behinds, and they would probably end up mocking me for trying to earn a living wage in Pittsfield because I would have better odds with spending my limited income on the state lottery SCAM that targets Have Nots such as myself.

If I stayed in Pittsfield, I would end up living the rest of my life in a distressed state of mind among the powerful people who have hurt me and my political family without any remorse for many years now. It would be like living in a recurring nightmare without an exit.

There is a bigger world out there than my native hometown of Pittsfield, but many Pittsfield residents are stuck living their lives in Pittsfield due to low-income and family circumstances. The answer, blogger Dan Valenti and readers, is that a rational middle-class family and/or small business would NOT move to Pittsfield because there is nobody to turn to in Pittsfield who will help them succeed in living a middle-class life.

I hope you realize JM your Socialistic voting and support is what caused this decline of the Pits! I just hope as you wrote this you realized your votes helped destroy a great city. Now that you are in the Granite State run by Republicans and doing great as you say, I hope you are changing your votes to Republican, You are seeing first hand how much better it is to live in a state that respects the Kapanski’s instead of the, for lack of a better word, Weirdo’s. If you and your ilk are still pushing the socialist/communist agenda please leave New Hampshire!

I respect you and always enjoy reading your posts, “ShirleyKnutz”. But I feel that what you wrote to/about me, Jon Melle, was a cheap shot because a lot of people know full well what happened to my political family in Pittsfield politics to the Boston Statehouse due to the disgraced double dipper (Boston’s Financial District) State Senator turned Pot King’s 27 years of persecution. I am still trying to deal with my negative feelings towards politicians, especially in Pittsfield, Amherst (MA) where I attended UMass many years ago, and Boston’s Statehouse, but I also have negative feelings about the Swamp. I dislike career politicians because they are only about the Almighty Dollar and Power, and I feel like common people, such as Have Nots like Jon Melle, and distressed cities like my native hometown of Pittsfield (MA), receive only DISSERVICES from the financial, corporate and ruling elites. Whatever happened to the government Investing in People? Moreover, I feel like the state lottery SCAM and other (voluntary) regressive taxation schemes mock both Jon Melle and Pittsfield alike because it allows the elites to profit off public inequities. To illustrate, there are registered lobbyists on Beacon Hill who make 7-figure salaries. In the Swamp, K Street is bragging about the lobbyist firms record earnings. Meanwhile, the common people and distressed cities – the Jon Melle’s/Pittsfield’s of the world – are paying well over $100 per week for the same goods and services than two to three years ago. Jon Melle never stood a chance in Pittsfield, and Pittsfield politics’ Good Old Boys made life difficult for me. Jon Melle lives in New Hampshire, which is an openly financially conservative state, and I don’t have to deal with Pittsfield politics anymore other than read about its downward spiral on Dan Valenti’s blog.

Not a poke JM just a light on your choices. The Democrat Party owns Pittsfield and MA. These are the people you state hurt you and your family. So I ask why would you want similar people in office? You can not keep doing the same thing over and over again thinking that things will change. Hence the reason you and your family should keep NH free from the Bay State crooked politics from jumping the border.

And if your business has multiple vehicles running around town you will have the constant expense of front end damage from poorly maintained roads. Your employees will have that same expense. My guess is that any CEO visiting and looking for a place to relocate or start up a business will make his decision after a short drive around the city. Potholes, some of them huge. Poorly lined roads and crosswalks. Aging fading street signs. This tells one all he or she needs to know about how the city is managed and what you can expect going forward. Tyer has been in charge for many years now and the roads are worse than the day she took office. How does that happen when the taxes went up so much every year?

And what was the name of that high end auto dealer that just moved out of Pittsfield to Lenox? They were in Pittsfield for a very long time but apparently something changed their mind about staying. Wonder what it was. Were they offered tax breaks like some other car dealerships? And by the way, is Haddad still getting tax breaks like other millionaire business s in Pittsfield?

There is no labor force in Pittsfield any more. Not one that could pass a drug test or would show up to work everyday. The only business that would locate to Pittsfield anymore would involve taxpayer funded social services bs.

The only people with a really strong work ethic are over age 55 it seems. Many companies are considering hiring older workers because of that strong work ethic. Older workers will even do overtime. “Why didn’t I think of this before?” said one employer after he hired only over age 55 workers? First of all, these were the only workers he could find who wanted to work, but it’s a sad commentary on our society that most people want to live off of big government for the rest of their lives starting in their 20’s.

If the people making a crapburger are getting $15/hour, that crapburger is going to cost the business enough to require it cosing $7.00.

I don’t eat crapburgers anymore because I can get better food for same price in any other restaurant, and I cannot afford to eat them on impulse. If I’m typical, then fewer crapburgers are being eaten. Used to be, the working poor could take their children to McD’s for a fun meal once a week and not break the bank. Not anymore. Nowadays, I believe you need to be rather affluent to afford that luxury.

If one doesn’t like the wage offered, one is free to start his own business. Also, ‘living wage’ is now the law of the land in the Commonwealth. They almost pay $20/hour to watch a gas pump. Not everyone can get to work for a state employer who magically can pay as much as it makes him feel good for paying it.

What’s a respectable wage? What does one have to do to expect one?

I mean, if you want to become a commercial airline pilot, you have to gain experience and training that is costly in money and time, eg. serve in the airforce, spend money on personal training, schooling. Then, if after this speculative investment, you actually get the job, you have to make extreme compromises in your personal life: no alcohol, long time from family, and a dangerous and stressful job. For such an undertaking, I would think that there are few interested in it and the compensation would be necessarily and desirably high for both pilot and passengers. You do not want the floodgates opened to anyone who wants to be a pilot.

Or, you can take a common job, identical in expectations and prerequites across the industry: retail, customer service, and those with on job training. Those employers have high expenses and narrow profit margins. They have to spend large amounts of money on overhead: employee comp. insurance, unemployment, taxes, payroll taxes (employer share social security), HR personnel, accounting/purchasing personnel, marketers none of whom are providing revenues. For those jobs, you do want to open the floodgates and you do want the compensation to be low. Why? Because if the pay must be very high, the job slots will be very few and that leaves scant options for those who do not want to be entrepreneurs.

What an easy softball question for this dreary April morning. I think everyone on this board will get an A+. The answer of course is a resounding NO!! I would not start a business here or relocate a business. The only thing a business leader may possibly do is come here for the easy handouts for a year and then move to the location that they really wanted all along, with the extra cash from the Pitts! Tyer has been a complete failure as a leader and unfortunately I do not see any candidate with the skills necessary to turn this city around. I am still kicking myself for not understanding the message behind the sinking ship that was in Allendale all those years ago!

As long as the roads are shit the city will be regarded as under poor management. First thing you see as you arrive. If your limo is bouncing up and down from the airport on your way to meet the mayor you may have changed your mind before you see her. It is kind of a tell as to how things are prioritized, assuming there is a plan at all. If the roads are bad it suggests that things at the top are not well and that there is a lack of oversight to follow up. Strikes one, two and three.

Some assistance?? Big multi-million grants from the state, local TIFS & handouts from the city for 8 jobs. They are basically on public welfare. Wayfair? More state & local welfare and now they’re just a memory.

I went to Carr Hardware in Pittsfield earlier in the week and witnessed drug addicts sprawled out on the sidewalk in front of the neighboring drug store. Vagrants are continuing to smoke & hangout all along North St. Amazed that Steven Valenti’s store is still hanging in.

Where is the Mayor? Already retired? Does she ever walk North St. & consider how it could be improved?

The family YMCA now hosts activities just for immigrants. I believe our tax dollars went towards remodeling their building. The city wants to erect a brand new building for the drug-addicted, the mentally ill and illegal aliens. That’s the mindset of the city’s leaders!

I also went to Carr Hardware for a new bird feeder. But before I even got out of my vehicle a filthy skanky dopehead that had been loitering outside the drug store approached my vehicle and asked for money. I declined to give him money, but he was very persistent. Actually, he was so persistent that he made me feel threatened. Because of this incident I’m not going to Carr Hardware on North Street ever again. I’ll drive to the Lenox store, or I’ll go to Home Depot. So, now there isn’t even one reason for me to go to North Street ever again. I don’t know why the Walgreen’s or Carr Hardware can’t do something about these aggressive bums loitering in the parking lots of their businesses and accosting customers.

And I don’t want to hear that crackheads/dopeheads aren’t violent. I know of a junkie crackwhore who violently snatched the purse of a woman in her 60’s in a parking lot. And when a 17-year-old girl who witnessed the violent purse snatching came to the aid of the purse snatched victim, the crackwhore stabbed the girl. This junkie/crackwhore is a violent offender who has gotten away with lot of criminal behavior. And I mean, A LOT OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. Which includes, but is not limited to, A&B, physical violence, theft, vandalism/destruction of private property, B&E in the night, threats to falsely accuse someone of rape if they didn’t give her money for crack, outrages crimes perpetrated against multiple people over the age of 60, and people younger than 60. And she’s out there. I’ve been told that she’s a snitch and that’s why she gets away with all of her violent destructive crimes. And there’s no reason for me not to believe that, and a whole lot of police reports to prove it.

Can using CI’s be entrapment?

In many criminal investigations, undercover police officers and informants are used to gather evidence to build a case. However, when an informant or undercover cop entices a person to commit a crime, the actions of law enforcement may amount to entrapment.

Synopsis of the settlement is that FOX settled because what would have come out in court would have exposed them as the true fake news, Putin ally, that they are. By settling, all that filthy laundry about election fraud that caused the attempted overthrow of democracy stays bottled up.

Now, most of their faithful followers will be able to remain lost in the wilderness and still watch and believe them.

Thems the facts Dan. No need for you to cover it now.

Hannity is just a skilled teleprompt reader (skilled because you can’t see his eyes move). Tucker Carlson, on the other hand, is a supremely gifted on-air talent. Those of you who watch Carlson will recognize that his most common – and most successful – technique is the ‘thinly-veiled, just ask questions’ mode. Carlson’s writers script, and he delivers with doe-eyed sincerity, statements that are not exactly lies but rather are questions that have overly simple answers. Tucker would not do well in what we all would consider a normal give-and-take debate.

Now did the negro kid, “knock on the wrong door”, or enter the wrong house?

Will LE/MSM tell us the truth?

If the kid got shot for knocking on the door….Or, he was doing a BE………?

Do you believe MSM?

After all, the “Jab” is “safe and effective”, “masks prevent disease transmission”, all the money to Ukraine is accounted for, the laptop from hell was “Russian disinformation”, …

Even if the water whiz could win in Ward 6, that doesn’t mean he should win. I really don’t want to listen to how he saved the taxpayers billions of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ when he invented the Gaetani Maracle Flotation- Filtration System that saved the world every other week for the next two years. There has to be something that isn’t the water whiz or the climate Dyke Dina Squeal. And I’m absolutely not voting for Patrick Kavey. Not even if he gets rid of that ridiculous thing on his head. I’ll vote for Ocean Sutton, but only because she’s not Patrick Kavey, with that ridiculous thing on his head.

I will vote for any non-puppet. If Gaetani loses in the primary there is no reason for me to waste my gas getting to the polls.

Krol or Marchetti equal same shit different day. Does not matter. That is the undeniable reality.

All of your favorite far left stations lied for years about Trump and Russia collusion. I would say that was making a fool out of anyone who watched MSNBC, CNN, Rachel Maddow, Good Morning Joe, ABC, CBS, NBC….all lied for years, but I’m sure you still watch them.

The next Berkshire1 entrepreneurs meet will be held at one of the way too many pot shops. High employees are absent more, have more accidents, binge drink more and have more mental health problems. So that’s a hard no.

Dina Tucker-Xian-Lopez-Lipschitz-Guiel (D-climate czar), explains that “climate crisis” is the reason Pittsfield allows the city’s infrastructure to look as horrible as it does.

Gas powered lawn tools, a sandblaster or three, and the chemicals released by paint when covering up the graffiti, cause extreme harm to our environment.

The 1939 picture shown above shows a decent amount of automobile and foot traffic. There are straight white people laughing and enjoying themselves. Plus, the electricity used by these businesses on North Street, caused irreparable harm to the ozone. Business is not good for the environment, unless it has the stamp of approval from the Ayatollah John Kerry himself.

In addition to “climate change,” this picture is also used as the example of “white privilege” by social justice warriors and cultural competency coaches.

People need to speak out about the insanity of the far left. If people don’t speak out now, what will happen when the far left completely bans free speech? They are attacking FOX news, they want to ban AM radio in vehicles which has conservative talk shows, and the globalists control the media in this country. If enough people speak out against it, we could stop this far left globalist agenda of turning American into a fascist country.

The rights reply to disagreement is to immediately change the subject. If they cannot defend their actions they spin around and point to something else and go, “wow, look at that!”

I believe that Pittsfield wants poverty & Level 5 public schools because the city is rewarded with millions of dollars in state administered federal aid for all of the social services. It is similar to the state lottery SCAM, which targets low to moderate income idiots who live in Gateway Cities like Pittsfield. I call all of it Perverse Incentives! The Rolodex was never real, but the Gated Community…

Cocaine Bear (released as Crazy Bear in some countries) is a 2023 American horror comedy film directed by Elizabeth Banks and written by Jimmy Warden. It is loosely inspired by the true story of the “Cocaine Bear”, an American black bear that ingested nearly 75 lb (34 kg) of lost cocaine.

In addition to the Pittsfield problems stated in this discussion a business owner would have to consider the state’s problems of high taxes and high energy costs. I don’t see any relief in site regarding those issues.

Mortuary folk are doing just fine as well. and Narcan is flying off the shelves. If you can ship materials for a new ballpark you might make a few bucks as well. Who is the lucky material supplier for the Springside house makeover? Going do well there.

And when they get done turning Pontoosuc lake into Lake George, the big bucks will be rolling in for somebody right? Question is, “will people from Pittsfield ever be allowed near the lake again?”
