UNITED WAY’s “DIE” POLICY SHOULD GIVE ONE PAUSE BEFORE LETTING GO OF HARD-EARNED DOLLAR$

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MAY 22, 2023) — Recently, the Berkshire chapter of United Way honored community volunteers, without whom, of course, it could not carry out its mission, which, in its own words, “ignites the collective power of individuals and organizations to build a stronger community together.”

Sounds good and is good.

The “however” in this is concern over the “new” United Way mission. As listed on its website:

Everyone Matters in Berkshire County

Approved by the Board of Directors | November 19, 2021

Berkshire United Way believes that to improve people’s lives and our community, we must strive to ensure that the staff, board of directors, volunteers, and partner organizations reflect and include the communities we serve. Berkshire United Way commits itself to enriching community experiences through the advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive practices.

To value diversity is to respect and appreciate all race, religion, skin color, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical abilities, age, parental status, work and behavioral styles, and to respect the varied perspectives of each individual, as shaped by their origin and experience.

To be inclusive is to leverage diversity by bringing together unique individual backgrounds to address the issues facing our communities collectively and more effectively.

We maintain that building and sustaining equity in our county requires an ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging that is fully expressed in our organizations, cultures, values, norms, and behaviors and those of our partners. Our mission compels us to prioritize historically marginalized and systemically excluded people. It is necessary to focus on race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status as well as intersectional identities to end historical, social, and systemic inequities that persist in our county. We must inclusively lead, collaborate, and mobilize resources to address community needs and priorities.

Berkshire United Way will enforce its non-discrimination policy and equity minded hiring practices while promoting diversity, equity, inclusiveness, and belonging in Board and volunteer recruitment efforts and in the consideration of partnerships with community organizations.

We believe inequitable systems prevent families from living their fullest potential lives and we believe in intentionally making decisions that provide fair treatment, access, and opportunity for all. Ultimately, we strive to look beyond diversity, equity, and inclusion, and hope all people feel they belong within Berkshire County and our community.

And this, from a recent wire story:

United Way’s website (https://equity.unitedway.org/equity-toolkit/part-one/build-shared-language). The page I linked here is full of the usual jargon, such as the idea of racism being a “system of oppression created to justify a social, political and economic hierarchy initially constructed with White people at the top …”

Check out the link. It’s a doozy.

———- ooo ———-

UW gets its money from workplace campaigns, corporate gifts, sponsorships, grants, and individual donations. The workplace campaigns too often become political shakedowns, mandatory if you want to remain in good graces.

THE PLANET knows a case close to home where a worker was harassed then demoted for choosing not to participate in the company’s United Way grab. From then on we reserved “community chest” for Monopoly.

The woke United Way boils down to one question: Do you want you money to go to an organization that has formally adopted the racist, exclusionary practices of DIE?

Local UW president Candace Winkler receives compensation of $110,554. Finance director Valerie Schueckler hauls $92,435. THE PLANET realizes this is chump change compared to what a grifter can make working for municipal government, but it’s not a bad gig for a “job” that involves no lifting heavier than schmoozing with The Suits.

Roll call of local UW officers:

Christina Wynn | Chair Berkshire Community College

Michael Stoddard | Vice Chair Greylock Federal Credit Union

Ursula Maloy | Treasurer General Dynamics Mission Systems

Fr. Samuel Smith | Clerk St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

DIRECTORS

Pat Callahan, volunteer; Jaime Campbell, Williams College; Jason Cuyler, Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office; Warren Dews Jr., Capital Region Independent Media; Laurie Gallagher, volunteer; Jennifer Glockner, City of Pittsfield; Barbara Guido, Adams Community Bank; Matthew Kirchner, PPD; Chuck Leach, Lee Bank; Rachel Mabee, PGA WORKS;  Veronica Martin, Berkshire Health Systems; Douglas McNally, volunteer; Chris Montferret, General Dynamics; Dr. Jason Ostrander, Sacred Heart University; David Reinhart, volunteer; Alycia Sacco Duquette, Guardian Life Insurance Company of America; and Chris Smith, Hillcrest Educational Centers.

———- ooo ———-

Considering how “diversity” now means “sameness, “inclusion” now means “ostracizing,”  and “equity” now means “injustice,” THE PLANET respectfully proposes United Way change its name to “Divided Way.”

Social Services Alley and the Ring of Poverty distressed neighborhoods that surround North Street, Pittsfield politics’ “DIE” zeitgeist, local banks and not-for-profit organizations pandering to the leftists, Tricia Farley-Bouvier testifying in Boston for the legalization of “Happy Endings” massage parlors, Luciforo’s corrupt Pot Kingdom on Dalton Avenue stinking up nearby residential neighborhoods, Mayor Linda Tyer living in a mansion in a Gated Community within a few feet from the Hancock border, Peter Marchetti holding public hearings on the Mayor’s proposed municipal budget of over $205.6 million in return for the same old “shit sandwich” full of substandard services, John Krol promising to bring miracles to inner-city Pittsfield, Craig Gaetani continuing his legacy of fringe politics in memory of the late-Peter Arlos. What is it all for in the City of Pittsfield, Massachusetts? The answer is for all of the phony political, community and business insiders to pull down 6-figure salaries, while the common people roll their eyes at them!

There are local groups like UNICO, Lions, Civitan and Kiwinas to name a few that take donations and help people. They are staffed with unpaid volunteers. Give money to them if you are inclined to give. UW spends more on administration than helping people.

I agree. Ones charitable contributions can certainly be better directed and has more chance to help the people you intended. I know several people who work for BMC and would rather not contribute to UW but are afraid not to. And that is not right.

The low intellect crowd considers the UW an actual charity.

In 1992, William Aramony, CEO of the national organization for over 20 years, retired amid allegations of fraud and financial mismanagement, of which he was subsequently convicted. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined $300,000.[87][88]
In 2004, Oral Suer, the CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area in Washington, D.C., was convicted of misuse of donations. He pleaded guilty to theft of almost $500,000 and was sentenced to 27 months in prison.[89][90][91] Norman O. Taylor, Suer’s replacement, was never charged with misconduct but was forced to resign.[89]
In 2006, Ralph Dickerson Jr., the former CEO of United Way of New York City, was found to have used $227,000 in United Way funds for personal expenses during 2002 and 2003. He later agreed to reimburse the organization.[89]
After the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the United Way of Western Connecticut was criticized by some victims’ family members for a lack of transparency in fundraising. According to those critical of the agency, the money was raised in a way that implied it would be used for the families, but then much of it re-purposed for broader community needs. As the organization focuses on community long term work, the United Way stated that majority was intended to go to non-exclusive, community support programs like counseling, after school or job-support programs; however, this angered those who felt the money should go directly to the families of those affected.[92]
In 2021, United Way Worldwide CEO Brian Gallagher resigned over claims of mishandled complaints of sexual harassment and discrimination at the United Way Worldwide office.[93][94] Three female employees had filed complaints with the EEOC alleging they experienced sexual harassment and that they were retaliated against by United Way Worldwide after speaking out about the harassment.[95][96]

Why is it a great post? What is his argument?

He frames his point with saying that if you disagree with him that UW is a [presumably] effective charity, you are low-intellect. Why?

Yes, this is the dribbled leaking of a councilor whom I know. Notice that he references names that have no local ties. For example, he does not mention Hazzard’s involvement in the death of Mr. Calamari. Safe distance for a politician looking for street-cred. that are badly bruised.

Fair enough. But the assertion is false – is UW not ‘an actual charity?’ He means to say that it performs no charitable purpose.

Lot’s of large charitable orgs have corruption. Red Cross is scandal plagued, but on account of change in leadership (GWB?). Earlier, responding to political strategies that made IRC incompatible with US Red Cross values, the US RC had severed its relationship with the INternational RC. So, US RC was not always a scandal, and there is little reason to assume it will be in the future.

QT’s critique of UW is intended to paint himself anti-UW, but he carefully avoids alienating regional leaders. He is criticizing, in fact, neither the organization which is too big to care, or the local leaders. That was a post he would have been safe to put his name on.

And what is with this annual begathon with the 4th of July parade? Why don’t they use their dubious CPA money for that? The mayor has an over 200 million dollar budget which is used for all kinds of goodies like flowers and events at the Common etc and countless other feel good stuff. Just take the goddamn parade money out of that and stop with the pathetic panhandling for the parade. My guess is that there is an administrative fee for the gathering and accounting of these funds and who knows who gets that?

Over the weekend I started to ponder the crisis of Faith that citizens have in their government and status quo (no not prid quo pro Joe). I was wondering what if the citizens demanded a shut down like the mills use to do? Could we tell the government we don’t want them for a year? I don’t see how things would be too much different. I see people breaking the laws every day without recourse, level 5 education(if even that high), a government that doesn’t listen to the citizens(I have yet to see one of my complaints rectified or even discussed). I think the $40 million in ARPA can keep the water and sewer running which is the main benefit most citizens receive from the government. The Kapanski’s could use the year of tax free living doing whatever they want, maybe exploring their roots on a family excursion.
As for the United Way my family stopped giving years ago when they changed their mission and were caught having mile high parties and spending on executive perks. It is plain extortion that is permitted because you can’t say no unless you can withstand the backlash. Someone in my family actually had someone donate in their name so the company could say 100% donated!

Who needs United Way? Contribute directly to the organization / charity of your choice – then you’re not helping to pay the exorbitant salaries of UW employees.
Rule 27 brought up a good point – how much of your UW donation is used for administrative costs? How much of your donation actually finds its way to its intended charity target? That’s a question I ask of any organization I donate to, whether it be Salvation Army, T2T, etc.
It IS a corporate shakedown. In a former job I received a visit from the HR VP because I was the only one in the dept. not contributing to UW. I explained to him that I didn’t support some of the organizations that UW contributes to, and preferred to donate to charities of my choosing like my church and pro-life orgs. After being verbally threatened by him, I found better employment elsewhere since I knew I’d be blackballed.
Ditch United Way and go direct!

I guess it’s easier to be a loud mouth than to read instructions. Employees are able to earmark United Way contributions to a specific organization, such as your church. I did it, and I know they got 100% because they sent me a receipt for taxes. But I suspect you knew this and the real reason you didn’t participate is you’re a cheap f*ck.

It is awful. My cousins friends daughters daughter in Indiana just had a baby girl about two months ago. Everything was wonderful except that she was told the hospital wanted to keep the baby for an extra day to monitor her respiratory function.

So when she went to pick up her baby two days later the smiling doctor handed her her baby but it had a huge penis instead of a tiny vagina. Apparently she was given a DNA test and was determined to be mostly male oriented so they just fixed the situation and gave her a discount on the procedure.

The problem is that when they previously had a big baby shower they were given all girls clothes and now they cannot return half the stuff. Needless to say they were bummed out at the hassle it had created having to get put on hold trying to get refunds for everything. Sometimes it is not even worth having a baby anymore.

Something sounds off about this story. I find it hard to believe that a hospital would risk a lawsuit by performing surgery without discussing with the parents first. It also seems unlikely that a hospital would discharge a newborn two days after a major surgery like that or that the parents weren’t at the hospital while this is going on.

I also do not think he knows what is going on at PHS where teachers are assigning false genders to 6 year olds. I saw this with my own eyes giving Xmas gifts to the children at Morningside. The teachers had this list of little boys and girls whom they gave opposing genders. My question: is this evidence of sexual abuse (children inappropriately thinking about their gender) that PHS is concealing? Is it done without parents’ consent?

To Charles concerning his petitions and elected officials. How about if the Council in specific wins an election but not by a plurality of the vote. In others words, if no people vote then those councilors elected when assembled make it a super majority vote on every voting issue.

This will help with the puppet type voting currently and for years dominating votes for the administration and gives a little bit of power back to the people.

If a certain amount of the registers voters say sixty percent vote then super majority doesn’t need to be enforced. Anything less super majority should be in acted. Charles?

The problem with Chronic’s petitions on the budget is this; by the time they work thru the process, even if approved (and they will fail), it would be past the deadline for the budget to be passed.

If SIR CHAZ were so smart, he would have submitted them months ago. He is doing nothing other than grandstanding.

He isn’t stupid, but isn’t smart either. I see the spectrum in him. He is on it somewhere, I’m not not sure where. Have you been diagnoised, SIR CHAZ?

First: Talk about fixing the CoLA’s. In fact, it could be done this month and budgets could reflect new code next month. Not necessary however, and not practical.
Second, reduce this budget to 2022. The Mayor approved the CoLA’s – the burden is hers on how to pay for them.
Third: now is the logical time to argue for Code reform since we see the impact of the raises.

You follow the Council Manual for arguments. Start with an insult, then follow with straw man arguments.

Excellent proposal, Dan. Get me a proposal and I’ll float it.

The Council has a $4,000 budget for professional training. We should use it (for professional training.)

Better move fast then. Or Council will have to rewrite its budget and get more cash.

That’s the point, you’re the c c not me. I will though. Why be a c c if you are voted down on everything 6-5. What does it tell you. It tells me without a plurality your elected for life just go along with the mayor. One other item is The forgiveness of millions of dollars with the t I f s. Giving a non – plurality that much power?

Citizens may submit petitions. They can also work with a councilor for councilor sponsorship.

Milltown is already invested and construction has begun, they are not going to stop now. The answer from this citizen is “no”. No No No No No. stop giving rich people and entities all the breaks, especially when they are going to invest anyway. this is gravy for them but could be the difference for a family whose child might need another para in class, o r one of a thousand different ways that this money grab could be used to help the people who actually pay their own way in this community. sorry I am super happy with all Milltown has done and will continue to support their Bosquet investment but please councilors, stand up and say no. Their latest investment will only benefit a very very small amount of people and they will not be you and I. If they don’t get the TIFF do you think they will stop their plan mid stream? please tell me they have not already been promised this. This money should only be granted if it is going to benefit the community as a whole and if it is actually needed to make the project happen. This amount isn’t going to make or break the deal. no way

Excellent Pat. Couldn’t express it any better,, These current puppet phonies need to exit and it seems there could be a switch this November .Isn’t it obvious to everyone that six to five votes happen on a regularity. That’s the Cabal Dans talking about. Dump these a-holes.

And I am going to go out on a limb and suggest this might not be their ONLY TIFF. How many is hard to gauge with the different business configurations. But Pete Marchetti would know if someone wants to ask him. Just kidding. Puppets can only talk when someone else makes their mouth move.

But supposedly these TIFFs

That’s not even in the same planet (pun intended), the same solar system, the same universe, the same galaxy.

You are so far off the mark in comparison you’re a speck of dust a trillion miles away.
You don’t even make the news media ranking, you are considered a blog, gossip, and sports. Not even considered real news.

I stopped donating to United Way here a few years ago. I was a “leadership” donor. Now I donate directly to organizations that have no DIE tendencies. The focus on DIE is nationwide and the organizations who support it need to die, including United Way.
