We share two items.
(1) IT’S SCANLON
The first tells you that when THE PLANET makes a prediction using definitive language, you can trust it. Not long ago, when Lumpy, Dumpster, Voltron, and Kufflinks put together a shaved deck in announcing an “audit” for Bitchfield, they said two firms submitted bids. One was Scanlon company. Scanlon’s adding machines have been “auditing” Bitchfield’s cooked books since Peter Arlos was knee high to P.J. Moore. The other company … well, it doesn’t matter. They NEVER figured into this.
If you recall, we said FOR CERTAIN, that it would be Scanlon.
Guess what? After much hand-wringing, anguish, and soul searching, the zombies did the masters’ bidding, and the selection committee chose …
Scanlon!
As Gomer Plye would say, “Surprise, surprise, surprise.”
THE PLANET gave you the names of the ad hoc committee assembled to select the winner. That told you everything you needed to know. From the start, Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski were dragged to the table in a rigged game.
(2) HIGHLAND, WE HARDLY KNEW YE
Short and sweet: After 90 years in business, The Highland Restaurant on Fenn Street will close for good before the end of this month. So many memories to be vanished and vanquished.
Nothing more to say about that for now. We’d much rather hear from our readership what we should make of this news. Tell us what you think.

Local taxpayers in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, are feeling their wallets drained primarily due to a $243.2 million fiscal year 2027 city budget that heavily relies on increasing property valuations, skyrocketing municipal fixed costs, and structural funding imbalances.
While city officials attempt to mitigate the impact using “free cash” reserves, continuous operational spending increases have created an expensive environment and financial hardships for local residents, especially for Senior Citizens on fixed-incomes and others like them in similar situations.
Over the past 4 years (2022 – 2026), property values have increased by over 40-percent in Pittsfield, which caused a surge in assessments and property tax bills.
The Mayor and City Council are unable to control the rising fixed costs that always leads to record-breaking city spending.
Pittsfield’s structural problems is that it is “property-poor” on the commercial side. Pittsfield is also losing population numbers. Limited commercial growth leads to higher residential tax rates and fees.
Pittsfield’s discretionary spending is questionable given the severe financial constraints that the city and taxpayers alike are facing in fiscal year 2027.
Illustrations of Pittsfield’s discretionary spending that is questionable includes tax breaks and other so-called incentives given to millionaires (who donate BIG campaign dollars to the insider, career politicians’ coffers); the 2024 pot permits settlements that saw the politically-connected millionaire owner of Berkshire Roots Andrea Francesco Nuciforo Junior – who lives in a $1 million mansion in Pittsfield’s elitist Gated Community – receive a city check in the amount of $341,000; the 6-figure, taxpayer-funded hidden legal report on the PHS alleged scandals and the related 6-figure NDA’s, the dozens upon dozens of 6-figure public pay plus perks (for life) city salaries that will cost millions of taxpayer dollars over the following decades, the city’s generous travel and expense accounts, the excessive Police budget with its costly shotspotter services; and so on.
When I took financial management classes many years ago, I learned that the way to control fixed costs is to lower them by finding ways to limit fixed costs, and then turning fixed costs into variable costs if it is possible to do so, and then limiting the variable costs because it is easier to limit variable costs than fixed costs, and then finding ways to eliminate variable costs if it is possible to do so.
Another way to lower fixed costs is to consolidate city programs and services. Build the economy of scale by combining administrative functions, and then you find ways to limit or eliminate inefficiencies in the municipal government.
Another way to lower costs on city taxpayers is to mandate that the 2026 Berkshire state legislative delegation – State Senator Paul Mark, and State Representatives John Barrett III, Tricia Farley-Bouvier, and Leigh Davis – fully fund state aid to local government. Massachusetts ranks low in funding state aid to local government by being the 39th of the 50 states in state aid funding to local government. State Aid to local government in Massachusetts is at a close to 20-year low. It would be like if one received a salary that did NOT increase with inflation over close to 20 years while everything else costs a lot more money.
Another way to lower city costs is for Pittsfield to have real economic growth instead of having the 2nd highest Commercial Tax Rate in Massachusetts; Holyoke is 1st.
In conclusion, the problem in Pittsfield politics is that NONE of the ABOVE is happening. Instead, the city government is ALWAYS spending tens of millions of dollars per fiscal year MORE than its peer small cities such as Westfield and Fitchburg. There are NO reforms being discussed. It is always, spend, spend, spend…. Earl and the 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics pounds, pummels, pulverizes, punishes people’s purses.

If you thought that cult-town Pittsfield politics is set in The Twilight Zone, then it is a minor chapter compared to tonight’s debate whereby Seth Moulton tried to link Ed Markey to Jeffrey Epstein and one of his lobbyists after Epstein was a convicted sex offender.
Seth Moulton’s “October surprise” personal attack against Ed Markey lacked any specifics, evidence, and explanation.
It is only fitting that my Enemy #1 Luciforo endorsed Seth Moulton in 2026 because Luciforo has targeted me – Jon Melle – with over 30 years of conspiratorial and mean-spirited bullying that included unusual events and half-truths that have hurt me in my adult life; I am 51 years of age. Luciforo also targeted my dad, Bob (Berkshire County Commissioner from 1997 – mid-2000; my dad is now 82) with retribution many years ago.
When Alex Morse ran against PAC Man Richie Neal 6 years ago in 2020, the Massachusetts State Democratic Party Officials orchestrated a homophobic smear campaign against Alex Morse.

During the August 3, 2026, Massachusetts U.S. Senate Democratic primary debate, Congressman Seth Moulton attacked incumbent Senator Ed Markey by claiming that Markey’s name appears repeatedly in newly released files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Debate Confrontation
During the live broadcast hosted by Boston 25 News, Moulton weaponized the records, asking Markey: “Why would you even take a meeting with a lobbyist on behalf of Jeffrey Epstein? How could you do that long after he was convicted?”
Senator Markey immediately fired back, aggressively denying the accusation: He called Moulton’s strategy “absolutely reprehensible” and equated it to “character assassination”.
He stated explicitly: “I have never met Jeffrey Epstein. I don’t know Jeffrey Epstein.”
He accused Moulton of “playing to the Fox MAGA playbook” of distraction.
When debate moderators pressed Moulton to provide specific details or evidence to back up his claim, Moulton failed to provide any specifics.
Context of the Race
This intense clash highlighted a sharpening of personal attacks in the second primary debate between the two candidates. Moulton is currently challenging the 80-year-old Markey ahead of the September 01 [2026] Democratic primary.

I’m going to miss the excellent chicken cutlet sandwiches from the Highland which was one of my favorites. I’ll never forget the first time I was there with my father back in 66.
Highland has served many delicious Italian meals to my family and their scallop sandwiches were the best. It was a tradition on football Sunday to get our veal cutlet spaghetti with lettuce side. Did it for years. I bought. Job well done Arace Family.
The prices for the amount you got of different delicious plates of food was a plus.
How many times have you had a chicken cutlet sandwich there o p. I haven’t been to the highland since the early seventies. I know Bullet Bob used to park his car right in front of he restaurant every day.. If I’m lying I’m dying.
Been there in person and ordered out to many times to remember since 1966 with family and friends. We had our last cutlet sandwiches in June for takeout this year. My children got the wife and I gift certificates for there all the time.
Wish one of the current restaurant owners like McNnchs, Mazzeos or Soldato’s would purchase the Highland including the recipes, keep it the same. I am sure it will be a money maker. Hate to see it close.

The question of the auditor remains as simple today as when I was there in ’23. The Commonwealth states that auditors should be cycled out after 2 years, max 5 (needs confirmation). It is more than a suggestion, it is a best practice. Amuso is therefore incorrect when she says this time its ok to continue contracting with Scanlon. It can never be acceptable for a deliberating body to violate a best practice, anymore than it is for a bookkeeper do do so on the job.
Engaging Scanlon for any auditing function, given their unimpeded 20 year run, violates professional best practices. That every member who voted for them and selected them know this best practice from our debating the firm’s renewal makes me doubt their ethical qualification to vote on the matter.
The practice of limiting auditing terms makes unnecessary consideration of: cost, ethical impairment of Scanlon, or any other argument that would otherwise be considered.
Kalinowski missed her opportunity and was fooled by the usual pressures and irrelevant arguments the admin gobs over all of their requests, and that blunder should chew on her. She preferably would have voted “no” on the entire slate and requested 5 more candidates. Cunningham saw the real argument and he got it right.
This is the best analysis of the audit committee’s actions that we’ve seen. Great insights, SIR CHAZ!
Appreciate the nod, DAN. While cost is always a consideration, the primary goal is integrity of the audit. Scanlon is unable to provide that. Qhen I asked how they sampled test data, the answer is that the Finance department choose their own samples. The auditor is supposed to review ledger entries and request documentation. Their process is inherently cheap.
I’m really surprised that apprently none of that sank in on Kalinowski after hotly contesting the violation of the State’s auditing guidelines. PLUS, she isolated Cunningham and the others who had the brains and the integrity to vote no.

The sad part of it all is that the career politicians from Boston who underfund state aid to local government by close to 20-year lows to Pittsfield who always spend tens of millions of dollars per fiscal year MORE than Pittsfield’s peer small cities such as Westfield and Fitchburg with Pittsfield having the 2nd highest Commercial Tax Rate in Massachusetts; Holyoke is 1st; are putting fixed-income Senior Citizens and others is similar situations at-risk of losing their biggest investment, which is their HOME.
Pittsfield’s pseudo-AUDIT, Boston’s 39th out of 50 states in state aid to local government ranking, and Pittsfield’s excessive spending and commercial tax rate, are all BAD NEWS.
The career politicians in Massachusetts (TAXachusetts) are all failing to protect the financial well-being of the common people who they serve (“DI$$ERVICES”) in state and local government.

Why are they still wasting taxpayers money on these projects. Building modular units would cut costs by at least 50% .
