EDITORIAL CARTOONISTS DRAW A CLEAN LINE ON AMERICA’S SELF-DESTRUCTION

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY JUNE 29, 2020) — When The Ol’ Perfessor taught at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, one of our top students was a talented young man named Joe Glisson. Joe followed his dream and became a professional cartoonist. His cartoons were a regular feature of the Syracuse New Times, and even today, they adorn the walls of the fabled Varsity restaurant on the SU campus.

THE PLANET has always loved this branch of the newspaper business, growing up as we did with Herblock, Bill Mauldin, Bill Gallo, Bob Coyne, and so many others. In Pittsfield not so long ago we had the work of Russ Potak in The Gazette. No more.

The art form, still practiced at the more resourceful newspapers, has died locally, but at the national level, the talent still speaks volumes. In today’s post, THE PLANET presents a sampling of editorial cartoons taken from across the country.

Enjoy.

Feel free to comment.

Sometimes pictures can say more than words. As America destroys itself, the pencilists will be there to document every move …

… until somewhere in the near future, when the revisionists, the snowflakes, and the “offended” decide their work is too inflammatory. Then the erasers will emerge.

Enjoy while you can.

Great cartoons. I am reading a great book called “The Breakdown of Higher Education” by John Ellis. It explains why so many young people have been led down the path of Marxism and are being used by these political activist professors and even the administrators in our American colleges. The book is now a best seller. In my college days we had political groups on college campuses, but most of us had a very healthy amount of suspicion of these groups and stayed away, refusing to be influenced, but colleges today are saturated with these Marxist professors with a political agenda to manipulate these idealistic young people.

Since it is on City property, if someone should get injured, say by falling, is the City liable? What if there is a vehicle accident while parking for the movie, will they stop the movie while the PPD investigates? Are there going to be restrooms available? Will there be Port-O-John’s or will they be utilizing the school bathrooms? If it is the latter, will there be City paid janitors on site and who is paying for the overtime for the janitors? Since every night and early morning the City is deluged with fireworks will this be stopped so you can hear the movie? Will there be a Pittsfield Police detail present and if so who is paying for this detail? Will the cost come out of the $25.00 charge or will it be eaten by the taxpayers? Why can’t they use the Common like they have in the past? Hope all this information has been thought through beforehand and not be like the unfortunate drowning at Silver Lake where the City of PITS all of a sudden post “NO SWIMMING” signage a day after the recovery of the drowning victim. Better off staying home and watching a free movie in the SAFE comfort of home.

Ellis argues that “half-measures and calls for reason cannot obtain the necessary results.” It will not do, for example, to appoint a handful of conservative professors in order to try and “balance the ideological scales”—this will not get at the heart of the problem and will be ultimately ineffective.
Ellis contends that higher education “can no longer be reformed from within,” and that strong legislative action is necessary to accomplish true change.” This is from a review of this book since I’m not done reading it.

Both Democrats and Republicans must develop the political will to argue that universities are committing ‘fraud and embezzlement’ by promising to educate young minds and instead subsidizing radical-left politics. Then they must enact reform.” Would Democrats back legislation to change a system that is beneficial to them?

Dan,

I would argue they are not incapable of critical thinking, rather just being shut down. When I was in college years ago there was plenty of healthy debate to be had. I actually enjoyed bringing a conservative perspective to a predominately liberal class and always felt safe doing it and being able to have an open dialogue. If I was in college in 2020, I would not be willing to have that dialogue in the classroom. You risk being called a racist, having your comments or conversation recorded and put on social media, along with potential professor retaliation for grading purposes.

As sad as it is, it just isn’t worth it.

Karl Marx, who never lived in a Communist country, saw the inequities during the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The underclass and working class poor families’ children did not go to school. Instead, the poor children started working on farms or in factories starting when they were toddlers. The poor children worked 16 hours a day everyday of the week. The poor children were given only one meal a day for protein, and beer for carbs. The children were malnourished and deformed. The poor children were often sexually exploited. Meanwhile, the rich families’ children went to private schools, never worked, and were appointed to positions in the Church, State, or Business. There was no middle class. There was no public education. In Karl Marx’s day, you were either born poor, or you were born rich. When people deride Marxism today, they do not understand the horrific realities that existed during Karl Marx’s time.

You’re partially right. America’s poor are better off to a point. In 1968, I was making $2.25/hour minimum wage. In the late 1940s, my father made $0.25/hour at GE in Pittsfield. I am told that my $2.25 1968 minimum wage would have to push $18/hour minimum wage for a 2020 equivalent.

Factually, we do have working poor even in the Berkshires. There are families – yes, father, mother, children – that do not rely on state aid, but instead work multiple minimum wage jobs in order to make ends meet. As one young father said to me, “Yep, I’m working three jobs at minimum wage just to pay the bills. I’m just living the American dream!”

Does the head of a company like say Walmart, deserve his $20.9 million dollar salary while the guy working the lawn & garden section hoisting 25 pound bags of $2.98 mulch into your car deserve $15 with his hours capped so that he doesn’t qualify for benefits?

Us privileged old white men have it in our pea brains that most poor people have no pride and just want to live off the government dole. We’re wrong. There are plenty of people out there, friends of our kids who work their fannies off to pay the bills and not be on public welfare. Poverty does does not recognize skin color.

When my wife an I drive through our hometowns, we are amazed that the pristine homes we remember as kids are in need of paint, a roof, porch rails, etc. I have to remind her that it comes down to $400 worth of paint or two or three weeks of groceries for a lot of these people.

America is a place of opportunity. We just have to make sure we’re being fair and paying a living wage to those who do want to work. If the wages from a single job per parent paid the bills instead of multiple jobs, you’d have parents at home with their children, spending time with them, helping to keep them off the streets. Does today’s America resemble the one we grew up in where that was the case for all of us?

If it was, we’d have nothing to bitch about would we?

I am not buying your arguement in full. There are plenty of jobs that are not minimum wage, and minimum wage was not meant to support a family. There are tons of jobs paying more, like cops, firemen, teachers, corrections officers, court officer, etc, as well as good private sector jobs in the trades. I can’t get a plumber to my house for less than $100 per hour, and I can’t find a carpenter for under 50, or a painter for under 35 per hour. That’s good money and half of them are not reporting income to governemnt. Paint is cheap. They all seem to have cell phones, decent clothes, and money for alcohol, tobacco, and scratch tickets. It is partly a question of priorities, and partly a matter of economics. It is much harder to make it on one income now yes, but you don’t have to breed like rabbits either, if you can’t afford to feed the kids you have. The culture is shot. Hip Hop, disrespect the police, abuse women, have it all now, etc. The economy pre Corona was fine, for anyone willing to work, get a trade or education if necessary, and yes, move if necessary, to get a better job. There are 168 hours per week. You can work 68 like I did for years, and still have 100 left.

Thank you for writing this. I often see smart, hardworking families with so much stress as they have two parents busting their butts and next to no safety net.

My experience, and I have traveled a lot, is that Americans are some of the hardest working people in the world. We should reward the people who are out there every day with better wages and health insurance and pensions.

I think after this Covid nightmare and what I have learnt about how hospitals work that I am totally for universal Medicaid. I pay WAY too much for my family insurance and my healthcare to me – what I get — is in practice is no better than anyone on a public plan. Except the hospital gets more money – what do I get? I would vote for Medicare for all as well because it helps small businesses. They get crushed trying to pay benefits for their staff – or the good ones anyway.

Jon, you’re fighting on the wrong side. God wins in the end.

And while Jon attempts to paint a sympathetic picture of Marx, let me remind the pro-Americans on this site of a few despicable quotes from Marx, co-author of the Communist Manifesto;

“My object in life is to dethrone God and destroy capitalism.”
“Keep people from their history, and they are easily controlled.”
“Communism begins where atheism begins.”
“The education of all children, from the moment that they can get along without a
mother’s care, shall be in state institutions.”

My favorite cartoon from Dan’s column is the idiot pulling down the statue of George Washington.

”Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” Proverbs 9:10

No economic theory works. That is the cold hard truth. Capitalism needs a social safety net. Communism leads to totalitarianism. Socialism takes away a person’s incentive to earn a living. My point about Karl Marx is that Capitalism exploited the masses on many harmful levels during his time. Today, we live with the excesses of Capitalism where the wealthy or top 1 percent receive most of the economic benefits, while the bottom 99 percent fight over the scraps. I only want people to have a fair shot in life.

The bourgeoisie will pay for my boils” Herr Marx

The only inequity Marx could attest to really was his squandering his wife’s estate He fritterred it away with pseudo-history and sophist arguments of Class, donating to causes she had no part of, and dragging her into poverty. The boils were the result not of bourgeoisie oppression but the lice chewing on his skin.

Contemporary critics (Gladstone, perhaps?) observed that his ‘theories’ would lend themselves to highly authoritarian governance. With the passage of time, we know the history.

Fear it John Melle, we are potentially entering the era of 1984. It’s the time when the clocks all stop and history both past and future come to an end.

The fake accusation that independent voters and democrats want to go communist is for non critical thinkers.
How is Trump doing with the information that he did not get informed about Vladimir Putin putting a bounty on killing Americans….Of course critical thinkers know its a fake denial that he did not know.Trump was busy tweeting about a white power statement at a senior living facility saying he did not know that white power was being shouted. Obviously critical thinkers know he knew full well as he has led the race war in his private life and now as president….Putin owns Trump and his 45,000,00 voter base.Critical thinkers would see that and stop supporting Russias Putin.

President Trump loves our military more so than any president in a long time. He has gone to great lengths to expand and protect our military. For the far left to spread lies that he would not try to prevent soldiers being killed is outrageous and more desperate attempts by the far left to win an election. No president in recent times has done more to help Americans of all races. Critical thinkers would wonder just what Joe Biden owes to China after the huge money deals that he and his son made with that country.

TSC, critical thinking is the process of questioning and acquiring data. I have yet to read a challenge or a question in any of your remarks. Question: where is the data that Putin placed bounties? Another question, why are remarkable accusations flying now? Could someone (Putin?) benefit from the uncritical public accepting rumors (anecdotes) as verified fact?

There are so many questions for you to apply your critical mind.Get busy.

Hannity is right. Cuomo completely mismanaged New York’s response to covid. He issued a policy requiring covid -infected patients be admitted to nursing homes, then issued a directive that the nursing homes could not be sued for patients contracting the virus. Thousands have died due to his irresponsible policies. He panicked and demanded more supplies than he needed, and the Feds responded by sending the Comfort ship which saw very few patients. The Feds also set up field hospitals that were largely unused but paid for by you & me.

The state of New York is allowing chaos & mayhem, private property is being destroyed, businesses looted – Cuomo is not defending the rights of his law-abiding citizens – he should be fired!

Really? So can we go over how Trump got his start in life? Did he get a little help as well? Does Donald ever play to the cameras to create any illusions? And which one presided over the most bankruptsies?

There was absolutely nothing wrong with what Trump tweeted out. It’s the racist and Marxist Black Lives Matter organization that politicans vocally support that crosses the line.

The Mayor of Seattle is totally supportive of protesters until they arrive at her home. Now the message is we need to worry about protecting families and children and this needs to stop. That is the point Mayor Durkan which is why our country needs the police. A 14 year old has been killed in CHOP and another young person is seriously injured.

She meant just the kids and families in her gated community. The gate is most likely back up and now built like a bank vault. Typical pol. mention the children to get what you want because they are afraid of owning a political decision on their own. The pol’s don’t want to face what everyone else has to face outside their world, They just claim they will for the cause and votes.

Shakespeare and Co are getting a drive in License through the Lenox select board charging sixty dollars a car. When and who did BTG here get the ok from? Back in the day we had several drive ins that emptied the city. And who is going to these two drive ins anyway. I thought drive ins were passé? Anyway, the one At Taconic is taxpayer owned and illegal in my opinion.

Dan. B H S employees in particular are working under great restraints. Don’t you think they deserve something more than a pat on the back. I think the federal government should give each employee 10000 bonus just for working with a mask everyday and risking health to serve stupid people getting sick because they don’t social distance.

That’s how Orwell predicts the ‘end of time.’ History vanishes, and is continuously revised and counterfeited. The goal is for you to submit to a constant present with no hope for a future.

The goal is to have people forget about liberty and individual consciousness. Notice the clever use of divide and conquer to produce a a ‘herd.’ The rise of the Post-modern literary criticism movement came hot on the heels of the authoritarian and nihilistic sentiment of Europe. The technique they used successfully is to dissolve language by continuously altering meanings and definitions. Words that once had significance, eg racism, oppression, violence, now live in topical contexes divorced from any solid definition, except for what is permitted by espousers of the current demagogues.

Again, that is the tool of the Marxists of which Orwell saw coming in the ’80’s. Given the rise of relativism throughout the ’80s, I believe his prediction was solid.A bit before my time though – you may have more insight.

Re: Beacon Hill still wants to hike taxes and fees

Pittsfield (Mass.) State Representative Tricia Farley Bouvier and more than 3 dozen of her legislative colleagues wrote a letter to the State Senate requesting they vote on the tax-and-fee bill raising new revenues for transportation. I believe her priorities are wrong. Raising taxes and fees on transportation during the 2020 economic recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic would hurt the working class who pays to commute to work every workday. I fail to see how raising $612 million in taxes and fees on small businesses and their workers is progressive.

Beacon Hill should pass its fiscal year 2021 state budget that is due by this Wednesday, July 1, 2020. The Massachusetts State Legislature should take responsibility for the around 100 deaths at Holyoke Soldiers Home. They should also take responsibility for the RMV debacle that allowed a driver who was on drugs to kill seven Marine Corps Veterans in Randolph, New Hampshire. They should be asking Governor Charlie Baker why millions of dollars are unaccounted for in the state’s unemployment compensation account. They should suspend their five-month recess from August 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020, and instead pass bills that would help the over one million workers in Massachusetts who have filed unemployment claims this year.

I hope that Pittsfield State Senator Adam Hinds tells his counterpart in the State House, Tricia Farley Bouvier, to “stuff it” on her $612 million transportation tax-and-fee hike bill. People or taxpayers are hurting, and the last thing they need is for Beacon Hill to add economic pain to their distressed personal finances.

Bouvier and Tyer should be booted out yesterday. Bouvier is a known tax anything and spend progressive. She even stated at a work ceremony involving young adults that they should remember the help they received through mass work force, and pay taxes when they become adults.

Excellent piece Dan, Russ Potak was our local Thomas Nast. Use to enjoy his cartoons in the Gazette a must see and of course your columns also. Don’t know if it was a money issue or what, Russ said he threw all of them out. Think in addition to losing our collective minds, we also lost our sense of humor.

A child was sexually assaulted because the insane neighborhood refused to call the police. It’s a field day for criminals of all kinds because these people have lost their marbles. A CHOP resident said we need to figure out why people are committing crimes so we can get rid of the police. They honestly believe that we can quickly solve a problem that has existed since the beginning of mankind. That there is no such thing as a person without a conscience who will not hesitate to commit terrible crimes. God forbid that Biden is elected, this country is going to head down a very violent path.

While liberal media blames corona virus surge on red states opening up restrictions……..could it maybe be the riots and protests?

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/06/29/los-angeles-coronavirus-surge-black-lives-matter/

Los Angeles County may run out of hospital beds in the next two to three weeks because of a new surge in coronavirus infections dating to the period in which Black Lives Matter protests broke out.
Last week, L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said that it was “highly likely” that a new spike in cases was partly related to the protests and riots, in which tens of thousands of people filled crowded streets.
Earlier this month, there were also massive crowds in Los Angeles and other major cities for LGBTQ Pride rallies that doubled as Black Lives Matter (or “Black Trans Lives Matter”) protests. Attendance at L.A.’s parade in West Hollywood June 14 was estimated at 30,000.
